After finally getting married, Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) divorce after three years. He isn’t happy because she travels too much for work.

A scene from Barney and Robin’s wedding.

Not long after the divorce, Barney fathers a daughter after a one-night stand. His daughter changes him and his whole perspective on life.

Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) end up with three kids. Marshall turns down the opportunity to be a judge so Lily can go to Italy for work. But he is offered the chance again later and takes it, eventually running to be a State Supreme Court Justice.

Now, Ted and the ‘mother’…

Ted meets Tracy at Barney and Robin’s wedding. They have two kids together and get married a few years later.

But (as everyone expected) she falls ill and dies when the children are still quite young. Ted finally finishes telling his son and daughter the story he’s been telling them this entire season by saying:

“And that, kids, is how I met your mother.”

His kids are impressed though, and his daughter replies:

Ted and the mother of his children, Tracy (played by Christine Milotti).

“Is that it? I don’t buy it. You made us sit down and listen to the story about how you met mom? But mom is hardly in the story. No, this is a story about how you’re totally in love with Aunt Robin, and you’re thinking about asking her out and you want to know if we’re OK with it.”

SAY WHAAAA?

At his kids’ urging, Ted realises that YES, he IS in love with Robyn, so he grabs the blue french horn (only fans will understand) and races to her house to tell her how he feels.

And that is the end.

(Interesting side note: The scene where the kids tell Ted to go and tell Robin how he feels, was actually filmed waaaay back in 2006, so that the kids would still look the same age. So the writers have had this planned for a long time.)

So… Discuss.
