Because animals are cute. Like babies. It makes sense.
Anyone who has ever looked at Zooey Deschanel’s Instagram account (ie. me, two seconds ago) is probably aware that she is an animal lover.
There’s a picture of her with an owl, with some puppies, dressed as a rabbit — her name is ZOO-ey for god’s sake.
It’s seems fitting then, that her child would be named after one of her furry friends.
This week, the New Girl star announced she had named her three-month-old daughter Elsie. Elsie Otter.
“Like the animal,” the actress told a reporter on the red carpet, “Sea otter.”
Deschanel is hardly the first celebrity to give their baby a quirky name (see: Apple Martin through Blanket Jackson), nor is she even the first to name her baby after an animal
Jamie Oliver has a son named Buddy Bear Maurice, who has little choice but to pick up a banjo and join a folk collective.
Then there’s Sparrow Madden, Joel and Nicole’s six-year-old.
And obviously there is Seal, the celebrity who is himself named after a sea mammal and a reminder to new parents everywhere that adorable babies with animal names grow up to be regular adults with animals names and with the exception of Fox Mulder (who let’s face it was a little too obsessed with aliens), how many of THOSE do you know who’ve held onto middle management positions?
