my fiance proposed to me on our 7 year anniversary on top of a cliff at a restaurant by giving me a pop up book he made – but its not just any book. It contained puzzles and a combination lock! Very orignal!! check out the book on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhdQbn1lYMU

I recently got hitched, and I proposed with a video, which I posted at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_NFavhYjxk — ” took her to a karaoke club (where I had set things up in advance) and we sang in a private room for a little while. Then, while she went out to grab us a couple of drinks, I cued this video up and hit play when she came back. And the rest is history!

My fiance asked my father’s permission first. Then I came home and my dad winks at me and says “James asked me a special question, but I told him the answer was up to you”. Needless to say there were no surprises after that…

Beautiful way to end the day. My gorgeous husband proposed to me in the middle of a trip around europe. On the steps of St Catherine’s cathedral in Siena. “Yes, yes yes!” I said. Then we kissed. Then we laughed as the young Italian schoolboys on an excursion to the cathedral were yelling out, “ohh- kissy, kissy, lovey, lovey”. We asked one of them to take a photo of us- slightly crooked, slightly blurry- one of my all time favourite photos.

What a great way to end the day hearing of others Wedding proposals…and bringing back the memories of my own proposal…even though my proposal was over 5 years ago, it feels like almost yesterday we were on holidays in China, going out for a day trip to visit one of China’s tourist icons “The Great Wall of China” with the group we were travelling with…we were all nicely rugged up for the freezing cold Winter day and as we started to walk up the steps of the Great Wall, my now beautiful husband diverted us to another direction from the way all the tourists were heading and he then proceeded to go down on bended knee and ask the question. I was shocked and had no idea !!! It was one of the most special days of my life and we will share the memories and story with our baby girl when she grows up.

my 1st was 4 days after we first met. we had gone out for lunch and had talked about everything from marriage, kids etc. We both had said we only wanted to have kids with the person we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together and that we wanted to be married fist. Then we were at my parents house (where I was living at the time) I was getting ready for work and he said I want to have kids with you. I looked you from the ironing basket and said “so do you have something to ask me then” he said “yeah, wanna get married”

3 weeks later we found out we were pregnant with twins on the day he actually gave me my ring (at my 21st during the speachs).

Had the kids and got married 9 weeks later on what was 1 year from the day we meet.

So in date form: Meet (for the 1st time) 5.4.02
    Engaged 8.4.02
    Found out pregnant 9.5.02 AM
    Recieved ring 9.5.02 PM
    Moved in together 12.6.02
    Had twins 29.1.03
    Married 5.4.03
    had 3rd baby 13.3.04
    1st wedding anniversary 5.4.04

Unfortunalty less then 5 years of marriage later we seperated. Doesnt mean we rushed just means he cant keep it in his pants.

Must admit while we were married people used to love the story. And I did get my 3 beautiful children out of the relationship.

We were on our big europe backpacking trip and I thought he might but he seemed like he was never going to do it so I gave up and stopped obsessing about it, but then!! we went on a gondola ride through the main canal of venice and we posed at the front of the bow for a photo from our gondola man I went back to our seat first he came back but got down on one knee and proposed! our gondola man was singing it was perfect! little did I know he was going to propose when we got to the top of Mt Sinai in egypt but he felt there were too many people and then at the top of the eiffel tower I freaked cause I am afraid of heights, but in the end I couldnt have asked for a better proposal.

Can I just point out the oddity of calling this a WEDDING proposal. Actually, it’s a MARRIAGE proposal. It drives me nuts that there is so much ridiculous focus on weddings. It’s a big day, sure, but it’s not about the wedding. It’s about the many happy years that come after it. Rant over.

I’m a kinda go with the flow girl.

It was private and unexpected. I was 18, he was 29. We started going out early May after my 18th birthday. By his birthday at end June we were engaged. Very quietly after a late night cuddle session before he went home, he hugged me fiercely and said “You’ve GOT to marry me!” I said yes.

On 4 August that year he actually gave me the ring. On 4 August the following year we were married.

    26 years later, we’re still together. :D

I was rather young when I got engaged but I was keen to settle down then and the right person happened to come along. We were together for 6 months and he kept telling me “You know when you know” all the time. He was fairly maternal and settled, the job he is in is his job for life. I knew where we would be going in life and I used to tell him plenty of time, I am so young. I knew I wanted to marry him after 4 months of dating him. I didn’t think he would pop the question so soon though. I was telling my family that I would probably end up with him 2 days before he asked me.

We drove to town for a night out and he had pamphlets on the backseat, and I didn’t realise they were ring catalogues. And I said “You left the mail on the seat”. He grabbed it quick as lightning and stuffed it under the seat. I didn’t suspect anything at that stage.
We went out for dinner to the local dodgy chinese and he wanted to do it there so he said “I left something in the car, better go get it”. I waited for a while and he came back and by then some neighbours were sitting down to have a meal and he didn’t want to do it in front of them so he waited. It must have been driving him insane and me rambling on with god knows what the whole time. We started to walk across town to the pub and on the way he said “I got you a present in Dubbo the other day”. I saw a little wrapped box and thought in my head (it’s earrings, it’s gotta be earrings). I opened it and Oh My God it was a ring. He then said “I hope you like it, I want to know will you marry me?” I laughed and couldn’t speak and looked excited and he looked like he was about to freak out that I had not said yes yet. Time slowed down and in those seconds a billion thoughts through my head – this is the moment your life will change forever. This is it! my life is sorted with this man…. Forever and ever. I said yes and he nearly died with relief. Then he said “Dammit, forgot to get down on one knee” He got down for a third of a second as he was embarassed too. He did it in front of Ag N Vet in the town where we live – with IGA across the street. He didn’t pick the most romantic spot to propose, but he was just wanting to do it then and there. We walked on air to the pub and celebrated with friends there who were all ahocked and surprised and excited. We rang his mum and sisters – they screamed and partied as they were away. My parents (mum especially) were shocked and acted like it was a death in the family until they got over it eventually. His dad said “Make sure she’s long in the leg and sound in the mouth” Like he was buying a horse! joking and saying it was great. He picked the design of the ring and when we went to the jewellers I didn’t change the design, but we got a bit bigger sparkly rock and engraved it with the date. Taking me back 12 years ago now…. Love this post Mia!

    I love these stories!

My fiance proposed to me on a trip to Sydney. We’re based in Melbourne and I knew we were having a day trip together, but I was so surprised when instead of Daylesford (where I thought we were going) we turned off at the airport! He had hired a car in Sydney, and written out an itinerary with only times and addresses – no names of places – so it was a real surprise going to all the different places.

We went on a sea plane tour of the city and harbour, a fancy lunch near rose bay, opera house, zoo… it was a really fun day!

He proposed to me at the zoo, which was just perfect and romantic because we go to the zoo every v-day for a picnic! We’re getting married next Jan, I can’t wait!

    Great video!

My husband proposed down by our favourite beach. He secretly dressed our 2 month old son in a t-shirt he had made that said ‘Marry Dad’. When my son woke up from his nap, he uncovered him. I was so shocked. When I turned around he was down on one knee! I knew we’d get married one day but was so shocked when it actually happened. So sweet and lovely to involve our little boy too.

Mine was public :) My quartet were performing acappella Christmas songs to a 200-strong crowd at Darling Harbour year before last, when right at the end of our 2-hour set he climbed up onto the stage, asked the singer next to me to jump down to take photos, and then in front of the whole audience grabbed the mic, went down on one knee and asked me very formally, and extremely nervously, for my hand in marriage. I had no idea this was coming, forgot to even say yes I was that blown over. The crowd went WOOOOO, he prompted me for an actual answer, I said YES YES YES YES YES and it was all cheers and exhilaration from there. It just so happened his mum and my best friend were in the audience which made it even more special.

Mine was on an island in north QLD, my then partner of 5 years kept asking me to sit in the sand with him, to which I kept replying ‘No I didn’t want to get sand up my swimmers’ (charming…), he pretended something had bitten him on the inside of his shorts and got down on one knee to see what i was. While fishing around in the waistband of his swimmers, he pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him. I burst into tears and promptly sat in the sand shaking and crying, I was so surprised and wasn’t the least bit worried about sand in my pants then!

We had just found out I was pregnant with our first baby and I had all-day morning sickness and was unusually moody.
One cold and blustery afternoon my partner insisted we drive to a beautiful bay near our home. We were sitting on the jetty drinking hot chocolate and watching the boats and Mr AS was irritating me with some nervous odd behaviour. Did I mention I was moody? Anyway, I got a bit, um, stroppy and announced that it was waaay too cold, he was being a bit weird, my hot chocolate tasted funny and that I was going to sit in the car and eat a bag of much craved for salt and vinegar chips. I still clearly remember him standing on the jetty looking a bit bewildered while I stormed back to the car. On the way home we stopped the car so I could vomit several times. Ace.
A few hours later my mood had improved and he asked me over dinner at home. A beautiful ring and all. We still have a bit of a laugh about what a bitch I was that day.

When I tell our story to strangers, they think I’ve made it up.
I met my husband less than a year ago in Argentina (he was there travelling ans so was I), we fell in love and moved in together pretty much the same month. After living together for 3 months, he asked me to join him on a road and I said yes, so together we travelled all across Peru and Ecuador.
We have discussed possibility of marriage before and I knew that it was the first time he ever thought about commitment (he’s 33, I’m 28), but somehow I felt that it is not just another holiday/overseas affair.
It was in January (4,5 months together) this year when he proposed to me in Ecuador, couple of weeks before that date he took me to the shop to see what kind of rings I like so yes, I was kind of expecting it.
It was beautiful, although not super romantic, as I was cold and it was right next to the Statue of Virgin Mary in Quito during a windy night. He read a poem in French (his native language), then translated it to me into English, and presented me with a beautiful ring he chose in one of the stores in Ecuador (they do have some nice stores there!).
Anyway, cut the story short, we married this July and looking forward to celebrating one year anniversary of our first date this September

    What an adorable video!!!!

My boyfriend (now fiance!) thought he’d recruit the cat in his Proposal. He attached the ring to Dolly’s collar, intending to carry her to the room I was in, and see how long it took for me to notice the ring…

But Dolly had Other Ideas… She broke away from him and hid behind the book case, with the ring still on her collar!!

He finally got her out from her hidey-hole, carried her in to me, and got down on one knee to hand this suddenly hissing, spitting, scratching, growling beastie to me! She then broke away a second time, and hid under the bed.

It was half an hour before I finally got to try on my ring!! But could not think of a better way for him to propose! Both he and my cats are the dearest things in life to me!

    HOW sweet!!!

Mine was not as public but still massive suprise we went to Fiji for a holiday. A couple of weeks before we talked about getting married. Straight away he was like no not yet we are too young.

Then last day of our holiday he wrote in the sand, ‘will you marry me’ I was already crying because I dropped our brand new camera in the ocean. (Whoops) I couldn’t even take a photo of it.

But I will never forget it, we gushed telling everyone who wanted to listen!! So romantic!

My partner and I were at a friends wedding. During the ceremony he kept whispering ‘don’t get any ideas! I know what you women are like!’ etc etc. This despite me not being overly romantic or having considered marriage as part of my future and HIM being the softie.
During the speeches at the reception I watched my partner getting emotional about it all, nearly crying when the groom burst into tears mid-speech!
A couple hours later in the courtyard we were chatting with a friend about marriage, and he said something along the lines of ‘you wouldn’t get married, you’re not the romantic type’ which naturally my partner took as a challenge, got down on one knee and proposed! I’m pretty sure my answer was ‘are you SERIOUS?!’ but he insisted it was a genuine proposal and he was ‘going to do it one day anyway’ haha!
There were only a few people about, though it did upset one former friend who accused us of pulling this as a stunt to get everyones attention at the wedding. Ridiculous, given that it wasn’t planned, about 4 people noticed and the groom cried (again) when we told him.
So basically we are engaged on a dare… romantic huh ;)

Yay, I love proposal stories (possibly because mine is a bit lame!)

We were joking about the gifts that he had bought me for our 5th anniversary two days away and he mentioned he had a moment in the jewellry shop where he thought “Shit, I should probably be getting her an engagement ring”.

I laughed and said I was sort of glad it wasn’t, it’s kind of the standard cliche to get engaged on your anniversary and people were certainly expecting it of us, so I was glad we weren’t yet. BUT, while he mentions it, how did he think we’d manage the ring part? He’d just buy something, I’d pick something, we’d pick something together etc etc?

This then got kind of awkward and we changed the subject and were just generally talking about us and our time together and things and then he suddenly looked at me and smiled and asked me. I had to ask “really?” “really really?” about three times!

He had got me a ring for the anniversary so I wore that until we got mine made (google Jason Moss for awesome bespoke jewellery in Sydney!).

It wasn’t grand or even planned, but it was very us =D

Mine wasn’t quite so public, but I don’t like public displays for myself much so it was perfect for me! I was suspecting something but wasn’t 100% sure because I thought we were too young.
We had been together for 7 years at that point, so he had planned 7 things to do, so on our anniversary he picked me up and drove me to a day spa for a massage, facial, pedicure, the works, out for lunch, etc, and at each point he gave me a cardboard cutout red heart with things like Year One – then something that he loved about me on it but I wasn’t allowed to look at the back. When we got to our final destination, ‘our’ beach, he gave me the final heart and told me to turn them over in the sequence of years and it had ‘I love you will you marry me?’ on the back, then he pulled out some diamonds from his pocket in a tiny heart box. It was completely adorable and I still have the hearts in the drawer next to my bed :)

    Awww I love that!
Okay mine was a bit different to that. We had been together only a couple of months. We had just found out I was pregnant and we were driving back to his place and he proposed to me in his old Toyota Crown driving down Darling St. We were madly in love. He had tears streaming down his face. I said yes.
In the one day I found out I was pregnant, got engaged, bought a ring, gave up smoking, stopped drinking and announced our engagement to my parents. Talk about getting half of the milestones of your life out of the way quickly!
We made sure our wedding invitation captured the moment. We took a photo of me heavily preggers holding my man’s hand with my dad in the foreground dressed in overalls holding a shotgun, and my mum was in the background crying into her hands. It was a classic. Friends still have it stuck to their fridges 13 years later. I’ll see if I can find it and post it here.

    That was GORGEOUS!!!!

After dinner one night, my now-hubster suddenly goes ‘hey you wanna go somewhere? let’s pack a bag and go’. So I pack my bag, and blindly follow him, and somehow we end up on a flight to Melbourne

He’d hired a car and booked a place for us to stay, then even before I got out of bed the next morning he’d organised a picnic basket. He drove us to a beach, we sat on the rocks eating all my favourite foods, then he gave me Pride and Prejudice, my favourite book of all time, saying he found it at a second hand store. I open it up, and he’s cut out the pages into a hollow and inside, nestling on a wad of cotton, is a gorgeous platinum diamond ring.

It was absolutely perfect, a lot of effort for someone like him :) ))

Well, we were sailing across the English Chanel trying to get back from France to England before the winter hit so we could work and earn some money again. I had been throwing up for 16hrs straight because I needed to spend most of the trip below deck looking after our 5 month old. Tom (the baby) had finally fallen asleep and I was taking a turn steering the boat. As we watched the grey clouds and rolling sea he turned to me and asked … I said yes of course. 5 years and 2 more boys later all going well. I would not have changed anything.

After being EXTREMELY patient for a very, VERY (ie my ovaries are ticking loudly) time…
Me: ‘Well if things have not moved forward for us in the next six months or so, I may have to consider my options…’
He: Runs to bedroom. Retrieves ring from under bed. (Yep – I had been sleeping on top of my engagement ring for months with no idea) Proposes. In kitchen.
    Classic Mr Lottie.

This is after flying 2500km, and then driving for three hours to a place he had never been to before, to ask my parents for ‘my hand’, eight months earlier. EIGHT MONTHS PEOPLE! Nobody to this day knows that he did this, except for my parents and the two of us. This was at Mr Lottie’s request. HATES anything ‘showy’. Just like me.
He also shed tears thru most of our Wedding, passing it off as ‘hayfever’ – which he doesn’t actually get.
He still wishes he had done things differently. I think it is SO us :) (although I did add that if he would like to purchase more diamonds and try again, he is more than welcome too :) )

Yes he is. But not about everything.
Ironically, when we first met, it was HE that gave ME the ultimatum. After a couple (a few?) months of dating he told me he ‘needed more’ from me. I replied that I ‘needed more time.’ He immediately replied. ‘I give you six months’!
WOW! I thought. Someone who is not mucking around. That’s new :)
        He eventually got the gig.

No romantic proposal. We just knew we wanted to be together and that we wanted to have a family. So we just decided. The wedding was perfect and 8 years later (and 3 kids) I wouldn’t ask for another thing from my husband or our marriage. I guess it’s true when they say when you know, you just know.

I alway’s liked my parents’ wedding/proposal story (and since I lack my own it’s all I got):

I was one. My dad was back for a few weeks’ holiday over Christmas and, a few days before he left to go back, he looked at my mum and said, ‘Well, we have the sprog and everything. Do you think we should get married?’

The next day they drove to the nearest major town to organise a celebrant and my mum bought a wedding dress (which she still tells me cost more than $50) and then the following day they got married at my grandparents’ house.

Six months later, Dad bought Mum an engagement ring.

My guy proposed to me for love, but also b/c the visa I was one meant we either had to get married within 3 months or I had to leave!! So he took me to my first NBA game (the team at that time was crappy, but they won that night against one of the top teams) and then to dinner at this restaurant. As we finished dinner he asked me to get his wallet out of his coat pocket. When I reached inside, there was no wallet – just a small jewellery box. I opened it up, looked at him, and he asked me. Ironically that restaurant closed down soon after and then reopened in a new location under the same name . . . directly underneath his new office :) He’s moved to another office since then and he lost his ring on a golf course in Puerto Rico (so now I am married to iguana!), but I still ♥ him :)

we went on a little 5 day holiday to Vanuatu, and hubby surprised me by getting down on bended knee one evening out by the pool as we drank cocktails watching the sunset. I was not expecting it, and cried. he was unsure if the crying was a good or a bad thing lol. i said yes, and then when we came home he said we can’t tell anyone until we have told our parents…his were travelling around WA in a caravan, mine were in the USA.

It was a couple of days before i could wear my lovely ring.

and, timing! tomorrow the 18th will be 9 years since my hubby proposed :) he wanted to do it on the 22nd, because that’s the anniversary of when we started dating, but couldn’t because he was going to be away for work…that will be 12 yrs on Sunday :)

Sorry about that rude (of me that is) interruption!! Lana (poor Lana ) was giving me lessons on how to put my avatar on & I failed first time .. All good now tho.

My lovely man and I are proud of our almost 40 years because despite weathering quite a few challenges with his health ..and we still are now :( we are still so in love!
Both of us remember the exact moment we met, at a teachers conference dinner, and our eyes met, we laughed and danced and have been together from 1970.
We wed in “shotgun” style & that was a bit of an ordeal with parents ..but we KNEW it was LOVE that would last & that’s true!

We were in Brisbane on a weekend away attending a wedding. We walked through the Botanical Gardens, and I am completely in love with the Banyan Figs there (the massive trees you can go inside of). Anyway, we went into one to have a look, and suddenly he was down on one knee with an incredibly beautiful speech about how he loved me, wanted to spend his life with me etc etc. Then he started talking in Welsh (his dad is Welsh) and asked me to marry him in Welsh! Lucky I knew what was going on, although I was sobbing so hard I don’t remember a word of what he said!! He told me later that he had been communicating with a language school in Wales to learn how to say it all correctly – he had been studying for weeks!

The funniest thing is that he wanted to propose the night before when the park is all lit up and gorgeous, but I was SO hungover from the wedding that I begged to go back to the hotel! Spanner meet works….

It really was beautiful though, and my engagement ring was already engraved with the welsh words “Will you marry me”. He’s such a romantic.

Mine is tragic. I sat down with my now husband and asked him to list reasons why we shouldn’t get married after 10 years together and had a baby on the way. He couldn’t come up with any reasons not to, so we picked a date – for 6 weeks later.

I just asked my mother her proposal story… it appears she had the same discussion with my dad that I had with my husband.

    Romantic men in my life!!!

They were out shopping and mum looked in a window at a jewellers, and my dad goes “do u want one of those?” and she says “yes” and then they were engaged. lame!

That was fab! Made me smile….ah young love!

I actually proposed to my husband…we went away for a night and I had NO idea I was going to even do it but about 3/4 into the second bottle of french I just blurted it out, then focused and got down on one knee and asked properly. And…he said yes! It was a leap year after all…just didn’t realise there was a SPECIFIC date on which ladies could do it (details, details). The calls to our parents and friends were met with squeals of delight (and FREAKING OUT) as we had only been together for 4 months.

5 years and 2 kids later, it was THE best (drunken) decision I have EVER made!

We didn’t do the proposal thing or the engagement thing.

We just talked about it over a couple of nights and decided. There is so much to consider when thinking about marriage, that the idea of a proposal kind of freaks me out. I can’t imagine it being a surprise (for me, not anyone else). Over a couple of conversations we talked about marriage, what it meant to us, how we thought we would make it work, what kind of challenges we’d face, kids, money etc. At the end of the third night, we were like ‘that is it then. lets commit forever’.

    No romance involved!

Um OMG NOTHING about that was mushy I thought………. Except the part where his shirt said “I love you” and his mates ones said “He loves you”. A lot of effort though WOW however I would hate a public proposal. But thats just me.

My fiance just proposed 10 days ago and it was so romantic and perfect… Just the two of us away for the weeked, him on bended knee, ocean all around, secret picnic & champagne, seaplane, private beach and a poem he had wrote me! I’m so glad he didn’t do it in front of people I would have been so embarassed… after he popped the question he also told me he had asked my Dad for my hand in marriage which I thought was SO sweet, made me cry! We’d already been living together for a year too!
