Last night Husband and I went to see The Hobbit. Actually, I went to see The Hobbit and Husband took the opportunity to have so many micro-sleeps, it was more like a 2 hour nap in Middle-earth for him.
During the film I had a moral and conversational conflict (with myself) I want to share. Please note that my use of the word “dwarf” in this post is a reference to the dwarves of Middle-earth, one of the many races that inhabit it.
During The Hobbit, I found myself attracted to one of the film’s protagonists, Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarf leader who embarks on a quest (of course) to reclaim his lost kingdom.
As the film progressed, I became increasingly distracted from the plot and instead, attracted to Thorin’s piercing blue eyes, his dark flowing hair and his admirable skill with an axe. There was something about his voice and accent that was familiar too.
My first thought, as Thorin argued passionately with Lord Elrond and the wood elves of Mirkwood, was that I had the serious hots for him.
My second thought was, “Hmm, that’s not like me. I usually go for the Men of Middle-Earth (ie. Aragorn) and sometimes the Elves.”
My third thought was, “I am actually attracted to the dwarf. That’s interesting.”
My fourth thought was, “Why is that any more interesting or different from being attracted to a Man or an Elf? Oh my God, am I bigoted?”
I am sure that when Husband reads this post his response will not be, “Oh my God, is she bigoted?” but:
“Oh my God, does she fantasize about Aragorn and Elves instead of me?” or
“Oh my God, how is it possible that she could have so many inane thoughts during this movie and still follow the plot?” or
“Oh my God, how did she manage to stay awake and why oh why is it another trilogy?”
Eventually, as this moral conflict raged in one part of my brain, I realised that Thorin Oakenshield was played by the British actor Richard Armitage, who I loved in Spooks. He has this deep voice and Northern accent. As a result, I have this whole ‘Me and Richard Armitage Stuck in an Elevator’ Fantasy (doesn’t everybody?).
But for some reason I just couldn’t see me and Thorin Oakenshield stuck in an elevator. Maybe it was because they don’t have elevators in Middle-Earth (they have other amazing things though, such as gigantic talking eagles). Maybe it was more, I’m not sure.
And so, I am asking myself again – are my dating principles (fantasy dating or real dating) bigoted?
As a child I grew up in a conservative ethnic community (in Australia) that encouraged marriage within the community.
As a parent living in a wonderfully multicultural country, I hope that my children will date people who are kind and respectful. Full stop. I haven’t given much thought to the race or gender of those that might one day date our children. Partly because my children are still in primary school and so badly behaved I wouldn’t wish them on any man, woman, elf or dwarf. And partly because I know I don’t care.
But I still challenge my own reactions in the film and would be interested to hear yours.

Do you date some races and not others? What does that say about you (and me) – are these preferences bigoted or are they acceptable?

I liked Kili,he is a dream boat. But I also found Professor Snape pretty sexy.Is that weird?

I think Thorin is purposely the least dwarfy-looking dwarf in the movie, so he’s supposed to be hot. That’s how they sell tickets, right? I reckon he and Aragorn have a fair bit in common.

As an aside I went and saw gangster squad on the weekend and by the end of the movie I’m not sure I can tell you much other than I want to have lots of sex with Ryan gosling and spent the duration of the film in fantasy land with him our children and pets and – a lot of sex.
I managed to turn a violent movie into a porno in which I was the star.
I am in danger of turning into a crazy teenager over him……

You are so not alone! If you look around the web, you’ll see there is a lot of strong attraction going to Richard Armitage and his character Thorin. Both are beautiful, also very soulful and compelling. The actor is 6’2″ and had some interesting thngs to say about playing a dwarf. You might want to look him up!

While I definitely think that some of the African races are far superior in looks to any other race on earth I tend to find that once I get to know a person I don’t really see them for their physical features anymore but rather their personality. Not to say that I don’t appreciate their beauty but in my mind I don’t classify people as my Asian friend, red headed friend or friend with a limp, but rather as my friend from work, the gym, my daughters day care.
I accidentally told my husband once that he was the exact opposite of my dream man: dark hair, blue eyes, overweight and wearing undies that his mum bought him, but that he is the most handsome man I’ve ever been with. It was meant as a compliment albeit a pretty clumsy one.

We tend to consume people in the media – with some of them it’s a bit like fast food………..we consume their character in a film or on TV or in a music video and then it’s – NEXT !
Peter Dinklage is pretty compelling viewing in “Game of Thrones”.
Richard Armitage likewise in “Spooks” & “Robin Hood”
Aidan Turner is a beautiful, scruffy, Irish vampire (yikes !) in the British version of “Being Human” as well as “Kili the dwarf” in “The Hobbit.
Lee Pace starred in that film masterpiece “The Fall” and TV series “Pushing up Daisies” before his brief appearance as the decorative Elven King in “The Hobbit”.
Michael Praed was the best Robin Hood ever in “Robin of Sherwood” – wait a minute, who’s he ?…..Anyone remember him ?
Well, that was in the 80′s and years later there’s still an active fan-club for him (he stars in West End shows) and his cast – a lingering testament to how passionately this very Tolkein-styled TV series was consumed.
Some stereo-types are preferred over others and it’s all quite natural and only very rarely racist………..usually you’re a racist if you intend harm to others because of their race and what’s worse – you act on it.
I have a preference for men who are brilliant and funny and thankfully – I got one….lol.

The heart wants what the heart wants. Goes double for the loins. But an intense, husky voiced princeling with piercing eyes and a way with an axe? Who cares about height, and where does the queue form?
One of my first serious literary crushes was on Miles Vorkosigan, who, if there were any justice in the world, would be played by Peter Dinklage in a hit mini-series. Clever, dashing, funny, heroic space pirate with osteogenesis imperfecta for the win! Come on HBO; there’s no way it could lose!

My still burning literary crush is for Diarmuid in Guy Gavriel Kaye’s Fionavar Tapestry. In my mind I have re-written his untimely death and now that I think about it, Richard Armitage could play him beautifully. Other notable crushes: Atticus Finch and Julian from the Famous Five. I am in front of you for the RA queue, no pushing in front.

Why shouldn’t people be attracted to little people?
That’s like saying “Is it strange I am attracted to Indian/Black/Chinese people?”

Shankari, you are so funny. You crack me up every time! Thanks for your writing that puts a smile on my face every time.
Peter Dinklage. He’s in heaps of stuff but the role that caught my attention is his golden globe winning part in Game of Thrones. Very sexy guy!

Thank you Katy! We have just finished Season 1 (which involved some serious sleep deprivation but it was worth every surprise beheading). Tyrion is gorgeous although how vile are his siblings?

I have a thing about Asian women.
Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Filipina….they are just so beautiful and graceful. Doesn’t matter whether they be young or old, fat or thin.

Oh shankari, I have a girl crush…

Yeah I spent the whole movie thinking he was hot too!

haha it’s not biggoted. I think it has a lot to do with why gay men tend to hook up exclusively with other gay men, and how straight women tend to hook up with straight men. You know, you can’t help who you’re attracted to! It’s not biggoted or racist, it’s nature saying whatever it has to say.
My friend from my first year of uni is an African American girl, and she always joked about how ridiculous it was that she was only attracted to blonde white guys! And me, I am not attracted to black guys, same as how some girls only like date guys with muscles.
Just because you don’t want to sleep with someone doesn’t mean that you are a racists! What a ridiculous thing to even suggest.

I once had a conversation with a sri lankan friend of mine, who told me she would only date sri lankans. My reply was “Yeah I totally get it, I only really dig white Australian guys” (Im a white Australian) and she called me racist……..
Is it cos I said “white”? Because Australia IS so multicultural that just saying “Australian guy” didn’t seem to convey what I was saying…. Im friends with guys of every colour on the ethnic rainbow!
loading...
Thank you both for your comments. I agree, who you are attracted to is just who you are attracted to. There’s no value judgement, no sense of racial superiority, in that. I was interested to hear about the Sri Lankan friend’s response – and I wondered if my blog post might get more comments from people on the issue of ethnic communities that still feel dating and marrying within the community is the best/proper/right way. When I was younger our SL community was like that but it has been really interesting to see that change – largely because older generations are simply forced to adjust to the changes made by younger generations.
I think saying “white” is fine – there are so many colours and backgrounds in the Australian rainbow, I think if I tried to find a substitute word for white I would just sound verbally clumsy! “Of Anglo-Saxon descent” would take too long for me to remember/construct mid-sentence.

I love Richard Armitage, I really do. But I’d still rather be stuck in an elevator with Aidan Turner (The dwarf Kili)

I liked Kili as well, and Aiden turner was great in Being Human.
I agree with the North and South recommendations. It is my favourite adaptation.

Me too

I have a friend who is a dwarf, and all the women LOVE him!

Like Wee man from jackass!

Is he *ahem* three-legged?

It is the eyes. So dreamy!!!

The Queen of the Elves does it for me, but the thought of a woman being able to read my mind freezes me with fear. She would know if I thought her bum looked big in that robe, even if I said it didnt.
I also imagine the amount of Napisan we would go through, with all that white gear she wears.

She is an elf, their clothes are probably made of magical threads and repel any dust or dirt!

The white floaty toga wouldn’t work in our house either. I’d be covered in pesto and weetbix at the knee level by lunchtime. But damn, she is beautiful isn’t she.
loading...
So it’s not just me who found herself weirdly attracted to a middle earth dwarf

I read the article and then thought I would browse through the comments expecting comments on using politically uncorrect words like ” dwarf” and other generally negative comments about the article, BUT instead found comments on the actor and how hot he is and how there are many women fantasies about him. How refreshing.

Hey ChrisM, I was really worried about that and braced for it too. I had a chat with Jamila before we published this one but I think she knows the excellent MM community better than I do and she loved the piece, knowing exactly the way I meant it. From the comments I can see that the readers do too, and I am really grateful for that.

Loved this piece, Shankari. Like I love everything you write.
Thank you. Xx

I have had a big crush on Richard Armitage since I saw him as John Thornton in the BBC’s “North and South”. I love everything about that Mini series, and regularly re-watch it.
RA has that same repressed passion, and brooding quality in N&S that Darcy has in P&P.
North and South has quite a bit to offer (as a story) as it is about far more than a romance. It is all about the Industrial Revolution in England, and the working conditions of the workers in the cotton mills. It covers ideas about Unions and the “Masters” that run the mills, and what responsibilities each group has to the other. Margaret, the female protagonist, struggles with her role as a Gentlewoman, which brings expectations of being quite passive, in spite of the fact she would like to be able to do more in the world, and the fact that her family has very little money, which means she has to get her hands dirty, domestically.
I have not seen the Hobbit yet, but watched quite a bit of the really trashy Robin Hood, just because RA was in it. There is something very charismatic about him.

I watched him as Guy of Gisbon in BBC’s Robin Hood as well and I found him attractive then. One of my friends who know my love of BBC Drama told me to watch North and South and from then on I was hooked. Gotta love the train scene at the end. Who knew a man could look so good with shirt unbuttoned a little, sleeves rolled up and a waist coat.

Well, I have a crush on Peter Dinklage aka The Imp/Tyrion Lannister in GoT. He’s a vegetarian and advicate for farm animals…who cares if he’s on the short side. Appearances really count for very little in my opinion. I only have one condition regarding who I would date and who I will approve of my kids dating: No hunters. Anyone who enjoys killing animals is not welcome in my family.

Loved him in Death at a Funeral (there are also a few other hotties in that movie!) and The Station Agent!
loading...
yay, Peter Dinklage…..I fell in love with him in Station Agent. So did Peter Hellier, which is why he is in And I Love You, Too, a lovely little movie.

There are also a few audiobooks read by him…
Glad to see I am not the only one with a RA crush!

If you really want to swoon, watch Richard Armitage in the BBC series “North and South”…oh my!!

And the BBC’s Robin Hood!! Lordy lordy…

Richard Armitage in Robin Hood …. I just couldn’t understand why Marian didn’t ride off with Sir Guy. He was tall, dark, handsome and looked amazing in all that black leather. Robin was this short weedy bloke with a bad haircut. The woman had no taste.

Or when he married The Vicar of Dibley. I think there is a RA cult forming here!! lol
Gorgeous!

Oh my – so much RA love! Perhaps a pervy gallery is in order?

I *loved* those Vicar episodes!

North and South OMG! “Look back…look back…” aaaahh. That was the show that turned me on (LOL) to the delights of RA. If you like Pride & Predjudice you will love it. Ever since then I’ve been one of the Armitage Army!!!

I have just joined the Armitage Army after seeing The Hobbit. I have always adored him as John Thornton. The “look back” scene is also one of my favourites.
loading...
He was also in Strike Back. HIs character in that reminds me a bit of when he was Lucas on Spooks.
loading...
I have been a Richard Armitage fan since his Spooky days. Nice to see I’m not alone. Beats Ryan Gosling hands down
