    So sad.

I feel so strongly about same sex marriage – it is just so wrong that it isn’t legalised yet. One thing that would really get my vote and make me a truly proud Australian is if we can set an example to the rest of the world and legalise it asap.

I am in full support of gay marriage but I also believe that religious institutions should not be forced to marry a gay couple if it is against their beliefs. I am catholic (but disagree with a lot of church’s teachings), however the catholic church believe that a marriage is between a man and a woman for the purpose of creating life. That is why the teach against sex before marriage and are against contraception as they also believe that sex is for the purpose of procreation. And no one can deny that, biologically, a man and a woman is required to make a baby! And this has been the catholic teaching for centuries. That us why the catholic church is so opposed to gay marriage. I for one don’t have an issue with gay marriage and I am all in support of same sex couples who have a loving and committed relationship having that recognized by the law. I think that we would get closer to that being the case if churches were not legally obliged to perform these marriage ceremonies. If the church didn’t have to do this (not sure why a gay couple would necessarily want to get married in a church whose fundamental beliefs were so different to theirs) but gay couples could marry via a civil ceremony, then I think society would come closer to achieving same sex marriage. I am all for acceptance of everyone but the reality is that the church will probably never change their position, so we have to look at a practical solution to try to achieve this equality.

Oh, I agree. Even the bills currently before Australian Parliament have provisions that wouldn’t force religious institutions to conduct marriages.

That’s fine, they don’t own the institution so we’d be able to get married elsewhere!

That’s fantastic! Then I very much hope the catholic church butts out and the bills get passed. There is far too much hatred and nastiness in the world. If people love each other and we can all accept people for who they are then I believe that can only make the world I better place.

I do not think churches have ever been compelled to perform marriage ceremonies for anyone they did not want to marry. Remember having friends who wanted to get married in church being knocked back because they were not members of that congregation, they were marrying outside of their faith etc.
Hell, I’m old enough to remember when the only place a divorced couple could marry in Sydney in a church was at the Wayside Chapel, Kings Cross. Both my parents remarried there, that causes issues, believe me!

Marriage is an institution that was created by bible believing people. So marriage is kinda owned by the religions…. however in this modern world marriage also now means it comes with certain legal stuff that gives access to both parties as though they are the one entity. If anyone wants this legal access then it should be granted. The government is no longer bound by religion and so our laws should not be bound by them either. I think the word marriage though is a sacred affair that is and always will be owned by religions of God and they should be allowed to keep it. For everyone else that wants the legal stuff then perhaps a civil union celebration or a fancier name should occur for them.

In regards to the Catholic Church belieiving that marriage and sex is only for procreation this is just part of the hypocrisy of the Catholic System. They have strayed too far from the bible truths. Marriage is indeed for a man and woman. Also according to the bible sex is only for married couples. So for people who believe in God then I’m sorry you have to follow all the rules of the bible… not just the ones that appeal to you… No where in the bible does it state though that sex is only for procreation… God wants married couples to love and enjoy each other’s union daily.

According to the scriptures I will love everyone on this planet regardless of their orientation towards absolutely anything. It’s not for me to judge… only to love all my neighbours. I’m mare than happy to share a beer or coffee or a bbq with anyone.

So out of interest – if the Catholic Church thinks marriage is for procreation – do they then refuse to marry a woman who has gone through menopause?

No marriage isn’t owned by the religious.

It is possible for people to be progressive and believe in god but not agree with everything that is written in the bible. Let’s face it the bible has a lot of outdated views.

Marriage predates the Bible by a long way, and has existed in many societies that never embraced Abrahamic religions. It was not created by “Bible believing people”.

Marriage wasn’t “created by bible believing people” the concept of marriage predates christianity by thousands of years. Marriage is very ancient dating back beyond recorded history and was practiced by all people of many cultures, ethnicities and belief systems on all continents. Christianity appropriated the concept and adapted the ceremony but it certainly didn’t invent it, there’s plenty of evidence that shows this.

WRONG! Marriage predates Christianity by centuries! It was originally a PAGAN ritual!

So if it predates history then where is this evidence you speak of ? I didn’t say christianity created marriage… I said it merely states it in the bible that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Also you may believe in God but you had better watch out… As the bible is God’s word. He put His rules in the bible to make it clear what he intended for mankind. You can’t simply choose to follow some parts of the bible and leave others out. Being homosexual is not part of a modern society. Homosexuality has been practiced by mankind for thousands of years and is mentioned in the bible. Unfortunately one of the rules of getting in to God’s eternal kingdom is that you do not practice sex with someone of the same sex. It’s clearly stated along with a bunch of other rules in there that all of mankind at some stage has broken. So don’t worry just because you have had same sex relationships doesn’t mean you can’t get in to heaven. If you believe that Jesus Christ the only son of God is God and that he has forgiven your sins and that you will follow his rules for life then we can all get in to His eternal Glory. You can have life long friendships with the same sex… It just states that sex is for married couples ( a man and a woman ). If I have sex outside of marriage with anyone or thing (and a lot of that was practiced thousands of years ago) then I’m in the same boat. By accepting Jesus as my saviour and carrying him in my heart I can now be saved. So guys / gals loving someone of the same sex is all good… just control your fleshly desire and enjoy each others company in all other things.

Well Michael, firstly I didn’t say it predates history, I said it predates recorded history, meaning that at the beginning of our recorded history marriage was already an established tradition, not something that was invented after we began keeping written records. Secondly you did explicitly state that the institution of marriage was created by christianity, it was the first thing you said. I quote: “Marriage is an institution that was created by bible believing people”. And finally I don’t believe in god (any god, there are many that people believe in, not just the Christian god) so I’m not too concerned about what morals the bible suggests I should be following. I believe in equality, and that means equal rights for everyone regardless of sexuality, race, class, age, gender or any other qualifier that you want to suggest. Equal rights means treating all love as equal and legalizing same sex marriage is an important step towards doing that.

So is eating shellfish etc in Leviticus, but vey few seem to care about that.

The bible also states that the reverence and worship of God should be a private and humble thing. Kinda knocks out the US televangelists and Hillsong.

My mother is a born again Christian who supports same sex marriage. I don’t think she’s going to be kept out of heaven for that.

That was absolutely heartbreaking. Although I’m straight, I’ve always been a staunch supporter of equal rights. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a human rights issue – your sexuality does not make you any more or any less of a human being than anyone else.

I listened. And I am appalled that we are even having this discussion in this day and age. No-one stopped me from marrying, and in the unfortunate event of the death of my partner, no-one could do this to me. I am loud and proud in my support for marriage between two people who love each other. It doesn’t matter if they are opposite or same sex. Love is love.
