I defy you not to be incredibly moved by this video.

The World Cup is over but it may just have a legacy beyond soccer. The magnificent Queen Rania of Jordan, along with the head of FIFA, Sepp Blatter used the World Cup as an opportunity to launch and promote an amazing campaign called 1GOAL: Education for All.

Unlike the World Cup, 1Goal is an ongoing program and I defy you to watch this video that was shown at the opening ceremony and not be incredibly moved by it.

1GOAL seeks to mobilise support to send a message out to world leaders to work harder to achieve universal primary education, which is one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The MDGs were developed in 2000 so that governments would work together to more aggressively address the issues and challenges that the world’s poor face. 1GOAL seeks to address Goal 2 which is to:

“Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.”

According to the 1GOAL website

1GOAL is a campaign seizing the power of football to ensure that education for all is a lasting impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. By bringing together footballers and fans, charities and organisations around the world, together we can call on world leaders to make education a reality for 72 million children by 2015.

QUICK FACTS

  • The majority of children denied an education are girls
  • 72 million children are not in school
  • 776 million adults cannot read this sentence
