Qantas to offer refunds or change of destination to anyone affected by US immigration ban.

By  Alexandra Beech.

Qantas has confirmed it will offer a refund or change of destination to passengers affected by the United States’ new temporary ban on immigration.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday put a four-month ban on allowing refugees into the US and temporarily barred travellers with passports from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The move is aimed at protecting America from terrorism and has already seen several travellers detained and others barred from boarding US-bound flights.

Qantas said it had noted the change to US entry conditions and would try to help affected customers.

“We will reflect this change in our processes and booking systems, however it is not likely to materially impact Qantas passengers,” it said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Australia said the airline always advised international travellers to ensure they had the documentation required to enter their chosen destination.

Liberal MP Jason Falinski said he understood the ban could be a concern for Australians with dual citizenship.

“That’s really unfortunate that that’s happened,” he said.

“Obviously the Australian Government, where there will be or might be some detrimental effect, will make representations to the United States Government to try and alleviate that or remove that particular problem.”
