This is a movie still from Kate Winslet's film, The Reader. So accustomed are we to seeing fake boobs in movies and magazines and on TV, seeing the real thing can be a visual shock. But in a GOOD way. Because this is what many many women see when we look in the mirror. And other than the mirror, it's extraordinarily rare to see other real boobs. Which can leave many of us feeling inadequate about our real boobs. If there were more real boobs depicted in popular culture, perhaps more women would be happier with what they had. Do you think? Send a link to this post to all your female friends as a sign of solidarity.
After her most excellent double win at the Golden Globes (for best supporting actress and best actress), Kate went on Oprah and Oprah high-fived her for having real breasts. And she truly does deserve high-fiving because imagine how much pressure there must be in Hollywood to conform to the utterly unrealistic fakery that almost everyone in Hollywood applies to their bodies. Clip of Kate and Oprah after the jump. It's heaven. Bravo Kate. My bosoms salute you.

D, thats a bit harsh. Why do you assume her boobs are gross? The media tends to dictate whats beautiful..but it doesnt mean its true just because VOGUE etc say so.
Yeah Victoria Beckham is really harsh looking I reckon..her body isnt soft or feminine at all..
I can see they have definately photoshopped alot of the harshness off her..her body appears softer and more healthy looking in the Armani campaign.
Remember all that uproar about the Perfume campaign she did with David? Saying they made her butt look bigger than it really is? lol. Its funny..people lose weight so that they can look thin…and then photoshop puts it back on..lol
Isnt it ironic?

Kate is fantastic for being a real woman. Bells I agree, Kate was a curvy girl in Titanic, now she’s looking rather thin, so I think that has help shrink her boobs too.
Julia-Maree as for VB, she has an eating disorder and is so far from a healthy weight – she could never look normal ! And of course photoshopped pics

She is delicious, real, raw – Kate Winslet, you are a goddess. Love your boobies, love you.
D – you’re missing out on a whole world of goodness if you decide not to have children based on what your breasts could potentially look like (BTW – Kate Winslet looks wonderful, her breasts have nurtured, loved, oh the milky goodness – can I rave enough about KW?).

That just made my day! Go Kate!!

According to the latest Vanity Fair (Kate is on the cover) she said “Do I want an Oscar? You bet your @#%ing ass I do!” And that cover, where she’s wearing high heeled sandals and a gold bracelet, with a coat slung over her shoulders – and that’s it – shows a beautiful woman – no cleavage, but not pretending, either.

How funny that when Nicole Kidman was preparing for this role she was apparently trying to put on weight and here we have Kate Winslet who looks decidedly slimmed down.

Hmmm, I take it D stands for Dickhead (re: previous comment).

omg. that is definitely yet another reason not to have kids. ew!

Love Kate Winslet. She doesn’t have that removed air that many other celebs do. And she’s gorgeous (including the boobs!)
I’ve breast fed two babes and I wouldn’t have the confidence to do nude scenes like that!!

I’m surprised that I initially found the photo shocking, but this reaction was quickly replaced by a feeling of liberation. It is “normal” to see fake bodies in the media, but so rare to see real bodies. I think this may well be a community announcement. Thank you.
I just showed my husband this post and your site. His response – Mia is a truely modern woman.

Kate Winslett has always been real and that’s why she had the courage to do this. Bravo to her! I only had one child but my large boobs are saggy after breastfeeding him for close to one year and my tummy will never be the same after a c-section. My doctor says that no amount of exercise in the world will alter the look of my shrivelled tummy as the muscles inside my tum were damaged and it will always cause a rippling effect. I have always been self-conscious about my body but if more “celebrities” did this we would feel more real instead of fussing about every bloody wrinkle and body flaw. Most of them probably go under the knife after they have had their kids. I want to know how Victoria Beckham looks so amazing in those latest photos of her in that undie ad campaign after THREE caesars and she has the audacity to say “I look awful naked”! She must have had something done.

Oh YAY! I love, love, LOVE her and her real, proper saggy mummy boobs. Thanks a million for posting this, Mia. I am starting my weekend uplifted by more than the power of my bra!

Hey Mia (and other gals!) to make you feel better too, this is actually a pregnancy thing not actually a breastfeeding thing. I made some comment to my Ob/Gyn when I had my first son about how my boobs were never going to be the same after feeding him (9lb 10oz born and an eating machine!) and he laughed and said “oh no I’m afraid that horse had already bolted once you fell pregnant” – apparently breastfeeding is actually better for the boobs than not (I can’t remember why but he did explain it at the time). Kind of ties in with what kzmet posted, about them “deflating” right after pregnancy if you don’t breastfeed LOL
I’m actually at the other end of the spectrum and annoyed that mine are still too big for my liking and never lost a bit – after 3 kids I can’t fit into any of my gorgeous old pre-baby bras anymore, but I guess I should be thankful and figure they balance out the horrid belly skin and stretchmarks LOL
But yay Kate Winslet, more power to you, will send this to all the lovely ladies I know!

LOL!! Thats hilarious Lulu!

yes but look how much weight she’s lost. In titanic, she was a fairly normal size – she’s quite thin now – so I think this is a combination of breastfeeding and being a couple of dress sizes smaller than she used to be.

Err, people who read the blog at work might prefer that picture not quite so visible.

wow!! i have never been a big fan of Kate, but she has definitely SOARED in my consideration after this. it’s when you see the real thing that you realise HOOOOW distorted your view and expectations of what boobs are meant to look like are. even when you have had kids and breastfed yourself. i’m certainly feeling a lot more normal all of a sudden!

My bosoms salute you too Kate. I actually think they don’t look too bad and especially after breastfeeding two children. She is a true beauty and a great talent.

Just found the answer to my own question:
What causes sagging of breasts?
Sagging or drooping of breasts is a natural, inevitable process that happens to all women at some point – except those with fairly small breasts. The most notable sagging happens with the process called breast involution (see below), but breasts can start drooping a little at any age, because they do NOT have muscles in them. They have ligaments and connective tissue. When the gravity pulls the breasts down, those ligaments and the skin can stretch, and so the breast then droops. This depends on the elasticity of your skin and of your ligaments, as determined by your genes and diet, and also on normal aging processes. Obviously large breasts will sag easier since the gravity is pulling them down more.
Breast involution is a process where the milk-making system inside the breast shrinks because it’s not needed anymore. This happens either after weaning, or right after pregnancy if you don’t breastfeed at all, or during menopause. When the tissues inside breast shrink, and the skin surrounding it doesn’t, the breast can look ‘empty’ and saggy. Over time, some fat gets deposited back to the breast so it will look somewhat fuller but sagging usually remains.
Cheers!

that’s made my day – I was just bemoaning to my hubby how my boobs are not what they used to be pre-breastfeeding. I’ve always thought Kate was a sex-kitten, and maybe now I can start to believe I still am, too

Wow, very brave she did have magnificent bosoms in Titanic, but then its shocking how much “volume” you lose when you breastfeed. I wonder why though, I wouldn’t mind knowing the medical reasons. Thank god for good bra’s thats all I have say. My mum had a botched breast reduction and after seeing that- believe me ladies, nothing would get you near a scalpel to “fix” the percieved problem.

Oh wow..it is shocking…from memory…her breats in Titanc look very different. But then again, she hadnt had any children then i dont think.
But I do applaud her courage. How many women at her age, who’ve breast fed, not had any surgery…would do that?
I am loving Kate Winslet more and more these days.
