i have an empty nest now. My 3 are one, working interstate lives with partner, one married expecting twins and one in the army. They all still "need" me for various things. It was hard at first not having the constant company and "busyness" but It's great now. I love it the freedom and I love when they choose to include me in their bits and bobs or when they require a hand.

Great article! I am a stay at home mum and I get that guilty feeling about not contributing to our household income. I also feel pretty crappy when people ask me "So when are you going back to work?" When I tell them I am not in the forseeable future I usually get a response of "Oh...." People have no idea what to say. My husband loves me staying at home, I do not want anyone looking after my son that does not make him their top priority, which of course can't happen in day care, so I am willing to stay at home. I get to have quality time with both my sons (8 month old baby and an 11 year old) and because my husband works shift work I get to have the occassional "me" day, which I think helps me fill the well and make me a better mother. Working or stay at home mothers - we all do our best. We woman just need to stop judging and being critical of those that do things a little differently to how we do it. We have enough guilt that we put on ourselves! We need support from the sisterhood.

Anyone consider that some of us go back to work because it means the difference between paying the mortgage/rent or being without a roof over our heads. I never want to miss out on any milestone but I love tucking my daughter into her warm bed at night knowing she's safe and secure. Sometimes it's not just about climbing the corporate ladder....

Being a Stay At Home Mum has given me an opportunity to be there at all times for my kids...and before you berate me for being sanctimonious, ALL times have included the vomit that won't end, the boring chats with my then two year old, the endless questions from my six year old, the isolation from my peers and the distance from my husband.
Being a Mum, of any kind, is in the trenches stuff. It is endless and difficult at times, rewarding and humourous other times.
I don't believe that any one way is the right way. Even when we get to the 'end' (when is that anyways??) there isn't a report card, or a certificate waiting to grade our parenting....is there?!

Thanks so much for this article!
I am physically and emmotionally spent post being on a committee to organise a fete for the past year. I also do paid work a couple of days a week and have 3 kids aged from 9 - 4. I have spent a lot of time feeling guilty and feeling like I am doing a lot of things not very well. A timely article, thank-you!
