alphabet 380x526 UPDATED: Most hated names. Is yours on this list?

UPDATE: And just when you thought we’d reached a critical mass of ridiculous, Levi Johnston has revealed what he intends to call his unborn daughter.

Breeze Beretta Johnston.

Breeze is, er, interesting enough but Beretta? That’s a type of gun, for those playing along at home.

You might remember Levi from such roles as former boyfriend to Sarah Palin daughter Bristol and father to their child Tripp, so the boy’s got form.

Here’s our original post:

Kimberley. Adrienne. Jennifer.  Kayla.  Hope.

Don’t worry. They’re not the names on the ‘Most Hated Baby Names’ list published this week. Nope, not by a long shot. No, those names are the ones I decided – when I was 18 – that I’d call my future daughters.  It’s possible I was *cough* somewhat addicted to Days of Our Lives at the time.  (Because that’s what you want to do right? You want to name  your child ‘Hope’ after a character who got amnesia, was taken hostage on a deserted island, impersonated a European Princess while her husband married a crack-head, ex hooker police officer before becoming a serial killer. Bad omen, anybody?)

No, by the time I actually had my children Ava, Georgie and Fin, Brad and I had thought long and hard about their names. Which really means that after mocking each other’s suggestions for eight months we settled on those names out of sheer exhaustion. I’m joking. Okay not really but the point is we liked those names and frankly we didn’t care if nobody else did.

Until, well, right about now.

This week Yahoo Shine published a list of the world’s most hated baby names.  Here’s what they said …

The list comes from Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby. She conducted an “informal” study and came up with the list. In general she found people hate gender-bending” names in which a masculine name becomes feminine — like Addison or Madison.

As well, people despise trendy names … though obviously not everyone does or they wouldn’t be trendy, right? Also on the list of hate are names that are difficult to spell (Kaitlyn) and those that are similar versions of other names (Jayden, Brayden, and Kayden).

Here’s the full list (with notes from Live Science) … brace yourself:

10. Bertha (author's note: duh!)

I find that list baffling.  I mean, how did Na-A (Nadasha) not make it on there?  And what’s wrong with Madison and Mackenzie? I like all those names except maybe Bertha.

At the risk of sounding like Pollyanna, in the end who cares what the world thinks of your name or those of your children? List shmist, I say.  And now that I think of it, Hope Sparrow has a nice ring to it.

Is your name or  are your children’s names on this list?  Are you happy with your own name?

I just cant, for the life of me, imagine someone giving birth and holding their precious baby for the first time and saying ‘he looks like a Trevor’….or…..’she looks like a Ruth’.

My daughter’s name is Nina Mary. It took a long time to settle on that name but I’m so glad we did (my ex-hubby and I). The middle name Mary is a tradition in our family – there’s been a Mary going back to the early 1800s. At one point there were four of us but now only three left. The only thing is that she can’t get those ‘personalised’ pens, badges or sticky notes with her name on them. That annoys her especially because her little half sisters always get things with their names on them at Christmas.

I am a Catherine (officially) and my husband is Thomas and we both really like very classic, simple names.. but unfortunately they seem to be the names that are always on the top 10 lists!

We called our girls Sophie and Grace, (although Grace was stillborn and we felt that Grace was a nice name for a little girl that was not going to grow up, we would have chosen something different if she had lived.)

I am currently pregnant with a boy and our current favourites are Henry or Jack.. (See I told you.. all very common names).
If we had another girl in the future I think she would be Emily.

I actually really love old fashioned names like Maude and Edith but my husband always shakes his head when I suggest them!

I’ve met people with names I hated who turned out to be beautiful people, and so my perception of those names changed. The same has happened in reverse, where I’ve loved a name until someone has turned me off it.

Parents shouldn’t spend nearly as much time worrying about WHAT they’re going to name their children as WHO they are raising their children to be.

theres a fine line between trendy and bogan… and sometimes they can be the same thing.

Xal (pronounced Crystal) is my favourite name to hate.
Its about as effective as calling your kid akjlksdjglsga and saying that its pronounced as Sally.

I was at mcdonalds recently with an elderly friend and heard a Mum calling out to “OCEANIA, GET BACK HERE!” … both my friend and I had to bite our lips to keep from laughing. Ridiculous, especially when its being expelled from the mouth of a bogan with a string of expletives following it. All class.

I’m going to name my next baby a good strong, “normal” name like… Michael or Samuel…

Mamamia, was it really necessary to have the names list in photo box format? Especially when you know many of us access the site by phone and/or have difficulties viewing images like that…
A list would have been easier and quicker.

actually probably more to the point, accessibility is a really important issue that is frequently ignored by Mamamia – no videos are subtitled and transcripts not provided. I don’t know whether the photo galleries are accessible to people who are blind or with low vision, but so many accessibility items are so easy if you just plan a little more.
And today is the day of action for the National Disability Insurance Scheme – has mamamia covered this? There were massive crowds in the Sydney one.

We have selected quite an old literary (and cinematic) name for our child that is unusual and will no doubt be perceived as something we have made up, therefore bogan.

Horrible names are not confined to recent times. I well remember my grandmother, who was born ijust after World War 1, complaining in anguish about her names.

“Winifred Flossie” she said, “who would give their daughter such a burden to carry throughout her life?”

She was well into her 60s when she told me this. Childhood teasing had robbed her of any confidence in her name and she never got it back as an adult. I’m sure if she were born now, she’d change it by deed poll.

Can’t say I like any of the names on the list but hey, vive la difference. I think I would be pretty hurt if everyone was bagging the name I loved. Its a pretty personal thing. That being said, I’m fascinated by name trends, especially being pregnant right now. I even study the graphs of what’s gaining or losing popularity. I avoid the super popular or fashionable names and tend to go for ones that are a little different but have still stood the test of time. Ultimately it just has to “feel” right.

In my local paper letters section this week there were a number of letters criticising a couple for calling their newborn girl “Viper”. I think that going to the trouble of writing to the paper to criticise this is terribly rude, its one thing to have an opinion, but to announce such a negative opinion in the paper over such a personal choice that is really nobodie elses business is just not on

We didn’t know the sex of our twins until they were born so looked at her and thought instantly she was an Eloise rather than an Olivia. Her name became Eloise Olivia Grace. Her twin brother is Hamish Thomas Roger…the last name after the obstetrician who did our yrs of IVF etc so deserved that honour. (we chuckle knowing it is ‘one of those daggy names’ but just had to do it) Hamish is proud of the meaning behind his name :)

When I was 15 I was hit by a car whiust riding my bike and whilst I was very lucky, I did end up with a leg in external scaffolding and was bed-ridden for months, during which time I deveoped an addiction to Days. My only excuse is this in back in the days when there was no Foxtel or Austar, and we had to actually go out on the verandah and turn the aerial around to get Channel 10. =D

She says the reality is that once you are known by a name it is very hard to change it. So if – for example – you name a child Katherine but from birth call her Kate, it’s going to be very hard for her to suddenly tell everyone “I now wish to be known as Katherine”

“I have a nephew named Anfernee, and I know how mad he gets when I call him Anthony. Almost as mad as I get when I think about the fact that my sister named him Anfernee.” – Quote from the movie Mean Girls

I always think of this when I hear stupid baby names! Hahaha!

I used to hate my name growing up & being surrounded by multiples of Gemmas/Jessicas/Tegans… I always felt a little left out in my group of friends but now 26 years later I still don’t actually have a friend/acquaintance with the same name as me and quite like that I don’t have to share my name with my friends!!

And my middle name is a hybrid of my grandmother/Great grandma’s names – Emily-Ann and I absolutely adore it, especially now that they are no longer with us :)

As a teacher it is getting harder and harder to read out the class roll – especially when you are a casual and you see new kids every day!! There is always one I will mispronounce (and often more) no matter how hard I try to get them right. People can call their kids whatever they want, and even though a lot of the names out there are certainly on my personal won’t-go-there list for baby names, it’s a personal thing. But I do feel for the kids who constantly have to correct mispronunciations of their name, especially since a lot of it comes from ‘unique’ spellings, even though there is an easily recognisable spelling of the same name already.

I wonder why so many people are determined to have ‘unique’ names for their kids? We have chosen very traditional names for our kids and the most common comment we get when strangers ask us our kids’ names is that they are “normal” and “strong” names.

Haha, funny you should mention that My dad refused to give my two siblings and I anglo names, then my baby sister came along and we MADE him give her an Anglo name (as well as her traditional name) as the amount of crap you have to put up with in Oz over your name is beyond beliveable and we just thought that it would be easier for her. I HATE the anglo nick-name I use now (was given it in school), but use it in work to make other people’s lives easier (have actually being told that a few times). It is always a good feeling seeing parents or older siblings of friends as they actually call me by my name and sometimes I have to do a double take as I am not used to going by it in my everyday life. I should probably just revert to using my name, but the reactions I get from saying my name usually make me so angry, so I relent. Sometimes I wish my dad choose to immigrate to the UK/France (our former colonial masters have a bit more experience with our weird names), then I remember that it is just a name and there are a lot of effing arseholes out there that would rather people lose their culture than teach their children not to be bullying judgemental arseholes that give other kids a hard time at shcool for something they have no control over.

I disagree, Charlotte, Ava, Sebastian, Isabella, Elizabeth, William, Emma, these names can never be categorised as bogan. Classic names remain classic. Bogan names are names that have a tendancy to be mispelt and usually come across as too unusual. As posted before, bogan names are common amongst the working class.

As names trickle down the social order they become ‘tainted’ and that, then, becomes bogan. Example a: Mercedes. It’s actually possible to predict which baby names will become popular in the future due to this trend.

In 10 years, when every outer-suburbs family has a Charlotte and an Oliver, they will be considered bogan names. Baby names go in peaks and troughs – they are not immune from trends.

And this post almost proves my point.

Mercedes is a French girls name. The founder of the car company ‘Mercedes’ named it after his little daughter. As people like to take aspirational names for their children (which is why names trickle down the social order), people of lower classes started to call their daughers Mercedes in an attempt to associate themselves with a name synonymous with luxury and prestige.

And now Mercedes is a ridiculously ‘bogan’ name that few would call their daughters without hesitation.

Then, we got old enough to start to have kids and buy houses. Now, many of us call those same suburbs home. I think probably the latter, but I’m not sure I care much either way these days.

In my opinion it’s far less classy to shout “bogan bogan” than to keep an open mind. I have seen many a person on these name posts shown-up for declaring a name “bogan” when it is actually classic and has a long history that they were unaware of.

My child is in a private ELC, and there are unusual names there – even though their socio-economic demographic would be relatively high. As mentioned by Noelle and myself, names filter downstream. The ‘classic’ names wouldn’t exist if someone hadn’t been brave enough to try them out first.

For the record neither of my children have names which appear on the list above & both are names with long histories and are spelt traditionally. But if they were not I would expect the same respect I give to others.

I hate boys names made into girls names like Phillipa, Roberta, Paula, Paulette. Penelope, Piper, Paige, Margorie, Tracy, Wendy etc are all pretty terrible too.
Kevin, Trevor are a couple of boys names I hate!

I think Remy sounds lovely on a girl and there are plenty of other names which I think do too – from the girl’s perspective. I just feel sorry for the boys who keep losing their traditionally-male names to the other side, as has happened to a few people I know.

When I was a teacher I would cringe at name with ‘original’ spelling, and I was mortified to meet a co-worker who had the spelling of my name when people misspell it…an awful phonetic spelling.

I don’t mind most of the names on that list, but the name Gary I hate, though my brother in law (ex) has that name and he’s ok, but it just screams redneck geek to me. I can’t shake certain associations with names like one girls name I swear I don’t know any women with that name who aren’t bitches. I also cringe at horribly girly names that sound like stripper names, you can’t help think their mothers must have wanted to mould them into these little princess types and they seem to be as shallow as the name suggests.

Whilst waiting to get out of women’s toilets once I heard a morifying conversation where two young girls where squealing at each other ‘Ohh I spell my name since high school with an ‘i’ too, then the other said when she left school she began to spell it with two ‘i’s.
