UPDATE: And just when you thought we’d reached a critical mass of ridiculous, Levi Johnston has revealed what he intends to call his unborn daughter.
Breeze Beretta Johnston.
Breeze is, er, interesting enough but Beretta? That’s a type of gun, for those playing along at home.
You might remember Levi from such roles as former boyfriend to Sarah Palin daughter Bristol and father to their child Tripp, so the boy’s got form.
Here’s our original post:
Kimberley. Adrienne. Jennifer. Kayla. Hope.
Don’t worry. They’re not the names on the ‘Most Hated Baby Names’ list published this week. Nope, not by a long shot. No, those names are the ones I decided – when I was 18 – that I’d call my future daughters. It’s possible I was *cough* somewhat addicted to Days of Our Lives at the time. (Because that’s what you want to do right? You want to name your child ‘Hope’ after a character who got amnesia, was taken hostage on a deserted island, impersonated a European Princess while her husband married a crack-head, ex hooker police officer before becoming a serial killer. Bad omen, anybody?)
No, by the time I actually had my children Ava, Georgie and Fin, Brad and I had thought long and hard about their names. Which really means that after mocking each other’s suggestions for eight months we settled on those names out of sheer exhaustion. I’m joking. Okay not really but the point is we liked those names and frankly we didn’t care if nobody else did.
Until, well, right about now.
This week Yahoo Shine published a list of the world’s most hated baby names. Here’s what they said …
The list comes from Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby. She conducted an “informal” study and came up with the list. In general she found people hate “gender-bending” names in which a masculine name becomes feminine — like Addison or Madison.
As well, people despise trendy names … though obviously not everyone does or they wouldn’t be trendy, right? Also on the list of hate are names that are difficult to spell (Kaitlyn) and those that are similar versions of other names (Jayden, Brayden, and Kayden).
Here’s the full list (with notes from Live Science) … brace yourself:

10. Bertha (author's note: duh!)
I find that list baffling. I mean, how did Na-A (Nadasha) not make it on there? And what’s wrong with Madison and Mackenzie? I like all those names except maybe Bertha.
At the risk of sounding like Pollyanna, in the end who cares what the world thinks of your name or those of your children? List shmist, I say. And now that I think of it, Hope Sparrow has a nice ring to it.
Is your name or are your children’s names on this list? Are you happy with your own name?

Used to have a Chilli, Millie and Lilly in my class, now I have a Jayden, Brayden and Kayden. Amuses me when I have to call their names.

I think it’s really upsetting to have a list of ‘most hated names’ because in the end it comes to personal opinion. My brother is called Tristan, and I think it is a lovely name.
loading...
God, Neveah is my most disliked name. Can’t stand it. There is a local family that call their children car names…..Maserati is one of their girl names!
loading...
My name is Kylie Lynette. I do a class with a Kylie Janette, and a Kylie Annette….
I saw a birth notice for a boy the other day, the parents named him FAWCETT…maybe they were fans of Farrah?
Maybe he’ll grow up to be a plumber. Or a drip.

I hate my name, nobody ever gets it right – even people I’ve known my whole life occassionally get it wrong. I get Kirsten, Kristen, Kristy or even Kirtsy. My two daughters are Charlotte and Penny. Charlotte is the oldest and we intended to shorten it and call her Charlie but when she was born it was obvious she was an old soul so she’s never been called Charlie. Penny is actually Penelope but Penny is easier (and cuter). She’s only two and I would be surprised if she actually knew her name is Penelope.

I know someone who just named their baby boy Attila, Otti for short. And they are teachers, they should know better!

I walked by a classroom that had all pupils names on the door at my children’s primary school the other day and one name certainly stood out – Chardonnay!!! WTF?
loading...
We named our sons Samuel Frank and Henry Jo. I have always liked the name Sam,a classic name and all the Sams I have ever met have always been lovely. And we liked it in all the forms, Sammy, Sam or Samuel. We knew it had always been a well known classic name but didn’t realize quite how popular it had become. In his preprimary class he was part of a team of Sams. Lucky they were all great friends and thought it was funny! Frank came from my Granddad, not very fond of the name but loved him dearly. I am very glad we chose the name Henry, not that common these days but a classic name. My mum didn’t like it at all however! Jo came from my mother in law, we were hoping to name a girl (with the name Wendy Jo picked out) after her but knew that two kids was my limit so she got a boy instead! We didn’t tell anyone our names as we made the mistake of telling some ideas early in the pregnancy and they were ripped apart!

My children are Ryan Connor, Jayden Thomas, Isaac Edward, Alyssa Grace and Bethany Rose. I am University educated and my children all attend private schools so I can’t see the ‘bogan’ connection with the name Jayden. We chose it from an old Gaelic name (Gaedon pronounced as jaydon) which means ‘peacemaker’ and thought it would be cruel to spell it traditionally – can you imagine the ribbing he would have gotten at school with that spelling? Each name was chosen with care and a view to the future. My Jayden is now at University in his 2nd year of his law degree so his name certainly hasn’t done him any harm!

My best friend is notorious for adding ‘h’s’ and ‘y’s to her kids names… Kyhe, Shainah, Mahdysin (Madison) and Ceyahne!! And I girl I went to school with, her name was Dzintra (D is silent) and always thought her kids would have normal names as she hated having to explain hers but she named her daughters Indica, Acacia and Azmara.. has just had a son named Eli James which is the most normal considering her daughters..lol.. hated my name growing up and still do now, Marian (as in Marion, not Marianne) always associated it with old ladies name and have not met anyone younger than me with the name. My boys are Jake Tyler and Cody Phoenix (not realising people would use it as a girls name, Cody loves his middle name, Jake not so much..lol) If I had a girl she was going to be either Caitlin Jade or Violetta Jade… Caitlin became too popular when I was old enough to have children..lol My sister is an Ingrid with a family middle name Magdelena.. safe to say she hates it and wishes our mother stuck to her original idea of Rebecca Jane.. lol
loading...
I used to kinda like my name, but I’m really hating it lately. It’s Khia Lili (Kye-Ah Lily) and I can safely say that it is by far the worst compared to my siblings. While it is a nice name, it’s constantly being incorrectly cpronounced, misspelled, forgotten… The list goes on. I used to want to be known as simply Lili, but my parents refused to go for it-_-
loading...
I’m Emilie, most people (even my brothers) write it as Emily, but I’m pretty much over caring. I’m ambivalent about it as a name.
For my own kids I’d choose – girls: Hannah, Brooke, Elizabeth, Mackenzie, Alexis, Georgina
- boys: Jude, Archer, Asher, Luca

I love this article. Why on earth would you call your kid Nevaeh?!? I love that we dont just have traditional names anymore but i think some people throw class out the windy and try to be creative… no offence to anyone out there with these names… They are horrible. There is nothing wrong with a nice name like Jennifer, or Kate. No need to add a Y where its not needed.
I used to hate my name; Isabelle. i thought it was ordinary and boring but have grown to love it and so glad my parents didnt try and spell it some crazy way…
loading...
I know a baby boy named Rivaeh.
And Isabelle isn’t boring (though pretty common now)! Try Ann for boring!
loading...
My three daughters are: Mikayla Emma, Annalise Georgia and Summer Rose. I’m surprised by some of those names that are the most ‘hated’. There’s alot worse around than those! Also a bit disappointed that ‘Makayla’ is there, I still like my daughters name and wouldn’t change them even if I could. There’s a girl in my daughers school called Obie and another is Pearl, even though I’m not a fan who am I to say whats nice and not. Everyone has their own taste…………………
loading...
It’s because the correct spelling is Michaela.
loading...
Thats in your opinion. To me the ‘correct’ spelling is ‘Mikayla’ lol! To me that is a more feminine way of spelling it. As I said before each to their own.
loading...
Correct as in traditional/original. Phonetic or “creative” spelling of names is often considered tacky or bogan. I wasn’t giving my opinion, I was explaining why people often dislike names like Makayla.
loading...
Agreed, tacky all the way– no offence, its taking a nice name like Michaela and turning it into something that is tacky. but like you say each to their own. people can still be creative and not be tacky, in my opinion
loading...
Actually the correct spelling to everyone else is Michaela, doesn’t matter what you think, it’s wrong. The name comes from the name Michael. It’s spelt with the CH because it comes from Hebrew meaning Who is like God. In Hebrew they obviously have a difference between CH and K.

My “favourite” worst name was one I saw in the baby pages in a Ballarat newspaper a few years ago — brace yourselves…
MADYSN RYVR
(I can’t remember the surname.. I don’t think it matters)
I’m assuming it’s pronounced “Madison River”… wrong, just so wrong….
loading...
Clearly the parents had a terrible fear of vowels (although one managed to sneak in there)!!
loading...
Laughing my head off at that!!
loading...
I live in Ballarat, and I love checking out the paper to see all the weird and wacky names in the birth notices. There are some shockers!
loading...
Here’s one from today:
Shakayla Olivia Alberdina (all given names)
Little sister to Lochlann James.
Yikes!
loading...
Same here for Dubbo, nsw. Some of the names those poor babies get should illegal! Gives us a good laugh though. My kids will probably hate me for having boring names.
loading...
One of my pet hates is parents that have several children & their 2 of their names will go together but one won’t.
For example, my name is Alana, my sister is Alissa; kind of similar as both start with AL & end in A. But then we had a little brother called Bradley! It just doesn’t go! Sorry mum & dad!
loading...
Yep – Mira Sorvino is a prime example of that. She had a daughter the other day named Lucia, which goes beautifully with her other daughter’s name Mattea. But then her boys are named Holden and Johnny. Such a strange sibset…
loading...
I’m an offender of that, my first three kids have strong, traditional Swedish names Axel, Oskar and Freja (the original spelling, my husband wouldn’t let me spell it with a y) and our youngest is Lily, very dainty and English. We just couldn’t agree on another Swedish name so we decided on my favorite English name
loading...
I know three sister called April,May and June
loading...
In my local paper last week there was a baby on the photo page named……PEANUT….for the poor child’s sake and the future school teachers sake (who will have to deal with the bullies, because let’s face it, it’s probably gonna happen with a name like that) I realy hope the parents hadn’t named him yet and just used “Peanut” so it wasn’t just plain old unnamed “Baby” in the paper…….

My name is Vera. My brother is George. George and Vera. Honestly
loading...
Names are funny I have an Ottavia (Girl) shortened to both Tavia and Otti….Should have thought about it more though…gets octavia, talia, thalia. whoops
loading...
I gave my first son James…i wanted Jamie but my MIL talked me out of it haha
It’s better to have a formal name as your first name and nickname
I kinda regret calling my other son Oliver now :/
loading...
My sister’s surname is Brooks, she was given a middle name of Brooke.. Real funny, Mum..
loading...
I cannot recommend reading Freakonomics enough. There is a whole 2 chapters on this topic. Please read it! It’s an excellent book!
loading...
Phew, I was concerned there for a minute! My name is always confused for a “boy’s name”, because so many people have never heard it. Perhaps that is why I don’t have a problem with masculine names becoming feminine? I quite prefer boy’s/masculine names to overly feminine ones. That is just my opinion and people should be able to be creative (but not downright cruel) with their baby names.
Most of these names don’t particulary offend me – I’m not a fan of “Neveah” or the unique spellings (it just makes life harder). Otherwise I think they’re OK.
loading...
My name was so common growing up in the 70ies there were at least 3 Karens in each class. I was determined my kids would have unusual but not wacky names. I now have Phoenix 7 (girl) and Talan 4 (boy). Love there names as much today as the day we choose them.
loading...
I can’t stand it when hipsters call their kids Atticus or Holden or any other distinctive name from classic literature. It’s so self-conscious. Oh, wow! You read! Aren’t you clever! And I can’t stand it when bogans name their kids those same names because some celebrity did it.
Yep, I’m a judgey bitch. I’m down with that.

as a childcare worker, ive meet kids and thought to myself, im never naming my kid that name! lol. but ive also meet some kids with lovely names that i lock away in my name file =)
i had a parent comment at the start of the year that he thought Ava was a unique name, and was surprised to find we had another Ava that attended the same day. i thought to myself, i have known about 10 avas over the past three years!
i love my name – ashleigh, although HATE that people confuse/forget my name and i always get, amy, alecia, alison! not to mention that it always get spelt wrong – ashley, ashliegh, asheligh??!!
one time at school the teacher was calling the roll, reading my name, and still managed to call me alecia!
my aunty is Lynda, and i love that she keep with the y tradition, and called her daughter Lyllian.
loading...
Ashleigh is an awesome name
loading...
MY daughters middle name is Ashleigh
I agree it’s a great name!
btw spell check wants me to change it to Ashley haha

I was given a horrible name as a child (it was tradition in my family to be named after your grandparents). Every called me by my middle name so I had no affinity for my first name but when I finally moved from Primary to High School I took the chance to legally drop my first name. When ever I tell people thought they act as though I am an international drug dealer… Ther eis such a stigma about people chaing their given names… so please take care when naming your child… at least give them one sensible (or boring) name to choose from.
loading...
I’m the same James – named after my grandparent but known alway by my middle name. I legally switched them around when i started uni. very conscious to give my kids usable and easily pronounceable first names!
loading...
Did the same thing, when people use my ’1st’ name I ask who?
loading...
Bentley? Really? Who calls their kid Bentley?!!
loading...
Me. My son is Bentley Joseph, he will be 9 in 3 weeks and if I had my time again I would still call him that. I think it is a strong name and totally suits him.
loading...
I have a friend called Bentley, suits him so well!
loading...
My mother’s name is Remelda, anyone else heard that one before. I have only heard on one other.
loading...
I love the names Odette, Helena and Blair for girls
loading...
In my Year 2 class of 1972, there were five Helens. I always thought this was a classic name but now it seems to have faded out. Does anyone name their daughter Helen these days? I do like my name but would have preferred to be a Helene or a Helena. Not too late to change?!
loading...
I named my daughter Skylar Helen
loading...
Yep, Jayden is the worst name ever.
loading...
It’s bogan. Can anyone imagine a judge or a poet with the name Jayden? Didn’t think so…
loading...
My Ex is a Jayden…and is planning on being a doctor or lawyer >.<
loading...
Jayden/Jaden – awful name. It reminds of Will Smith’s child who I think is a precocious, entitled brat.
loading...
I think Jayden Smith might be named after his mum Jada, and the daughter Willow after Will, just saying. I’m no fan of the name or the kid either.
loading...
Being a Jenifer with one n, I only want to consider names with just one spelling if ever I had children. It may not necessarily make the world a better place, but if those decisions mean that my kids’ lives will be a little bit easier, then so be it.
On certain occasions, parents would also want to consider how their kids’ names can be shortened, eg. Andrew Peacock = Drew Peacock = droopy… This might be a bit rare, though.
Also, if the name is from another language, you want to think about how it’s going to sound in the country where the kid is going to grow up. A name meaning “great king” in Chinese is “Da Wang.” Or it could just simply not sound very nice in English.
loading...
I used to hate my name – particularly in primary school when some nasty little piece of work repeatedly and mercilessly pointed out to anyone who would listen that I had a ‘boys’ name.
I mean why couldn’t I have a pretty name like my sisters… or my cousins… or all my friends… or that girl in gymnastics – oh, how I coveted the name Lisa…
That was until my divine stepfather provided me with a printed list of Queens and Princesses through history who had various deviations of Alexandra as their name – and coupled that with a long list of the international ‘girls’ versions of Alex as opposed to the couple of boy options.
I had a ball refuting the whole ‘boy’ name business and happily making my tormenter eat his words at recess!!
Now I love my name and all it’s shortenings – sometimes I think you have to grow into a name.
I thought carefully about my daughters name, and then settled on something fairly common… In France! Not here – so she has a very unusual name by Australian standards and the only downside I see is that we may never find a pre-printed door mobile, cup or fake number plate with her name… so maybe we’ll just need a trip to Paris to pick those up!
loading...
Glad you like yours, I personally can’t stand it.
What did you call your daughter? I too am pregnant and I really like Monique for a girl.
loading...
Our girls are Luka Renee and Marley Grace, our next girl will be Noa Alina. I love our girls names, not common but not outrageous. I never want my kids to be one of a few in a class or school and have to be referred to as their name and first letter of their last name
loading...
My son is one of three Marley’s (all boys) in his kinder class
loading...
Yea I think it’s more common as a boys name, my girl really suits it though and her middle name being grace makes it more feminine.
loading...
Lol, I actually got my daughter’s name (Harper) from Days of our lives, Harper Deveraux! But I’m not happy that the Beckhams are going to make it common!
loading...
My brother’s birth name was Mikhael which is the Hebrew spelling of Michael (my mum is Israeli) and you make a guttural sound for the kh so it’s pronounced Mi-chai-el but he later changed it to Michael when he was older. He was named after my mum’s uncle who died in the Holocaust. It was often tradition for Jewish families to do that.
I never liked the name Gavin much.
loading...
Phew, no Edie on there! I’m always so relieved when I see it hasn’t made the top 100 most common names too!
Although It’s not like it would change how much I love our little girls name…
loading...
I have an Edie too
loading...
If I have boy twins I’ll call them Matthew and Michael and I don’t care how boring you thnk I am.
but maybe I’ll have Sabrina and Tabitha…. and if you watched too much TV that’s your problem ha ha ha ha
loading...
I absolutey hate my name, hate it with a passion and probably always will.
I cringe when I hear it, write it or speak it.
I named my son Linken – I have never heard of the same spelling and Lincoln was too “old” for me.
loading...
Haha! That list is hilarious (to me!) So many of my friends & family have called their kids those names and a few people I am friends with have those names. I just found it funny!
But i must say I hate ‘made up’ names with a passion!
loading...
my niece made up the name Kydairah Lamae. Pronounced Ki-dair (like hair) ah
loading...
Very American sounding names!
I always enjoy your columns Bec. Always debatable and amusing posts!
loading...
My last name is a nightmare, so I am really glad my parents decided on Amy. Besides, if my older sister had her way I’d be called Henrietta (she loved Thomas The Tank Engine).
loading...
You are so lucky you’re sister didnt have her way! Beryl, Mavis, Henrietta, all hideous names!
loading...
I know Lu! I can joke about Henrietta now, but I’m so glad my parents didn’t let her name for me stick.
loading...
I am Henrietta!!
I’ve always been Henri though, as I’ve never felt like a Henrietta
loading...
I love the names Harriett or Henrietta
loading...
Oh, me too! They were my absolute, definite choices for my future daughters from ages 6-10
Still think they’re gorgeous!
loading...
I have a Harriet and when I was recently pregnant my husband tells me he likes Henrietta but we can’t have that because it’s too the same. We have Eliza Annette, Scarlett Grace, Harriet Ellis and Audrey Maude. I’m really stuck on older names as you can tell.
loading...
How did ‘Michael’ make the list? It’s a total classic!
loading...
If I have a boy I’m calling him Cooper Riley Tyler Bailey Jaxxon Jayden Aiden Brayden Cody Kobie Brody, and if it’s a girl she will be Maddison Mckenzie Mackenna Makayla Taylah Kayla Miley Dakota Montanna.
loading...
My kids are named Cohen Dean and Gracie Rose. If hubby had got his way my son would be Van and my daughter would be Greer. I was actually liking the name Greer till he let slip that his little girlfriend in primary school was named Greer. Clearly the battle was lost right there!
loading...
I LOVE the name Greer
loading...
Awkwardly, I am named after an old girlfriend of my dads. His words: She was a total mole, but her name was nice.
loading...
I always loved the name Isabella and was so annoyed to find the name has been on top ten lists for years now. We still called one of our twin girls Isabella Catherine and the other Lily-Anna Rose. I have always been a huge fan of discussing names especially because i have a boring one with no middle name.

I like my name, but in high school i went on the email data base and counted how many there were in the school and figured out that if someone yelled out “Steph!” during lunch, there was only a 2.6% chance that it was for me. So its taken me a while to like my name and start turning around.
loading...
Hi Steph my name is Steph too and my name has grown on me. I couldn’t stand it when I was younger (and in trouble!) “STEPHAAANIE!” but I quite like my (or our name!) name as it’s not too common but not one of those made up names!
loading...
I thought my name – Kate – had been buried
With the 80′s …. But apparently is becoming popular
Beacause of Princess Kate ….
loading...
We are making a comeback. One day soon we will be FULLY cool.

Growing up with an ethnic name in a very white anglo school, I always wanted to be called a traditional English name.
I am still sick of constantly having to explain to people how to pronounce it and because there are so many versions of it, no one ever remembers how to say it. Starting a new job is always a challenge.
The only good part is that I am a bit like Madonna and can go by my first name and everyone knows who I am.
It has always been the bane of my life so I gave my children easy to spell, easy to say names.
