Snog, Marry, Avoid host and former pop star Jenny Frost gave birth to twin girls last week. And the names that the British celebrity chose for new daughters are… Nico and Blake.
At first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking there was a mix-up in the birth certificates department and that a pair of baby boys somewhere in England are going to be heading off into the big wide world with the names, Mary and Nevaeh.
Not the case.
Jenny is the latest celebrity mother who, probably following months of deliberation, has embraced unisex names for her daughters.
Of course, giving traditionally male names to girls isn’t unheard of. Alex, Sam, Jordan and Andy have been popular for decades. And obviously Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Hayden Panettiere and Taylor Swift’s parents also liked the idea for their daughters.
Yet baby name websites are suggesting that the trend has experienced a resurgence in the last couple of years, with a far wider range of boy names being used for girls.
Last year, Jessica Simpson gave her first daughter a double masculine name, Maxwell Drew. In 2011 the Beckhams called their daughter Harper, a name that is also male in origin.
Meanwhile, singer/songwriter Michelle Branch has a daughter called Owen, Brooke Shields’ eldest daughter is Rowan Francis, and Teri Hatcher has an Emerson.
But wait – the gender-bending fun doesn’t end there. Kelsey Grammer and his ex-wife have a Mason, Ziggy Marley (Bob’s oldest son) called his daughter Judah, CSI: Miami’s Brendan Fehr opted for James, and Martha Stewart has a baby granddaughter named Jude.
Names like Quinn and Rory are also reportedly on the rise, perhaps inspired by female characters of the same names in Glee and Gilmore Girls.
So what conclusion can we draw from all this?
It seems parents are simply being more adventurous in their baby naming. Perhaps we’ll see super-blokey names like Darren, Kevin, Ralph and Barry cross over into baby girl names sometime soon…. or not.
What are your favourite unisex names? Have you given one to your child? Do you think there are boys’ names that don’t work for girls?

When I was a teenager I knew a boy named Kym his sisters name was Corey I always wondered why his parents did that, but Kym was the most masculine guy ever and Corey was an absolute stunner so it worked.
When I was 20 I was in the “I don’t want kids” basket we got a dog who I named Bodhi because I loved that name. Fast forward eight years and I am now a Mum to a little boy. I so wanted to call him Bodhi but my other half wasn’t keen on it at all.
My cousin was pregnant at the same time as me and I remember having this conversation with her, she had a little girl and named her Bodhi. I really dislike it as a girls name but she is just so adorable I will let it slide.
I guess I don’t really mind what other people call their kids but stupid names and stupid spelling up set me. When I was preggo we had an awful time deciding on a name for our boy. We were looking at names when we came across Moo. yes someone has named their child Moo. Then there is an other cousin who has a little girl named Jaiyme. :/

I’m fine with Nico, Blake, Maxwell, Rowan, and Emerson, but I take issue with Owen, Mason and James. People do things to be trendy, but don’t seem to consider how their child’s name will affect their sense of self during the crucial developmental period. Even if your child grows into a confident adult, chances are there will be days when they’re tired and unhappy, and having to explain to some stranger that their name is, in fact, James, just gives them that little extra hassle that really could do without. My parents gave me an uncommon name and the look of vague confusion that crossed people’s faces when I had to introduce myself was so draining. I’ve since changed my name, people recognize it straight away and I feel much better about myself. There have been studies that show children with traditionally established names are more confident and well-adjusted. Please check before naming your child: is this a name you would feel comfortable bearing yourself? If not, please, DON’T FORCE IT UPON YOUR CHILD.

I heared of this couple who were expecting twin boys, got girls so decided to name them Craigette and Waynee. Apparently thinking of girls names were too hard. Although, perhapes even worse a couple who named their child after the place and conception experience…just what you want to know about your parents!

I love the name “Charlie”. Would love to name my daughter if I have any. I think “John” would be a no-no to name a girl.
loading...
8 month old daughter Marley. We were saving it for when we had a boy, last pregnancy, three girls, we stuck with Marley and I love it!

Guilty!!
Our 3 girls are affectionately known as Charlie, Harrie & George
(actual names are Charlotte, Harriet & Georgia)

Timely post. Someone I know just had a baby today. They called him Nation. I’m a little speechless. I love unique names and i dont have kids yet so havent ever had the huge task of bestowing a name on someone but am thinking this is a little too unique? On the topic though, I love a masculine name for a female.
loading...
A relo has Atlas and I can’t remember his brother’s name.
Can’t be too unique. It either is or it isn’t. Unique = one of a kind.
loading...
The others name was probably WORLD. Get it World and Atlas. I hope they find their way in life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
loading...
Atlas is an actual boys name though, if rare in Australia.
Atlas as a boy’s name is of Greek origin, and the meaning of Atlas is “to carry”. Atlas was a mythical Titan who bore the weight of the world on his shoulders, so the name bears connotations of great strength.

I never thought my name would make a comeback. There is hope yet
Wayne

This is so timely for me…..11 weeks until I have to come up with a name, and we’re both blank. Keep ‘em comin’ people, thank you!!
loading...
Wayne is a good one ^^

For a boy or girl?

My daughter is Billie, and I have been told that even at 6 she ‘rocks that name’! We had a big issue with a department store Santa last xmas when he asked her why mummy gave her a boy’s name!
loading...
GREAT name!! I’ll be adding this to my list
I love it!
loading...
When we had our first son we named him Taylor, who is 14 now and I have only ever met one other boy with the same name all the rest were girls, we followed the trend with our other 3 kids, Jordan (boy), Regan (boy) and Brodie (girl), I love my kids names and didn’t do it to follow a trend we just really liked the names for either sex, the one name that most people have commented on is our daughters name as to how beautiful it is for a girl.
loading...
I’m not big on ‘gendered’ things, gendered names, clothing toys… whatever it doesn’t phase me. I also don’t like to judge parents unless they’re neglecting their kid or something like that.
loading...
I like the name James, it’s uncommon for a girl to be named James but it’s technically unisex (it just isn’t given to girls often) . I don’t know whether I’d use it for a girl but I’d definitely consider it.
loading...
I’m expecting my first baby next month, and while both me and my husband love the name Darcy for a boy, we are having reservations about it because it seems to be used more and more for girls, husband is worried he’ll get confused for a girl or teased about having a “girls name”
loading...
I love the name Darcy! That’s in my top list of names (not that I have to worry about that yet, I’m only 20). I agree, it is unisex but I think i’d name my son Darcy, not daughter.
loading...
I work with a little boy with that name except he has the very old spelling D’Arcy. I love it!
loading...
We named our son Elliot, and then friends of ours named their daughter the same thing. awks.
loading...
Thats sorta strange they didnt talk to to you about it, especially as they are friends.
loading...
and then they bought the house next door to you, booked the same family reosrt for a holiday, then started working at your workplace…

I was thinking about naming my daughter McGuilicardy :/

Please explain

Guilty! I have a daughter named Jayden. Practically everyone I knew hated it. I liked Jade but wanted something a little different. I didn’t realised Jayden was such a popular boys name. But my Jayden is stunning and I think her name suits her. I have only heard of 2 other female Jaydens since she was born!

I dropped my daugher off for her first day of prep today and noticed the list of kids in her class; a Shayla and Shaylar, a Taylarh, a Jaylan- the only ‘traditional’ name was an Emma. I must confess, I HATE weird spellings of names and was always going to stick to the traditional spelling for my daughter (Caitlin), but my baby brain kicked in and I misspelled it on the birth certificate as Caitlyn. Lucky we love it now!
loading...
I can’t stand stupid spellings of names. It’s so un-original and not unique at all. It’s just Bogan and Trashy. Purposely spelling a perfectly good name like Taylor to Taylarh is just idiotic and very backwards. To me it shows a lack of intelligence, not creativity. Not to mention the poor teachers who have years ahead of them trying to get the pronunciation correct, and the unfortunate child going through life having to spell it out every time it’s not spelt the correct way. Why make life harder for your children giving them a name, that clearly the parents thought was cool ’cause it’s different’ but is really glaringly obvious a sign that all the ‘stupid people are breeding’…
P.s I’ll let Caitlyn pass as you mistakenly did it.
loading...
I completely agree with the bogan spelling of names, but they aren’t the only ones that have to spell their name. I’m sure my parents didn’t give a thought to my name being difficult, but just think how many ways there are for Rebecca, that’s not including the new ways which I have seen like Rebbeca and Rebekka.
I’ve gone to Bec for ease, but even that is riddled with Bek or Beck.
loading...
My daughters’ names are Ardyn and Bailey. Both traditinally boys names. I obviously don’t see the problem with it.
loading...
Don’t see what all the fuss is about… I’m sure we have all met men with the name Kim, Leslie, Ashley… they are names a woman may have also…. Cameron, Maxwell. Blake etc are just what our generation likes….
loading...
Well, my name is Kieren…and I am female.
loading...
And what’s with parents calling daughters India when they have very unlikely ever been there or plan to, and thus India holds no special significance but is just trendy? I doubt they’d even be able to point it out on a map or globe.
loading...
Or… they like the sound of the name?
loading...
I like the way the word spoon sounds, but I wouldn’t call my child that.
loading...
Maybe they’ve read Gone With The Wind? It’s the name of Ashley Wilkes’s sister.
loading...
HEY!! That’s my name! And actually it’s an old English name… My parents have never been to India but loved the name India. I have met plenty of India’s in my lifetime. And I’m 30!

I wrote a long comment yesterday about naming our daughter Cameron (not after Diaz, buy my great great Scottish grandmother) and the effects this has had, but it never showed up. Sadly this has happened to me at least every other week

Saved it! You just have to scroll down the page a bit to find it

Thanks!! Did you just put that up then? I’d checked back a few times yesterday and couldn’t see it…

I think it’s great & the parents’ prerogative & business.
In reverse, pre this so called trend, there are examples of men being given commonly accepted female names.
John Wayne’s real name is Marion Morrison. Caroll O’Connor was a male actor & comedian, Evelyn Waugh the author, Meredith Wilson the playwright
Here’s a list of some other ‘famous’ men with feminine names: http://www.cassavafilms.com/list9_2010/list9_040510.html
And of course Marilyn Manson & Alice Cooper chose those names for themselves.
I guess whatever suits, and you have the choice with your own children as it is your right to do so. Be happy with that & extend the same courtesy to other parents.
When something sounds unusual to us, it’s just a case of getting used to it and then it becomes normalized.
loading...
Your comments are always so well thought out and wise Carosmile.
loading...
The comedian Jay Mohr has a baby son called Meredith too, it’s a family name
loading...
Please stop. As a teacher I would just like to request you stop this nonsense.
It is hard enough with some of the wacky names out there without having no idea of gender either.
It might seem funky now but when you’re preteen gets to high school ad is unexpectedly more feminine (for a boy) or more masculine (for a girl) you are just leaving them a lot of probelms.
Imagine the puberty ridden angst of teenage Maxwell being told he can stay for detention and the whole class laughing because poor Maxwell is a girl………..
loading...
Why would you not tell someone to their face that they’re having detention? And girls and boys look quite different and usually wear different uniforms, don’t they?
I’d rather a name I can pronounce and that the kid doesn’t have to spell that might be gender neutral than some of the stupid names around.
loading...
My name is Alex, I’m in my mid-20′s and can guarantee I never had any problems with my name at school. I love that my mum gave me a strong unisex name – most people assume I am male and I like making them re-think their assumptions. I am glad I don’t have a ‘cute’ or ‘pretty’ name, but a strong name that isn’t gender specific as it means I can be my own person – regardless of my gender.
loading...
My name is Claire. I am female. I find that my name is strong as well, yet not unisex or gender neutral.
loading...
And Alexandra is the most gorgeous elegant name!
loading...
This might get me shot here, but I really cant stand the Irish names that nobody can pronounce and the spelling bears no resemblance to it. Unless your kids are mixing in Gaelic circles please give them a name they wont have to spell and pronounce for the rest of their lives! Thats what middle names are for.
loading...
Personally I love them! I love seeing how they’re spelled & finding out the correct way to say it, expanding my frame of reference to include other cultures or creeds & their names.
Here’s a great site that helps with pronunciation for us non celtic people. http://www.babynamesofireland.com/
loading...
I used to work with an Irish dude, and it was very handy for exactly that – I’d come in and write a name down that I’d seen in whatever Marian Keyes book I was reading, and he’s teach me how to say it.
Better the kids have the Gaelic names and know the right pronunciation than having bogan parents call them “Siobhan” and then correct everyone to “No! It’s See-Oh-Barn”.
loading...
I have been a Siobhan for going on 30 years now and I can assure you that I’m in no way scarred from having to spell or pronounce my name for people – I’m well and truly used to it. If anything it’s become easier as people are generally more familiar with Gaelic names now than they were went I was in primary school. Speaking from personal experience I say go for it, but PLEASE don’t give your child a Gaelic name then spell it as it sounds. Variations on my name I’ve seen are Shivonne, Shivon, Chivon etc etc. It’s cheating
loading...
I think Siobhan is a very pretty name and l most definitely agree with your thoughts of variations on the spelling. Just out of interest does your name ever get shortened, and if so what to?
loading...
Cooper definitely does not work as a girl’s name. I’m shocked that some people have named their baby girls Cooper, I’m sure they’ll grow up to hate their name too!
loading...
lol! Cooper is an occupation of ye olde days: a maker or repairer of casks and barrels.
loading...
I think the tom-boy style names are quite cool – like Maxi/Frankie/Stevie/Billy but I don’t really get the full-on Boy names eg Daniel, Bruce etc..
I know it’s my own personality reflecting through when I’m really put off by the super girly names so I hope when it comes to it (if that ever happens) that I don’t too strongly let my views affect my naming by shying away from traditional girly/feminine names.
loading...
Every weekend, I scroll through the birth section of our local newspaper – for a laugh. Seriously, the ridiculous names that parents make up for their children beggars belief, and don’t get me started on the spelling of said name! Tahleeya? Emillee? Aliviah? Puh-leese. No wonder children can’t spell. It’s bogan people. Not original.
loading...
That used to be one of my favourite pastimes too! Especially when I used to live in Melbourne, the Herald Sun always had such winners.

I’ve heard some beauties in my midwife profession :
- Blue
-Star
-Sunny Joy
Tequila
Worldly
-DJ
Jimmy barnes
-A (as in the letter a of the alphabet)
_Snoopy
Florid
-Cutie
-Zeus
And thats only a few of the top of my head!!! Poor kids

Last week I overheard a midwife telling an expectant mother to please not call her unborn daughter Shyanne. ‘That’s a terrible name, please choose something different. Imagine if she’s quiet – kids will call her Shy Anne.’ Three cheers for the midwife for hopefully saving a child from a bad made up name!

I know of somebody, who after having two little boys, conceived a girl and named her Stevie. Surely you would be dying to use a cute, feminine name after already having been through the male naming process twice?
loading...
I’ve actually chosen Stevie for my ‘future incase it ever happens girl baby name’ it’s a pretty cool name..
Not all of us want cutesy/girly.. especially if that’s not our personality to begin with..
loading...
You obviously would be. But as it’s not your kid, what you think doesn’t really matter. And Stevie is cute. And feminine.
loading...
If that was me, I’d actually want a strong girl’s name rather than some cutesy name. Cute names work on little kids, but you’re only little for a short time, you’re an adult for a LOT longer.
loading...
Ahhhh Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame….one of the women to ever grace the rock stage. I wish I was one tenth as awesome as her
loading...
Also, what does this “Oh, we wanted a strong name, so we called our daughter Douglas” mean? Why does she need a male name to be “strong”?
A Jessica or an Emily can be strong.
Calling your beautiful newborn baby girl Matthew or Justin or Duncan doesn’t make them strong. It makes them a baby girl called Matthew or Justin or Duncan. That’s it.
loading...
I totally agree!!
I don’t understand the comments below from so many posts about wanting thier child’s name to be ‘STRONG’.
What makes a ‘strong’ name more important or a determining factor when choosing a name than say a ‘weak’ name?
What is an example of a ‘weak’ name?
I actually changed my name by choice when I was 22. According to my aunt, my name was too ‘strong’ and sounds harsh… What ever that means!

My daughter has a an old french boys name (they dont use it these days) : Maslin
We love it and when we discovered it we felt it was very feminine and would never have chosen it for a son. It is significant for us (as it references my maiden name in meaning) and we adore it but i hate that it sounds like we made it up. We have told our daughter why we chose it and what it means to
us and she loves it – for now – though she’s only 5 1/2 yo and this could all change as she grows up!
loading...
Errrr, in SA we have Maslin’s Beach …. the only nude beach in the state. It may be French but in SA you would raise a few eyebrows!
loading...
I am in SA too and that was the first thing I thought of!
loading...
We did the research before we named her and so we knew about Maslins beach…and thought it was great! our next family trip will be to SA so we can get our kit off in front of the sign!
loading...
I agree!!! Even birthday cards, most are girly….Very frustrating when 50% are boys!
loading...
I love the trend. All of the names listed are unisex, so I don’t think they count. I once met a girl named Michael, and it suited her so well. I do think it’s true that a girl has to be beautiful to carry of a very traditionally male name, but those who do seem so special and glamorous.
loading...
I don’t understand calling a girl Michael. Not when Michaela exists.
loading...
I’m a Michaela. Just have to say that it really makes me sad when I see other girls named Michaela and their parents have absolutely butchered the name. I think Mikayla is okay, but man I have seen some weird spellings out there. There was one on Today Tonight not too long ago.
I cannot stand “trendy” spellings of names.
loading...
I know of several little girls named Darcy.
loading...
I always thought Darcy was a girls name because of an old Molly Ringwald movie – the one where she falls pregnant and has a baby called Theodosia. Oh crap, what was the name of that movie???
loading...
That would be “For Keeps”
loading...
My friend’s first three daughters all have (originally) male names. There’s Renee, Darryl and Sonny. Then there’s Marley, although a popular girls name of recent years is drawn from Bob Marley. And lastly little Willow.
loading...
Ever heard of Daryl Hannah? definitely no beer gut there.
loading...
Despite knowing a handful of ‘Riley’s here that are all boys I saw recently that it’s a very popular girls name in the US and almost never used as a boys name there.
loading...
I like Riley for a girl. I wanted to name my daughter Baylee but hubby didn’t like it.
loading...
Probably because if you added an ‘f’ to the end you’d have a misspelled culinary herb. Or a Pokemon.
loading...
Shit, didn’t see that! Bay leaf. Funny. Oh, and I have no idea about Pokemon so I don’t know what you’re talking about there.
Remember the Oklahoma bombing in 1995? The fireman carrying that little girl from the fire? Her name was Baylee.
loading...
My daughter’s name is Riley. She is in her mid teens now
loading...
Does the name maketh the child or does the child maketh the name that is the question!
loading...
My niece is Dylan. Everyone comments that it’s a boys name and that it is unusual for a girl. They also usually do a double take to check that she is indeed a girl. She is.
loading...
My whole family have unisex names: Peta, Joe, Jordon (boy) and Sam (girl)!
loading...
My 9 year old son is Darby. I have heard of girls being called that too. It actually means “free man” and is of Irish origins.
loading...
My 5 month old son is Darby! I’d never heard of another one before but have heard of two this week.
loading...
isnt julia roberts character from steel magnolias called darby??????
loading...
Shelby
loading...
No it’s Shelby
loading...
She played Darby in the Pelican Brief.
loading...
My daughter is Asha, and would have been Asher if she’d been born a boy. It was really uncommon when she was born, but a few more are sprouting up here and there now. I know of a few Asha boys and a few Asha girls, but I like the Hebrew (Asher) spelling for a boy and the Sanskrit (Asha) for a girl. I just don’t get what the big deal is, it’s personal preference, if you like it great, but just remember your kid has to live with it!
loading...
This is our pick for a girl too, though we would have the hebrew spelling of Asher. I love it. It means happy and blessed.
loading...
My 9 year old son is Darby. Apparently there are girls called Darby too. Apparently it means “free man” and is of Irish origins.
loading...
Leave the boys names alone! It’s hard enough naming boys as it is.
Girls have all the clothes aisles and all the shoe aisles in stores, plus a zillion names to choose from, so hands off! Leave us boy parents with something!
loading...
I also hate the fact that a boy’s name used over a decade ago has now morphed into a girl’s name. I really don’t understand the trend of giving a girl a boy’s name. As Liza said, there are not enough boy’s names as it is. Quit nicking them!
loading...
I think it’s all about how you embrace the name. I mean sure Blake doesn’t sound like a promising girls name, but just look at Blake Lively! She is just as feminine and empowered as anyone else. She’s embraced the name and let it be what it was meant to be- a name- that doesn’t really mean all that much in the grand scheme of things.
When I see her I never think, gosh her name is blake wtf, because she doesn’t make it weird. I don’t know if I’m explaining myself well :/
loading...
Ziggy is top of my list for either a boy or a girl. Perhaps I may spell it Ziggi for a girl.
I honestly don’t really mind what people choose to call their children although I wouldn’t call my daughter James nor my son Sara. I think there is a line really.
loading...
My ex neighbour is a ziggy and is an hermaphrodite! Suits her so much. She is also the most thoughtful person ever!
loading...
Why do you need gender specific names?
loading...
Love this. My favourite names have always been those that are a little gender ambiguous. I think it gives people a bit more freedom. Those names will work with just about any personality. Often the really feminine or masculine names say a lot about what parents are hoping for eg. my mother wanted a little princess, so she gave me a an uber feminine name. My name is basically a reminder that I’m not what my mother hoped for. One of my friends kids is a boy with a very blokey name, but 2 years ago he decided he wants to be a she. Problem is his name clearly marks him out as a boy, so their going to have to go down the name change route much earlier than they would have otherwise.
loading...
To be perfectly honest you have to be REALLY pretty to pull of a man’s name as a grown woman. For example Drew Barrymore…she is gorgeous so we tend to forgive her crazy name. But if you have an unattractive woman named John it just won’t work. Its almost as tacky as naming your baby after American states…ie Dekota, Montana ect…What happened to beautiful feminine girls names like…Eve and Eloise? Surely they could be more creative and bring back some of the gorgeous girls names of the past!! Just tacky!!
loading...
I think Eloise is an ugly name.
loading...
We named our daughter Eloise and loved that the meaning wasn’t particularly girly. Books either gave the mening as ‘famous warrior’ or ‘intelligent’. Also, despite its tragic end, the story of Heloise and Abelard, interested us as she was obviously a strong determined woman, not some princess stuck in a castle. We also liked that it wasn’t common or particularly uncommon and as teachers we hadn’t taught any!!! And girly, you’re just rude.
loading...
I wasn’t intending to be rude, I was just expressing my opinion. I don’t like the name.
loading...
I hate the “I’m only being honest” line when someone has been rude.
loading...
So everyone here is allowed to say which names they dislike for their child, but when I pipe up and say I don’t like the name Eloise for a girl because I think it’s ugly, I am being rude?
I am sure Rebecca’s daughter is lovely and God speed to her if she loves the name, but I don’t. Why do you even care?
loading...
I don’t see anyone else saying other names are “ugly”. Your statement seems rather immature.
loading...
Since I can’t respond to Anon, I’ll reply here. I don’t see how it is immature. There are heaps of reasons why people don’t like names, and I happen to find that one ugly, I don’t like the way it sounds. Big deal.
It’s just a name, and people are allowed to have personal thoughts on names, that is why we are allowed to choose the name we like for our children. I am sure lots of people don’t like my name, but I really don’t care.
loading...
Since I don’t know your name I can’t comment, and yes, there are names I prefer over others but I guess it’s down to how you express your opinion, rather than the opinion itself.
loading...
Have you noticed that some of the old names are coming back? Lily Allen’s daughter Ethel, Robbie William’s Theodora, Julia Robert’s Hazel & Phinneaus. I also know babies named Beatrix, Mabel and Evelyn (usually called Evie). I love the old names! Mary wrote a post on here recently about how if you want you daughter to have an uncommon name, call her Mary because hardly any kids are given that name now – so true!
loading...
I think you have to be really pretty to pull off Harriet too….it reminds me of someone with a big old wrinkly face and big wart on their nose!
loading...
That’s funny you associate the name Harriet with that image. I’m called Harriet and I’m blonde haired with bright blue/green eyes. I associate the old woman type with a name like Beryl! But my boyfriends sister is called Beryl (i really hate that name) and she is so beautiful. I guess Harriet is an old fashioned name though, I’m not a huge fan of it myself.
loading...
I bet you’re gorgeous!
loading...
