Some lucky Mamamia readers have been trialling the L’Oréal Youth Code Luminosity.
According to L’Oréal:

Youth Code Luminosity is developed for women 25+ who are searching for skincare that will even and illuminate their skin whilst correcting dark spots and imperfections. The result is youthful looking skin that glows with radiance.

I noticed that my skin did seem smoother using the product, it gives the skin a lovely finish, a hint of shimmer. I don’t think it will be outing my rosehip oil, but it’s definitely an alternative.

I was lucky enough to get one of the trial bottles and I have found it great. We recently went to China and it stood up to all the smog and pollution (and long plane flights). It absorbs really well and is a great base for foundation. Super happy and will buy a bottle when this ones runs out!

I have been really happy with the serum, I think my skin may be slightly smoother and I love the texture and feel of the serum.

While using Luminosity I have not noticed any major difference to the texture of my skin, though it does feel a little smoother. And I have noticed that my skin is marginally brighter and that my skin is more glowing. Even though it did take some time, I have also noticed that some pigmenmentation is slowly starting to fade. I will definitely continue to use Luminosity.

An improvement in skin texture is probably the most noticeable difference I’ve experienced since trialling Luminosity. To be honest, it did take a few weeks to take effect, but the results have been maintained while I continue using the product. While some products help make your skin feel great, the main reason I’ll continue to use the Luminosity serum is because it helps my skin look great too. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to trial it.

I haven’t noticed any difference in my skin texture as yet. Will wait and see.

Thank you so much for letting me trial Luminosity. I have enjoyed the decadent feeling of putting something extra on my skin – usually it’s just a foaming cleanser and then a moisturiser. Nice to be able to pamper myself a little more without having to go too high maintenance.
After using Luminosity for the past few weeks I have noticed a smoother feel and fresher look. It makes a nice change! I’d use it again.

I’ve never used a serum before – but I’m loving it! I normally put it on before I have breakfast, so there’s plenty of time for my skin to enjoy it before I cover it with makeup. I’ve noticed my skin looks smoother and is now taking less concealer to cover my freckles and broken capillaries, so I suppose there must be a reduction in them. All in all I’m incredibly happy with Luminosity. I love that I feel a little indulgent when I put it on – it’s my treat to my skin for the day

I definitely noticed my skin has changed. Age spots have toned down and my skin feels smoother. Loving the product and will definitely continue using it.

I definitelysaw a visible improvement in the texture of my skin after using Luminosity. My skin felt smoother, taughter and stronger immediatley after using the product. It also gave my skin a healthy glow. The lasting effect is the reduction in dark spots and uneven pigmentation.

I’m so jealous that everyone is loving this serum. I bought some last week after reading good reviews and my skin reacted in a bumpy sore red rash. And I’ve never reacted to anything ever before. After tubes of cortisone cream and steroids prescribed by my doc its finally clearing up.
Can anyone recommend as alternative to clear up my uneven skin tone?

I have really sensitive and dehydrated skin and I use the Ultraceuticals Even skintone serum. There is an Even Skintone Sensitive for sensitive skin so you could try that. It is $85 and one bottle lasts me around 4 months (I use it every second day, rosehip oil on the other days – try this for skintone also if you haven’t already) so I find it to be reasonably affordable and so worth it for such a great product.

I know not everyone has great results with it, but I LOVE Clinique’s Even Better Dark Spot Corrector. I have ultra sensitive skin, so I use it once a day, and it works super-dooper for me. Has taken away some horrible hormone splotches….
loading...
The same thing happened to me–a rash all over my face 2 days later and I’ve never had an allergic reaction before; what the heck is in this stuff? The rash isn’t going away… what should I do?????

I started using this product 2 weeks ago after using a Chanel serum for a while. I think that the Youth Code serum is a fabulous product. Not only is the price point wonderful, it also has a lovely smell, feel and does the job it says it will.
I use it under my Rosehip oil and a Payot Moisturiser. I have dry, freckly and pigmented skin, and whilst it is clear from pimples, getting even skin tone has been a big problem for me. After only two weeks, I can see a dramatic difference. My freckles are starting to fade, I haven’t had any hormonal pimples and some slight acne scarring is starting to fade.
Considering the price compared to other serums on the market, I will continue to use this one! It also gives you a very slight shimmer! It’s lovely!

I started using this a couple of weeks ago so haven’t been using it long enough to say if it works or not. I purchased the serum and the matching day cream. I have fair skin with a lot of freckles and can be prone to blackheads and breakouts on my chin .
I started off using them both twice a day but found my face was to shiny/greasy looking during the day so have reduced using the serum at night only. This is the first time I’ve tried a serum so will be interested to see how it goes. The day cream is a really nice moisturiser and is absorbed by the skin well.

I’m more than willing to invest in skin care and could probably pay a weeks rent with my current eye cream alone, so expectations on the results of Luminosity were not particularly high. I won’t be broadcasting this to my husband, but I actually found this to be a relatively comparable product. I’ve been testing it in place of my serum and under moisturizer and find it super light and overall works as a nice brightener.

I do tend to have dark sunspots… a downside of being born and bred in Queensland! Over the last few weeks of using L’Oreal Youth Code Luminosity I have noticed a definite fading of dark spots and more refined, even skin tone overall. I’ve even started going without foundation/tinted moisturiser sometimes which I haven’t been confident enough to do for a long time.
loading...
I have pigmentation issues for a long time. I have noticed after a month of using this serum my dark spots have faded
loading...
I have increasing pigmentation, and a couple of large dark spots too, as well as some scarring from past acne has turned darker.
The product is making my skin look brighter, but im yet to see any major difference in the look of the pigmentation – but as nothing happens overnight, im still hopefull that I will see more results in the weeks to come.

I have a few dark spots around my sunglasses line – too much sun!!
I don’t know yet if the product is evening these out, but I feel that my skin has a lovely glow to it and that makes me notice them less if that makes sense?
loading...
This is the first time I have used a serum and I am now hooked!
I do have some minor dark spots but it doesn’t concern me greatly as it is not very noticable unless someone was too look very closely.
loading...
I have a lot of dark spots and scars from age, cold sores, acne etc. Everyone has noticed that my skin is looking clearer and more even.
loading...
I don’t have any dark spots that I know of, but I do have a spot now and then..I don’t think luminosity has been effective in addressing the spot issue. Overall the product has been nice to use
loading...
I can credit Luminosity with the overall brightness/radiance of my skin, and it doesn’t yet seem to have made much of an impact on the pigmentation (post pregnancy) marks, although everything looks a little brighter. Another few weeks and I should be able to tell if this product is just an overall brightening or whether it is having a targeted impact on the pigmentation
loading...
I have dark circles under my eyes, though nothing too bothersome. They are genetic, rather than age-related. I cover them with concealer, generally and haven’t noticed a difference since I’ve been using Luminosity.
loading...
I have acne and ‘age spots’ rather than imperfections/dark spots on my skin and have not noticed a difference with them since using the serum.
loading...
Currently I am using both as both L’Oreal products and finding my skin to be more supple than normal.
loading...
I usually use Napoleon’s Auto Pilot (or Face of Australia, if I can find it) primer as my moisturiser/primer combo, and that’s really the only moisturising product I use! I probably won’t go out and get another serum after using L’Oréal Youth Code Luminosity – it’s just made my skin too oily, and I’m not keen on spending a lot to find another when my primer does the trick.
I also have no dark spots that I want to cover up – the only imperfections I’d like to remove/cover on my face is some small broken capillaries on my cheeks from intense rosacea in my younger years, and fine lines around my eyes… So this serum probably isn’t the right pick for me, anyway!
loading...
I have good, healthy skin with no noticeable dark spots on my face…wait, do freckles and ‘beauty spots’ count? Leading up to my period I can get the occasional, annoying zit, but the rest of the time it’s good. The serum seems to light up my face a bit and give it a bit of a glow.
On my arms I have noticed a few pigmented spots, which I kind of need to just get over.
loading...
I relaly liked using the Luminosity serum, it felt great on and I felt it visually improved the look and texture of my skin. I don’t ususally use a serum but I like this product so much I might from now on. I have freckles, sun spots and dark pigmentation due to my fragile and delicate Celtic skin not being made for the harsh Australian sun. I’ve just turned 40 so it might be time to up the ante on the skin care!
loading...
I started noticing some dark spots a few years ago, but they really came out strong when I was pregnant. They went away a tiny bit once my little one was born but not totally. I find that using the Youth Code Luminosity serum has helped.
loading...
I’ve been using moisturiser for so long I find it strange not to even if I use a serum under it. I find my skin feels a bit dry.
loading...
I use a serum and moisturiser in winter and just a serum in summer. I have been using a moisturiser with the Luminosity serum for added benefits
loading...
I don’t usually use anything bar from cleaning my face from sunscreen, makeup remover and then some rose hip oil. This is a big step up for me and people have noticed something fresh about my face.
loading...
Although I have combination skin that tends to break out, I always use a moisturiser on top of the serum – using the serum on its own is just not enough for my skin, especially not as we head towards winter with spending more time indoors in front of the heater. Also I have heard countless times at the cosmetic counters that a moisturiser is needed on top of the serum, to ‘seal in the goodness of the serum’…..not sure if this is true, or just an attempt to sell more products…………… However regardless, my skin needs it, so im doing it.
loading...
I generally do use a moisturiser and a serum

This is my first time to use a serum as well as a moisturiser.

L’Oreal has one of the worst, most notoriously cruel animal testing records, if any of you are interested.
loading...
I didn’t know that and yes, I am interested. Thanks for posting.
loading...
You’re very welcome. Sorry for slightly snarky tone- still stinging from the DIY hair colour thread, in which I basically got told to bugger off for trying to raise awareness. Your response reminds me that some people do actually care. Thank you.
Also, when researching animal tested companies, be aware of subsidiaries and parent companies. A subsidiary can sneakily claim they don’t test even if the parent company does. As with The Body Shop (now owned by L’Oreal). Companies can also claim their products aren’t tested even if the *ingredients* were. Very, very dodgy.
loading...
I’m trying to post links but they won’t show. Anyway, you can google “Choose Cruelty Free” and “companies which do test on animals and subsidiaries” for more info.
loading...
Thanks DTH, seems crazy that any company would still do this. I certainly won’t be buying l’oreal again.
loading...
Thanks for posting this information, I agree it’s incredibly important and often not considered in the media when decision-making re. purchasing a product is discussed… Mamamia can we have more info on this? I love this site; body image, photoshopping awareness, celebrities.. all important… what about ethical cosmetic products? Why aren’t you writing about it?
loading...
Thank you, I agree so much. There are serums you can get from Planet Eve Organics and Be Genki. They are great.
loading...
Just FYI. The Body Shop (now owned by L’Oreal) does not do any product testing on animals. Loreal has not performed such a practice since the 80′s! You really should get your misinformed facts right before you state such things on a public forum.
loading...
From L’Oreal’s own sustainability report:
‘L’Oréal has not used animals to test its finished products since 1989, except in the case where national legislation requires it. This is the case in certain countries where L’Oréal operates and in those locations regulations require testing using animals before substances can be registered for commercial use. As L’Oréal operates on an international scale, it is obliged to comply with the current national legislation for products that are manufactured locally and sold locally.’
loading...
The message, cloaked in faux-ethical spin, is that they do indeed still test. I can’t post links, but a simple google search will provide you with quite a few sources.
loading...
And I am very aware The Body Shop themselves don’t test. They broadcast this and trade off their image of an “ethical” company. What they don’t share quite so openly is that their sales profit L’Oreal. So by buying TBS, you are giving money to L’Oreal. An ethical subsidiary profiting an unethical parent company is still part of an unethical cycle, whether its employees want to admit it or not.

Thank-you for your comments on L’Oreal and its animal testing policy, this gives us the opportunity to comment further on this important topic. L’Oreal is totally committed to animal-free beauty. Our laboratories have contributed to most of the replacement methods accepted today by regulators– including percutaneous penetration, phototoxicity and the test for skin irritation on Episkin validated by the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM), which have become international standards. More alternative methods – to test for eye irritation and for allergic reaction – are currently being validated and it’s thanks to these advances that we were able to end animal testing for all our finished products and for ingredients for these respective endpoints

I typically use an anti-ageing serum or rose hip oil as well as my moisturiser. However I haven’t been bothering since starting to use Luminosity as it seems to address both skin appearance and moisture levels
loading...
I’ve been using serum as well a moisturiser for the past year — I tend to invest a little more on serums and just use a cheaper moisturiser just for the purpose of moisturising (as opposed to promising anti-ageing etc etc etc)
loading...
I like the texture of it – it goes on very nicely and doesn’t feel too heavy. Unfortunately the onset of winter weather in Sydney has played havoc with my skin so it’s a little hard to judge the effect of Luminosity at the moment.
I never used to bother with a serum under my moisturiser before but I do quite like Luminosity so far!
loading...
Previously I was just using a moisturiser and at the moment I am just using the serum. I think it is fine on its own for my skin however I should probably still be using my moisturiser because it has a sunscreen in it.
loading...
I use it underneath my tinted moisturiser during the day and alone at night. It works beautifully either way, and my skin is definitely feeling smoother and clearer as a result!
loading...
In a former life I just used a moisturiser without a serum and this used to do the trick. I’ve found that I now just use rosehip night and day and this is more than enough and replaces a multitude of moisturisers.
In context to this product, I would think about placing it over the top of my rosehip after allowing a decent amount of time for the rosehip to work it’s magic and sink in.
loading...
Still liking this product a lot. I’ve never used a serum before but I think I might add it to my skin care routine once I run out of Youth Code.
loading...
I have been using it plus my tinted moisturiser in the mornings but just by itself at night, I love it. My skin feels lighter, clears up faster & the cream smells delicious. I will by buying it once the trial one finishes.
loading...
I have been using this product as part of the trial for a few weeks now – and I am loving it! I have sensitive skin, but I have loved this product. I have had many comments that I am glowing! It feels lovely on, absorbs quickly and feels light and moisturising as well. I have been using it in place of my regular moisturiser in the mornings, and my regular night cream at night.
loading...
I would love to try this product!!
loading...
I had to stop using the product after my first week, because my skin can be quite sensitive and I found that it made it sting a little. It does apply nicely though
loading...
After using the product for a couple of weeks I I don’t think it’s significantly enhanced my skin tone too much and given off the point of illumination. Its probably something that needs to happen over a couple of weeks. I am pale though so I don’t know if it’s going to make a massive difference in the big scheme of things
It is a lovely product thought to put on and gives a nice shimmer to begin with. I’m going to keep going over the next couple of weeks and see how it goes.
loading...
I have been making an effort to look after my skin over the last couple of months, so it was in pretty good condition when I started using the L’Oreal Youth Code Luminosity Serum a couple of weeks ago. For some reason I was expecting it to be an oil based serum, but it’s not. It is very light, you don’t need to use a lot of it and it absorbs quickly. I’ve been using it for 2 weeks now and my skin tone is more even and I have noticed a lightening of dark age spots. It doesn’t replace any products that I already have. Rather, I see its place as an add-on to my skin care regime to correct age spots and imperfections. In that respect I have just started to notice a real difference so I can only assume that effect will continue with time. I definitely think it’s worth adding to your skincare routine.
