The tragic story behind the woman buried alive in Honduras.

You’ve probably seen the story everywhere today.

Earlier this week, a 16-year-old girl named Neysis Perez was accidentally buried alive.

Doctors declared Perez dead after she collapsed at home. She was three months pregnant at the time.

However, the day after her funeral, her husband Rudy Gonzales visited her grave and heard banging and screaming.

Gonzales told local TV station Primer Impacto:

I was heartbroken because my sweetheart had been taken so suddenly from me. I wanted to be near to her. As I put my hand on her grave I could hear noises inside. I heard banging, then I heard her voice. She was screaming for help. It had already been a day since we buried her. I couldn’t believe it. I was ecstatic, full of hope.

Perez’s family desperately tried to break into her coffin, but it was too late – she couldn’t be revived

Perez is believed to have finally died from suffocation, and relatives described finding cuts and bruises on her forehead and fingers from her efforts to free herself.

And it’s not hard to understand why it has captured the world’s attention – being buried alive really is the stuff of nightmares, after all.

But while news reports have focused on the horror-story element, it’s important to remember that a young girl and her child have lost their lives.

And that’s tragic.

So today, we’re thinking of Neysis Perez’s family – because they lost their loved one and her unborn child far too early.

And because they lost her not once, but twice.
