With the world due to end tomorrow according to the Mayan calendar, it’s good to see that Australia has a leader who stands ready to guide us through these turbulent times.
That’s right… it seems that the Mayans were actually right. Prime Minister Julia Gillard has confirmed in an exclusive press conference for Triple J’s Tom and Alex that Australians should expect a flesh eating zombie apocalypse before the end of the month.
Better get out the Y2K baked beans stash…

I just find this completely embarassing. As if JG isn’t already a laughing stock.

Well… Abbott and Bishop have done well at making a joke of themselves in the past few months haven’t they? It seems they have been spending their time trying to make Labor look bad and then trying to clean up their image when they completely stuff it up, over and over again. At least here, the joke is meant to be a joke

I seriously just had to explain to people in my office, that this was a joke she was playing along with. They were upset that she (the Prime Minister) was saying things like this, because to quote them, “even the son of god doesn’t know when the world will end”. She shouldn’t say these things….blah blah…
Well God help me (pun very much intended), I have to work with these people!! They make me crazy. How could you not understand she was having a little fun? Good on her for having a sense of humour (especially given how crap things have been for her lately).

MM – How about for the OMM/Share type posts we can do a fun one for what will you be doing or what would you do on the 20/12/2012?
loading...
Ooh, I second that idea!
loading...
Just makes me like her more – good on you PM! Glad someone in politics has a healthy sense of humour and knows how to connect with those in our community who haven’t become resigned and cynical about life, thinking everything has to be so bloody serious all the time! Love it.
loading...
I thought it was the 21st December?
loading...
Great larrikin humour! Keep up the great work PM
loading...
Surely there are more important things a PM could be doing? This is absolutely disgraceful.
Hurry up election time!!!
loading...
and I’m sure she’s been doing them. This isn’t disgraceful. Please calm down.

AJ, on ABC radio the other day karl kruszelnicki related a story about him hopping in a cab & the driver bursting into tears and asking if the world really was going to end, he was worried his wife and small son were going to die. This is a very real fear for some people and I think the PM has actually done some good in addressing it in some way.
loading...
I suppose it is an easy excuse for people who don’t agree with her to have a cheap shot…. beauty of it is, she had the first shot on all of you! Nice one Julia! I thought it was an Australian tradition to take the p*ss but obviously there are people out there that are a bit too stuck up. I personally think she is doing a great job and I still try to work out how Tony Abbott managed to get the top job with the liberals. Heard on the news that unemployment was down again yesterday… good job
loading...
Would we be judging President Obama as much if he did it?
Or would it just add to his already “cool” factor.
loading...
Can you imagine if the world actually did end, and she had to give that speech for real, only no one believed her this time? LOL
loading...
Not that it matters, but isnt it meant to be 21/12/12, not 07/12/12?
loading...
Triple J made the date 7/12 to tie in with it being the last day on air for 2012 for the hosts of the morning show. They are holding an ‘end of the world’ party tomorrow morning.
loading...
Actually Dr. Karl said that apparently the Maths was done wrong and if done correctly the end of the world is supposed to end on the 7 December, not the 21 December.
loading...
The Dr Karl took into account the calendar changed from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in 1582.. the Julian wasn’t calculated properly, so there was 11 minutes per year unaccounted for, meaning every 400 years, 3 days went missing! So they introduced a new system, that accounts for this.. By the time of the change 10 days had already been lost…
(BTW.. didn’t know this.. wikipedia is my friend!!)
loading...
This made me so happy when I heard it on the way to work this morning. She’s great.
loading...
Gosh, where have I been? I have been too busy living life to even realize the world was supposed to end tomorrow (I do vaguely recall hearing something about it a while ago but then forgot about it- possibly because we’ve heard it all before and we’re still here). I have seen some whacko show on Foxtel called “Doomsday Preppers” or something where they spend their whole life preparing for some cataclysmic event, but it seems a bit sad to me! What will be will be……good on Julia for having a sense of humour!
loading...
I no longer believe anything the PM says…
Good news in this instance
loading...
I love that our Prime Minister has a sense of humour.
Onya Jules!
loading...
*yawn* how about lets get back to the real issues? Cost of electricity?!
when is it election time please?
loading...
Many of the below comments suprise me!
The video was put topgether to tie in with the Triple J morning show “end of the world” party tomorrow morning as it is the last day on air for Tom and Alex for the year. It is just intended to be light hearted and a bit of fun.
Anyone taking “the end of the world” more seriously than that really must have some issues. And when it comes to children being upset – perhaps start by not allowing them to listen to Triple J.
Yes, there are problems in the world and Australia but cant we all take a small time out every once in a while? Everyone should just relax a little bit.
loading...
Relax man, gee cant the woman have a bit of fun? Gawd I would hate her job and this is just a bit of old fashioned fun.
loading...
Electricity is a state issue.
loading...
Anyone surprised by this has obviously never listened to the House of Representatives Question Time!
loading...
This is satire made for a COMEDY show and thank goodness she has enough of a sense of humour to “get it” and is in touch with that particular audience.
She’s taking the mickey out of all of those morons who believe this “end of the world” stuff and who try to “share the fear”.
On a more serious note – there are children out there who are quite terrified and are crying them selves to sleep over it……….this is because they’re hearing adults (and some of those people they trust) discussing this crap.
There are people who’ve given up on their life plans, are spending their life savings including their children’s education funds and some are distressing themselves to the point of suicide.
This is what happened in America not so long ago when that old, fanatical cult-leader predicted a date and when it didn’t happen he just predicted another one !
ALL of those cretins who predict “end of the world” scenarios are enjoying your pain and are “getting off” on trying to sabotage your happy future.
This is yet another sick fantasy that will bite the dust.
The main thing that bothers me is that for 24hrs some people in our world will waste production, creativity, and happiness stressing over this……
And the children………..don’t forget the children……..they might hear you.

Certainly a more convincing speech than any others that she has delivered.
Certainly had me worried, but I’d be willing to suggest that anything that she says will be worrying far more Labor backbenchers and more than a couple of ministers.
Love the deadpan delivery of the obvious off the cuff speech.
loading...
And here I was thinking the Carbon Pricing WAS the end!
Thanks for clearing that up JG!
loading...
Great to see she has a sense of humour about other topics than just Tony Abbott.
loading...
Awesome. Lighten up Miss Tash, bit of fun.
Personally I’ve been watching the best show on TV aka The Walking Dead and am fully prepared for the zompocalypse. Avoid major population centres, destroy the brain and stay hydrated.
loading...
Looove The Walking Dead, I am totally prepared. Just gotta get a samurai sword from somewhere. ha ha.
loading...
As long as Darryl is on my side, then I’ll be sweet.
loading...
Yes! Team Daryl, Team Prison baby! I asked hubby to start walking round in a poncho with a crossbow. I think he’s relieved my Edward Cullen obsession is coming to an end.
loading...
Call me the fun police – but I think this was a really irresponsible and stupid thing to do. While it is pretty obvious that this is a joke and not at all intended to be taken seriously, there is a real sense of fear out there surrounding the impending supposed apocalypse. Some people ARE taking this seriously (my sister’s boss has built a cabin out in the middle of nowhere all stocked up with supplies – he’s about to go ‘off the grid’) and I think this will only help to feed the terror and the hype. There have been a few cases of suicide reported so far in relation to the 2012 apocalypse – I would hate to see something which was meant to be light hearted and humourous cause more distress to people. Good on the PM for supporting the boys at JJJ and having a bit of a laugh (god knows it’s refreshing to see the lighter side of our politicians!) – but I think she got this one a bit wrong.
loading...
You old nanna! I thought it was great to see her do something fun and unexpected.
Everyone needs to lighten up. Why should she only do the boring stuff? Showing a human side able to join in on the joke is great. I love it.
loading...
Ha! Yes I’ll take that – I am a nanna on this one…
I am not saying that our PM should not be able to have a little bit of fun and I think it’s great she agreed to be a part of the comedy sketch – it does show her ‘human side’ and I think there should be more of it in politics!
Just thought the subject matter was a little left of centre – while the majority of the world is not at all concerned with the predictions there are some out there (and as Caz Gibson pointed out above) many young children who are are frightened and are not sure what to believe!
I didn’t say it wasn’t amusing, just thought she might have missed the mark. Oh dear, yes I really think I am a nanna!!
loading...
The world ending because of the Mayans is actually a safe topic to poke fun at. It isn’t at anyone expense and unless it actually happens (which it won’t) – it won’t come back and bite her on the bum later! (Unlike Downers fishnet pics!)
loading...
There are always going to be those people and they will do all the crazy stuff no matter who says what. NASA have a whole page on their site explaining why the world isn’t going to end and I’ve seen people explain that away as government consipiricy covering up the truth.
I thought this was great, a fun lighthearted few moments at the end of a long stodgy year of politics.
loading...
For a minute there I thought you were going to say “a fun lighthearted few moments at the end of the world”
loading...
I agree with you 100%.
There are so many people worrying about the end of the world that NASA had to put out a press release, and with the way the news is reporting this ‘joke video’ the headline is enough to make people anxious.
loading...
julia gillard should be more interested in fixing all the things that need fixing in australia, instead of mucking around!
loading...
Lighten up
loading...
Oh give her a break. She gets flack when she is too wooden, she gets flack when she has a bit of fun.
Geez, who’d want to do that job? You’re on a hiding to nothing.
loading...
Oh lighten up! It’s ok for Bob Hawke to hold a world record for beer skulling but not for JG to poke fun? It’s clearly a joke and would have taken oh…5 minutes out of her schedule…. Politics needs a little more light and less shade!
loading...
But….Bob won the title when he was still a student and well before he entered parliament. Then he gave up the grog.
loading...
He still had a sense of humour, even when he was Prime Minister.
loading...
remember, “any boss who sacks a worker for not turning up today is a bum!”. Classic
loading...
Nicely said KatieG.
PM takes maybe an hour to record this and it’s ‘frivolous’ and irresponsible. Abbott takes 2 days (after spending how many hours at taxpayers expense to get the appropriate licence) to drive an empty truck down the pacific hwy and it’s all boys-own good fun. (not hard to see why he’s lost the women’s and youth vote, while Gillard’s rapidly picking up the majority of both)
Nothing but double standards for our first woman PM, and I love the way she just keeps on and rises above it. Go Julia, you’re my Prime Minister.
loading...
Many in the transport industry are having a bit of a laugh at Tony Abbott taking two days to do that trip which is about 9 hours long. It is interesting that is has not chosen to go as far as the Sydney Markets (that takes real skill). I also hope he is carrying an up to date log book and is filling it in properly.
I have no issue with him getting the appropriate licence, which he needed for driving a water tanker. It is refreshing to see that he belongs to his local volunteer fire brigade. (I emphasize that I am NOT a Liberal voter and not a Tony Abbott fan). The Pacific Highway is a bush track and is not fit for the amount of traffic that passes over it, south of Brisbane, whether Mr Abbott’s trip will make a difference to that remains to be seen, I guess.
loading...
You do realise that to belong to the volunteer fire brigade you just need to turn up to a fewe meetings after signing up?
loading...
70/30 – 70% of people have a sense of humour and 30% of people need to drink a glass of LIGHTEN UP!!!
loading...
Well, she did also announce today that she has come up with a landmark deal with the NSW Government to fund the NDIS. Does that count as fixing things?
loading...
I like seeing her have a joke. She has a pretty serious full on job to do, which I’m sure at times probably doesn’t lend itself to a joke, even behind closed doors. It’s nice to see her relax a little and even have a giggle at herself.
loading...
You like to see her having a joke ?
Was that meant to be funny ? She has no future on the stand-up circuit, that’s for sure and for certain.
loading...
neither do you. but at least she’s got a sense of humour.
loading...
Now that is funny !
loading...
Oh I love it! Good on JG for joining in. However isn’t the world meant to end on the 21st of December not the 7th?
loading...
not when you take into account that the earth takes 365.2468 days to revolve around the sun and the fact that we lost 12 days when we changed from the Julian calendar to the current, Gregorian calendar
loading...
Damn! Well I guess I shouldn’t have bought that ticket to the Christmas party on Saturday.
loading...
*tears up Saturday’s Lotto ticket*
loading...
Thank Christ someone corrected that !
I have spent a lot of money for an event occuring on the 8th and it’s non-refundable !
Just checking….everything after the 21st is free.
loading...
what a great political stunt. love it. shows she is more than human and has humour ..
loading...
Gotta love the fact that we have a Prime Minister with a sense of humour!
loading...
“at least this means I won’t have to do Q&A again” LOL
that was actually pretty funny.
loading...
Gotta give it to her – she has a sense of humour! Can’t imagine many other leaders who would be willing to do that
loading...
A ridiculous thing for the leader of our nation to be doing. She is just trying to be hip to the jive of the youngens.
loading...
Ms Gillard is just trying to be the new KRudd !
loading...
Lighten up !!
loading...
Hopefully she’s ‘hip’ enough not to use words like ‘jive’…
loading...
Classic!
loading...
She is a good sport!
