I was recently interviewed for a story in the Brisbane News about body image and here is part of what I said ……
“In gossip magazines, the only roles available to celebrities are negative ones about their bodies. They hate themselves because they’re too fat or ‘worryingly thin’. The only women allowed to love their bodies are those who have lost vast amounts of weight after having a baby,” says Mia, who writes a blog mamamia.com.au. “That inevitably rubs off on the rest of us who are taught to focus on our bodies. What about our brains? What about our achievements at work and as mothers?”

I really like what both Kylie Turner and the other woman have to say in this article.
I have never officially been on a 'diet' and don't agree with them at all.
In my 20's (particularly after a breakup) i was known to go on the 'ciggies and cuppa' diet but that wasnt about losing weight it was more i was too depressed to give a shit to cook or eat (luckily there were only 3 break ups that decade and i usually got hungry after a few days/to a week)
I hate the way diets and fads make woman so obsessed about our bodies as a sign of how much we are worth as human beings. When i was younger i rebelled against diets or being obsessed about my looks in an angry way, something about not wanting to 'conform' to the norm. Now that i am older I think i feel the same way as Kylie Turner
"what other people think of me is none of my business"
but probably would add a little bit of my own twist "what other people think of me - DOESNT MATTER" in terms of whether I come 'up to scratch' on the physcial scale. As long as
1) I am comfortable
2) my partner still digs me
i dont really care.
I do care (to a degree) about what people think of what i have to say, my ideas and what i contribute to the world.
But, back to eating/dieting...I let myself eat whatever i want, i just use the french women's trick of having a little bit of everything. I have never weighed food, obsessed about kilojules/read packets before deciding if i can eat it, and as often as possible encourage other women when we are out to relax and treat themselves to whatever they want.
Life is too short ladies, be happy NOW
'dry July', crikey...last time I had a 'dry July' I think I was in 8th Grade....
