Todd Akin believes rape victims can control whether they fall pregnant
There are some ideas, some public statements that are so preposterous as to almost defy belief.
Like the idea that rape victims can’t get pregnant.
Along with many of his fellow Republicans, Senatorial candidate Todd Akin doesn’t support abortion. He is vehemently opposed to it under all circumstances. Even in cases of incest. Even in cases of rape.
Akin has explained that women who are the victims of ‘legitimate’ rape are not likely to get pregnant. There are so many appalling things wrong with that sentence that it’s hard to know where to begin.
During a television interview this week, Akin (self described as ‘Missouri’s most conservative congressman) was asked if there were any limits to his firm stance against abortion. Like, for example, if a woman had been raped? Would that entitle her to the option of a safe and legal abortion? Here is exactly what he said:
“First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.
But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. You know I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”
So, no. Akin does not believe a rape victim should have access to abortion.
Here he is in vivid technicolour making his bizarre pronouncement:
It’s kind of hard to know where to begin with these comments. But let’s give it a go.
Firstly, when the hell is rape ever ‘legitimate’. Rape is rape. It means you’ve been forced into having sex against your will. How can that ever be legitimate?
Secondly, where are all the doctors’ who are out there saying that women can physically control pregnancy? Oh that’s right, there are none.
And thirdly? Gah.
Within hours of being interviewed, Congressman Akin was forced to back away from his comments. Not (we suspect) because he no longer believes them but purely as a means of self-preservation. The public outcry over his offensive, insensitive and just plain weird remarks was along these lines:

Akin responded to the uproar yesterday in an email to the media, trying to explain that he actually just ‘misspoke’ in his interview. Yet he still offered no explanation as to what he DID actually mean:
“In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year,” Akin wrote. “Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.”
“I recognize [sic] that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue,” Akin continued. “But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action. I also recognize that there are those who, like my opponent, support abortion and I understand I may not have their support in this election.”
In this day and age it’s hard to believe there are really people out there who think like this. But there are. And they’re running for the US Senate.

This just unbelievable how could someone so ignorant even be able to run for government. What I think is even more frightening is that people support this man.
I really feel for victims of rape who have had to heard this statement. It is absolutely insensitive and completely downplays the severity and emotional impact of rape.
I am glad I don’t live in America

Thanks for responding quickly Mia. I agree, spooky indeed. I was online logging onto the story and the next minute it was gone. Overall, Julian’s case is probably the most interesting phenomenon at the moment, and I was looking forward to reading everybody’s comments. I hope you can retrieve it and/or replace it. Would also be very interested to hear from you/your tech people how exactly this happened, if it is possible for them to establish an exact cause. Have some very very tech savvy sons. Will enquire of them what the possibilities are technically. Very interested to know.

It’s ridiculousness like this that makes me glad I no longer live in the US. Why is it always male politicians who get on their soapboxes about abortion and pregnancy? Because they’re not the ones physically going through it, that’s why. Grrrr.

This is exactly why I don’t believe a man, no matter what his political, financial or social status is, should ever, under any circumstances, be permitted to make decisions concerning women. “Womens business” (as our own indigenous women call it) is exactly that. Oh the strange peculiarities of the human psyche …

Mandy – google “wikipedia Babel fish” – a babel fish is a universal translator which simultaneously translates from one spoken language to another. (A small yellow leech like fish that you stick in your ear.)
Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could evolve purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God. The argument goes something like this:
“I refuse to prove that I exist,” says God, “for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing”.
“But,” says man, “the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn’t it? It proves you exist and so therefore you don’t. QED.”
“Oh dear,” says God, “I hadn’t thought of that,” and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
“Oh, that was easy,” says man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white, and gets killed on the next zebra crossing.

I love that larrikin-style disrespect for authority Australian display when confronted with this type of “stupid”.
This moron would be deafened with calls of “Come off it mate!” from a crowd of Aussies, most of whom have fantastic “bullshit metres” – a national virtue.
When travelling I must admit feeling somewhat comforted by the presence of a group of Aussies.
Once, when travelling on a plane not long after 9/11, I found myself talking to a hostess……..I asked “Do you still feel safe when flying ?” she replied ” Of course, but most definitely in a plane full of Australians”……she continued “They just give the impression that they can handle stuff without a fuss and that they won’t put up with crap”
I welcome the diversity of people in our country and perhaps this character trait is one to be encouraged in all of us.

This reminds me of Whoopi Goldberg’s “it wasn’t rape-rape” comment about Roman Polanski. *shivers*

she also said dog fighting was part of African American culture when a US footballer got done for running a dog fighting …ring? (is that the word)

Do you know what? I am so relieved to be an Australian when I read things like this. The extreme religious right scare the living F**K out of me in America and I cannot even fathom it. Australia is such a wonderful country compared to America, in every possible way.
All the Tony Abbott bashing left support on the site aside, in our religious leader arena – catholic Tony Abbott is smart and educated enough to never ever speak or even think in such a stupid, low brow and unintelligent way. Sure there are some crazy religious righties on the edges of politics in Australia, but none of them get taken seriously in the media the way the idiotic religious right wing do in America.
We might have a few doozies in our parliament, but the Australian public, in this day and age, would tear to shreds anyone who ran for public office who dare speak an opinion like Akin has expressed.
loading...
So would the majority of Americans. What you’re reading is from someone who is clearly from the bible belt of America – their extreme views are no less intense than a fundamental Muslim.
I just hate how Australians paint the majority of Americans with the same brush. The majority of them are fantastic people who would find these comments absolutely outrageous. This guy is a lunatic, it’s just a shame that he has the platform to make his views public.
loading...
That’s not the case – extreme right wing politics is far more acceptable in America than here. I doubt even the LNP would give someone like him oxygen by putting him forward as a candidate. Bob Katter’s party might, but Bob Katter’s party is not one of the two major parties – Akin’s party is.
The major difference, in my opinion – 75-80% of Americans identify as “Christians” (these figures I get from news sites, so I concede, not the most reliable) whereas in Australia it is something like 60% with a far more diverse mix of religion and higher percentages identifying as atheist. It’s the massive religious based conservativism over there that breeds these nutcases.
loading...
Yeah, in my experience they’re definitely more conservative than Aussies. I’m always floored when discussing stuff with American friends and acquaintances how you think they’re quite progressive, then they’ll come out with something so outrageous to Aussies. Their left and right are pretty different to ours. And they are more actively religious too.
loading...
and dont forget MONEY!! relgion and politics is big business.
loading...
Agreed K, I was over in America earlier this year at a political conference with about 60 other women – mostly locals – and those women were totally on top of their game and progressive. Most moderate Republican women are mortified by the Tea Party.
loading...
Many Americans are wonderful moderate people. But you are in denial if you don’t accept there is a vast group of conservative loonies in America. If the ‘majority’ are perfectly reasonably how is Fox News so popular?
loading...
I dunno, Tony Abbott’s ‘my daughters don’t need the cervical cancer vaccine because they won’t have sex before marriage thing’ was pretty good.
loading...
Tony Abbott is a Rhodes Scholar. A high educated man who would understand that there is no medical or scientific way, shape or form, what Akin said is possible. His comments about his daughters and the cervical cancer vaccine are a bit ignorant, but I’m sure there are plenty of fathers out there who don’t think their daughters will ever “do it” until marriage either. Ill thought out comment, but not one that ignores science and professes something that is completely medically and scientificaly impossible.
He’s also come out and said that he believes abortion should be safe, legal and rare – this bloke is just totally against them all together.
loading...
Wow, what a breath of fresh air you are, Anonymous! well said and I heartily agree!
loading...
Just to clarify, my comment was not meant to question Abbott’s scientific/medical knowledge regarding conception and/or sex. I was simply drawing a parallel between the idea of ‘legitimate rape’ and his comment that likened cervical cancer with virginity and morality. Are women who get cervical cancer sluts, just like rape victims who fall pregnant weren’t ‘legitimately raped’?
loading...
No – but there is a glut of scientific evidence which shows that the chances of developing cervical cancer if you have not had the S word (sorry on my work computer here) are miminal. I’m not a scientist so I don’t know the explanation, but the cervical cancer vaccine is for the HPV disease which you contract by having S. It’s not a once and for all vaccine against all forms of cervical cancer. It’s a vaccine that protects against HPV which apparently causes MOST cervical cancer.
The vaccine doesn’t protect against the very-rare-genetic-unfortunate-bad-luck cervical cancer that is possible if you have not had S.
So scientifically speaking, if his silly comments about his daughters are correct – if they do have only the one partner who doesn’t have HPV thereby doesn’t pass it to them, then it’s unlikely the vaccine will be of any benefit to them.
That’s why I don’t think his comment is really on the same lines as Akins – scientifically speaking.
loading...
Just to throw it out there, there ARE some women still that remain virgins until they are married. I did, I got married last year and I was 27. So it does still happen
loading...
You could still contract HPV if your husband ever had sex with anyone else before you were married.
loading...
He hadn’t, but I realise that that is a true rarity these days.

Quotes from Tony Abbott on abortion and various other issues affecting women:
http://thedawnchorus.wordpress.com/2010/08/05/reasons-to-not-vote-for-tony/
You may also like to go back over Abbott’s policies as Health Minister during the RU486 debates.
And remember, abortion is still a criminal offence in every Australian State and Territory except for Victoria and the ACT – everywhere else you can be tried and made to prove specific circumstances. We’re not as progressive as people like to believe.
loading...
Anddddddd the last successful prosecution for abortion in Australia? Pretty sure the last time they tried to prosecute was that couple in Cairns and the public was in an uproar about it.
I never ever said that Abbott didn’t have ridiculous and outdated views on things.
But I did say he wouldn’t make scientifically, medically baseless and stupid comments like Akin would.
While I think Tony Abbott is a righty and his religion makes me uncomfortable, I don’t think he even comes close to being as crazy conservative as some of the politicians I’ve seen in America.
Religion aside, Tony Abbott is practically a socialist compared to some of the economic conservatives in America. Don’t even get me started on our superior health care, industrial relations, etc.
loading...
Meghan B, it is well documented that the safety of RU486 was under question. THIS is the reason it was suspended.
I’m so sick to death of this Emily’s List nonsense that keeps lying about Abbott. It’s tiresome, defamatory and a blatant LIE to vilify a man because of his religion! He has no more intention of outlawing abortion or premarital sex than Gillard has of banning marriage and childbirth.
Will you be so quick to scorn when we have an Muslim PM who insists that gays be rounded up and imprisoned?
loading...
I have to say, C, I am not keen on Tony Abbott’s strong religious conviction.
I do prefer that Julia Gillard is an atheist.
However, I do think that faith can stay out of politics and I do think Tony Abbott is making an concerted effort to keep it out of his – at least in the last couple of years, I have noticed that.
loading...
I agree, Anonymous. The separation of state and religion is imperative but I have to say, in light of the pack of devious misfits governing us at the moment, a bit of moral fibre wouldn’t go astray.
loading...
What on earth does ‘moral fibre’ have to do with religion?
loading...
As Tony Windsor confirmed last week what we all suspected, Abbott would say and do anything to be PM! No concerted effort other than self interest I’d say.
loading...
Wel, Julia Gillard is full of it when she says she doesn’t believe in marriage between two people of the same sex.
It’s quite obvious she is lying through her teeth when she maintains marriage should be between “a man and a woman”. Saying anything to keep the conservative left happy to retain Labor leadership?
Works both ways. Tony Abbott is just an easier target.
loading...
Tony Windsor is a liar. That never happened.
Hypothetically, lets say it was true – if Tony Abbott was prepared to sell his A for the Prime Ministership, then what did Julia Gillard sell to get it? Her soul?
loading...
C, it’s not a lie or defamatory – abortion IS outlawed in every State and Territory except Victoria and the ACT, as I’ve already stated. So your claim that Tony Abbott won’t outlaw abortion is true, because he doesn’t have to, because it already is against the law across the majority of the country.
Anonymous, in answer to your question, the Cairns case is the most recent example of where a patient was tried but in NSW in 2006, Dr Suman Sood was convicted of two counts of performing an illegal abortion where she failed to enquire as to whether a lawful reason for performing the abortion did exist. In WA you have to go through a panel, members of which are appointed by the State government, in order to seek an abortion past a certain stage. Not to mention the excessive limitations on the availability of abortion posed by distance and expense, especially in rural Australia.
If you think that Tony Abbott will have a mandate to be progressive just because women vote for him, look north and check out what Campbell Newman is doing to the funding of public organisations – including those responsible for women’s health.
loading...
Look, I really don’t like comments like that – it gives me the impression that you think Tony Abbott and Campbell Newman hate women and would like nothing more than to send us back to the kitchens.
I personally think today’s political leaders in Australia do need to be socially progressive, and if Tony isn’t progressive, he won’t last long as PM. I do think it’s time that he wakes up and smells the roses – the conservative right in the LNP is not doing him any favours.
loading...
I am not sure what it is about my comment that you dislike as it is all fairly evenly balanced and based on fact. These are statements that Abbott has actually made and events that have actually taken place. And I genuinely DO believe, not necessarily that Abbott and Newman “hate” women but, yes, that they have outdated views on the role of women and on women’s rights, and that they allow those views to have a significant impact on the policy they champion as leaders.
Further, Tony is the LEADER of the conservative right of the LNP. It is through the conservative right of the LNP that he gained the numbers required to topple Malcolm Turnbull by just one vote. In fact, if Peter Slipper had left the LNP sooner, Tony Abbott wouldn’t have won the spill against Malcolm Turnbull.
loading...
To quote Mr Abbott,
“What the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing…”

loading...
Sorry Meghan, I can’t reply to your latest comment, but I really don’t think Campbell is anywhere near as conservative as Tony.
Cutting funding does not mean he wants to eradicate women’s rights. While I might not agree with the choice to cut funding to health in Qld, Qld does need to pinch on the pennies to save on the pounds – so I don’t disagree with the funding cuts elsewhere in Qld.
I’ve always found Newman to be a moderate conservative, but I have disappointingly noticed some back tracking on his social views, since he has gained premiership.
I think Tony Abbott has become far more moderate since taking the leadership to be quite honest. I think he’s realised conservatism isn’t going to cut it, at least in relation to social policies, in Australia – take his proposed nanny scheme for example.
loading...
As you say Abortion is a state issue so Abbott/ Gillard’s views cannot impact on its legal status.
loading...
Sorry your incorrect ( a decision I was faced with possibly having to undergo) in western Australia it is legal to have an abortion up until 20 wks without a reason, after 20 wks you then go in front of a panel to verify the medical reasoning of a late termination which has a different procedure to a standard termination prior to the 20 wks. I ask people that if you are going to give out medical advice / information that you please make sure that information is up to date as you could be giving a person misguided information that could effect their lives… For those not sure please only take advice on this matter from your doctor.
loading...
Hi Jaz, what I said was “In WA you have to go through a panel, members of which are appointed by the State government, in order to seek an abortion past a certain stage.” Past a certain stage = past 20 weeks – perhaps I could have been more specific, but I wasn’t incorrect.
loading...
Also C, it cannot possibly be claimed that Abbott’s arguments against RU486 were based entirely on the perceived health consequences rather than his personal moral convictions when he made the following statement DURING these debates:
“Mr Speaker, we have a bizarre double standard in this country where someone who kills a pregnant woman’s baby is guilty of murder, but a woman aborts an unborn baby is simply exercising choice.”
A good article to read on this is this one by Dr Leslie Cannold: http://thehoopla.com.au/abbott-abortion-black-white/
loading...
And that is a perfectly reasonable statement. It is a matter of fact. Most intelligent women realise that the abortion debate is a ridiculous contradiction. If you want and love the fetus, then it is a baby from the moment of conception. If you don’t want it then it’s a bunch of useless cells. When life begins is something that society will never agree on. Abortion is a personal choice and will remain so under Abbott but he’s entitled to his personal opinions and I believe he’s a better man for them.
You need to remember that he is a loving and faithful husband and a father who has raised three outstanding young women. If anything, he’s much more in touch with women that Julia Gillard. His family would make sure of it.
loading...
So you concede that Tony Abbott doesn’t agree with abortion? Apparently that’s okay because you don’t either. Sterling argument.
Abbott is a few small steps to the left of Akin. There’s no doubt he’s sexist and thinks ladies have a particular role in society. I cringe at the thought of having a PM with his narrow minded views.
loading...
RU486 has been used safely in other countries for decades. Abbott’s safety argument was a smokescreen & not a very good one.
loading...
I think we have to collectively admit that you can have such a thing as a Christian terrorist. I think 9/11 knocked that possibility out of the collective public conscience, but that’s what is slowly starting to occur in the US. They are terrorising women. It needs to be labelled as such and persued with the same hardline as terrorism from other sectors.
loading...
So…..when did the dark ages return? Are we burning books now?
loading...
I’m not sure but I think I just heard Charles Darwin shudder in his grave…
loading...
Book burning? Eeek – my Harry Potters!!!
loading...
Yep. Books are first, women are next (if this guy gets his way).
loading...
By ‘legitimate rape’ is he implying women so often make illegitimate claims that legitimate ones are rare, or that there are sometimes legitimate reasons for a woman to be raped? Either way it’s beyond offensive.
How does someone this stupid get as far in life as he has?
loading...
It seems from the context to be the former – I notice a lot of right wing politicians often imply that a lot of sexual assault claims are false.
While the comments of US politicians can be alarming, let’s not forget that Tony Abbott suggested a woman doesn’t have an absolute right to refuse sex (“I think there does need to be give and take on both sides, and this idea that sex is kind of a woman’s right to absolutely withhold, just as the idea that sex is a man’s right to demand I think they are both they both need to be moderated, so to speak.”)
loading...
I read it as raped-in-a-dark-alley-raped, as opposed to you-know-you-really-wanted-it-acquaintance-rape.
Not that I agree with that distinction AT ALL.
loading...
These comments are typical of the religious, extreme right-wing in America. There’s something about these people that gives them an inflated sense of importance and arrogance…………..
Those people exist here too – we usually have a couple in our families or social circle and they’re so “lost” that it’s not worth taking them to task.
The main problem is that they’ve stopped learning – they know all there is to know.
When they’re so ignorant – they simply “don’t know what they don’t know”.
loading...
And THIS is why we have sex ed.
loading...
A failing of the American education system. Clearly this man was the one child who got left behind. This is the US, why don’t women push to mount a civil suit against him? He is trying to legitimise and excuse rape. I hope he is as thoroughly vilified and decried in the US as he would be here in Australia and that no one feels the need or pressure to back him.
loading...
what an arseclown
loading...
This man is a moron. Shame we are discussing him. Let’s just agree he’s a jerk and ignore him until he disappears.
loading...
Unfortunately he can’t just be ignored because other idiots are going to vote for him
loading...
my comments aren’t showing up!
loading...
ohhhhh human beings are so fecked sometimes. Many years ago I came across a chap who had fathered ten, TEN children with an assortment of ladies. He told me – with a straight face – that his sperm was so powerful that the pill wasn’t able to stop it. Sometimes you just have to shake your head and walk away, lest you right the job that mother nature got wrong.
loading...
Stop it! That’s so bad it’s actually quite funny…!
loading...
To quote the author Anne Rice: “Are women people? Or are they concepts in a religious belief system? Do they have human rights? Or are they the property of Christian men?”
That people like MR Akin might be running the US soon scares the crap out of me. It’s as if politics over that has take a ride in the Tardis back to the stone age. The seem to be fixated with these issues rather than coming up with a decent plan to fix their economy. WTF is going on over there???
loading...
Christian men have mostly been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Not many of them kill their daughters for dishonouring them or stone their wives to death for speaking to another man. Just saying.
loading...
wow. Just wow.
