1. Victorians have woken up today to the news that they have a new Premier. Ted Baillieu has resigned from the Premiership following a meeting of the Liberal Party yesterday evening. He has been replaced by Racing Minister and former failed leader of the Victorian Liberal Party Denis Napthine.

2. Fourteen Cronulla Sharks players have been offered a lesser penalty of only a 6 month ban if they plead guilty to charges of using prohibited performance enhancing drugs. Reports today claim that the players did not know they were taking inappropriate substances and are likely to sue the club for lost earnings if they are suspended from the sport.

3. Schapelle Corby may be facing a longer stay in her Bali prison cell than originally expected. Reports today state that Corby’s failure to comply with prison rules mean that she will not qualify for good behaviour commendations and that the jail governor is losing patience with her behaviour.

4. Jamie Jackson, the 18-year-old buy who was arrested by police in Kings Cross during the Mardi Gras, has spoken publicly after a video of his being pushed down by police went viral. He told Channel 7 news: “I didn’t deserve to be treated that way, that’s for sure… “I’m just completely in shock for the whole thing.” Mr Jackson has been charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest and offensive language.

5. Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, 58, has died after battling cancer for two years. Chavez served aspresident for 14 years.

6. BRW’s inaugural women’s rich list has been announced. The list includes Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue, but doesn’t include Gina Rinehart – because the list excludes anyone who started with inheritance. Vicky Teoh, who founded TPG, was top of the list with a wealth of $390 million. Westpac chief executive Gail Kelly the highest profile woman of the corporate world with a fortune of $70 million.
