Australia will get an R18+ rating for video games

Movies and television in Australia have long been rated on a scale that included a special category for above 18s, but video games have never had access to it. That’s about to change after parliament today voted to introduce an R18+ category which would come into effect from January in 2012. The gaming industry in Australia has been forecasted to be worth $2.5 billion per year by 2015 – a rate of 10 per cent growth a year. A Bond University study found that nine out of ten Aussie homes has a gaming device (whether a console game or otherwise). Previously, games that were deemed to graphic, violent or ‘adult’ were banned from sale here or re-produced with extra offending content removed, such as happened in the roaming Grand Theft Auto titles which allowed game characters to have sex with prostitutes. So, is an R18+ category long overdue, or a bad idea?

Gillard 380x257 News: Ban on R18+ video games overturned in Oz

Gillard on Four Corners

Claims Gillard personally orchestrated Rudd’s downfall

Doubt has been cast over the long-running narrative that then Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard was pushed, or ‘dragged’ into rolling then PM Kevin Rudd after factions pulled support. But now claims have emerged the devastating internal polling (which showed Julia Gillard’s personal standing was much higher than Rudd’s) was handed around to MPs by Gillard herself, in order that they be convinced a push for her as PM was not only worth it, but must happen. Labor MPs confirmed the information. Fairfax reported: “It also raises questions about the Prime Minister’s claim on the ABC program Four Corners on Monday that she had no specific recollection of the polling. The MPs are now prepared to speak on a background basis because they are disenchanted with her leadership, angry at her level of candour in her public comments this week, and no longer prepared to support her in any party ballot for the leadership. This stuff of Gillard’s that ‘I only tumbled into it on the day of the challenge’ is patently untrue,” said a caucus member she had lobbied before the coup.

Man guilty of smacking his son

An Australian Capital Territory man has been found guilty of smacking his teenaged son with a wooden spoon after the boy called his mother a ‘bitch’. The man avoided a conviction because the magistrate said the father was particularly remorseful. He had originally pleaded not guilty to a charge of common assault where his defence argued what the man did was ‘lawful chastisement’. Magistrate David Mossop yesterday found the man had taken things too far and had left the boy bruised and scratched around his legs and hands. However Mr Mossop accepted the boy had a history of poor behaviour and that the insult to the mother went too far. He accepted that the father displayed ”a significant degree of remorse” while still maintaining he was only trying to discipline his son. Speaking of Dads trying to discipline their children, what’s your take on this dad who went public to teach his daughter a lesson?

Antonio Guterres UN News: Ban on R18+ video games overturned in Oz

Antonio Guterres

UNHCR boss says we are ‘obsessed’ with ‘boat people’

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres told an Australian audience he found it difficult to take our ‘problems’ with asylum seekers arriving by boat and be as worried as many Australians are. “It is very difficult for me as High Commissioner, who has to deal with the whole world, to be convinced that 6000 is a very important problem,” Mr Guterres said of boat arrivals to Christmas Island. I understand that in the psychology of Australia, the collective psychology, this is an important problem … but you need to understand also the global perspective.”

He said that people smuggling had become ”a nasty business” linked to organised crime and it was important for governments to crack down on human trafficking. But, he said, protection also had to be offered to the victims of the trade, who often had no legal way to escape their situation.

Last year 1500 asylum seekers died in the Mediterranean Sea, as 57,000 people reached Malta and Italy by boat. Another 100,000 asylum seekers reached Yemen by boat.

Australia Post in parcel boom, thanks to online

Online shopping has led to a 10 per cent jump in the number of people sending and receiving parcels in the six months to the end of 2011. But while parcel deliveries went boom, letters are becoming a thing of the past. “The period leading up to Christmas really highlighted a widening gulf in profitability of our letters business and our parcels business,” chief executive Ahmed Fahour told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra yesterday. Parcel numbers were also up 20 per cent in December compared with a year before. “We delivered 3 million more parcels in December than we would in an ordinary month,” Mr Fahour said. “It’s taking our letters business backwards to levels not seen since the 1990s.” That would be because of a consistent use of email in place of letters. So spill, are you still a letter sender? And are you shopping online more often?

Philip Nitschke 380x218 News: Ban on R18+ video games overturned in Oz

Euthanasia advocate Philip Nitschke

Euthanasia campaigner may be disbarred

Right-to-die campaigner Philip Nitschke is being investigated for his application to import the sedative and euthanasia drug nembutal for a terminally ill patient who has since died. The inquiry by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, which registers and regulates doctors, started in late November, even though Dr Nitschke’s application had not been decided. The woman wrote in her diary: “That I cannot sleep due to this disease has meant that I get no respite … and I cannot live life to the fullest in the precious time I have left.” Doctors in Australia can import the drug under strict conditions as it can be used to ease pain, but when used in the wrong dosages it becomes an effective killer, which is precisely why some want to use it.

“A Bond University study found that nine out of ten Aussie homes has a gaming device”

    What a load of rubbish!

More like, Bond University surveyed other students and 9 out of 10 had a gaming device in their home.

    Typical Bond Uni study.

Ha! Actually, I went to Bond Uni (not a huge fan generally) but I will say I know they are home to Australia’s leading expert in video game research. The Geoff (sp) is extremely smart and has done more research on gaming than anyone else I can think of.

Oh do you? I live on the GC and know plenty of Bond Uni students…

Even I (who had the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo until they were stolen a few years ago from my garage) don’t have a gaming device.
What of all the older people in Australia? You can bet 9/10 of those households don’t have game consoles!!!

I call BS on this “research”!!!

No, the figures do take in a broad range of gaming devices (we actually mentioned that study when it first came out in MM News one morning) but he does have pretty accurate figures of what many would call ‘consistent’ or ‘hardcore’ gamers and the point remains the majority of them are over the age of 18!

Geoff (Or Jeff, I can’t remember which) Brand does nothing but study this stuff. I had him for a few subject components like statistics in journalism and what not.

It really depends on what they consider a gaming device. My laptop coud be considered a gaming device even though I don’t participate in any sort of gaming.

Maybe they averaged the figures out – so it could be something like ’3 out of 10 households with 3 gaming devices each’.

Do you have an iPhone/Android phone? That’s a gaming device. Hell, computers with Solitaire on them could be considered a gaming device. So yeah, 9/10 is pretty reasonable.

I’m sooo glad the R18+ rating has come in. My husband is a gamer and I have regularly been shocked by what he can purchase under an M15 rating- there are images that would always be R in a movie! (I think it was called ‘House of the Dead’…. soooooo disturbing) We need this as some games currently on the market were tame enough to slip in but really deserved the R rating.

I’m a bit of a console gamer from way back and I am a little excited that the ban has been lifted on R18+ if only because I find it patently absurd that a whole media industry was refused an adult classification even though books and movies have them. Most gamers are over the age of 18.

    It’s not the 1950s!

I posted this on yesterday’s news post late last night, and apologies for those who have already read it, but it’s a really big deal!

‘Today was the launch for the Australian National Year of Reading. Somehow this super- important event hasn’t been given any airplay in the mainstream media. Why am I not surprised?

‘For anyone else who is passionate about raising awareness of literacy in our kids and encouraging their enjoyment of reading, go to your local library and check out all the activities they’re putting on! Support your school in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

‘For these and loads of other activities, take a look at the National Year of Reading’s website: http://www.love2read.org.au.

The Julia Gillard thing is news because she has previously given the impression that she wasn’t plotting KRudd’s downfall for quite a while before it happened. There are good reasons for this – nobody likes an assassin whereas someone who had to be persuaded at the last minute to step in as a saviour is quite a different issue. Anyone who believed her then might be interested in a bridge across the Swan River I have for sale. This also applies to anyone who thinks that she didn’t know about a staffer drafting a victory speech several weeks before the coup – no one in a political office is so short of things to do that they write things on the off chance without clearance from higher up.

What does it mean for her leadership? Probably not much. She’s been terminal for months although appearing on the program in the first place suggests a lack of judgement. Yet another early (or late) Christmas present for Tony though.

I am so over this controversy about Julia Gillard. As far as I’m concerned there IS no controversy!! It’s like the media outlets that ‘broke’ this story are firmly in the pay pocket of the Coalition – why else would there be such publicity over such a non event?

Can anyone honestly tell me that from the moment you start thinking about the possibility of a new job you don’t start composing an application letter or similar in your head? So some of her staff thought there might be a possibility of a need for a speech and started thinking about it. Most of the preparation for plenty of people (like me) goes on in your head, and what comes out on paper is the result of what has been going on in your head for a while. What on earth is the big surprise about that? Do we really think that on the morning of the coup Gillard and her staff, and all the people that put her there from the labour party all simultaneously woke up that morning and decided ‘you know, today would be a good day for a coup’? And that this was the very first moment they started to think about what she might say if this happened? Is that anywhere close to reality? From the moment that you consider something/ anything might be even a remote possibility, most people start thinking ‘Well, what if? What would I do?’ Some people can pick a paint colour for their lounge room off the cuff, but most of us start thinking about it quite a while before we do it. This is not a shocking piece of news!

I’m not enjoying being taken for an idiot by the media on this one (I am not referring to Mamamia – I am talking about the outlets that started this whole storm in a teacup!). Do they really think we are so gullible? This has done nothing at all to change my opinion of Julia Gillard. It just makes her and her staff human actually, and I guess I’m glad to know that they are constantly thinking of all possibilities – it shows they have a brain in their heads!

Off my soapbox now. :-) This has been bugging me in a big way for the last couple of days!

Agreed! For the most part. I watched Four Corners and was like ‘you just trolled me, that was a waste of an hour of my time’ because it revealed nothing and what was ‘new’ was more like a DUH moment then anything else. The first vaguely interesting turn in all this is the suggestion that she was personally spruiking the Rudd polling before the spill, which paints another layer of intent there that was previously absent (or at least not confirmed to be present!) These things have a habit of snowballing, so I’m watching the story with interest now…

A non event ? JG is once again trying to mislead the public and you are calling it a non event. This goes to the very core of her unpopularity. People in the office of the prime minister dont “just decide” to write acceptance speeches – they are instructed. Deputy prime ministers dont “just decide” to oust a democratically elected head of Australia – it is planned and calculated. JG was distributing internal poll results before the knifing yet now cant remember this ( this was the very core of the reason in getting rid of Rudd as was stated by ministers afterwoods).
Add this to other broken promises – Pokies reform, Carbon Tax, The marriage act and you are seeing a pattern that cannot be denied. You draw a very long bow when you say it is just reported by the media that is the pocket of the Liberals , even the darling of the left ( ABC) is starting to ask hard questions and finding that the answers are thin on the ground.

What is really, really annoying about all the media attention on how Julia Gillard rolled Kevin Rudd is that it is taking the spotlight off the leader of the opposition. Hello? Anyone? Tony Abbott could lead this country! Isn’t that a much more worrying scenario? The guy is a freak show.

That is a disgraceful thing to say about someone – a freak show ! The spotlight should rightly be on the person who is in power and making the decisions. I’m going to stick up for Australia Post…

I have a PO Box and get most of my online shopping sent to me via standard post…over the past 10 years 99% of my packages have arrived without any problems…

On the few occasions where companies won’t ship to my PO box and I have had to use a courier, well that’s when I’ve had all the problems…late deliveries, non-deliveries…to the point where now I think long and hard before buying from a company that won’t use standard mail and deliver to a PO Box.

Depends on the PO and what’s available…we have a medium size one…can take small packages, but not a big Amazon package…but they leave a red notey thing in the PO box, and you just take that into the PO and they get it for you…

You can get big PO boxes, but they cost more…ours costs about $100 a year…

I just have a tiny one and get the notes from the post office. They key for me was to find a post office (I had 4 options in my area with post boxes) that is open at good times for me. I ended up going with the one that has a special area where you can pick up parcels from 7am. It is brilliant because I can do it before work. The downside is that it isn’t open on the weekend. So maybe think about what times you are likely to be at the post office and make sure they are open then.

I believe Mr Nitschke is doing the right thing in supporting people with terminal illness if they find themselves in a situation where they have no quality of life, and no hope of recovery.
As for the ‘boat people’ , Australia needs to look at it’s role in the world and how we may have contributed (directly or indirectly) to the circumstances they are so desperate to escape. We are in a position to help, so we should. But process them quickly-either stay or go. No more detention centres.

I seriously think you guys are now officially at the point of looking at pictures of near naked women a little too often. Questioning whether there should be a few millimeters of crack showing above a swimsuit in a Sports Illustrated magazine. You are now seriously over thinking this.

In regard to the Sports Illustrated cover, they may have photoshopped it out (or made the bikini bottom smaller than it is in real life), but it depends on the girl’s anatomy as to whether the top of her vulva would be seen in that bikini, or not. Some girls have vulvas that start low, some that extend higher.

There is nothing wrong with wanting a new life in Australia, you can’t say that they should be content in Malaysia or Indonesia. You’ve well & truly missed the point of what the UNHCR is saying.

So which is it, they hop on boats and risk life because they are dying, or because they are not content. Big difference in your argument.

For the record, I am not anti refugee, I think our refugee intake should increase. What pisses me off is that you cant even speak ahainst this insideous trade around here without implications you are somehow uncaring. Hundreds are dying making these trips, HELLO.

Well how exactly do you expect people to get here? Where are the safe places they can wait. In Malaysia and Indonesia it is illegal for them to work and yet there are no supported places for them to “wait”. Are they meant to starve? Not to mention the other types of persecution they face.

I totally agree we should try to stop boat people because it is so dangerous but to do so, we need to provide safe refugee centers for them to wait in. And more importantly we need to break up the people smuggling rings. As the high commissioner said, it has become organised crime – prosecuting the sailors doesn’t help, they don’t organise it. It is like thinking you can solve the drug problem by catching a few street dealers.

This is a larger issue. Until we can provide a safe way for people to get out of dangerous situations, then they are going to keep getting on boats.

Exactly V, well done! WB_ no difference in my argument, you just can’t get your head around it. Yes, they are hopping on boats to escape but you’re saying they should just stop in M or I. 100′s will die staying

Ah thats right, that evil malaysia, where they will surely die in greater numbers than taking a leaky boat to australia. Except, isnt that where labor want to send them.

Yes Labour wanted to send them to Malaysia – to specific refugee camps where their rights were respected and they would receive appropriate housing etc. The whole sticking point with the Malaysian government was that they didn’t want to guarantee that they wouldn’t be persecuted and the whole thing led to the stupid situation where refugees would be better off if they started in Malaysia, got on a boat and then were sent back because when they were sent back they would actually have some rights.

Have a look at the UNHCR website to see what it is like being a refugee in Malaysia and then consider if you would let your family live in those conditions or if you would get on a boat: http://www.unhcr.org.my/refugeeMsia.htm

Yup. Unless you think the only political answer is to torture those that make it, including little girls and boys, for years at great cost to the taxpayer, and follow it up with a good dose of dog whistling against half a million Australians for NO other reason than to act as a deterrent, Rick, you’re pretty much a nazi.

Australia Post are also losing far more parcels than ever before :( I sent a parcel in an Aust Post pre-paid satchel, properly addressed with a clear return address too and it has never arrived. It should only have taken 3 days maximum to arrive at the sender, it’s now been 6 weeks. All Aust Post can do is apologise and tell me how many parcels they deal with.

I have stopped using them until they get their act together. A private courier is more expensive but the peace of mind is wonderful. I send parcels back and forth from Sydney to Perth where most of my family live and need to send parcels for work, and just too many have gone missing with AP. When I was sending my cousin the blanket we shared as tiny babies for her newborn child, I just couldn’t risk losing it!

That’s pretty annoying – but in Oz Post’s defense we send around 20 parcels domestically and internationall per day and in the past 3 years not one has been lost.

Oh Australia Post is the downside of online shipping. They are so bad at delivering! We often don’t get cards for our parcels telling us it’s at the post office, the post office loses them if we try to transfer from the 9-5 opening hour post office ( seriously, who is only open 9-5?!?).
I’ve started paying for FedEx etc. where possible. Not much better but more useful than the post office. Ok, rant over.

Auspost’s operating hours and delivery times for parcels requiring signature on delivery need to change. Where’s the logic in asking a person that is not home 9-5 to sign for a parcel to come into the post office between the hours of 9-5?! I work in the city and live in the burbs, I can’t come at lunch to collect, sorry! My post office have recently added new parcel boxes to resolve this issue, but they are not big enough for many of the things I order. It drives me nuts!

It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to receive personal mail in my workplace, especially not massive Asos, Strawberrynet etc. orders, so this isn’t an option for everyone.

Ours isn’t. Or not the main one (which is where our PO Box is, because I work close by and can check the box in my lunch hour).

And yeah, we got our PO Box because of the number of parcels that had gone missing through Australia Post. Really unimpressed that street delivery has become so dodgy around here.

Hmmm, that is weird. Mum’s PO Box was in an agency at a newsagent, and they’ve gone bust, so everyone’s got to head to the nearest PO and Aust Post are covering costs and redirection. Big of them.

The comments from the UN high commissioner on refugees are spot on. Australia needs to stop obsessing about a small number of boat people and look at the global situation. We are a fortunate country we can help those in need.
