FIFO workers is the name given to the thousands of workers (mostly men) who fly in and out of mining towns around Australia, to take advantage of the current boom.
But along with the people who work on (and under) the ground doing the actual business of mining, there is a different type of FIFO worker out there. And they are the sex workers who fly in and out, providing their services to the miners who are away from home.
The topic of sex work in mining towns has recently hit the mainstream media after a sex worker in Queensland was involved in an anti-discrimination case. The worker was told by a motel that she was no longer allowed to operate her business from their premises, but she challenged that decision in court and won.
Exactly what would life be like for a woman in a town full of men? As a sex worker, would your day to day life be different when your clients are people who were a long way from home, probably pretty bored in the evenings and starved of female company?
Mamamia spoke to Janelle Fawkes who is the CEO of Scarlet Alliance, which is the organisation that represents the rights of sex working in Australia, about the secret rise of sex workers in mining towns. Here’s what she had to say.
Can you tell us a little bit about the women who are flying in and flying out of mining towns in Australia. Who are they? Where do they come from? Do they work as sex workers in the cities they come from, or is it just something extra for women who work other jobs?
‘Touring’ or travelling for work is not a new practice for sex workers. Lots of workers who tour, travel to other capital cities for work trips and some also travel to regional locations, mining towns or cities near mining towns. It’s one of the many great things about our job that we are able to work when we travel. Some workers enjoy working in an intensive block of say 10 days and then having time off with family and friends. Locations like Kalgoorlie in WA have had workers travelling there for work for decades. I used to go there and work in my uni break.
Obviously there is a demand for this type of service in mining towns, how big of a demand are we talking?
There is a demand for sex work anywhere that there are people! Of course the greatest demand is in capital cities purely because of the concentration of people. Some workers say the work is less busy in mining towns and more busy where miners and other people go on break to relax.
What would be a typical days work for a FIFO sex worker?
Sex workers are sex and gender diverse and not a homogenous group – clients too.You could be pretty sure for most workers a work day includes checking your emails/calls, preparing your space and equipment including safe sex supplies, planning out your day and what you are wearing, scheduling times, dealing with towels/laundry, making sure to fit in food and answering a lot of enquiries!
Do workers notice any differences in the attitudes of clients compared with that of clients in cities?
Some workers say there are less time wasters (people who ring up to get information with no intention of booking) and that bookings are more straight forward or easy going.
How does the income differ from sex work in regular cities? Is it reflective of the mining boom and the amount of money workers are making?
As a sex worker travelling to a mining, regional or other city location (including capital cities) you are usually planning on working longer hours or in intensive blocks (several days straight). If you are working independently you need to make back your travel and accommodation overheads before you make a profit (or income) or if you are working for a sex industry business or escort agency you need to do more jobs to make the same amount (as the agency takes a cut of the amount the client pays) but your overheads are usually less up front. Prices are not generally higher (if at all) in mining or other locations. Of course clients pay more depending on what service they are requesting and the length of time they want to spend with the worker.
Where do the women operate from?
Sex workers work from a range of locations depending on where they have travelled to. Frequently though this may include an apartment, hotel or motel. In regional locations, mining towns and small cities the cost of hotels, motels or apartments is higher, options are fewer and there is less availability (especially if there is an event on) and sex workers do struggle with discrimination from hotel, motel and apartment operators.
Recently in Queensland a highly publicized case of a sex worker who had been traveling to a mining town and staying in a hotel for several years was refused a room based on the fact that she was a sex worker and would be working from the room. As the Queensland Anti-discrimination laws cover sex workers in Queensland she took a case to the commission, lost the first case, but then won on appeal. This sends an important message to the community that the high level of systemic discrimination against sex workers is not acceptable any longer.
Of course this win doesn’t mean that if you were a sex worker staying in a hotel, motel or apartment and you were creating a disturbance then of course the hotel could ask you to desist from the nuisance behaviour and if you continued you could be asked to leave. In this way hoteliers still have the right to address nuisance behaviour but can not discriminate against a sex worker just because they are doing sex work.
In the majority of cases sex workers are extremely discreet and nobody even realises sex work is taking place. It should be understood though that there are hotels, motels, and apartments throughout Australia that recognise sex workers are valuable customers for their business and do not discriminate – they even assist by providing extra towels etc.
What’s the biggest barrier for sex workers in FIFO towns?
The infrastructure of small towns/cities and mining towns is often low. Health care services, suitable accommodation and general amenities may be hard to access or not available. Also sex workers are away from their usual social support networks and family and friends and may experience isolation in the same way other FIFO workers do.
It should be remembered that sex workers are both FIFO workers (although this is a new term that covers what is a long historic practice amongst sex workers) but we also provide services to other FIFO workers. In this way it should be recognized that sex workers working in these locations are providing a valuable service to that community and of course contributing back into the community by spending money in that location.
In many regional locations I have found the local community to be friendly, interested and respectful. Locations like Kalgoorlie in WA have recognized that sex work is part of their history and even have bus tours of the historic sex work strip. One of the sex industry businesses even has a daytime tour of the building!
It’s important to remember the members of The Scarlet Alliance are smart and savvy women. They run their own businesses. They know their rights. But there’s another type of sex worker in these mining towns – and that’s the trafficked sex worker. Recent news reports suggest young women from South-East Asia are being trafficked to the mining towns in Queensland to work as sex workers – also on a fly in, fly out basis. And they’re reportedly being coerced and threatened into doing it.
It kind of makes you wonder. When you take thousands of men and place them in towns hours away from their loved ones…. Is this what happens?

Why is everyone assuming that the FIFO workers using this service are in relationships? There’s plenty of them out there that are single, and I say it’s no one’s business but their own. Good on them!!

I see the tired old big bad sex worker hitting on all our menfolk schtick is still alive and well.
*Laughs to self*

Im not understanding the point of this. Men wanting sex, sex workers capitalising on this, everyone gets what they want, everyones happy. So the problem/ issue/ hook of the story is…….what?
loading...
It is just an interesting look into the lives of other people!
loading...
It ain’t just the FIFO workers who want sex.
Hands up who doesn’t !

Frankly I don’t like the tone of this articlel. It speaks as though it is to be expected that FIFO mining workers have no character and are unable to control their bodily functions and desires. They need servicing! Sounds like a lot of people (mainly men) are being exploited and brain washed into thinking they need this sort of sex. Give us a break and refrain from speaking in such generalised terms inferring such lack of self respect in so many FIFO mining company workers.

Feeling quite pleased right now that hubby works off-shore. Less likelyhood of sex workers being flown in. And no thanks, if you know of this practise occurring off-shore I don’t need to know about it. That’s the last thing I’d want to worry about when hubby leaves for four weeks at a time.

Ditto that! We only need to start worrying if they start letting sex workers into Helicopter Safety and Escape training courses

I wouldn’t like it if my partner was wasting his money on sex workers!

Im a little shocked by this article and it’s contents my husband is fifo and whilst some mining towns do have sex workers the fifo workers that live in camp and there is only a pub in town do not have sex workers. The towns with sex workers are mining towns where a majority of the miners actually live in town. Most fifo miners live in the middle of a mine camp not a town and no…..sex workers are not allowed into the camps.
We have lived in both the city and a mining town there where more sex workers in the city then a mining town.
I think this article is a little exaggerated and not really something that is a huge issue.
I would be more worried about the married men who have insure girl friend ( their own co workers) that is more common then men seeing sex workers.
loading...
I suppose I agree with you on most of your points but you’re incorrect in saying that sex workers are not allowed into the camps. In the several camps I have worked on, they are. In fact at one camp, the site manager would wander around a pester the sex workers- not to leave site, but to sign in and out of site when they are there.

My husband was a FIFO worker for a security company. He said that in the town there was a Thai restaurant and if you went in and asked for “the special” they took down your room number, gave you a time and a girl was sent to your room. They were young thai girls who were waitresses at the restaurant and didn’t speak english.

Could I just point out that there a few comments about guys cheating in response to this – but the fact is that the majority of guys using these services are single. For guys in places like Kalgoorlie, it’s often difficult to end up in a relationship of any sort simply because of the male to female ratio of the place, and for guys in bigger cities it’s often hard to maintain a relationship when they spend so much time away.
loading...
So right especially as kalgoorlie has very few fifos they live in town with their families it is for sure mOre the single men.

The sex trade is isolated towns dominated by men is not a new industry. But seriously get your facts right….. Most mining operations are in isolated areas accessible only to mining staff. The men and WOMEN work 12 hour shifts eat at a central point have a drink in the wet mess and go to bed! End of

Agreed, my husband works as an engineer at a gold mine, the minesite is nowhere near a town. The mining camp where the workers stay is only accessible to authorised mine workers. The majority of mines in WA are like this, only a few are close to townsites.

Didn’t she say it is actually more likely the cities they go to when off duty?

When my hubby was FIFO he made a point of saving himself for me and each time he came home for a week we had another honeymoon! When our children were pre-school we used to pop on a video and keep them busy so we could spend time together. I don’t think the true emotional intimacy achieved this way could ever compete for sex that’s just paid for
loading...
Sorry but why would he need to make a point of saving himself for you, he is your husband, there should be no point to be made. Sorry I’m not meaning to sound bitchy, maybe I missed your point and you mean he abstained from masturbation???

To the sex workers…..congratulations on a job well done !
They are offering a service where there is a demand and I hope that they make squillions by providing that service.

Thank you for at least mentioning the girls and women that are trafficked from SE Asia into the mining areas of Australia. This is a huge problem & needs a whole post of its own. I have lived & worked with girls from SE Asia who have been rescued from trafficking. The impact it has on their future is unimaginable.
loading...
I agree Juet Srey, trafficking of women and children is a huge problem. And I too would love to see a post on this issue. Unfortunately there is obviously demand for this type of sex and that is disgusting! That someone would prefer to pay for sex with a slave makes me sick.
As for FIFO sex workers, I actually took a tour of a brothel in and it was fascinating to meet the madam and hear all about how it works. Met a few of the sex workers, most were uni students supporting their studies. It appeared to me that it was a very professional way of meeting a demand in a town full of men.
Massive difference between the two.

I really get sick of reading these articles about FIFO lifestyles/communities…sure this element exists but a lot of minesites are closed remote sites, not based anywhere near a town and one can not simply book a flight there…sex worker or otherwise. My partner is away for 8 days at a time, works for a very family friendly company with other like minded people…not all horny cashed up bogans!!
loading...
If you are in a serious relationship and really love the person – FIFO is NOT a healthy lifestyle for a relationship. I have so many examples of people who swore their partner would never cheat on them and then BANG! Left at home with kids while he now explores his new relationship with the GIRL FIFO worker (not sex worker) cleaner, truck driver, enviro, hr etc etc
IT is not a healthy lifestyle no matter what you think.
Money is not everything
What he says and what he does are 2 different things
He is lonely out there, tired and would love a companion
DONT PLAY DUMB GIRLS

Different relationships work for different people.
Just because the lifestyle FIFO work brings with it doesn’t work for you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for anyone else.
loading...
Sorry but this in nothing but insulting to the men and women in FIFO relationships, these relationships do work and work well. If a person is going to cheat they will do it with anyone who wants to participate… That may well be your next door neighbor !
loading...
Agreed, if your husband works in the city he has equal opportunity to sleep with a woman from work, just because they work away does not indicate that they will have more opportunities to cheat. If your partner is inclined to cheat they will do it in any environment, do not blame FIFO blame the person with the defective morals.
loading...
The female left behind in the city/town with a larger population and no partner around for weeks probably has far more opportunity to cheat.
How do you think the men deal with that notion?
loading...
As the partner of a FIFO worker I find your generalization offensive.
What about the men who are commiting/trying to commit suicide in their donga on the mine site because they’ve come home from a stint at work to find the wife has packed up, taken the kids, shacked up with another bloke and left the FIFO worker feeling utterly helpless with nothing, no support and can’t seem to see a way out? Believe me, this happens more often than you’d think, I have friends who are site based medical professionals who have shared some heartbreaking stories.
Every relationship is different, some FIFO workers (men AND women) cheat, yes that’s true, but so do some of the workers partners who are left in town for 1 – 6 weeks at a time. And guess what? Some people who work 9-5 jobs in town and come home every night cheat too!!
loading...
Think your incorrect my hubby did fifo for 3 years and we are now married and have been togethor for yrs. Whilst he no longer does fifo we used to talk about men having affairs or leaving their wives for a fifo woman but that doesn’t happen very often. My hubby working fifo made us stronger to say don’t go out with a fifo is a bit misleading plenty of fifo relationships work and plenty are better for it and no their hubbies don’t cheat nore did mine I know this because I was friends with people he worked with more loyal to me then him it very rarely happens and Sometimes fifo is not because of the money it’s because that’s the job available.
We are not dumb what so ever in fact I’ve heard so many stories of men cheating with the girl nxt door or with his girl friends best friend so what does that say? Don’t have a best friend, move house if a woman moves in nxt door?????
loading...
why is he not doing fifo now??
because its not healthy for a relationship!!! I AGREE

Glad to hear some comments supporting FIFO workers. My boyfriend is about to start FIFO and this will be my first long distance relationship. Seeing negative comments doesn’t help in any way, only worsens the nerves we’re already feeling.

I am the wife of a FIFO worker.
I take genuine offence at being labelled dumb, or accused of ‘playing dumb’ for having complete faith and trust in my husband to respect our relationship and love we have and that he has for our family.
This has never been a concern for me.
I have no doubt many FIFO workers have affairs with co-workers, as I have no doubt any other worker in any other environment has affairs with co-workers, and I have no doubt there are many reasons and contributing factors to why this occurs.
But I find it sad that you would seemingly generalise all FIFO workers as unfaithful and all partners at home as ‘dumb’ to think otherwise absolutely abhorrent in an environment when so many FIFO families work very hard to maintain healthy relationships. I know many FIFO families who are evidence of this.
Be fair.

I laughed reading some of these comments but as the wife of a DIDO mine worker I have confidence my partner does not engage in FIFO services of sex workers. However we both know people who do use these services but that’s their prerogative plus they are single! Its been going in for years and is a highly organised arrangement and is not new to this industry. What I am seeing is a huge influx of Asian women being advertised in local papers and other mediums who barely look 16 let alone 18, seeking clients. It saddens me on so many levels being a witness to this increasing practice.

“It kind of makes you wonder. When you take thousands of men and place them in towns hours away from their loved ones…. Is this what happens?” – Mamamia team
I don’t understand what you’re asking here? That men use sex workers? As Janelle stated, this happens everywhere and the greatest demand is in capital cities. That women are being coerced and threatened into it? Wasn’t it reported by Mamamia recently that this happens in all areas of Australia, not just mining communities? Are you intimating that more ‘unavailable’ men are visiting sex workers in mining communities than in capital cities? If so, that’s pretty judgemental and completely unfounded so far as your article goes.
I read the story to be about the women who choose FIFO work, their experiences and their conditions. Your question at the end doesn’t seem to link back to this whatsoever.
What’s you’re point here?

I have a really big problem with the morality of this, i know that i will cop flack, im not trying to stop it or tell people not to provide this service. I feel for the sex workers, the clients, the families of the clients. I feel for them whatever they are FIFO or normal 9 to 5.
In the instances when it inflicts pain on families through breakdowns and cheating, i know its the person who cheated who is to blame and there is temptation everywhere but it makes me sad.
ive been cheated on before, i now have a FIFO fiance, and as much as anyone can tell me that, i have to trust him, he should be faithful if he loves me, the what if’s get me every time because the what ifs have become a reality for me in the past, it can and does happen in my head.
Other than that he really enjoys his job and is getting a great opportunity, i have my own career and we have both lived seperately and single for numerous years prior to meeting so at this time in our lives it works for us.
I also work in the mining sector but in a major city. I manage projects and hire people to work away from home. I am constantly asked to find people jobs, people looking at the “big bucks” and to most i say we are not hiring because they are not cut out for the FIFO roles. Its hard for young families, its hard for single parents, company’s wont train and induct anyone for the positions because of the risk they dont last because partners and kids cant cope without them, drug and alcohol testing is mandatory and there are alot of people who wont give up the drugs and think they wont get caught. these people dont understand it is more that a job it is a reputation and if you get detected your company is usually blacklisted.
From my experience and viewpoint i dont beleive the FIFO lifestyle will work for the long term, just like the early gold rush husbands went in search and usually their families followed in due time, small towns will swell with people and infrastructure will grow gradually. lets hope councils and local government see this and assist with keeping rents affordable and fair to encourage families to be together.

Is there a way to stop the use of sex traffickers? Could the men refuse Asian women, therefore effectively ruining the traffickers trade? I would imagine there would be some Asian women who are Australian and do it of their own accord, but there must be something we could do!
loading...
They are probably cheaper and more “willing” (able to be coerced into) to work without protection.
loading...
There must be something that we can do ?
I ponder and I ponder. Short of issuing the Asian sex worker with a government certificate saying that she is there, opperating on her own free will and not under the control of some Bangkok drug lord what do you suggest ?
As I say….I ponder and I ponder.

Yes. It’s called issuing working visas to bona fide sex workers who want to work in Australia. It would have the double effect of preventing women who want to legitimately engage in sex work in Australia from having to utilise the services of sex work traffickers, and will cause sex trafficking to fall apart because women (and men!) who want to come from places other than Australia to work in the sex industry will be able to do it legally, and sex traffickers will no longer have an income stream.

“It kind of makes you wonder. When you take thousands of men and place them in towns hours away from their loved ones…. Is this what happens?” – Mamamia
“There is a demand for sex work anywhere that there are people!” – Janelle
So, yes, I’d imagine the men who are away from their wives, lonely, bored & cashed up, would be more inclined to seek out a sex worker, but sex work is in demand everywhere.
loading...
How very demeaning to men. Are they are such simple creatures that being away from the little Missus, lonely and bored with money means they couldn’t possibly do anything but seek out sex with strangers.
Thankfully they must all work at different mine sites to the ones I know.

This worries me so much in WA. I’m single and you’re hard pressed to find a guy that doesn’t work away (“up North”) – how do you trust them? When you’re starting a new relationship and you think he’s going away to work for a week or two and won’t be having any contact with other women, how do you know that it’s the truth? And god knows what diseases they are bringing back into the community.
loading...
These are savvy sex workers (apart from the trafficked girls perhaps, sadly) – they are definitely using condoms!
loading...
You trust them by not generalising that all FIFO workers will be unfaithful.
My current partner works away, has never once been unfaithful to me and I know he never will, on the other hand, my last two partners cheated on me and they both had 9-5 jobs where they came home every night!
Douchebags are the ones who cheat, not (all) FIFO workers.
loading...
If they’re bringing diseases back into the community, it’s bloody unlikely that they’re getting them from sex workers.
loading...
Its not really any different to men and women with other occupations who have to work away. My partner is in the defence forces, and works around Australia and overseas for at least a few months a year. We trust each other not to sleep with other people because we’re serious about our relationship. If you honestly think he’s the sort of guy who you can’t trust not to sleep with other women, then you shouldn’t be with him, regardless of his occupation.
loading...
Hi Ash, I’m female and I’ve worked in a FIFO job for 4 years. Trust me – there aren’t that many women for men to cheat with and most women up here wouldn’t be interested in a guy with a girlfriend anyway. As Jess88 mentions, the only guys that would cheat are douchebags wherever they happen to work. I think people hear horror stories about what goes on “up north” and a lot of it is exaggerated.
loading...
I am pretty sure if you’re a legit sex worker, you get physicals and tested for disease. Also use condoms, which not only prevent STD’s but pregnancy.
loading...
sex workers have some of the lowest incidences of STD’s statistically. I think young people have the highest … though cannot recollect … seems likely though.
loading...
Ash I would suggest your reasons to worry about all those issues are no more necessary with a FIFO worker than they are with any guy.
loading...
A friend of mine is a FIFO worker and he had his girlfrien fly up to visit. They went out to tea and ended up sitting next to a group of strippers who flew in from the Gold Coast and got talking to them. They were earning $6000 (!!!!!!) for the week to strip, plus all meals, flights, accommodation paid for. If they wanted to have sex with clients they would make extra money on top of that. I can’t even fathom getting that sort of money for a weeks work.
loading...
I live on the Gold Coast and I have several friends who fly over to be “skimpies” (most commonly women who serve beers in their underwear – but could also mean topless and/or including strip routine).
They can earn up to $2K/day! And they just choose not to work every day! There is a huge demand out there – they could work every day if they wanted, and they are always recuiting more girls.
They don’t need to have sex with clients and – *as far as I know* – my friends don’t.
