1. Channel 9 journalist Peter Harvey passed away today. The 68-year-old was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October of last year. Harvey was a journalist in Australia for more than 40 years during which time he worked at The Daily Telegraph, Newsweek and the Nine Network. Earlier this week, his daughter Claire tweeted: “Dad is comfy, and smiling, in hospital tonight with our mum Anne holding his hand. He asked me to thank everyone for the love.”

2. An Australian conman has been jailed for 7 and a half years, after using Photoshopped images of himself with powerful public figures to convince wealthy Sydney investors to give him money.

Dimitri de Angelis, 47, fleeced more than $8 million with edited photos of himself with Queen Elizabeth II, Bill Clinton (left), the Dalai Lama and other famous ‘friends’. He also rented luxury cars and holiday homes to trick investors into believing he was a significant industry figure.

3. A standoff between Victorian Police and an armed, violent sex offender has entered its second day in Melbourne’s north. Officers tracked serial rapist Antonio Loguancio to a bungalow in Glenroy at 7pm last night, and they have since been attempting to convince him to surrender. Loguancio has been on the run for several days after breaching a supervision order. He was released on the order after being jailed for 12 years for multiple counts of rape, assault and other offences.

4. Australia has just experienced its hottest summer ever, with an average temperature of 28.6 degrees Celsius. According to the Bureau of Statistics, the previous hottest summer was recorded in 1997-98. Unsurprisingly, the record-breaking hot spell that swept across the country in January contributed to the higher average temperature.

5. Treasurer Wayne Swan has urged Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to stop “inciting” Liberal states to undermine the Government’s Gonski reform. The comments, made during a speech in Sydney last night, follow announcements by the QLD and VIC governments that they intend to favour their own school funding plans over the Gonski model.

6. A student at the University of North Carolina is facing expulsion for ‘intimidating’ her rapist by speaking out about her assault. Landen Gambill has repeatedly told her story of enduring sexual abuse and harassment from her ex-boyfriend, while never publicly identifying him. However, she was called to appear before the university’s ‘Honor Court’ last week, charged with “disruptive or intimidating behavior that willfully abuses, disparages, or otherwise interferes with another”.

7. Musician Ben Lee has signed on as a mentor for the upcoming second season of The Voice Australia, along with Jessica Mauboy, One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder and Sneaky Sound System vocalist Connie Mitchell. Lee will work as a mentor for Team Joel, Mauboy for Ricky Martin’s team, Mitchell for Team Seal and Tedder for Team Delta.

6. Basketball legend Michael Jordan is the target of a paternity lawsuit in Atlanta, USA. Pamela Smith filed a lawsuit on 6 February claiming Jordan is the father of her teenage son. She requests Jordan undergo a paternity test, pay child support, and share healthcare costs that are not covered by insurance. The lawsuit also demands the boy’s surname be changed to Jordan.
