Man fined for lack of sex with wife
A French court has ordered that a man pay his wife 10,000 Euro for not having sex with her over a period of years, an act which meant he ‘failed in his duties’ to her. The man was fined under a portion of French law which states married couples agree to ‘share a communal life’ which evidently includes sexual relations. They had been married 21 years before the woman filed for divorce two years ago, citing problems with their sex life.
‘Traffic light’ warning labels of food turned down
The Federal Government has decided not to endorse a scheme that would see red, amber and green (traffic light) warnings for key ingredients like salt, fat and sugar on food labels. Health Minister Nicola Roxon said there was not enough evidence to suggest those types of labelling systems worked. The light system had been recommended by the Government’s own review, however. Critics said it was proof the Government had bowed to industry pressure.
Civil unions pass in Queensland
It was a close vote – 47/40 – but it was enough and history was made in Queensland late last night. Civil partnerships are now an option in Queensland. As the vote was handed down an overflowing gallery burst into cheers and applause. It came 21 years to the day that another Labor Government in that state decriminalised homosexuality. Premier Anna Bligh said: “This bill is fundamentally about the human rights of Queensland’s citizens, but it is much more than that, it is about the joyful business of love and that is why it has touched the hearts of so many Australians, why so many people believe that Australia should be dealing with this issue.” The vote was passed by conscience votes from the Government (four Government MPs voted against) but the Opposition were told to vote against it as a Bloc by unelected leader Campbell Newman, who said he supported civil unions, but not a change to the law.
Fertility clinic claims 90% success rate for under 38s
A new IVF screening technique, which allows only the best and healthiest embryos to be implanted, has led to one IVF clinic claiming a 90 per cent success rate for women under the age of 38. Microarray comparative genomic hybridisation, or CGH, has a success rate of 65 per cent for women over the age of 38. The process does cost an extra $3000, however.
Boy band Hanson to release a range of … beer
You’ll probably remember the then long-haired brothers who released the one hit wonder MmmBop in the 1990s. But the brothers have now grown-up and, looking for a new audience, they’ve decided to release a range of beer. Called MMMhop, after one of the key ingredients in the beverage. The more you know.
Federal politicians to get a Christmas pay rise
The Prime Minister will soon be taking home $470,000 a year in pay in the top job – more than US President Barack Obama and UK PM David Cameron. All MPs will receive a hike to the minimum base salary they receive and will watch it rise from $140,000 to around $180,000 a year. For the first time ever there will be a special ‘loading’ applied to the salaries of Opposition shadow ministers. News.com reports: “The lifetime Gold Pass (travel trips and perks for all former MPs) will be axed for future MPs as part of an overhaul of entitlements aimed at cleaning up a system open to abuse. The overseas study allowance – which allows MPs to travel first class around the world to study wine regions and fashion houses – will also be junked.” The changes were recommended by the independent Remuneration Tribunal and have the support of the Opposition.
This is interesting, and we might be watching history in the making. Burma, an initially quite prosperous and relatively peaceful nation, has been ruled by a military junta almost four decades. It was dissolved last year and a general election held, installing a civilian government. But none expected dramatic change to the years of persecution of ‘resident aliens’ and political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi – a pro-democracy activist who was held in detention for more than 20-years and recently freed. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is flying to Burma to meet with her – the first time a representative of the US has been to Burma in more than 50 years. It seems to be a delicate balance for the new Prime Minister, who appears to be pushing back on ties with China, trying to hold military hardliners at bay and carry out a reform program. Baby steps, but success means a better quality of life for all in Burma.
And here is Beyonce knocking those knocked-up rumours that she faked her baby bump.
Yup, she’s making fun of the Daily Mail for saying she made it all up:

I grew up taking it for granted that as a female I could do whatever I chose. Thanks predecessors.
We are now a step closer to my sons, in the future, taking it for granted that they can marry their partners, whether they be man or woman. Thanks QLD.

Sad to hear Artie Beetson has died from a heart attack this morning at 66. He was pretty good, for a Qlder…

He was more than pretty good!

I strangely like Wally Lewis too. Can’t abide Alfie Langer though. Weird!

Alfie grew up next door to my mum! They used to play cricket together. Funnily enough!

Couldn’t stand him back in the day when he was playing. Not sure why!

Same. When they brought him back that year for Origin I thought, “what for?!” but he ended up being quite valuable – or appearing that way anyway (helps when everyone passes you the ball).
One of my favourite impersonations is Alfie after winning the Origin in 92 by one point “I’ve never kicked a field goal in a real game before and yeah, nah, really happy it won the game for us tonight”
bahaha

I hate that yesterday the government are talking budget cuts and yet today They are boosting their pay packets. With so many families struggling to make ends meat, its a slap in the face for them to get such a huge rise.

I love Hanson. Then and now. That is all.

“it is about the joyful business of love”. I like that. Well done Anna Bligh.

If only Federal Labor had the same integrity and heart

Agree – I just love that quote, hits the nail on the head doesn’t it?

I can’t help feeling that gay marriage is a bit like women getting the vote, or rights for black people – we’ll look back in 50 years’ time and wonder “What were they thinking? What took so long to make such an obvious decision?”. All the countries that took that step first will be praised. Let’s be one of them.

That’s why I go to rallies. I want to be able to tell my kids that I was on the right side of history; that I marched in the streets against one of the big injustices of our time.

I was stunned to see that homosexuality was only decriminalised 21 years ago!
Campbell Newman has just lost my vote. What a dork.

In Tasmania it was still illegal in 1997!

I had a few friends get on the wrong side of that law back in the day. It got to the point that whenever there was a gig in tassie you hear the boys being reminded “there’s no 3 faces down there so keep yourself nice”
loading...
I was flabberghasted at that too. Still I am proud to be a QLDer today – good on you Anna Bligh and Labor.
loading...
I agree EXACTLY.
loading...
Well said, Anna Bligh – it IS about love and the rest of Australia really does want this issue to be dealt with. It’s not just going to go away.
Good step, Queensland. Hopefully this prods everyone else to get the real thing going.

PROUD TO BE A QUEENSLANDER!

This decision makes me wish I was one too. Well done, Qld!

What’s everyone getting carried away about – marriage still isn’t legal – need a federal law change for that. By getting this up, it may ease some federal politicians minds who can say “well, they don’t need the marriage act changed now – they can run off and have a civil union”.
loading...
The QLD ruling makes me soo happy! now for all the other states to follow!
The traffic light system, surely by now it’s not that hard to be able to recognise how much is too much on packaging. You don’t need to know everything about labels but if you can pick out the biggest ones and realise that it’s more than it should be, then having it could be bad to your own health.
When are we going to start taking responsibility for ourselves and our choices? I managed to educate myself on labels because there is a plethora of information out there. It’s really not that difficult.

There seems to be some confusion. Other states (NSW, VIC, TAS, ACT) already recognise civil unions so QLD isn’t a trailblazer here (thats what Sky news is saying anyway).
Still not enough as far as I’m concerned!
loading...
It’s not about Qld being a trailblazer because that is not the case as other states have already recognised civil unions. It’s more about moving with what appears to be acceptable to most people and making the change at a time when the issue is up for consideration by the federal government to change to the Marriage Act. It’s a baby step and a message but not a trailblazing act. The timing is wonderful though.
loading...
It certainly is a wonderful and timely step, not enough of one in my opinion but that is obviously a federal issue. My comment was merely pointing out that some people (mistakenly) think that other states don’t already recognise civil unions, which is untrue.
loading...
The reporting on this is quite misleading – it seems that QLD is a trailblazer here. Thanks for informing me!
loading...
I didn’t realise that at all (about other states). There you go!
loading...
Great news Queensland. You should be proud of yourselves
loading...
Anna Bligh is great. She has an incredible capacity to be human, warmly intelligent, and noble. A mutual friend tells me it goes all the way to her bones, too. She’d make a great PM.
loading...
go QLD GO!! Vhappy. Pollies? Are they kidding? Pensioners get a $20 rise maybe every year or so and Tony Abbott goes from a paltry $74K to $333? (Reported in the Sun in Melb this morning) Ms Gillard get paid more than Obama? God help us… Bring back Rudd. I will even take Malcolm Turnbull at this point but the rest of them… Meh.
loading...
While I think it is great that the Qld government has taken a stand on civil unions, the legislation really doesn’t do anything other than allow registration of partnerships that are already recognised at a Federal level for the purposes of social security, medicare, etc.
It is basically saying to Births, Deaths and Marriages that they can formally register relationships in Queensland – that have been recognised (just not by registration) for a few years now anyway. Isn’t it ridiculous you have to declare that you have a spouse within the meaning of taxation legislation if you are gay, but you aren’t allowed to be married?
It’s like adding decorations to a cake, the cake is still going to be delicious, but the decorations makes the cake look better.
UM ALSO, how did you forget SUCH IMPORTANT NEWS – Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant again (insert sarcasm font here!)
loading...
I can’t believe she s having another child with that tosser!
loading...
Haha, I just want Khloe to have a baby. That will be way more interesting!!!
loading...
Interesting that the MPs are getting a rise while the rest of the public service is stuck to average 3% a year (I know I know, poor public servants). Good they are cleaning up the entitlements though. Although, saying that, you couldn’t pay me enough to be a politician.
loading...
I know that the pay rise looks bad, but I’d be interested to know if we (tax payers) are actually going to be better off given that a number of allowances (lifetime travel, study OS etc) have been cut.
loading...
Australia is terribly behind with regards to food labeling. I lived in the UK a few years ago & they use a very clear labeling system that is similar to the traffic light system. They were also very progressive in terms of fair trade & wanting only to purchase products ie coffee, chocolate from fair trade approved suppliers. We really need to step up in this regard. Very disappointing.
loading...
The UK have amazing labels for veggie/vegan foods (and a much larger selection of stuff!) which I love. I wish we had such a great system here, makes it easier instead of looking through the ingredients.
loading...
Really happy about the Qld vote, sounds like one more baby step in the right direction.
loading...
So the Pollies are to receive an approx 28% pay rise.
The Department Secretaries received a 22% pay rise.
Most, if not all, Commonwealth Public Servants are being told that their pay rises cannot be more than 3% per year for the next three years because any more is not affordable.
Please explain?????
loading...
I would like to know that too! The department I work for hasn’t had a payrise since June 2010, our agreement has long expired and the department heads are refusing to budge on 3% nor will we get backpay when it is finally sorted. Not to mention all this talk of job losses to save money. They basically want us to do more work for less pay while they on the other hand are raking it in. It is disgusting greed on a whole new level.
loading...
Add to that the extra 2.5% that the departments have to find in the next 18 months. not a lot, I know, BUT, when the MPs etc are getting 20%?
loading...
I didn’t even read the rest of the news, because today I really don’t care. I am SO PROUD to be a Queenslander today!
Love is love, is love.
loading...
I wish I’d known that before 6am!
loading...
Just for you, Rick, I’ll go back and read it now…
loading...
Lol I was reading another article but quickly clicked on the news bit when I saw it pop up! Was waaaaay too excited!
loading...
So much for the separation of church and state! All the labor Qld MP’s who voted against the civil union bill stated it was against their Christian beliefs to recognise love between two same-sex people.
loading...
Must make the point though that one very prominent Catholic…Ms Anna Bligh…voted for it!!!!
loading...
I get that there’s a long way to go before there is equality but the fact that conservative queensland has done something makes me slightly more hopeful that real change is coming!
loading...
I don’t know how I feel about Civil Unions, it almost seems a little patronising? As in, ‘You get your own SPECIAL word for it! Now be quiet and stop complaining, it’s what you wanted’ but it’s not the same thing, really.
Although I’m angry and haven’t had coffee yet, so I might change my mind later today.
loading...
Can understand that people may feel this way but civil unions are as far as any State government can go. It’s up to the federal government to change the Marriage Act.
It sends a message to Canberra so hopefully the federal government will take notice.
Edit: Soz Nico … I should have read down to your reply to Rick too. I can understand how fed up you must be with the whole shenanigans of the “will they let us marry or won’t they” situation. Hope it all goes your way soon
loading...
Hopefully. I know it’s all ‘baby steps’ but it’s just so disheartening having to go through all of this! The only downside to gay marriage is my girlfriend’s mother officially becoming my mother-in-law (omg)
loading...
Bahahaha … relationships with MIL’s can be strange things but you get used to them *cough* … sort of … kind of … maybe …sometimes …
loading...
You’ve got to take the good with the bad with the these things!
loading...
I think you’ll find she’ll officially be your STEP MOTHER, not your mother-in-law – unless you’ve also married her kid?
loading...
I think you misread this like me!
She said “my girlfriend’s mother” not ‘my mother’s girlfriend’. I saw it that way too – must be tired today.
loading...
Oh, whoops, I totally misread! Sorry! How on earth did I think that was “my mother’s girlfriend”? D’oh!
loading...
Can’t reply to you, but just wanted to say – I read it that way too! Oops.
loading...
Not quite, but that would cut down on numbers at family gatherings!
loading...
Anna Bligh rocks.
loading...
Well done Anna. Next up: legalise abortion! Go!
loading...
I think I’m happy about this, but I can’t help but to liken it to when I was a kid and all my friends had a tamagotchi and all I could have was the $2 shop cheaper version. It was very similar, had the same basic concept but was certainly not seen as the “real thing”.
It’s a step, I just hope it’s not going to stop here.
loading...
Hey dork! I’m so with you. But it’s pretty cool given it’s as far as Queensland can go … but you’re right, I’ll be waiting for this weekend to see how the Feds go with the real deal.
loading...
Ooooh, I should have looked at the comments first, your analogy is better than mine! I totally agree, I think because I’ve run into a lot of people who expect me to be supremely grateful that I’m a UK citizen who can get married (sorry, ‘civil union-ed’) there and why am I complaining? BAH.
It makes me feel curmudgeonly.
loading...
That just made me giggle as I remembered my Mum had to take my Tamagotchi to work with her to keep it alive during the day.
And yes, as a Queenslander, I’m happy about civil unions. But for the sake of my gay brother, I hope things go well on the weekend.

Anna Bligh=True Leadership
loading...
So how come Anna and her party are about to be defeated in a supposedly landslide election in March next year? I ain’t a Qld’er but it seems lots of people (presumably out of towners?) love the woman, especially after the whole floods thing, so why is the whole party on the nose?
loading...
Media coverage that’s biased, sensationalised, twisted, only reports on the negative … the usual reasons
We will never really know until the day of the elections
loading...
I’m a queenslander and there are many, many reasons why I think we need a change.
loading...
I don’t. I wish I still lived in Ashgrove right now!!
loading...
Lol. I wish I lived there too but probably not for the same reason as you.
loading...
Don’t worry, I’m wearing my hot pink KEEP KATE shirt
loading...
Love it!
What’s the feeling in the community? In such an established area (read: high population of old people) I imagine a lot of them will want to give Can Do a go…
loading...
YAY! Go QLD!! We’re finally stepping forward!
loading...
I remember when Queensland was the most redneck, ultra right wing, police state – and look at it now. Well done Anna Bligh. Congratulations Queenslanders. Joh Bjelke-Petersen must be turning in his grave.
loading...
Unfortunately, despite today’s victory in the fight towards marriage equality, Queensland is still chockers with redneck, ultra-rightwing conservatives. I lived among them for years and they haven’t gone anywhere. Fortunately their numbers have dwindled enough that they no longer control parliament like they did in the 70s and 80s.
loading...
The 70′s and 80′s? Let’s not forget the 1998 state election, when a quarter of Queensland voted for One Nation!
loading...
I’ve probably tried to block that out for the shame – but, yes, good point.
loading...
I grew up in a One Nation town… and it all happened just as I was finishing high school.
I remember going to Uni in Bris and just avoiding telling people where I was from. Urgh, embarrassing!
I love being a queenslander today – so proud. I love that I can tell my daughter that in 2011, the year that she was born, we took a huge step forward in making marriage for everyone
I hope federal government gets onboard!!
loading...
The ACT’s legislative assembly keeps trying to make history on same sex marriage but both major parties, federally at least, are so determined to unmake history that our legislation is either overturned or threatened to be overturned. Appalling.
loading...
Andrew Barr, the ACT Deputy Chief Minister, is proposing the platform change and binding vote at the National Conference on Saturday and I couldn’t be prouder.
loading...
Proud to be a Queenslander today. Well done Anna Bligh and all the MPs who voted in favour of civil unions. Just brilliant!
loading...
I’m with you! I’m so proud to be a queenslander this news has made me cry!!
loading...
Me too! Listen up Canberra … its your turn next to do the only right thing you can do!
Went to high school with Anna. She always had a strong sense of social justice. So proud of you Anna! She told some great jokes too…
*sings going to the chapel and we’re gonna get marrrried….*
