A Chinese court will determine the fate of an Australian man today.

Less than a month after the executions of the Bali Nine, we’ll soon find out if another Australian drug smuggler will be executed on foreign soil.

A 25-year-old Sydney man is facing court in China today, after he was caught attempting to smuggle 30 kilograms of crystal methamphetamines out of the country.

Peter Gardner will soon find out whether he is guilty of the crime — a charge which carries the death penalty.

The trial is expected to last two days, although ABC News reports a verdict may not be known until later.

While the sentence is traditionally not announced on the same day as the trial, news.com.au reports that drug trafficker Gao Chaoneng was sentenced to death on the day of his trial in March.

In November 2014, Gardner was caught at an airport in Guangzhou with 60 vacuum-sealed bags of ice in his suitcase.

He was travelling with an Australian woman, Kalynda Davis, 22, who was released without charge after serving a month behind bars.

Channel Nine reports Gardner’s trial was inexplicably fast-tracked earlier this year.

It is expected to last at least two-days — and possibly longer before we hear the verdict.
