The arrest of the two footballers has divided a town.

 

1. Two teenagers in Ohio have been found guilty of raping an allegedly drunk 16-year-old girl at a party. Football players Trent Mays, 17, and Ma’Lik Richmond, 16, made headlines earlier this year when photos and video of the assault were shared over the internet. The boys were tried as juveniles and were sentenced to time in a juvenile correctional facility.

2. A 20-year-old Greek soccer player has been banned from playing for his national team after he scored a goal and gave the Nazi salute to celebrate. Giorgos Katidis said he didn’t know the salute had any sort of meaning. The Hellanic Football Federation said the gesture was “a profound insult to all victims of Nazi atrocities”.

3. As part of the conditions of a $13 billion Eurozone bailout, Cypriots with savings accounts could be charged a levy of 10 per cent. The controversial deal has seen masses of people line up at ATM facilities in the Mediterranean country to withdraw their money before it’s used to bail out troubled banks. Cyprus is the fifth country in the Eurozone to need a bailout.

4. According to a Neilson poll published today, twice as many voters would chose Kevin Rudd over Julia Gillard to lead Labor into the next election. On a two party preferred basis, the poll shows the Coalition leading Labor 56-44 per cent.

5. Five men in India have admitted gang raping a Swiss tourist who was in the country on a cycling tour with her husband. The woman was camping in central India when the farmers attacked – they tied up her husband and gang raped the woman in front of him. The case has reignited outrage in the country about extreme violence against women.

6. Since 2009, Ten patients at a Melbourne hospital have been infected with a super bug that has killed people in other countries. According to the Medical Journal of Australia, the patients at Dandenong Hospital were infected via a wash basin – but none have died. Infectious disease specialist Rhonda Stuart told News Limited no one had been infected with the bacteria since the hospital started cleaning its sinks with 170-degree pressurised steam.

7. Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen won the Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne yesterday. Australian Mark Webber placed sixth.

8. A father has made a film in an attempt to find his daughter – who disappeared with her mother from the US more than 10 years ago. Brozzi Lunetta said he made the fictional film Reya so that his daughter might see the movie and find him. Reya was abducted by her mother in 2002. She was taken to Norway, then India and arrived in Perth in 2004.
