dentist 380x228 News: One in three people avoid the dentist. How often do you go to the dentist?

One in three people avoid going to dentist because of the cost, and one in five people who do go to the dentist can’t afford it – according to a survey of more than 6000 people. Of the people that went to the dentist, 56% went for a check-up and 44% went because of a problem. Dr Jane Harford from the Institute of Health and Welfare’s Dental Statistics and Research Unit said “the concern about all of this of course is that when people do visit the dentist for a problem, they’re much more likely to have a tooth extracted than if they visit for a check-up.” The survey also found low income earners were the least likely to visit the dentist.

Meanwhile, the Greens have launched a Denticare campaign, including billboards and television commercials. They says investment in a Medicare-style system for dental care was one of the main conditions on which the party pledged its support for Labor. Speaking in response to Treasurer Wayne Swan’s announcement that the government would be making substantial cuts to return the budget to surplus, Senator Richard Di Natale said investment in dental care should not be scrapped.

Pinterest bans pro-annorexia pics.

Pinterest has banned Thinspiration boards like this.

By now, you’re probably been hearing a little bit about Pinterest. It’s the new social media phenomenon that’s taking the world by storm . (If you want to know more, we wrote about it here)

Anyway, Pinterest has recently banned ‘thinspiration’ or ‘thinspo’ boards. That is, content that “consists of photos, mottos and brief notes that urge viewers to lose extreme and unhealthy amounts of weight”. It changed its terms of service so that material that promotes self harm or self abuse, like anorexia and bulimia, is now prohibited. The move comes after Tumblr did a similar thing in February when they banned “pages that actively promote self-harm such as anorexia, bulimia, self-mutilation or suicide.”

Life saving competition goes ahead despite teen’s death.

Surf Life Saving Australia has decided to resume the national surf life saving titles today in the wake of 14-year-old Matthew Barclay’s death this week. Matthew went missing after he fell from his board during an under 15′s competition on Wednesday at Kurrawa beach on The Gold Coast. Competition was suspended during an extensive air and sea search, but his body was found yesterday morning.

The competition will resume today at another beach 20 kilometres away. Maroochydore Surf Club president Tim Ryan said Matthew’s parents wanted to competition to go ahead.

Matthew’s death is the third fatality at the championships since 1996, when teenager Robert Ga

His father, Phil Bird, said he was angry that another boy had died and was critical of the competition’s organisers. “We knew that it would happen again unless they made substantial changes, which they haven’t, and our worst nightmares have come true,” he said.

New breast cancer gene discovered

Researchers at the University of Melbourne have discovered a new breast cancer gene mutation, which means gene mutations responsible for causing breast cancer could be rapidly identified in the next few years. Lead researcher Melissa Southey said the discovery of mutations in a gene called XRCC2 could mean that more gene mutations responsible for causing breast cancer could be rapidly identified in the next few years.

Tony Abbott backs Greer

Tony Abbott has been caught saying he agrees with Germaine Greer about her comments on Julia Gillard‘s dress sense. Last week Ms Greer appeared on ABC’s Q&A and said: “What I want to do is get rid of those bloody jackets…they don’t fit…you’ve got a big a— Julia. Just get them off.” In Victoria this week, when a woman in the crowd said “Get some of those jackets off her,” Mr Abbott replied ““I know, I know, I know…Germaine Greer was right on this subject”.

UPDATE: Tony Abbott has since apologised for the comments. “It was an off-the-cuff response to an observation from a member of the public. I shouldn’t have said it and I regret it,” he said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

After the Q&A episode last week, Mamamia’s Rebecca Sparrow wrote a post in reply called “Dear Germaine, you lost me at ‘big arse’,” which you can read here.

And in case you missed them, here’s the pics we’ve been talking about this week.

Madonna’s backflip on Malawi

Madonna’s scaled-back charity efforts in Malawi have lead some people to question whether celebrities like Madonna are a help or a hindrance to troubled African countries. News.com.au reports:

“Madonna broke ground for a $US15 million ($14.4 million) academy for girls in Malawi in 2009. Earlier this year, Madonna’s Raising Malawi foundation announced that instead of building the academy, it is providing $US300,000 to develop 10 schools.”

The Malawi education minister said he’s been left in the dark about Madonna’s plans. “We need to know what’s happening. She can’t just say: ‘I’m building schools here’. We need to be consulted in order to work out where schools are needed based on our data,” he said. But the man who is leading Madonna’s project said those allegations are “absolutely not true”.

Madonna has adopted two children from Malawi, David and Mercy, both 6.

Is there anything that you’ve seen in the news and want to talk about?

I haven’t been to the dentist in 15 years. And the only reason is the cost. I am lucky to have $20-30 left at the end of pay day after paying rent/bills/food. And that left over cash goes on bread and milk for the rest of the week. How the hell am I supposed to afford a dentist. I have at least 2 wisdom teeth that need removing and my teeth could really use a proper check up and clean. There is a free system in my town, the waiting list is about 5years. Thank goodness my boys get free dental care at the school cause I would never be able to afford to take them.
I know lots of people in the same situation. I really think it is time that there was a dental care plan like medicare that will bulk bill/refund.

I’m doing a research paper right now because I’m in Dental Hygiene school in the USA and in my state we can give the injections and everything as the Hygienist. We inject each other all the time (multiple times a week) and I find it interesting, there are ways to make injects not painful at all! I sit still through them all now and might as well take a nap. If you ever get the cost portion solved, I’d search for someone who know how to give comfortable dental experiences. Dental professionals shouldn’t make you feel bad either, that’s ridiculous. Find a place that makes you comfortable. Also I don’t know what options are in Australia but ask for the cheaper options, like silver fillings (which actually last longer and have so many benefits… I won’t go into it though) It’s been proven oral health is linked to your overall health. So if you can get if every couple years at least do so!

Cost is the sole reason why I havent gone to the dentist in four or five years. The crazy thing is, I do have private health insurance with top extras! But the problem is that I never know how much the dentist bill will be before I actually go. Often it comes to hundreds or even thousands if they decide to do some work on the spot. I usually don’t have that kind of money on my credit card or in my savings! At the moment I’m living on the limits of my financial capacity (not by choice – long story for another time) and I don’t want to be stuck in the mortifying position of not being able to pay once my dental work is done and the receptionist tells me how much the bill is.

If they could give an accurate quote, I might be inclined to go to the dentist when I need to. But even a consult usually lands in the hundreds of dollars. :(

Firstly, I was astonished that the Q&A audience and panel laughed at Germaine Greer’s NOT-the-least-bit-funny comments. I have no respect for the way Ms Gillard has conducted herself but I would never ever have said that in a public forum. So stupid of Greer and her teenage cohorts. Just the type of people who would gather around the ‘cool girls’ while they bullied someone and video it on their mobile phones. A pathetic display all round.

Tony Abbott had nothing to apologise for so I don’t know why he even bothered. He didn’t make a comment on the PM’s backside.

For years he’s coped the Mad Monk and speedos jibes and the vindictive, puerile ‘Torpedo the Speedo’ campaign by the nasty girls of Emily’s List who perpetuate the myth that he will rescind women’s rights to education, pre-marital sex, abortion, birth control … in fact they’d have us believe that uterus’s will become Government controlled. Absolute crap and I’m fed up with hearing it. I really wonder how stupid they think women are.

He always takes it on the chin and with good grace.

When Ms Gillard apologises for lying to the electorate, when Oakeshott and Windsor apologise for betraying their constituents, when Albanese apologises for his incontinence insults, when Wayne Swan apologises for putting us in debt to China for 200 billion, when FAIR WORK pull their finger out on the Craig Thompson saga THEN they will deserve some respect.

At the moment they deserve none and have none.

Give me Tony Abbott on a bad day than Gillard at her best any day of the week.

The dumbed-down commercial networks and hipsters of the ABC keep insisting that women have a problem with Abbott. That is absolutely untrue.

Maybe young women who are more susceptible to the news grab believe it but among my business colleagues, associates, family and friends, he is extremely well respected.

I don’t understand why people don’t take responsibility for their oral hygiene, their dental care and their diets…….
Yes dentistry is expensive, a lot of essential care is ……. but if people installed correct diet and oral hygiene habits early in their children’s lives, coupled with positive reinforcements about dental experiences, a lot of expense, fear and avoidable treatment can be eliminated.
Working within this industry…… for over 20 years in both the private sector and public, I constantly am told by my patients how any of their dental situation is of their own doing.
And it really is that simple, make educated decisions about your kids diets Mums and Dads …… reinforce daily brushing……. and for the love of god FLOSS !!!

Good news about the breast cancer gene. At least it’s not a pharmaceutical company finding it and patenting it.
The dentist is ridiculously expensive. My son is one who avoids the dentist and I’ll be dragging him in a couple of weeks and helping him pay the bill (no doubt). We also have bills for braces to look forwards to (for 2 kids) and my husband has terrible gum disease. He’s spent a fortune, will be spending more, takes excellent care of his teeth and gums, but I still think his teeth will need to come out.

Tony Abbott was saying today that it was “light-hearted banter”. Banter is an exchange of playful, teasing, remarks. Emphasis on exchange. Funny, I don’t see Julia Gillard making classless remarks about Tony Abbott’s appearance, as if it is relevant to him doing his job… I guess he likes to think he was bantering with the person who asked the question and that it’s totally harmless.

Totally fed up with the remarks about Julia Gillard that seem based on her gender. Criticising her bum, no children, atheism, relationship status, that ‘satirical’ video on Q+A, cartoon editorials dressing her up in dominatrix stuff on her knees, being referred to as Bob Brown’s bitch, ditch the witch etc. I don’t remember anything happening like this to a male politician on this sort of sexual, gendered nature before. It seriously disgusts me.

To suggest that Gillard has never been heard in a “classless” exchange with opposition MPs is clearly incorrect. Watch her performance during Question Time…..she’s not above hurling the dirt with the best of them. And so tired of the constant rerun that criticism of her is based on her gender – it’s so predictable but such a bore!

Some (not all) of the criticism of her seems, in my opinion, to be clearly based on her gender and is sexualised/derogatory, ie the naked dominant-submissive comic which had her on her knees. Have you seen things like that in the media depicting a male MP? Heard anyone call Tony Abbott Julie Bishop’s sex toy?

Question time in parliament is face to face. Not behind any ones back or for a cheap media grab. There is a difference.

And those of us who saw first hand the hurt that we could cause and so we tend to be a bit more respectful.

Yes, I am older. I just don’t understand this desire to be so mean all the time. The nearest explanation that I can find is that things can be said on the internet without repercussions because no one knows who you are.

How different can Olympic uniforms possibly get? Our sporting colours are green and gold, so the uniforms are always going to be some variation on that. And the uniforms they’re modelling here appear to be the ones they will wear when they’re actually competing (as opposed to the ones for the opening and closing ceremonies), so they need to be practical. I just don’t understand what people are expecting, I guess.

I was heavily involved in Surf Life Saving when I was a kid and teenager. It was and is a fantastic sport for young kids. However I feel that the sport has lost sight of the reason why it existed in the first place.

The purpose was to Teach kids how to be safe in the surf. How to assist others who got into trouble in the surf. It was about fun and protection.

Sadly I think money has got in the way a little. In my day (approx 15-20 years ago) the National Titles moved around a lot. They weren’t at the same beaches all the time. If the surf was dangerous the events were called off or moved to a safer beach. Sure it was disappointing and a hassle at the time but at least safety came first.

I just feel that with the money involved, the sponsorship and TV interest the safety has been delegated to 2nd place. Safety is the purpose of the sport and should be the first and foremost thing in the mind of the organisers. You are taught to spot dangerous conditions in Nippers…. yet now they encourage you to go out in them anyway…. and not just go out in them but try and be the fastest and quickest. Put your speed before your safety.

Will people be a little annoyed if the event gets cancelled or moved due to surf conditions…. sure. But it is better to have annoyed people than a life lost.

Note that in this case after the death of a Matthew they have moved the event to a safer beach 15kms down the road. Why didn’t they just do this in the first place like they would have 15+ years ago?

When did one particular Surf Club become so powerful? When did the focus of surf life saving change from being about safety first?

I thought the Greer arse comment was funny at the time in the context of the show and I still do. As for Abbott, oh dearie me.

He’s a contemporary of the PM and her rival. He wants her job. He should have kept his mouth shut. I don’t care if someone asked him the question, he didn’t have to answer it. I mean, isn’t that what politicians do, sidestep questions?

I saw his weasel apology on the Today show, when he was pushed on it by Karl he was very uncomfortable and not at all genuine. How many times do we need to be shown that this man doesn’t like women?

I know that people didn’t like her saying it. I watched Greer on Q & A and I laughed out loud when she said it, as did some of the panel and audience. Before she made the arse comment she’d reeled off a load of qualities she admired in the PM. It wasn’t just “Julia, you’ve got a fat arse.”

People are going to disagree on this one, and I get that. I’m not here to defend Greer’s comment but I wasn’t bothered by it, probably because it wasn’t about my arse!

My point is that there’s a difference between Greer’s initial comment – a comment that was not made in isolation – and Abbott agreeing with it at a public event when questioned on it by a member of the public.

Does her dress style and the size of her bum truly matter? I’m not sure why it’s important to discuss it on a national political show. Good to see the NBN updates too yesterday, along with encouraging signs the Liberals are reconsidering their stance on it. When was the last really strident anti-NBN commentary come out of the mouth of anyone in the Coalition? The last dust up was the Liberals protesting the exclusion of Huawei as a vendor – if they were planning to nix the NBN, why step in for a Chinese telco?

I’m guessing they’re questioning why go so hard against something with 75% popular support, and that effectively cost them the last election (when they failed negotiations with the independents). They’ll mutter something about efficiencies, commission a report which will come back and say “Now with the changes the Liberals have made, the business case is positive” (or some other face saving device).

To be honest, if the Liberals supported the NBN, I’d not have much to worry about if they won power. Carbon tax: in. Mining tax: in. Tax cuts: in. Super increase: in. (The Coalition can’t easily roll these back without smashing the budget, so any changes will be slow or non-existant). Paid parental leave: now with bi-partisan support. Mental health package and pay rise for health carers: in.

Mr Abbott has promised not to change abortion law or coverage under medicare.

Now if Mr Abbott came out and said that they’d address and support the Gonski report as well (again, Labor: fuck you), I’d vote for them, progressive social advances be dammed (well, delayed until the next Labor government).
