julia 380x284 News: Slipper resigns as Speaker.

Julia Gillard during Question Time this afternoon

UPDATE: A tearful Peter Slipper resigned as Speaker of the Parliament following an eventful day in politics during which the opposition made a motion for him to resign.

Addressing parliament he said: “I wish to advise with great sadness, I have decided to not continue as your speaker.

“Accordingly I am having arrangements made to tender my resignation to the Governor General.”

He will not resign from Parliament.

Earlier, Mamamia reported:

It was perhaps the most extraordinarily passionate parliamentary performance of her career. Julia Gillard in parliament this afternoon was quite frankly on fire.

As part of the opposition made a motion for speaker Peter Slipper to be sacked, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said the Gillard government  is a government that detects sexism everywhere, except when it is exhibited by one of their supporters. And that this government should have died of shame.

The exact quote:

“Another day of shame for a government that should already have died of shame.” – Tony Abbott

Using the most loaded phrase in public discourse of the past two weeks – the one so controversially and repugnantly used by Alan Jones in referring to the death of Gillard’s father -  is a gob-smacking choice of words.

And it provoked the most fiery performance we have ever seen from the Prime Minister on the subject of sexism in the parliament and by Tony Abbott in particular. With her voice shaking with emotion and anger, here is some of what she said:

The government isn’t dying of shame.

My father did not die of shame.

What the Leader of the Opposition should be ashamed of is his performance in this parliament and the sexism he brings with it.

tony abbott1 380x284 News: Slipper resigns as Speaker.

Tony Abbott during Question Time this afternoon

Sexism should always unacceptable. We should conduct ourselves as if it is always unacceptable. He could change a standard himself if he sought to do so. He’s capable of double standards, but incapable of change.

I was offended when the Leader of the Opposition went outside and stood next to a sign that said ditch the witch.

Misogyny. Sexism, every day. That is all we have heard from him.

Has the Opposition leader taken any responsibility for the conduct of members of his political party? When the most vile things were being said about members of my family. He’s very light on accepting responsibility for the vile conduct of members of his political party.

I will not be lectured on misogyny by this man.

Not now.

Not ever.

Words from Prime Minister Julia Gillard during a powerful performance today during question time at Parliament House in response to the Opposition’s handling of the Peter Slipper story.

And here’s the video:

And here are some of the other news stories you may have missed today……

It was the most talked about moment of this year's Golden Globes: Jodie Foster's acceptance speech where she spoke publicly about her sexual orientation. But not everyone in the gay community is congratulating Jodie, with her speech drawing criticism for not explicitly the words "gay" or "lesbian". Fred Sainz of the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group has said "everyone watching clearly understood that she was communicating to people that she is gay. She is to be congratulated, no matter how awkward or inarticulate it may have seemed to some. It took an awful lot of courage."

Could someone please enlighten me? I think that Tony Abbott’s quote “another day of shame for a government that should already have died of shame” was an incredibly poor choice of words, but how exactly was it sexist?

The Opposition put forward nine names for Gillard to choose as Speaker. She didn’t want any of them. She knew that the Liberals had had it with Slipper and were in the process of getting rid of him. He was her choice. Another testament to her habitually appalling judgement.

Sorry, I’m appalled with both sides.

Tony Abbott needs to address many of the comments he’s made on record about women. Full stop. You want my vote — you need to explain RU486 and why you tried to block it. Because while I don’t think you’re a misogynist (I think it’s appalling people are saying that) – I do think he’s probably sexist. And he allows his Catholic beliefs to influence his political decisions.

As for the PM. Labor excel at the old fashioned smear campaign. And that’s what yesterday was about. You cannot call Tony Abbott a misogynist and then support PETER SLIPPER.

And let’s remember why Labor put Peter Slipper in as speaker in the first place. Because the PM knew she was going to reneg on the promise she made to Andrew Wilkie about poker machine reform.

Sorry. I think both sides are appalling.

Bec, it is on record that RU486 caused the death of a woman and there were grave fears for its safety. This is the reason it was suspended. Abbott fast tracked the importation of HIV drugs from the US.

If Abbott was allowing his Catholicism to impact on his ministerial decisions do you think he would have done that? The repeated RU486 misinformation is another of the ALP’s weapons that women seems too happy to believe.

As for the PM’s unhinged display today … Well, I’d be interested to know how much John McTernan is charging her to destroy the ALP and her reputation. Her tirade had no basis in fact and was completely irrelevant to what Abbott had just said. It was a wild fight for survival, the abandoning of all dignity and the untruthful smearing of an ordinary man. Gillard’s continual playing of the gender advantage is embarrassing and I cannot stand another minute of it.

    • Rosie

To ‘Guest’ – I am not sure why you are confused. Firstly, if you had watched Julia Gillard’s full speech you would have heard her condemn Peter Slipper’s email texts. Secondly, supermarket prices are increasing because Woolworths and Coles want more profits – simple as that – we live in a capitalist society. Thirdly, electricity prices are set by private electricity companies – same thing – they need profits for shareholders. Fourth – this current Government is continually passing legislation under extremely difficult circumstances -I believe over 400 bills have been passed by the Gillard Government. And surely we are over hearing that she lied about the carbon tax – that statement was made before the election created a hung Parliament. And remember Howard said there would never ever be a GST – guess who lied then?

      GD Star Rating

      • Mum of two cheeky monkeys

I think you are a bit confused Rosie. Howard originally said he wouldn’t bring it in as Paul Keating had intended it to be, (it was after all, his brainchild). The GST was taken by mandate to federal election and won. The Howard government used the introduction of the GST to significantly reduce tax across the board, thus reducing living expenses. The liberal government was in fact an excellent macro and micro economic management team. Their policies created much higher living standards for all Australians, and the GST was a huge part of that.

But that’s irrelevant anyway, since Howard is no longer leader of the opposition, and the shadow cabinet has completely changed since then, so holding Tony Abbott’s current shadow ministry to account is erroneous, successful as the policy may have been. Almost as erroneous as it is to compare the introduction of the GST by mandate to Julia Gillard ousting a prime minister for his stance on climate change, swearing she will not introduce a new tax, and then doing it anyway to save her political skin. Aside from which the tax itself it terribly flawed and will not produce the desired results.

And She did support Peter Slipper by voting for him. Calling Tony Abbot a mysoginist was bizarre within that context.

I am sorry but in no way was I better off when the John Howard was in. And could somebody please explain to me how we were better off with the GST. All we got with John Howard was very small tax cuts and no money towards infracture, education etc………….Always money in the surplus though, that was all that happened. It was never spent on the important things.

          GD Star Rating

      • Leanne

In case you had forgotten, Howard went to the people before the election to say he was going to bring it in, guess what, he won the election.

      • Mum of two cheeky monkeys

Something went wrong so I hope this doesn’t come up twice.

Howard originally said he wouldn’t introduce the GST as it was put forward by Keating. During his first term he outlined a proposal for how he would introduce the GST. It was put to mandate and won at federal election. That means the public voted for it. As a result income tax was significantly reduced under the Howard government, and living standards were increased enormously for all Australians, (not to mention the great platform set for the GFC and an enormous surplus for further spending on Australian citizens).

But giving Abbott credit for this, or holding him to account for the GST, is irrelevant since the entire shadow cabinet has since changed, as has the leader of the LNP and the treasurer. And comparing it to Julia Gillard ousting a prime minister based on his stance for a carbon tax, swearing not to introduce it and then doing it to strike a deal to save her neck, despite its overwhelming unpopularity – well, repectfully, that is a very long and windy bow to draw.

As for Peter Slipper, Gillard supported him by not asking for his resignation, then by voting to save his neck. Calling Abbott a mysoginist was smoke and mirrors, and based on most of the coverage was a huge error in judgement.

I think its great that finally the sexism that is present in so many areas of life, not just Politics, is being addressed.
it doesn’t matter where you go, From politics and high powered businesses right down to the sporting field there is sexism. If I was to get a dollar for every time a man ignored my advice in my professional field despite being uneducated on the matter, I would be a rich woman.
that isn’t to say that I agree with everything the prime minister stands for, I’m certainly not, but it is an issue that needs to be fixed, women and men are equally and capable hence should be treated that way.
it infuriates me that when I hear the majority of people complaining about the PM they focus more on her gender than her policies

It’s great that the PM has condemned Slipper’s texts. However, in reality it’s a hollow move because she won’t move to have him resign as an MP (which is what many members of the public believe is appropriate in the circumstances). She needs the support of Slipper (and/or Craig Thompson who sits as an independent but votes with the Government) in order to govern. If she was to push for Slipper to leave, it would trigger an election in his electorate that Mal Brough (LNP) is widely thought to win. I think that’s why her position re Slipper has been criticised so much. She needs him in order to continue to hold power but can’t or won’t be open about that and so is tacitly supporting him.

Well in the real world, away from Mamamia, the commentary is that the biggest political loser today was Julia Gillard. Her performance is being considered a bit of self-serving misjudgement. She is no feminist hero. She was fighting for her political life. She wasn’t fighting for the poor or the homeless or the women of tomorrow. Her polls are down and she is under pressure. Wowsie wowsa what a day. The Q and A debacle, Julia’s speech and now the Speaker resigns. I’m amazed I got any work done.

I loved the PM’s speech in QT today. I think it is about time she (or anyone) called Mr Abbott out on his hypocrisy in his views on women.

Not having heard exactly what Mr Slipper said in his text messages, I’m proceeding with caution here: I don’t condone cruel, nasty or derogatory references to female or male genitalia by anyone. I do think there is a lot to the Slipper/Ashby story that we will probably never find out.

I’m mostly disappointed that Julia’s fabulous and necessary speech had to delivered in the context of dealing with the Peter Slipper issue. What she said needed to be said. But now it will get lost and possibly even invalidated in the fallout of his resignation.

Feminism is the equal treatment if women. Julia gillard does feminism a disservice by crying sexism every time she is treated in exactly the same way as any other politician, male or female.

It was arrogant to call Abbott a mysogynist minutes after backing a man that has sent incredibly sexist texts and is under investigation for unlawful acts of sexual harassment. It is arrogant to suggest anyone that questions her fragile credibility and track record of invomprtence is sexist. It means the opposition can’t keep the government honest, (which I believe is there job), by questioning her policies- every time they do leftist media calls sexism. That in itself is sexist, in my opinion.

Wouldn’t it be a fantastic example for young girls if our first female pm was able to make a platform purely based on her policies, rather than criticizing any naysayers and dismissing them as anti-feminist?

Abbott said after the performance that he’d forgotten Alan Jones had used those words. Turnbull for Opposition Leader, maybe even PM.

Abbott might not believe that my three daughters deserve the same opportunities as my son, he may lack any common decency, but let me tell Mr Abbott that if one of my daughters became Prime Minister, I’d DIE OF PRIDE.

          That’s no surprise at all.

Considering the Greens are openly discussing if they’d preference a Turnbull-led Coalition over a Gillard-led Labor, it is very easy to understand Turnbull’s appeal to Labor value voters. He’s a progressive social, pro-climate change action and economic conservative.

And considering preferences of the Greens were worth 11% points to Labor in the 2010 two party preferred result, the Liberals must realise they have a chance to cement in a mutil-decade tilt at running the country (even if they only got half of the Green votes)!

Unless they stick with Abbott, of course.

Labor is edging closer and closer to their 2010 primary vote (well, more a two steps forward, one step back) and the reason is clear: people don’t trust Abbott. Someone in the Liberal party must be crunching numbers.

Sure, with Abbott they’d likely win in 2013, but it’ll be close and considering Abbott’s unpopularity when he’s not in charge, who knows what’d happen by the 2016 election.

My comment is fair. All the instances that were brought up in the video were from when Tony Abbot was a minister and the reference to ironing remarks indicates that you have watched the video. Did you miss the part where Abbott said he thought men were better suited “by physiology or temperament more adapted to exercise authority or issue command”. That illustrates a belief that men are, by virtue of being born male, more competent and entitled to hold positions of power. That is textbook sexism.

I am not being unfair when I point out that very good examples of sexism have been diminished and overlooked.

Controversial conspiracy theory, but here goes…

I wouldn’t at all be surprised if TA’s advisors had done their homework and determined that, (and I say this without endorsing them at all), Alan Jones’s comments resonated with some sector of society that the liberal party needs to sure up. (The comments were awful, I don’t condone them, I am making an observation). His program is the highest rating show in Sydney, and those are lots of valuable votes. And largely, his followers applauded the sentiment, (perhaps not the comments themselves).

So it wouldn’t at all surprise me if they think that an abstract reference to the comments would solidify the listener’s own dissatisfaction with the PM.

Or, Abbott hasn’t adjusted since the comments were made and since he has repeatedly used the phrase, “Labor party is dying of shame” he just dropped it in again. As politicians are want to do. just as Julia continually plays the sexist card.

Abbott isn’t stupid. He’s actually incredibly intelligent, (as is Gillard), although he does have trouble with foot in mouth disease sometimes. Just a few musings.

I’m baffled, people surely can’t be admiring the PM’s performance in defending a man like Peter Slipper to save her own neck. She’s already protecting and manipulating things to keep Craig Thompson on side.

Also, I’m so embarrassed by Gillard and the other women in her team, screaming sexism to avoid answering serious questions about their performance. Not a good look for any professional woman, let alone the PM. Easy to shut down an argument by screaming that’s sexist and you hate women, that’ll shut up the man questioning your performance because where can he go from there.

I just don’t get how she has any support left.

She, the ALP, Independanats and Greens have voted to keep this man in the position of Speaker of OUR Parliament. This is a new low for this Government. The worst in the history of this Nation, all presided over by a woman.

By voting to keep Slipper on as Speaker. By doing so she has acknowledged that it’s ok to refer to a woman’s vagina as a “mussel without a shell”.

The whole performance today by the PM, and her female ministers, highlighted their hypocrisy by defending and protecting the job of a true mysoginist.

It was a debate about slipper stepping down. And, as Charlie just said on the Project, amazingly Slipper survived, Julia played the victim and Abbott played into her hands…. The vote to keep Slipper was 69 to 70 so Slipper gets to continue to represent us as the Governments Speaker, that’s just awesome.

Hypocrisy on the part of the Government much?

Saying that he should be kept there until the court case about him follows it’s due course and defending someone are pretty different actions, Anon1, Anon2 and Sue. There was absolutely no defence of the guy.

She did prove sexism…she read transcripts from Tony Abbott’s time as minister where he said awful things about the status of women in society. ‘Screaming sexism’, really? ‘Not a good look for a professional woman’, REALLY?
I’m so sorry; I thought I was living in 2012. I’ve been transported back to the dark ages. No woman screams sexism to shut down an argument, and I seriously doubt the Prime Minister would resort to such measures. The woman is more educated than most, I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt, her need to scream sexism as some sort of defence…to suggest otherwise is exactly to disempower women. As if unequal pay, rude and derogatory marks aren’t enough, Julia should be yelling it from the rooftops.
      girl power.

Well, I’m embarrassed by the women in Tony’s team, (Bishop, etc, and *especially* Concetta Fierrevanti-Wells) for assuming they speak for all women, and defending Tony Abbott.

Perhaps you should be embarrassed by the fact that the only Liberal with any common sense, decency, and real world experience is Malcolm Turnbull, and the sycophantic supporters hate him.

Are you serious? Did you see Kate Ellis on QandA last night trying to answer questions while being systematically howled down, taunted and interrupted by a few loud mouth right-wingers? She didn’t shout sexism or sook- she kept answering the questions asked of her and rose above those who tried to shut her up as though she were a silly girl, in a way they would never have done to a man.

He must be getting bad advice. It baffles me, just baffles me how he thought it would be a good decision to use that turn of phrase. It’s also very very arrogant. No body wants that kind of glass ceiling as our next prime minister!

I honestly think it was unintentional, another classic example of Abbott saying something stupid because his internal editor is always a few seconds slow.

And yet she continues to defend Slipper, or that’s right she needs him and Craig Thompson to keep her job. So she’s only offended by sexism if it’s from the other side.

Abbott’s choice of words were stupid but I’m so over Gillard screaming sexism and misogyny to deflect from anyone questioning her performance, appalling behavior and I feel one which damages feminism.

What Slipper did was gross, but not sexist. Sexism is believing one sex to be superior to another, not a dirty joke. Tony Abbott frequently says and does things that are sexist and I’m glad Julia has finally called him out on it.

This is, without a doubt, THE MOST BRILLIANT THING EVER IN THE HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA. I jumped up and did laps around the living room when I first watched it. She is passionate, articulate, authentic, and spectacularly talented in this arena.

What a roller coaster month it has been for women in Australia and for the political and social debate on feminism.
