Welcome to Mamamia’s regular news-in-pictures post. It’s the news in a nutshell. We’ll bring you the major news when it breaks.
The key images. The important details. Right here.

It was the most talked about moment of this year's Golden Globes: Jodie Foster's acceptance speech where she spoke publicly about her sexual orientation. But not everyone in the gay community is congratulating Jodie, with her speech drawing criticism for not explicitly the words "gay" or "lesbian". Fred Sainz of the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group has said "everyone watching clearly understood that she was communicating to people that she is gay. She is to be congratulated, no matter how awkward or inarticulate it may have seemed to some. It took an awful lot of courage."

Re pic 43.
Liquid nitrogen is not dry ice. For a start it’s a liquid, and dry ice is a solid, and dry ice is frozen Carbon Dioxide. Carbon Dioxide does not have a liquid form, it sublimes from a solid directly to a gaseous state.
Here endeth the year 8 science lesson.

I lost my virginity to a complete deads**t who reckoned he was hot s**t. Good on her for raising that sort of money for charity. What puzzles me is the mindset of someone who’d pay that money just to be someone’s ‘first’. Is it so she won’t know what a dud he is?
loading...
If she wants to sell her virginity and someone is willing to pay $780,000 for it….she gets the better end of the bargain.
The fact that she is willing to donate the money to charity deserves respect.
No one is forcing anyone to do anything that they don’t wish to willingly participate in. Their business, no one else’s.
loading...
Actually it is everybody else’s as there’s a film being made about it.
loading...
Considering I lost my virginity to a complete douche, $780,000 would have made the experience a whole lot nicer.
loading...
Does anyone else see Lance Armstrong and think of Richard Roxburgh straight away (you know, the guy from Rake)? If there’s a movie made about him, I reckon he’s a shoe-in to play Armstrong!
loading...
Richard is much hotter by far!
loading...
….and cleaner !
loading...
I’m not very interested in sport so don’t normally have an emotional reaction to drug cheats. But if Lance Armstrong is guilty – and it looks like he is – I’m really disappointed by it. I know a lot of people are saying doping was rife so he’s still the greatest cyclist, and that may be so. But all those years of flatly denying the accusations and perpetuating his own hero status – which was an inspiration to many including myself – has left a really bad taste in my mouth.
loading...
He was probably still the fastest in a field of drug cheats if that makes you feel any better.
loading...
Aarrggghhh re the cut to private health rebate. It was always going to happen eventually, but frustrating nonetheless. Let’s see how they work out the cut…
loading...
Baby Bonus Cut. Oh, misogynists you mean??
loading...
Made me ROFL1!
loading...
Wow ! The position on the Security Council only cost $24 million. Or if you prefer……..$12 million a year.
Bargain ???
loading...
It’s cheaper than the Melbourne Grand Prix or a Olympic Games bid.
loading...
Can anyone tell me why it costs that much money? What do they have to do to bid? t have to build stadiums or transport infrastructure. That’s a lot of 5 star hotels and first class plane travel.
loading...
Bradley, the stupid V8 racing on the Gold Coast in QLD gets 6mil per year! It used to get 13mil per year. I’d rather have a seat on the security council to try to influence security in our region (because we have some rather insecure nations sitting on top of us) than a stupid car race every year. If this was the Libs who’d won this, your commentary would be very different I’m sure.
loading...
hate to tell you bradley but that is less than what howard spent on his attempt, and he failed!
money well spent.
loading...
Did I forget to mention that I’m not a fan of motor racing ?
loading...
What was the article that links stillbirth to sleeping position? I’d like to read it. Hope someone can help! xx
loading...
Surprised to see it’s girls. Isn’t Father F the one who molested altar boys?
loading...
I posted a comment on this the other day, but it must have ended up in the spam filter, so I’ll try again.
I’m finding it frustrating that when I click on the news post, and then scroll through the comments, there are old comments (going back to 10th October) that make absolutely no sense to the news post of the day. Why don’t you remove them? Or start a new news thread each day?
loading...
Would like to ‘like’ this comment. But can’t see the like button.
I posted a comment about the Brad Pitt Chanel no 5 ad saying he looked like a dick, but it didn’t appear. Just wondering if this was moderated or went to the spam folder? I felt it was pretty harmless.

I cannot cannot believe the Macquarie Dictionary are altering the definition of misogyny. Entrenched prejudice against women is ….. SEXISM!
*face palm*
loading...
Wouldn’t sexism be better defined as a form of discrimination rather than prejudice?
loading...
I would never own a Macquarie dictionary. It’s substandard. If we wish to change the meaning, we should not obliterate the first meaning but keep the original meaning as primary and add the new meaning as a secondary meaning. This is how a really good lexicon should work.
loading...
The report I read said that is exactly what they are doing.
loading...
Then they are not actually changing the meaning then, are they. So why are we making a fuss?
loading...
Mamamia team, can we have an article about the world’s worst internet troll MIchael Brutsch? Surely someone like Melinda Tankard Reist has been covering it.
From what I’ve read he is a vile pedophile that was allowed to get away with the most disgusting things on Reddit because he knew some one high up in the organisation, he helped moderate on the site occasionally and he blatantly exploited their free speech ethos.
And we wonder why the Amanda Todd’s of the world get targeted and victimized so easily. It is because of men like Mr Brutsch!! There is a clear connection between the two.
I do not give one second of sympathy to a man that will most likely lose everything now because of his sick and twisted fantasies involving innocent, underage girls photographed often without their knowledge or their will.
loading...
Did they change the definition is misandry at the same time? Let me guess, um, no, lol, surprise.
loading...
So what does sexism mean?
loading...
It had to happen !
Now…to suit those who have been using the “M” word incorrectly…..we change the meaning of the word.
I’d say that it’s a bloody joke but for the fact that it isn’t funny.
Anyone recall the tiff on Q&A between Jones and Shorten over this issue ? Move the goalposts. Change the rules. It’s my bat and ball, and all that.
loading...
Those people over at Macquarie are probably all a bunch of “lefties” as well! ;
loading...
Remember….you said it.
loading...
Lol….
loading...
A misogynist will also be a sexist but a sexist may not necessarily be a misogynist……….um, I think that’s right.
Some men love women in their life, just as we women love men in our life…….we also love the men in our life – most of them.
Some men need to know that even if he’s not the “Boss of someone” – at least he’s the “boss of women” – ALL women……..I guess that’s a sexist.
A misogynist just hates women deeply………sometimes he’ll side with a group of other men who’s hate equals his.
Best thing to do is just observe them as if they’re in a rather unpleasant play………that’s the one where you just get up and leave before interval…lol.
loading...
‘an entrenched prejudice against women’
So misogyny is interchangeable with sexism now. Great. All the power that word carries is gone then.
loading...
What Anonymous said plus. I’m a linguist and this sort of thing makes me greatly indignant. It means that in effect we are removing the concept of hatred for women out of the language exceptomebody who is familiar with Greek. Macquarie Dictionary is notorious for bad moves like this and I never use this dictionary. It’s appalling. It would be better to make up another word rather than change it – its root is the Greek verb ‘misein’ (to hate), and that’s just what misogyny is – hatred not prejudice.
loading...
Ali, as a linguist you should know that language changes over time. It’s a natural progression. Does our language look anything like it did in Shakespeare’s day? Whether it’s ‘right’ or not, I think it’s an impossible fight.
loading...
I was going to write exactly the same thing. Language is about communication and is always changing, isn’t it?
loading...
Language changes via usage of slang and colloquial terms.
ie sick still means sick although used as slang, it can mean something absolutely fantastic or great.
loading...
That’s what I’m sayin’
loading...
Point taken. Language is determined by usage and new translations are required approximately every 60 years. But you can’t change woman-hatred by changing the language. I refer you to my recent post.
loading...
I don’t think they are interchangeable, the definitions seem pretty clear to me.
Sexist: Telling a blond joke
Misogyny: Not giving jobs to women because ‘men work harder’.
But not sure what the word for someone who ‘hates’ women is now.
loading...
Just a quick technical correction, don’t know if anyone else has said this…
Liquid nitrogen is not the same thing as dry ice. Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide that evaporates directly to gas without passing through a liquid phase at room temperature and pressure. It would be impossible to drink. It’s the thing that’s used to make fog in stage shows, for example. Liquid nitrogen must be kept in pressurised containers to remain as liquid, and will quickly evaporate to a gas once released. The main dangers are that it is *very* cold, and when evaporating will expand, displacing oxygen. So it should not be put in a confined space with people e.g. a lift – or a stomach. The issue here would simply be not enough time lag between pouring and drinking, for whatever reason.
loading...
I’m a huge cycling fan and after many years of denial I am gutted. The fact that it was so prolific and premeditated more than anything. What is sad the most is that the sport will suffer.
Another thing I take issue with is people who have no knowledge of cycling or the Armstrong case who are making comments here. Yes, it is fine to have an opinion, but please in a matter such as this it does need to be an informed one.
loading...
The more he denies it, the worse he looks. I know he’s done a great deal for cancer charities and raised millions, no one denies that, but so have a lot of other people. This is about being an athlete who has won many events by using performance enhancing drugs. By cheating. He is a cheat. It’s that simple.
loading...
Are you a cheat if everyone is a cheat? Well, yes, but in this case, I like the idea posted elsewhere that those years of the Tour de France should be left without a winner.
loading...
I think it best to consult a dictionary for the latest definition of the word “cheat”.
It could now mean anything !
loading...
I know how important sport is, however, watching Four Corners last night I was struck by the thought that if all the money spent on testing and researching new ways to find the banned substances (in athletes) was spent on Cancer research, there would surely be a cure by now!!
loading...
Several years ago Lance Armstrong wrote a memoir called “It’s Not About The Bike”.
How fitting.
loading...
This lead me to the question – If, as it appears, they were all taking performance enhancing drugs, did that make it a level playing field?
My other thought was, where there is money there is corruption.
loading...
So true. I have heard the sport is riddled with cyclists on the juice. Although apparently Cadel Evans is 100% clean and has offered to take a lie detector test to prove it. And I believe that. So yay for him!
But yes — where this is money, corruption often follows. Absolutely.
loading...
Bec, ‘riddled’ is the right word. Lance’s 7 Tour De France titles have been taken away from him, but will probably not be given to anyone else – mainly because *so many* of the people who came 2nd/ 3rd / etc have also tested positive.
loading...
It’s a fantastic book and I’m sure I’m not the only person who is devastated about this.
loading...
Did you enjoy it Kris? I read it (admittedly 8 years ago now) as part of my year 12 curriculum. I found him to be self-absorbed, self-centered and particularly arrogant. Upon finishing his book, I almost despised him (as much as you can someone you’ve never met) and didn’t actually admire him at all.
Now, obviously, he has done a lot for cancer research etc. but I feel that he still did this with an ulterior motive (of publicity). I guess I’m just cynical about him now….
loading...
Yep, I loved it. It’s his story, and he has achieved so much (assisted or not) and that’s why I’m devastated. Although, I kind of go, well, it was a level playing field if that was the only way they felt they could achieve anything.
loading...
Funding for our troops is the lowest in 25 years. Gillard has ripped the guts out of it. She’s also responsible for the arrival of 22000 undocumented arrivals from countries that are rife with terrorism. So, while these troops are risking their lives, this PM has opened our borders.
I hope MM has been reading Paul Sheehan’s articles. It says it all, really.
I’d be hiding in Afghanistan too if I’d disgraced myself as she did the other day.
loading...
Sheehan’s articles are OPINION. Please stop confusing news with opinion

Yep, she goes over and personally escorts all the refugees back. How about the refusal of the opposition to agree on ANY solution because of all the political point scoring available because of it?
loading...
He is free falling nearly as quickly as Lance Armstrong.
loading...
That freefall was crazy! I don’t know what would possess someone to do that but I’m so happy others are much more brave than I. What an amazing feat.
loading...
The information in this isn’t showing up on iPhone 4. Just the pics. Can you post it as an article?
loading...
20 years ago we were advised not to sleep on our backs while pregnant!
loading...
How can pregnant women sleep on their backs anyway? I can’t even sleep on my back when I’m not pregnant!
loading...
Oh fantastic. Now pregnant women get to feel guilty about things they do when they’re NOT EVEN CONSCIOUS!! Can’t wait for the study that tells us that we are endangering the life of our foetus by breathing.

Malala Yousufzai’s story breaks my heart but absolutely blows me away. Imagine being 14 and having the balls to fight against the Taliban. If that’s what she’s capable of as a teenager, imagine what she could achieve as a grown woman? Losing her would be a loss to humanity. Sending her and her family love and strength.

“Sandra Lee @FitToPrint

Paul Sheehan? This is me over here, dying of not-surprise.

Pingback: An Apology To Paul Sheehan | A Baffling Ordeal
Critics accused the minister of lying regarding the "hand-shaking incident" and bringing shame to the mainly Muslim country, which President Barack Obama held up as a model of tolerance and diversity during his brief visit this week.
The first lady became the unwitting focus of an online debate over religious tolerance and women’s rights when Communications Minister Tifatul Sembiring messaged his thousands of Twitter followers that he had reluctantly shaken hands with her at a formal reception on Tuesday.
Sembiring is a conservative Muslim who refuses to touch women he is not related to, and has previously outraged liberal society by suggesting AIDS funding is a waste of public money and linking natural disasters to immorality.
"I tried to prevent (touching First Lady Obama) with my two hands, but Mrs Michelle moved her hands too close to me, then we touched," he tweeted on Tuesday, sparking a firestorm on the hyperactive Indonesian blogosphere.
Video footage of the meeting suggested otherwise, showing Sembiring reaching out to shake Michelle’s hand, as the other dignitaries had done.
Rather than call a press conference to face the media in person, Sembiring defended his beliefs by posting comments on Twitter and Facebook on Thursday.
"I still stand by the position that I will not shake hands with women who are not related to me," he wrote in a series of 14 numbered tweets to his 110,000 followers.
He added that "some situations happen suddenly, or I meet people who don’t have any idea about my beliefs".
"Usually in state-related events, or sometimes after praying, there are ladies who scramble to shake hands."
He claimed that his encounter with Michelle Obama was such a moment, even though they met as she followed her husband down a long line of assembled officials, shaking hands with each in turn.
"I offered my two hands in a Sundanese-style greeting (held together as if in prayer)…. And then the hand-shaking incident occurred," he explained.
Most Twitter users were scathing in their condemnation of the minister.
"Of course, the communications minister is stupid, naive and inconsistent," wrote one.
"It wasn’t about shaking hands. It’s the lying!!!!" wrote another.
One user wrote: "He’s just embarrassing."

I sincerely hope young Malala recovers well and is safe from future harm.
loading...
The poor girl, sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live in such an amazing country with the right to free speech..this poor girl won’t ever be able to know what that feels like, it just breaks my heart
loading...
People are so disgusting
loading...
If only more people stood up for what they believed in. This is a moment that I forget we don’t all have the liberty of free speech in the world. Whacks me straight back to reality… saddened by the loss of this beautiful young woman.
loading...
Hi Jells, just thought I’d point out that she is still alive.
loading...
Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide, not liquid nitrogen.
loading...
Scared of a 14 year old girl so they shot her. Words fail me.
loading...
The shooting of Malala is terrible news. What a brave young woman! And here I am listening to my 16 y o complain about not wanting to get a job on the weekend because it will interfere with her social life.
loading...
Yes, big brave taliban men shooting a girl who wants other girls to be able to read.
loading...
I so desperately don’t want to ever have any hatred, but when I hear of this kind of attack, I have to work very hard inwardly to not hate. I don’t know of any harder work oh god.

Hi Mia,
Just a comment on your article in the Sundy Mail 7/10/12. Having never experienced either a miscarriage or still birth I can only imagine how devasting
it must be for the family.
My mother experienced 2 still births and had another where her son lived only
1 week. She died at the age of 88 without having any closure on this. There were no support systems in place as there is now. Women were expected to just get on with their lives.
Another comment whilst these support systems are in place for parents who lose young children and babies. There is little support for parents that lose adult children. What are these parents expected to do? They experience the
same grief as others.
