“I’m an actress and she’s the real deal.”

They’re the words of Meryl Streep in her tribute to US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, at the 2012 Women in the World summit in New York.

She talks about the “hidden history” of Hillary Clinton. About how Hillary has been the voice of her generation;  her role as the voice of women around the world; and about the strength of her belief that “women’s rights are human rights.”

It’s powerful.

Clinton later thanked Streep for the introduction and joked she was happy the actress ‘didn’t do a movie called “The Devil Wears Pantsuits”‘.

Meryl Streep gave birth at home – she understands ‘women’s right are human rights’. What a beautiful role model!

How wonderful to ‘see’ Hilary without the filter of Bill; to hear of her accomplishments and the hope and empowerment she’s been able to give so many women and communities around the world.

She’s not perfect, and not everything she does or has done is completely admirable, but that’s the nature of politics as much as anything… I think she’d be a fascinating person to meet, and I have enormous respect for her fearlessness, tenacity, intelligence and compassion. (And don’t you just want to go out for a long lunch somewhere with Meryl?!!)

A few years ago I read Hilary Clinton’s autobiography “Living History”. I then tried to read her husband’s celebrated and highly promoted autobiography. Without wanting to take anything away from Bill, Hillary’s book was a beacon – a light, a goal, I wanted to aim towards. She is truly inspirational. If I can achieve a fraction of what she has achieved for women and children, I will be happy…but I will keep striving for more.

I agree with Meryl, Hilary Clinton is incredible. She is the role model we should be looking to and teaching our daughters about.
