In a tragic turn of events, a mother of four has been arrested for the murder of three of her children.

The events took place in south London yesterday.

The mother, Tania Clarence, 42, was arrested on suspicion of murdering her three disabled children –  three-year-old twins, Ben and Max, and their sister Olivia, four.

Reports are that the three children had spinal muscular atrophy, which left Olivia in a wheelchair and the two boys barely able to move. The children needed constant care and attention.

Her fourth child, an eight-year-old girl does not suffer the condition.

The alleged murders took place in their family home widely quoted in the British press as being “exclusive” and worth over £1.5million.

The children’s father, Gary Clarence, a prominent investment banker was away in South Africa at the time of the children’s deaths.

According to the Evening Standard, Mrs Clarence found out that her daughter suffered the genetic condition when she was pregnant with her twin boys.

“They realised their daughter was not developing properly and then discovered this awful genetic condition,” a friend told the Evening Standard.

“The twins could not function at all. They had no muscle strength whatsoever. It was so devastating.”

Neighbours say they were a lovely family

Her life was just so difficult. Always having different carers in and out of the house, transforming everything to make it accessible for wheelchairs. It was just so much to cope with.”

The Daily Mail reports that the family were well liked in the area with neighbours saying they were a lovely couple.

“I saw them all the time about with their children,” one said.

“They are very nice people and very, very decent. She is such a lovely person -her life revolves around the children.”

In children with severe spinal muscular atrophy, fatal respiratory problems often develop which means they never live past their teenage years.
