1. More details are emerging on the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp. Police have now revealed they recovered a blood-spattered cricket bat from Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius’ home where the murder took place. One source said: “There was lots of blood on the bat.” The details have put to bed any suggestion that Steencamp’s death was accidental.

2. There’s a new poll out this morning and the numbers aren’t good for the Labor party. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has taken the lead as preferred Prime Minister for the first time in 7 months, leading at 49 per cent to Julia Gillard‘s 45 per cent. Labor’s primary vote has plunged 5 points to 30 per cent, while the Coalition’s primary vote has risen to 47 per cent. Meanwhile, over the weekend, Kevin Rudd again denied he was planning a return to the top job.

3. The Australian Women’s cricket team has won the Cricket World Cup. The Southern Stars beat the West Indies by 114 runs. It’s the sixth time the team has won the cup.

4. A news study has revealed that almost three quarters of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. The study, which looked at the results of 20,000 mammograms over 20 years, is being used as a reminder for women to get regular checks. “This is important because most women are listening to the information around family history and going, ‘it’s not in my family, therefore I don’t need to worry’,”the chief executive of Breast Screen Victoria said.

5. After being deported from Malaysia over the weekend, Senator Nick Xenophon says he doesn’t understand why he is considered an “enemy” of the Malaysian state. Xenophon was travelling to Malaysia to meet with pro-democracy leaders – but he never made it past airport security. He said he believed the Prime Minister of Mayalsia, Najib Razak, ordered his deportation.

6. Around 3500 couples got married at a mass wedding at a giant sport stadium in South Korea over the weekend. They were all members of the Unification Church – and apparently some couples had only met days earlier. Another 24,000 around the world also got married via video link.

7. The 18-year-old British Backpacker who got lost in the Australian outback and survived by drinking contact lense solution and his own urine has reportedly sold his story to the media back home. But Sam Woodhead says all the money he raises will be given back to the Australian search and rescue authorities who helped find him in the 40-degree heat.

8. There have been reports a 6-year-old Indian girl was abducted from her home and raped. The girl was found by a passing motorist on a road in the city of Gurgaon and she’s now in a critical condition. It’s believed there was more than one attacker.
