With his wispy dark hair, tiny pink fingers and his slow-blinking brown eyes, two-day-old Pablo Hernandez is absolutely perfect.

But what makes Pablo particularly special is that his parents, Maria Herrara and Andres Hernandez, came frighteningly close to never meeting him.

They’d endured eight miscarriages and seven rounds of IVF over six heartbreaking years — and when Maria finally fell pregnant with Pablo, she almost had to deliver him at only 21 weeks, when he would not have survived.

Maria has a condition called “cervical incompetence”, where the uterus begins to prematurely dilate and thin — and when she began to go into labour only halfway through her pregnancy, she had to undergo emergency surgery followed by weeks of bed rest, involving lying on her back with raised legs.

The 36-year-old Melbourne woman, forced to stay in bed even to eat and bathe, developed gestational diabetes and took 20 pills a day — but she was spurred on by ultrasound images of her unborn son, dozens of which Andre had stuck next to his wife’s hospital bed.

Andre also slept on the floor next to her bed as they counted every day, as their baby slowly grew, Fairfax Media reports.

It was an arduous and emotional pregnancy — but as Maria told Fairfax: “I would do it again, I would do it all again.”

Little Pablo was finally delivered by caesarian section on Tuesday at St Vincent’s Private hospital in Melbourne — four weeks early, but in perfect health and weighing 2.8 kilograms.

His parents couldn’t be more delighted.

“He’s beautiful. He’s perfect,” Maria told 7 News.

“We couldn’t ask for more; it’s a baby miracle.”

The couple, who moved to Melbourne from Colombia six years ago, have not ruled out trying for a brother or sister for little  Pablo, 7 News reports.

St Vincents Private posted a photo of the happy family on Facebook yesterday, writing “Welcome to the world baby Pablo, we are so thrilled to see you arrive safely.”
