1. Michael Schumacher

Seven time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher remains in a critical condition after a skiing accident in France has left him ‘fighting for his life’.

Doctors who have been treating Schumacher said at a news conference that it was too early to say what the driver’s prognosis might be and that they cannot guarantee his recovery.

The driver remains in a critical condition in hospital in Grenoble with head injuries suffered on Sunday morning at the resort of Meribel.

His family are at his bedside.

Schumacher underwent surgery on arrival at the University Hospital. He remains in a coma and the medical team treating him said that they are working “hour by hour”.

2. TC Christine

Tropical cyclone Christine is battering the Pilbara coast, forcing people to take shelter as it brings strong winds, heavy rain and dangerous storm tides.

The Category 3 storm crossed the coast overnight with wind gusts of 200km/h expected near its centre.

The Bureau of Meteorology said at 1am (WST) Christine was estimated to be 150km west southwest of Port Hedland and 50km east southeast of Karratha and moving southwest at 16km/h.

It’s expected to take a more southerly track during the early hours of today.

3. Missing father–of-three found dead

In devastating news missing father-of three Nick Eade has been found dead at Manly beach in Sydney.

The 37-year left his family home on the morning of November 26 to head to work as a producer on Channel 7’s Fast Ed cooking show.

He last contacted his wife, Trish Heagerty, that afternoon via text message to say he would be home late, signing off: “Love you heaps xx”.

Police were called to the beach about 5pm on Sunday after a member of the public found the body.

Police do not believe the death was suspicious.

4. WHO to act on sugar

The World Health Organisation is considering radically changing its recommendations on sugar intake.

5. Russian ship

Passengers and some crew on a ship stuck in thick ice in Antarctica are to be taken off by helicopter once the weather permits, Russian officials say.

News of the decision came after the Australian icebreaker, Aurora Australis had to turn back.

The Russian-flagged research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy has been stuck in ice for nearly a week. It is carrying 74 scientists, tourists and crew.

6. Dental scheme starts tomorrow

A new medicare dental scheme launches tomorrow which will provide 3.5 million children whose families receive family Tax Benefit A with up to up to $1000 worth of dental care every two years.

However, according to the Australian Dental Association some parents may be better off claiming their child’s dental bills under private health insurance as they face out-of-pocket expenses of as much as 20 per cent of the fee under the new Medicare scheme.

7. Second Russian bomb

Yesterday’s suicide bombing at Volgograd’s central train station which killed 17 people was swiftly followed by a second attack on a trolleybus, where 10 people were reported dead.

It has cast doubts on the safety of Australian athletes competing at the Sochi Winter Olympics in February

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told The Australian last night authorities would work closely with their Russian counterparts and with Australian officials in Russia to assess the situation before a decision was made as to whether the team would still attend the event.

8. Park tragedy

A four-year old girl was killed by a huge tree limb which fell on her in a park in Bendigo yesterday. Her mother received a fractured leg, head injuries and a possible spinal injury.

9. Missing teenager

A Sydney teenager is missing with police fearing for his safety.

Justin Painter was last seen at his house in the Sydney suburb of Mosman on Sunday and the 15-year-old has not made contact with friends or family since.

His disappearance is said to be out of character.

10. Teen sensation angers fans

Vine celebrity Nash Grier has caused a viral backlash after his video telling his young female audience “what guys look for in girls” backfired in a major way.

In the nine-minute long segment, the boys describe their ideal girl but go on to say what they don’t like in girls. At one point saying girls who don’t shave their facial and body hair are “gross.”

11. Food guilt

A study has shown that nearly half of women say that they feel guilty about eating carbohydrates, despite their essential role in a healthy diet.

Women were about twice as likely as men to suffer from “carb guilt”, even though they were more likely to be a healthy weight.
