Comedian Magda Szubanski comes out for same sex marriage
One of the darlings of the Australian comedy scene has revealed she is gay while offering her support for same sex marriage. Magda Szubanski, the Kath and Kim and Full Frontal star, said it was high time rights were afforded to all. “We pay taxes, fight wars for this country, nurse you when you are sick, make you laugh, sing and dance for you, play netball for you, star in your movies, cook your meals, decorate your store windows. And, chances are, gay people designed whatever it is you’re wearing. All Australians, including gay Australians, should have exactly the same rights, including the right to love, marry and take care of our partners. The law as it stands means that you could be a serial killer and have killed all of your spouses and yet you would still be considered fit to marry.”
Sony jacks price of Whitney album 60% hours after death
One of the biggest money-spinners is death, it seems. Pop stars who pass away earn a fortune in death and Sony Records knows it. They inflated the price of Houston’s The Ultimate Collection album, released in 1997, by 60 per cent to $11.73. Sony says it was just fixing a wholesale price error. The price adjustment flowed on to iTunes but, as Fairfax reported: Apple quickly – and quietly – returned the album to its original price late Sunday and by Monday it was the second-highest selling album on iTunes amid a global outpouring of grief in the music industry. The singer’s death also proved a sudden boost for The Grammy Awards broadcast on Monday, with US broadcaster CBS reporting preliminary estimates of the show’s ratings were the highest recorded in more than 20 years. More than 39 million viewers watched the three-and-a-half hour broadcast, up 41 per cent from last year’s broadcast and the highest ratings since 1984, when 43.9 million tuned in to watch Michael Jackson take out a number of awards.
Apple faces its factory cruelty problem. Sort of.
The tech giant Apple, which makes snazzy gadgets like the iPhone and iPad, finally looks to be facing up to the fact its products are made in oppressive factories in China, on the cheap. Of course Apple isn’t alone among the technology companies with this problem, but under Steve Jobs it was generally ignored. Apple CEO Tim Cook asked the Fair Labour Association (FLA) to do an assessment of its suppliers in places like China. “We believe that workers everywhere have the right to a safe and fair work environment, which is why we’ve asked the FLA to independently assess the performance of our largest suppliers. The inspections now underway are unprecedented in the electronics industry, both in scale and scope. Apple said the FLA will: “…interview thousands of employees about working and living conditions including health and safety, compensation, working hours and communication with management. The FLA’s team will inspect manufacturing areas, dormitories and other facilities, and will conduct an extensive review of documents related to procedures at all stages of employment.” Tech factories in cheap labour markets have an horrific reputation of low wages, terrible conditions and poor safety controls. Apple’s factories have been rocked by two separate explosions which killed four and injured 77, and in 2010 a spate of suicides rankled critics who said Apple had aided and abetted the problem in the face of ever increasing profits. Apple shares rocketed past $US500 for the first time ever today.
Are your dates who they say they are?
That’s the million dollar question for some online daters who are hiring private detectives and investigation firms to suss out the people they meet online. The services are used to verify that men and women pass the background check: no secret marriages, not lying about their wealth and, importantly, no nasty criminal records. ulia Robson, from DateScreen – which specialises in investigating online Romeos – says she receives about 20 calls a day to the service she launched in June last year. Ms Robson says the checks are not only saving people from a broken heart, but in many cases, tens of thousands of dollars. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says Australians were scammed of more than $21 million while trying to find love online last year. The average loss reported to the consumer watchdog was $20,000. The real cost of online love scams – in which a scammer woos a genuine dating site user to get them to provide money or personal details – could be much higher, given many people are often too embarrassed to report it.
Riots in Greece as ‘austerity measures’ approved
For Greece, there’s no gain if there isn’t some pain first. The country’s parliament approved new austerity measures yesterday so that it could receive the latest round of bailouts from the European Union worth $130 billion Euro. The measures are some of the harshest in the nation’s history which require the sacking of 150,000 public servants by 2015, a 22 per cent cut to the minimum wage and cuts to pensions. But the catch is the money would be stored in an escrow account that Greece couldn’t touch until it paid down vast chunks of its debt, a move many in Greece see as a loss of sovereignty. Tens of thousands of protestors and rioters took to the streets of Greece yesterday to rebel against the vote. The extreme measures were do-or-die for the country, but it doesn’t make it an easier realisation when unemployment is at 21 per cent. Half the country’s youth are unemployed. And it remains unclear whether the latest round of bailouts will even help spare Greece a default. If it does, the ripples in European economies will be felt almost immediately.
Two vastly different worlds: Gina Rinehart’s half sister
Born a decade before Gina Rinehart, Hilda Kickett would become part of the stolen generation – raised in a Perth orphanage – while her half sister would be born and go on to become one of the richest people in the world, the richest in Australia. But Ms Kickett, who is the child of a relationship between Lang Hancock and an Indigenous station cook, says she isn’t interested in money, just the relationship she has with Gina’s kids. “I just love them dearly, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for them if I could – that includes Gina. The thing is, who they are – they’re privileged to be who they are and they should never move away from that. But they are so down to earth.
They’ve been out there, they know what it is all about.” She says Lang Hancock never forgot her and would send shoes and presents and once took her to visit his home for a week, where she saw Gina in this ‘big blessed pram’ and took her in the river to soak.
The big winners from the Grammys
Adele was the star of the night when she took six Grammys, including the biggest three: song and record of the year for ‘Rolling in the Deep’, and album of the year for ’21′. Bon Iver won the best new artist and best alternative album. Kanye West won the best rap album. Dubstep wunderkind Skrillex won twice for best dance recording (Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites) and best dance album by the same name. Taylor Swift won twice for best country solo performance and song for ‘Mean’. And the comedian other comedians say they love, Louis CK, won best comedy album for ‘Hilarious. What did you think of the winners?

From the outset, I have no problem with anyone who wishes to get married, irrespective of their sexual orientation.
However, I shake my head at to how this social debate goes round and round in circles, and how debates happen with two sides mixing and confusing issues.
1. Title on this page…”we have a right to love”
WTF!!! no we don’t. It’s not a “right”, its a freedom we have in this society/country we live in. Big difference. And yes, everybody has this FREEDOM
2. Church and State.
Like it or not, Christian religion is entrenched within our government. This is the single biggest road block for the issue. In my view, this is most offensive state of our governing bodies not just here in Australia, but worldwide. Imagine if our legislators made decisions for all not based with the constrants of religion, but based on clear, unbiased, rational, problem solving not influenced by one or any religion.
3. Does Church have exclusive rights to the term or process of marriage.
Ok, I agree that the word probably originated from the process of two people pledging there co-existence for life within the church/religious confines.
But whether the church or any religion, seeing that the word is so generally used in all types of scenarios, has dibs on the term and process…. I’m not so sure.
My parents are married. They are essentially atheists, and got married at a registry office. No church or ceremony involved. Pretty simple, and don’t know why sexual orientation has anything to do with that. So this could be changed tomorrow, but like I said in point above, church is entrenched in our government, so easier said than done.
4. Homosexual couples to marry within the Church (religion).
Religions in free societies, ours included, can decide their own rules and constitutions. They are free to do so, as long as it does not break any laws of the land, or human rights of another person or group.
Marriage by the way is not a human right.
Governments should not force a religion to alter its rules or constitution. They themselves must choose their direction based on the history, their leaders and their followers.
So, these are four points that are key to the overall issue of the state formally recognising the marriage between two people of the same sex. There may be others two, sure there are.
Also, my views are probably wrong in the eyes of many. True.
But please everyone, when two are debating/arguing… stay on the same point!!

if we \believe that celebrities can help can people’s minds and bring about change in perceptions about gay/lesbian culture and acceptance ( and I believe that), then lets encourage all celebrities, sports people, politicians etc to come out. Let’s individually ask them if we know them to do this, as surely there is no shame?
Over to you Mia to ask all those at Nine etc Tracey Grimshaw for a start!

we also have the right ot be incredibly fat as she endlessly supported until jenny craig came to her rescue and suddnely she thinks being thin or thinner is the way to go…you have lost me Magda…couldn’t give a crap if you are gay/bi/celibate/straight….your life…but don’t use your sexuality/size when it’s possible for self serving advertising…

Today was the launch for the Australian National Year of Reading. Somehow this super- important event hasn’t been given any airplay in the mainstream media. Why am I not surprised?
For anyone else who is passionate about raising awareness of literacy in our kids and encouraging their enjoyment of reading, go to your local library and check out all the activities they’re putting on! Support your school in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
For these and loads of other activities, take a look at the National Year of Reading’s website: http://www.love2read.org.au.

Every birthday and Xmas I buy the nieces/nephews their gifts and then I always add a book or two.
Reading is so important.

As I read about Magda being gay this morning on Mamamia I immediately thought of my parents. They both LOVE Magda, mainly from her role in Kath and Kim. However, they are also in their 60′s and quite homophobic and insulting to gays in general. We’ve had many “discussions” over the years exchanging differing viewpoints on a person’s right to happiness. I’m pro gay rights and gay marriage and they are not.
So it was with trepidation I phoned for a chat this morning. I brightly said” so did you hear Magda’s news?”. And it was met with ” yes, so she’s one of THEM”. I wasn’t surprised of course but was disappointed that someone they loved prior to hearing her sexuality could be shunned once knowing she’s gay. Is this just a generational thing? I’m 33 and don’t know anyone in my age group who is homophobic. Mostly I just feel sad for my parents who were raised to think that gay= something to be feared.
loading...
I don’t mean to offend, by why do gays feel the need to have marriage legalised?
I guess it would be good for the wedding industry!
loading...
Sam, really are you serious with that comment?
Why shouldn’t everyone, regardless of sexuality, be able to have the same rights?
loading...
Bacause ‘the gays’ as you so horribly put it are human beings. They love like ‘straights’ and denying them the right to marry sends a very clear message that there love is less and does not deserve the same rights/traditions or celebration as a hetero couple.
loading...
“chances are, gay people designed whatever it is you’re wearing.” Geez, don’t stereotype or anything.
I can’t believe this is making as much news as it is. Aren’t there bigger minority groups around with bigger fish to fry? Get over it, for goodness sake!
I’m not giving up my beliefs because a bunch of people wants me to. Just like they’re not going to change. And no one is making them!
Cue the PC brigade, up in arms because my opinion wasn’t the same as their own. Only the righteous are allowed public opinion without consequence.
loading...
Err, your opinion is here. You’re allowed one
loading...
I’m not sure you read my comment properly. You can state your opinion but you’ll be blasted for it if it’s not the minority PC opinion. So far, it’s a bit too soon for the backlash. Give it another 10 minutes.
loading...
You are allowed an opinion for sure, but let’s be very clear: I disagree with you.
loading...
Yawn!
loading...
Yep you are spot on, just read some of the backlash handed out to people who have different views to the majority in the comments section of the “don’t let these images harden your heart” article…..and before anyone else says it no they weren’t racist views, they were DIFFERENT.
loading...
As Magda responded to Steve tonight on The Project: Why does she have to justify asking for something a MAJORITY supports. 62% was the statistic. That’s not a minority, Jacqui.

Re: the Apple story – there’s a very interesting episode of the podcast, “This American Life” called “Mr Daisey and the Apple Factory” about an American who poses as a business man so he can see what’s going on in the factories in China that make our goods. It’s well worth a listen.

Mamamia,if what you are reporting is true that Hilda Kickett is a half sister of Gina Rinehart, do you know why Hilda won’t show the documention of DNA proof as reported in today’s Herald Sun? I would show it just to prove my point, even though there is no inheritence to be gained from it.

I really don’t understand why Taylor Swift is winning grammys………. sure she’s talented but I’m not sure it’s grammy worthy…
loading...
…because she is a very talented singer song-writer…
loading...
She’s better than the majority who are receiving them
loading...
I’n not a fan of her music at all, but I’m glad that singer-songwriters and real musicains won a lot of the awards this year. These people didn’t need crazy gimmicks and costumes.
loading...
Shes a great live performer as well as writing her own material. Katy Perry, as much as I love her music, live she can hardly hold a note.
loading...
I agree. She’s just so average.
loading...
Forgive me for saying so but a) isn’t this old news about Magda and b) why should it matter?
Magda’s sexual preferences don’t effect me (or I suspect just about anyone else) and it certainly doesn’t effect my opinion of her as an actress and comedian.
I think she’s great no matter who whe prefers to sleep with!
Having said that, anybody who wants to get married to their significant other should be allowed to do so.
loading...
I think the news about Magda is that she is another celebrity coming out in favour of same sex marriage, that’s all.
loading...
The more famous/well-known people that are out, the more ‘normal’ the LGBT community appears to people who might think otherwise, and who do not have any interactions with them in ‘real life’.
It’s sad that it still matters, but it still matters quite a lot.
loading...
Here here Sandi.
Could not of said it better myself.
Why cant any person who has love for each other have the choice of marriage? Why does it have to be such an issue! Love is love no matter what race, sex, religion etc…
loading...
Gee whiz, what a generous man Lang was!! A few shoes, and she was in an orphanage!! What a gracious lady, she didn’t inherit THAT from her fathers side!! Though thumbs up to the kids!
loading...
You’re right on there, MASD. But, I think she’s the lucky one. Money hasn’t made Gina or her children happy or gracious that I can see.
loading...
Go Magda!
loading...
Interesting that Magda specifically mentions netball hahaha !
loading...
NO! Not Sophia Grace and Rosie!
loading...
Every time I hear about gay marriage, I think about gays and how they have been persecuted.
And then I think of the Intelligence Squared debate, in particular this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lg2yjIITrlM&feature=related
Especially from about 7min30 to 8min 20.
And then also the brief discussion right after, about whether or not Jesus said anything about homosexuality.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned below, but have a look at Google’s valentine’s video on it’s homepage. Particularly towards the end where it shows several couples together highlighting that love is love regardless of gender. Massive props to Google for this. Done subtly, but well.

Yay for Magda!

i had heard magda was gay on the grapevine…good on her for coming out – so sorry she felt she didnt want to for so long. and for all the other closetted gays – you can come out now – it’s safe…. Interesting wife swap last night if anyone watched it, a gay couple swapped with a christian couple, and the chistian husband was not at all on board with someone being gay. The lady who swapped was quite surprised at how bigotted he was. anyway, go magda, you are fabulous!!
loading...
It had never occured to me that Magda was anything other than Madga! Never thought of her as gay or straight, just a hoot!
loading...
Unfortunately it is still not ‘safe’ for everyone to come out. Wish it was but it isn’t. My partner is a high school teacher and there are still kids coming out to parents that get thrown out of home. If you work at many religious organisations (schools, foster agencies) you can risk losing your job by being out.
Great strides have been made in the last decade or two but the risk now is complacency. People thinking that the battle is over and everything is coming up rainbows for the gay community.
loading...
I find it tragic that some parents love and devotion to their children is conditional upon them being what they want them to be.
loading...
I agree, definitely still not ‘safe’ for many, many people. Sad
loading...
Good for Magda. On the issue of legality of gay marriage, this speech is wonderful.

I loved that video! She’s my favourite Republican.

No support for same sex marriage at this Newcastle church it seems. Very sad.

Oh. ouch!

Wasn’t Joseph a carpenter? Didn’t seem to matter so much for the birth of his son Jesus!

It was a miracle! I don’t know why more women don’t use the Virgin Mary’s excuse.
loading...
Geez, in one hit they’re insulting both tradies and gay people. Good work guys :-/
loading...
Pathetic.
loading...
Then why are there male to male adaptors??
loading...
This is why I’m an atheist !!
loading...
Im still trying to get my head around this.
1/ Marriage is a religious ceremony not a government law.You have seperate ceremonies to get around the religious aspect of a union.
2/ Certain religions forbid marriage to people of the same sex. Most i would assume.
3/ You cannot legislate to change a religious ceremony.
Possible answers :
4/ Find another religion or find another ceremony to replace marriage.
You cant change the religious rules of marriage as they are enshrined in the literature of the religion.
loading...
Sorry Mark, but marriage is a legal union under the Marriage Act. A marriage can be solemnised in a civil ceremony or a religious one, but the legal affect is the same: once the ceremony is performed and both couples agree to be bound by the marriage, then legally, the couple is married.
The issue is that gay people do not have this legal right for their union to be recognised. Anything short of that is discriminating against them on the basis of their sexuality. Marriage should be the same, legally, for any 2 consenting adults, regardless of their sexual preference.
loading...
Marriage is a legal contract. You can have the ceremony in a church or a registry office, in a garden, in a park, in your living room.
No one is saying that churches should be pressured or forced into performing marriage ceremonies. Churches can refuse to marry, baptise or bury anyone now and that right won’t be taken away if marriage equality is achieved.
However, gay people will be able to have every right that straight people have.
Young gay people won’t grow up feeling like second class citizens.
I hope we will look back and see how horrendous the current view of same sex marriage is, the way we look back on the idea that people of different colors should not marry.
I forget who said it, but if you don’t agree with same sex marriage then don’t get married to a person of the same sex! But don’t deny others that right.
loading...
Vanessa – There are many reasons that a church wont marry, baptise or bury people. No part of the parish, not part of the faith etc. If a gay person comes to them and fits all the crieteria and the church still refuses to marry them then the only reason has to be their sexuality. Dont tell me that with this legislation in place they wouldnt be charged with some offence (human rights – equal opportunity ?) and forced to perform the ceremony. Thus breaking the rules of their faith.

Good one, Magda! Why aren’t our politicians listening to us on this issue?
loading...
In a way, the Greek protesters are right. Europe and the Europeans banks have to force Greece into submission to protect the Euro. Greece is now an indebted slave state (for want of a better phrase) to financial institutions. To get their most important piece of legistlation (the budget) passed, they need another entity’s approval. Control the budget, control the country.
It’s the death knell of common currencies. And in hindsight, this was always going to happen. One rouge nation (and in this case, four – the PIGS nations) crushes the financial worth of the currency, leaving the other countries forced to help or see their own finances ruined by a crashing dollar/euro.
Now a financial institution own a soverign state. Probably not the first time in history (India comes to mind) but the first time in modern history I’m guessing.
If there isn’t a secret plan to disband the Euro completely being hastly dusted off and updated, I’ll be pretty surprised.
loading...
The other secret plan (and what France and Germany have secretly wanted) is greater fiscal control being given to the EU…it could go either way…Europe could gradually return to the bad old days before integration where, sadly, we may see the return of the regular cycle of European civil wars…or, we may start to see the end to separate nation states in Europe and the beginning of a single Government…interesting days…
loading...
I am also concerned about the use of the term rioters. My understanding is that people – aged from 5 to 90 were protesting the changes only to be bombarded by huge amounts of tear gas. They then get blamed for rioting for reacting to such heavy handed tactics.
loading...
I see that the austerity measures, as usual, are aimed at the lower end of the socio economic part of Greek society. What I’d like to know is, are the politicians, in a gesture of solidarity , planning to take the pay cut too?
Doubt it. I don’t know what the minimum wage/pension is like compared to cost of living, but that’s gotta hurt.
loading...
There is a lot to be said for that. I was in Athens a few months ago and I have never seen so much ostentatious wealth in one area in my life. For those who are suffering there are many still living in the lap of luxury. Its only fair if everyone was made to sacrifice and for all the job losses and pension cuts I wonder if they are increasing taxes for the top income earners as well?
loading...
Good on you Magda!
But what about Gina’s half sister? Given Lang’s archaic views on indigenous people that I think I read on mamamia,I am astounded Lang had a “relationship” with the cook. I see another law suit heading Gina’s way. I quite like the fact that she is now trying to control the media, and yet the media has responded by exploding in her face airing family secrets that beggar belief.
loading...
Im not. It’s reminiscent of what happened on slave plantations across the US in the bad old days. I’m sure it happened elsewhere here too.
loading...
Getting your staff pregnant has nothing to do with respect…
loading...
I had no idea Madga was gay. I can’t believe in 2012 people still have to hide who they are. Especially someone who Australia loves so dearly. It’s great to have such a great face behind the fight for equality.
loading...
She may not have made it public before but she didnt hide who she was when she was out. I have seen her and her partner at various charity get togethers and there is no disputing they were a couple. And they have a pretty good time getting their boogy on on the dance floor too

Good on Magda! I loved Adele at the Grammys she was amazing! Didn’t care much for Nicki Minaj’s performance!

I couldn’t hear Nicki Minaj’s song over the noise of her overblown ego!

Ahhh yes I agree it was just too much!
loading...
HA. Love it.
I cannot stand her or her terrible ‘music’

I actually watched The Grammys this year, because I wanted to see the reformed (what’s left of them) Beach Boys.
Not that fussed about winners or losers on The Grammys…they never really represent what’s best in music…more what’s popular, which is fine…but not relevant to me.
Of the performances, I loved seeing Brian Wilson reunited with the rest of the Beach Boys…I may have had a tear in my eye, but only because I caught some sand in it…
I thought the Whitney tribute was lovely, but I still would have loved to have seen Dolly Parton sing “I will always love you”…it would have been a perfect tribute from the woman who wrote the song to the woman who made it famous…
I though the performance of the night was from Taylor Swift…a simple but beautiful song sung without extravagance by a beautiful young woman in a simple dress and hair in a plat..you see, you don’t need all the bling…
Well, actually, I did think that was the best performance of the night until Sir Paul came out at the end and sung the final medley from Abbey Road…that really put the night into perspective…a 69 year old man singing a 43 year old song…and it blew away every other performance that night…even after all these years, The Beatles really do have an average of 99.94 with daylight second…wow!
loading...
I didn’t see all the Grammy’s last night. I only saw the last half hour and even i can say that i had goosebumps and a bit of a lump in my throat watching the beachboys perform and then Sir paul mcCartney close the show. They all looked to be having a great time in the guitar mashup at the end. I wish i had seen it all now because those last two performances were amazing!

I agree. I always preferred Whitney’s version, but I still like dolly Parton singing it.

I don’t care if Magda is gay or not gay. Whatever she is or isn’t is her personal choice. I think she is wonderful completely regardless of her choice of partner.
loading...
Foo Fighters cleaned up too didn’t they? Oooh and just saw the Beach Boys! Good times, huh, JJ?

I am also a massive Beach Boys fan. Taught well by my parents.

Same here Rick – I don’t think they intended me to be though! More coincidence… back in the ye’olden days of the Walkman I used to have a cassette that had ‘Girlfriend’ on one side (we’re talking mid-90′s here and I was about 8) and rather than sitting and rewinding the tape back to the start…. I’d listen to the other side. Which was The Beach Boys – Loved it!! Have loved them ever since
loading...
*I was about 8. Stupid emoticon!

…and of course, Glen Campbell as well, who was also briefly a member of The Beach Boys in the mid 60s…they should have got him up there with the boys for a song as well…

I saw him on Ellen over the last month or so, he’s doing pretty well.
