LIPOSUCTION INQUEST HEARS DETAILS
Lauren Edgar was 28 when she booked herself in for liposuction surgery. She died five days later.
Now an inquest into her death has heard she likely died from a rare, one-in-a-million infection called gas gangrene. The ABC reported:
Dr Phillip Griffin, a senior plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, told the inquest that he thinks the most likely cause of Ms Edgar’s infection was germs from the skin surface entering the wounds.
“It remains my opinion that the organisms did enter during the time of the liposuction, probably entering through the left thigh,” he told the inquest,” he said.
“It is very difficult for most doctors to diagnose, a patient can become very unwell very quickly and until that occurs it might be very difficult to diagnose gas gangrene at all until the classical signs emerge.”
1. Bob Katter (yes, him) wants to give $7000 to Australian families for each child they have to ‘keep the Australian race alive’. Immigration won’t cut it, he says, because, well, they’re immigrants. He wants Aussies breeding Aussies or we’ll die out.
2. Are you my friend? An American woman is attempting to photograph everyone of her 625 Facebook friends in their own homes - in the US and abroad – to prove they’re more than just clicks on a social networking site. Cool. She’s almost a third of the way there!
3. Is there anything Hillary does these days that doesn’t make her the focus of the world’s love? She had her photo taken … get this … without her make-up on (allegedly). And wearing glasses! OMG how crazy. When asked, she said this: “I feel so relieved to be at the stage I’m at in my life right now. Because you know if I want to wear my glasses I’m wearing my glasses. If I want to wear my hair back I’m pulling my hair back. You know at some point it’s just not something that deserves a lot of time and attention. And if others want to worry about it, I let them do the worrying for a change.” Take a look (and there’s some other big names without face paint here too).

Marion Cotillard
4. Yes he does. US President Barack Obama confirmed for the first time ever that he supports same sex marriage … six months out from a tough election when his poll numbers are looking terrible, particularly in socially conservative states. North Carolina became the 30th state to outlaw same sex marriage. Obama said the First Lady ‘feels the same way I do’.
5. Hands off. The US state of Tennessee had passed the ‘Gateway Sexual Activity Bill’ which outlaws any school children in the state holding hands. Yes, you can tell by the name of the bill that hand-holding is a gateway to much, much worse crimes…

So Katter, if you don’t like immigrants, when are you leaving?

‘Gateway Sexual Activity Bill’ – they spent money on thinking this law up?? *head desk motion – repeat*.

I hope that this is an indication that Obama is becoming the President that all of us who voted for him the first time hoped he would be but couldn’t be politically if he wanted a shot at a 2nd term. I’d love to see him achieve some of the things that we all thought were behind the “hope and change” presidential campaign of 2008.

I love Obama!

Mad Hatter Katter is at it again. His quote “they won’t be Australians, they’ll be migrants” has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve heard in years.
And yay Obama! You win at all of the things. Unfortunately, Gillard chose to reiterate her opposition today. Welcome to the backwater.

Oh huzzah!
I can once again click through the photo albums at work.
Thanks Team MM!!

It’s absolutely tragic about Lauren Edgar. I hope her case gets a lot of publicity so people realise how dangerous ‘simple day procedures’ can be. We see so many gorgeous celebs popping up with new boobs and skinnier thighs and assume it’s safe and easy. We need to be reminded that there are risks involved, and that they can eventuate even if we’re young, healthy and careful.

Are the right-wing nutters taking over Queensland again? And , Mr Bob Katter, which groups constitute the ‘Australian Race’?
Big yay for Prez Obama …. I particularly liked the way he mentioned the military in his interview…..”soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf”….Ms Gillard, we await your response.

That’s horrible about Lauren Edgar! It’s always tragic with infections and diseases that cannot really be diagnosed until it’s too late.
Bob Katter confuses me – that is so racist and old fashioned it’s taking more than a few steps backwards!! Australia is so multi-cultural now, we should embrace it! We get to experience to many different cultures and foods etc without stepping outside the country.
I love Obama. That’s all.
As for point 5, I really don’t see the point. How do they plan to enforce this?

Bob Katter is exactly that, Lauren91 – racist and old-fashioned, he’s also homophobic. Makes me cringe every time he gets publicity here in North QLD, ugh.

I didn’t know Katter was Indigenous! But I guess he must be if he’s so against immigration. It’s almost like he’s convieniantly forgetting how most of us (or our ancestors) got here.

Wait….the Mamamia logo is different!!!

I noticed it yesterday but forgot to comment. Personally I prefer the old one. What was the stimulus for the change?

I am so pleased that Barack has stood by his beliefs and has confirmed he supports gay marriage.
Go Barack!
mark. my. words…he will be president..AGAIN !!!

Strikes me as an extraordinary coincidence that he has randomly changed his views. Do l smell an election looming?? Julia – will she change her view as well?? Watch this space!!

I don’t think he’s changes his view, just expressed it. And it’s not a vote-winning move in the U.S. in most places, quite the opposite, so it’s a principled stand that will only please those whose vote he most likely already has in the bag

Bob Katter is so weird. On one hand, it’s hard to disagree with too many of the Australian Party’s listed core values on their website (bar number 18, which outlines their rejection of same sex marriage).
With mention of collective bargaining, definitive outline of where government regulation is appropriate and not appropriate and even respectful reference to ‘First Australians’, the Australian Party isn’t far removed from traditional (current? who knows) Labor or Green policy platforms. The Australian Party is definitely the only party besides the Greens to call for a halt to coal seam gas exploration, call to support farmers and food security and to review foreign investment aligns with our long term national interests instead of a quick buck.
In many ways, The Australian Party is a party that seems to gel with my own personal values and ideas around government reasonably well.
But the unspoken racism that comes through from statements like immigration won’t solve the problem, “because they won’t be Australians, they’ll be immigrants”, plus the huge homophobic hate and fear card plays they make just puts them into the loony bin.
Where is the party that all Australians could support? Not in North Queensland, not anywhere.

I know, I find it quite strange how the Greens and Katter are unlikely bedfellows on so many issues – Coles/Woolies duopoly (though Katter has been far more explicit and vocal about this than the Greens), protectionism, CSG, indigenous affairs, food security…it’s why I can’t really describe Katter as far right, as he is often called.
In fact, economically he’s left, definitely further to the left than Labor. It’s just these redneck attitudes e.g. immigration, marriage equality that let his party down – and that is not a ‘right wing’ attitude. That attitude is found on the left and the right of the economic divide.
That’s why my father – who was going to vote for Katter’s party in the recent Qld elections – ended up voting Green after the ad that the party released regarding Can-Do’s view on marriage equality. In his vote for the Greens, he was voting for all of Katter’s best policies and none of the redneck ones.

I’d guess a large number of Australians reject the ‘economic maximisation above all else’ policies of the two major parties and prefer an approach where the economic is still a major consideration, but other things like long term national security and social welfare are equal considerations.
If they weren’t split by social issues, this demographic would be a major political force.
loading...
Agree. The UK, and other countries, is looking at determining the health and wealth of a nation by including indices of social growth and wellbeing, not just economic growth.
It would be great if this concept caught on with the political parties here. Bottom line is that we are a human society and social indices should be included to give a complete picture of a country’s growth.

Where Obama leads do you think Gillard will follow?

Possibly. She too needs the votes.

Bob Katter, you are a dead set moron!

Guess what? people of all colours can pay tax when they enter workforce.

There is something strange about Hillary’s face in that set of photos, I don’t know what it is but wierd!

Obviously, the Kenyan Muslim Communist is also gay. When you claim your free health care in the US, the doctors will insert ‘the gay’ into you (by holding hands, I’m told).

News that’s making me mad today – A little boy here in NZ has been excluded from day care because he is HIV positive. The news piece on it last night and feedback I’ve read about it the story is astounding, I thought we got past this ignorant, redneck stage in the 90′s when Eve Van Grafhorst moved here.
loading...
That’s shocking! Poor kid. If he was ever wondering, he definitley knows now that he’s different “in a bad way”
Poor thing.
loading...
How sad. Not only for the HIV positive child but also the other children in the centre. What kind of ethics is this teaching them? ‘Because he’s different, he can’t play with you’. Just sad, sad, sad.

I wonder why?

It’s actually not that shocking – a friend of my Dad’s lived with us when I was a teenager who had HIV so I’m not coming from a place of ignorance. If a child falls and cuts himself (like my son did at daycare and will forever have a scar on his face) it is actually a health hazard and most (I would assume all) daycare centres aren’t set up to dispose of biological hazardous waste.
No it’s not *nice* but it’s just the way it is.
loading...
I can understand their reasoning behind it – but I’m talking about the daycare’s actions – i.e. banning the child from attending and outing him to all of the other parents,
This boys viral load is so low that is it virtually undetectable in his blood, meaning (medical professionals, correct me if I’m wrong) really this boy cutting himself and rubbing/dripping/transferring a fair amount of blood onto somebody elses open wound is the only danger.
I think what a great opportunity for the daycare to educate themselves and their children/parents about HIV, put in place processes to deal with what should happen if he cut or injured himself and also what a great opportunity for those kids to learn that just because he has this disease, does mean he isn’t ‘normal.’
There have also been zero cases of children (in NZ at least) being infected with HIV at daycare/schools/creches etc.
loading...
Totally agree that everything you suggested would be fabulous – but can you imagine if something did happen? The responsibility would be hard for a centre to manage I think. It was bad enough for my dad’s friend – he was always paranoid about us not accidentally using the same nail clippers, buying a different toothbrush to ensure we didn’t get them mixed up etc. The chance of transmission in a non-direct (ie sexual, needle-stick) would be so unbelievably low, but the cost is massive. I don’t think it’s right that the daycare center needed to talk about this story to other parents if that’s what happened – that’s totally unethical.
