What’s everyone talking about today? Twenty-six-year-old Olympic swimmer Leisel Jones’ weight.
It comes after a Melbourne newspaper ran photos of Jones, which were taken while she was training in London yesterday, alongside photos of her from the 2006 games and asked readers if they thought she was fit enough to swim.
The woman has won eight Olympic medals. Eight. She’s a champion of epic proportions and has just qualified for her fourth Games. And yet everyone is sitting around saying she doesn’t ‘look’ like a champion swimmer? Surely the point should be that she swims like a champion swimmer.
LEISEL Jones’ coach, Michael Bohl, has vehemently rejected suggestions she was treating the Olympics as anything other than serious competition, and says she has been performing well in training and is in good condition to compete next week. “She’s here under great grounds. She’s definitely got her work cut out for her. I’m not going to say it’s going to be easy for her at all. But in saying that, she’s done the work to get here”
Jones has repeatedly said these Games were the icing on the cake for her, having created history by becoming the first Australian swimmer to qualify for four Olympics.
Some feel that Jones is not in the best shape and is treating London as a farewell tour, not taking it as seriously as she had the previous three Games, where she won a total of eight medals.
The good news is Jones’ current and former teammates and other social commentators have thrown their support behind her and made a lot of noise voicing their support.
Giaan Rooney said on Twitter: “Anyone commentating on Leisel’s weight three days out from the Olympics should be ashamed. Should be celebrating our athletes not pulling them down.”
Sing it sister.
Giaan also told radio station 3AW: “I also don’t think Leisel has ever put herself up there as the super slim, incredibly cut athlete. She has never had that body shape, and it’s worked for her for the last 12 years so why would we be changing anything now? Leisel has always been very strong through her hips, she has always been really strong through her legs….She needs to be, she’s a breaststroker, and for me I don’t think there’s any difference [in her weight]. In fact I would love to ask the question after the Olympics whether she’s the same weight now as she was 12 months ago because for me, I would think it’s an unflattering photo angle.”
Retired swimmer Alice Tait said: “The questioning over Leisel Jones fitness due to an unflattering photo is exactly what many girls have body image issues! Makes me so angry!”
Melinda Tankard Reist tweeted:
Then there’s this from Hayley Lewis, via The Herald Sun:
“I think it’s a little bit unfair and I think that at that stage of the competition and you’re days out from the Olympics…I think it’s very unfortunate for such a great sportsperson such as Leisel that she has to hear about things like that,” Lewis told SEN Radio.
She said it was clear Leisel’s body had changed over her career and the swimmer would be feeling it.
“She’s obviously coming to the end of her career and your body does change as you get older.
“She probably knows within herself that she doesn’t feel quite 100 per cent fit,” Lewis said.
“When standing next to one of the younger, slimmer girls she probably doesn’t look like she’s fighting fit but in saying that she’s never had that figure anyway, so I think it’s a bit unfair.
“Leisel has never had that tiny straight up and down, very sinewy, lean swimmer’s body and she’s managed to win countless amounts of Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals.”
Yes! Yes! Fist pump time! Why has everyone forgotten that she qualified FOR THE OLYMPICS? (They’re a big deal you know, happen every four years, champions only etc?) And that it’s her 4th Olympics? (That is 12 years of being one of the best in the world at something, 12 years!) And that she’s about to set a record for being the only Australian to ever achieve that? And that if she wins one medal in London she’ll equal Ian Thorpe’s overall tally?
We’re exhausted just thinking about all of that. And surely it is those achievements and the ones that are still ahead of her – and not the size of her thighs – that should be worthy of our attention.

She looks like most girls without jeans. Leave her alone!

It must have been a slow day in the sports section of the newsroom. Leisel Jones is just awesomeness personified. The girl is a legend and has made Australian Olympic history with the London Olympics before she even hits the water in her first race.
Why is her weight an issue? And it obviously didn’t occur to whoever was responsible for this story that water has a higher density than air, thereby providing bouyancy and countering gravity – pretty much making one weightless when swimming.
loading...
My 11 yr old daughter asked me what this story was about so I explained it.
Her response “well she’s qualified for the Olympics so she’s clearly awesome at what she does. Maybe people should just get over it”
so reassuring to hear such wise words from my pre-teen
loading...
Im sure if she was wearing her racing suit (that has got to be tighter than shape wear) then noone would know any different and wouldn’t be questioning her ability to perform.
She did qualify after all!
loading...
I think that this post just proves that we’re all brainwashed to believe that ‘fat’ means ‘unhealthy’. Yay for Liesel being a shining example of how your body size can be independent of your fitness level. The fact is that while there are plenty of outward indicators of health, size is not the most conclusive. And yet it’s what’s focused on to the exclusion of all else. It’s a very ‘unhealthy’ obsession.
loading...
Leisel is in the Olympics you’re not so SHUT UP! That is all…
loading...
Who cares?? She is going to the olympics represeting our country. Everyone should be supporting her, not making stupid remarks about her weight.
Go leisel, you will do great and are far far fitter than I will ever be!
loading...
She could be pregnant you know.
loading...
You know what? Who cares what she weighs? She is doing something she loves and she is obviously good at it. Why else would she be there. She would beat me bloody hands down. Tall poppy syndrome I say. Go Leisel!
loading...
thats the point we’re missing: that she is still an amazing swimmer. so what if se wont be getting into runway modelling? will many people? shes clearly fit and healthy, otherwise she wouldnt be in the most prestige competition in the world, yes?
loading...
She did look a bit heavy in that photo from what I remember her previously. If she is carrying extra weight it’s sure to affect her performance, though if she’s qualified ahead of the rest to be there then that makes her still the best person Australia has for the job.
loading...
Why is everyone so sensitive about calling someone ‘fat’ only when it’s a girl? Women, stop being such emotionally driven eating-disorder prone vanity creatures and harden up. Fact: Leisel is fat. So what? Don’t turn it into a big deal. I think it was a good article exploring whether being fat affects swimming performance (body fat levels seem to have far less impact on performance than in other sports such as athletics). The author needed more scientific analysis though.
loading...
Luckily Geoff Huegill and Ian Thorpe never got media and public scrutiny about their wieght in a sport that require supreme fitness.
Oh…Wait!
loading...
“Fact: Liesel is fat.”
Not sure your idea of a fact is the same as the majority of people.
We’ll see what happens when Liesel competes. I hope she smashes it then eats a big cake live on camera.
loading...
I hope someone else feeds her the big cake live on camera. That would be HOT! And then he gives her a chocolate gold medal and she eats that too.
loading...
“Fact: Liesel is fat”
My god, what planet are you from? In what universe is this girl fat? Seriously?
loading...
I’d like the journalist or commentator who first criticised Jones’ body to be photographed in racing swimming togs and PLASTERED ALL OVER THE FRONT PAGES of the newspapers just for our enjoyment. Or page views.
F**kers.
loading...
Or, perhaps more relevantly, be asked to swim alongside Liesel to demonstrate how she’s “out of shape” and “not taking it seriously enough”.
loading...
Yes! Yes please! Would love to see a photo of that “journo” in swimmers!
loading...
Totally agree that it doesn’t matter what she looks like, clearly if she has qualified at such an elite level she is most certainly fit enough to swim! What message does this rubbish commentary (the original media article) send to us all anyway. I know a lot of skinny people who are not fit, and a lot of solidly built people who are very fit.
loading...
Two schoolgirls were sitting behind me on the bus this morning discussing this.
Girl 1 “Oh my god, did you see on the TV that they were calling Liesel Jones fat?”
Girl 2 ” I know. So cruel. She’s not even fat. They should be supporting her. So wrong.”
They then spent the next 10 minutes talking about their favourite female athletes. They didn’t mention size, they talked about strength and achievements.
From the mouths of babes.
loading...
This is very reassuring to hear!
loading...
I think Leisel Jones looks fantastic.
loading...
See, this is the whole problem, perfectly captured in one statement. THIS ISNT ABOUT HOW SHE LOOKS. It is all about her condition to compete at her best. Period. What is so hard to get in that, and in that context, why is it such a crime to make the observation?
loading...
Ugh because she is in an Olympic team. She is performing at Olympic standard. We know that. So any comments about what she looks like in relation to her performance are totally redundant because she qualified for the Olympic team. So she IS performing well.
loading...
She is an olympic team? Come now, she is not that big.
loading...
I agree with wounded bull. We are talking about an elite, superstar athlete who at the top of her game is the best in the world. If she’s looking a little heavier than we’re used to and saying things like:
“(Now) I’m prepared to win a medal, I’m prepared not to. I’ve done everything I’ve ever wanted in my career. I’m so proud of myself for getting this far.”
Then of course there is bound to be speculation that she may not be about to ‘deliver’ what we hope from and for her.
loading...
Every journo and every commentator who has felt they have the right to comment on Leisel’s weight should be forced to spend just one morning trying to keep up with her training routine – they wouldn’t last a minute.
This woman is an amazing, stunning, superb athlete – and has done this country proud – over and over and over again – and she deserves better.
You don’t have to be an elite athlete to comprehend the vital importance of a positive attitude right before you compete, it goes hand in hand with the physical preparation.
Shame on these people for questioning her at this vital time – she is in London and she is ready to give her all and compete for her country on the world stage.
I hope she uses this negativity to spur her forward and blasts everyone out of the water to come home with some gold around her neck… and then denies the journos who doubted her an interview
But if she doesn’t – she is still a star in my book.
loading...
I hope she smashes it at the games
loading...
Oh if only they’d used photoshop, Leisel may have been spared all this controversy
.

I wonder what the Aussie media’s reaction would be if a UK or US newspaper posted this pic of Leisel and questioned her fitness – and therefore questioned the integrity of the qualification process of Aussie swimmers and the abilities of her coach and team trainers.
This aspect of the media was definitely an eye-opener for me when I first moved to Australia. They seem so quick to slag off our international athletes and teams, often echoed by many members of the general public (although I’m happy that in this case the majority seem to be telling the media to piss off). Whether it’s news broadcasts posting a pic this week of Adam Scott’s face with the word “choker” stamped across it, a sports reporter making a coughing sound when Sam Stosur exits a tournament or now this with Leisel, it can feel downright cruel and I don’t even know these people. I feel like a bit of a poser using the term Un-Australian since I wasn’t born here and this is your word, but this seems like the very epitome of it to me.
The fact that a relatively small country of 23 million produces athletes and teams that excel across a multitude of sports on an international level seems to get lost amid a desire to cut them down for some reason. We shouldn’t only be ‘protecting our own’ if attacked from the outside. We should be recognising how amazing it is that in a small country that has remained mainly scandal free as far as doping, match fixing, the often abusive conditions very young athletes are forced to endure due to tyrannical coaches and governments, Australia has still managed to produce world class champions by doing it the right way.
Leisel’s coach said she’ll have to shave a couple of seconds off of her PB this year to medal. If the concept of good karma exists in this world, she’ll do it with all of us cheering her on in front of the TV. And I hope if she does, she declines interviews with every media publication that so gracelessly ran rubbish like this about her.
loading...
Too many journalists with too much column space to fill and nothing about which to write. Idle hands and all that. Just look at how much work has been generated from one article criticising one athlete! Now so many other journalists get a few day’s easy articles expressing their outrage, followed by a few more about body image, and so on. Got to fill that space and will create drama to do it.
loading...
Those swimming costumes are really ugly and very unflattering!!
loading...
So are we still wondering why so many young girls (and athletes) have body image issues? Seriously.
As I posted on facebook earlier today: You don’t have the right to criticise someone for how they look in a swimsuit unless you’ve qualified for 4 Olympics, won 3 Olympic golds, 10 Commonwealth Game golds, broken world records in your chosen sport and won many world championships, all by the age of 26. You only have the right to shut up.
loading...
I LOVE your comment! Agree 100%
loading...
This story will die down soon (as it should), except for the fact that by re-posting this story you are bringing more attention to it. Let’s move on!
loading...
Media is looking for an Olympic story as they have no sport to discuss yet.. Liesel would know that she has put on weight and that it may be focused on, she is in a bathing suit all day! Of course people will notice!!
loading...
This story should just be pulled!
loading...
Leisel the perpetrators of this rubbish are morons! You are a brilliant athlete and great rep for the Aussies. Just get out there and swim lady we’re with you all the way.
loading...
As far as I can see every media site (including this one) is claiming to cover the story as part of an examination of the ethics of running such a story. Perhaps if they all STFU this non story wouldn’t get the air time it clearly doesn’t deserve. I have no idea whether she is “too fat”. Whether she is or isn’t it’s incredibly rude to say so and the great thing about sport is that it really doesn’t matter, what matters is the times she can put in.
loading...
She may be an Olympian, but she is still a 26 year old young woman. I know how painful it is when one or two people mention your weight.. Imagine if it was on the news!
It’s really odd to me that the swimming hasnt even started and people are saying she doesn’t ‘look fit enough’.. How would any of these people know if she is fit enough? Just wait until she actually swims a race before you make any comment!
loading...
I know this isn’t really pertinent but I have always thought Liesel Jones has one of the prettiest faces I have ever seen. She is adorable.
loading...
When this exact thing is said of males in sport, and it is regularly in the media, there is not a negative ripple anywhere.
When it is dared to be said of the great untouchables (aka females in Australia), then look out, the world has to stop, and Melinda Tankard Reist sees it as a grand sexist commentary based only on aesthetics and whether she is a ‘hot chick’. Hello, maybe it is all about whether she is actually in peak physical condition. I think Meilinda is the one with the problem here.
Do these people seeing red sleep through the countless other sporting codes where this type of commentary is heaped on men on a regular basis, and then some alarm with flashing lights goes off to wake them from their slumber the minute it is dared said of a female of the species?
Unbelievable. Settle everyone, lets keep some perspective.
loading...
My sister’s size 20 body would be considered obese compared to my size 12 body. But she would kick my arse in a swimming race any day. Size does not define someone’s level of fitness!
loading...
right, even at the absolute pinnacle of sport? Come now, lets be realistic.
loading...
Size 20 is obese full stop, regardless of who you’re comparing it to.
loading...
OK, I will probably get slammed for my comments, but here goes:
Leisel does look bigger than she usually does.
But it’s not OK for the media to be honing in on that, especially days out from competition.
Yes, Leisel did qualify for the games but that was about 4 months ago (I think) and it’s quite possible that her fitness levels have changed since then.
To those critics suggesting she’s in London for a ‘holiday’ – as if! As if a world-class athlete like Leisel, competing in her 4 Olympic Games would want to bow out by slacking off in her final Games.
I hope for Leisel’s own sake that she is just as fit as she was at the Olympic trials. It would be wonderful to see her retire from a stellar career on another high.
Go Leisel!
loading...
Completely agree with everything you’ve said.
loading...
Poor Leisel. I hope this news doesn’t reach her and if it does that she’s mature enough to ignore it.
Imagine how these comments would affect someone competing at their first Olympics. Leisel should hopefully be confident in her ability to know that she is great at what she does and size doesn’t matter.
We usually don’t hear how comments like these affect people until later on when they do an interview and can speak candidly. We should be supporting her and acknowledging her achievements.

Mia- this deserves it’s own post if it hasn’t previously had so.
Simon, – thank you. That was terrifying, but thank you.

Mia was on a panel at a viewing of this last week and I’m pretty sure the rest of the Mamamia team were there too. I’ve been waiting for an article about this to follow up on that so fingers crossed it’s coming!

Hey Beans
It was such an amazing film that we had a big office brainstorm of different ideas for posts to follow up with. There is just too much amazing information and analysis in there that we couldn’t do it justice in a single post. Stay tuned, lots to come. For me, my first reaction was to write the feminism piece we ran earlier this week. But we all had lots of ideas out of MissRep and you will definitely be seeing them here.

I’ve been following this story across many different news websites today as well as twitter and a little on radio.
I can honestly say that I am so appalled that these articles were allowed to be published in the first place. What a load of rubbish.
I have no doubts that they chose the most unflattering photos that they could find to create a tabloid style article like this one.
As many comments on this post have pointed out she would have trained long and hard and had to meet fast times to even get a spot on the team. If she wasn’t up to it there would be no way she would be there right now. There is no way she would have gotten a free ticket just because she’s Leisel Jones, they sure didn’t do it for Ian Thorpe did they?
Females in sport already struggle to get any sort of media attention let alone something positive. Females in sport already earn less, often have to hold down jobs outside of their training regimes just to support themselves to do what they love (think elite Netball). Yet any opportunity the media get they will bring them down.
What would this be doing to not only her self esteem but to those that she is most certainly a role model too.
I can only imagine how devasting this would be to her whilst she she is trying to focus on bringing home a medal for this country. As the first Australian swimmer to go to 4 Olympics she should be celebrated. I would love to see one of these journalist get in a swim-suit and in the same poses and see how perfect they looked.
I hope for Leisel’s own personal triumph that she does bring home a medal so she can be as mature as those bullying her now and say “ner ner ner ner ner ner”
I congratulate every person that has come out in support of her today and every single person that has bad mouthed her should be ashamed of themselves.
What gives anyone the right to say these nasty, nasty things?
loading...
Never-mind her weight, look how unfit she it. It’s a disgrace. She is obviously relying on her genes and ability. What a terrible role model.
loading...
Are you being sarcastic? You have to be, right? SHE QUALIFIED FOR THE OLYMPICS! And yes, I am yelling! It would be impossible for her to be unfit and qualify for the Olympics. I would kill to bethat unfit!
Leave the poor girl alone and lets celebrate how awesome she is for QUALIFYING FORTHE FREAKING OLYMPICS, AGAIN! Go Leisel!
loading...
You are so right, Sarah in Sydney. This whole issue is disgusting. And these commenters should be ashamed of themselves and their narrow-minded attitudes.
loading...
Yes completely unfit – how she managed to blitz all those time trials to qualify for her FOURTH Olympics to become I believe the first Australian to ever do so and if she wins just ONE medal in London, she will equal Ian Thorpes record medal haul, I just don’t know how she lives with herself being so obviously disgustingly UNFIT.
Sheesh the nerve of the woman!
loading...
I smell a troll.. But in the event that Daisy/Anonymous are not, I’m just embarrassed for you.
Leisl deserves every medal she has won.
loading...
I smell a troll.. But in the event that Daisy/Anonymous are not, I’m just embarrassed for you instead.
Leisel deserves every medal she has won.
loading...
No no I think Anon was being scarastic. Daisy on te other hand is the troll
loading...
Gosh, i will have to change my name! I would never say something like that!
loading...
As a mother of a young swimmer I am disgusted that do called journalists can make such uninformed statements.
If they only knew just how physically and mentally tough it is to make it in this sport he would be ashamed. Let alone being at the absolute top for 12 years. It takes a very special person to be able to achieve this.
Unfit???? Are you serious???? How about he train 10 pool sessions of between 2 to 3 hours each, plus gym, plus core strength training mixed with yoga style stretches to maximize her range of movement. We are talking in excess of 25 – 30 hours training EVERY week.
What will this do to her self esteem? What gives anyone the right to publicly comment on how she looks?? I know from experience that many female swimmers are extremely self conscious about their bodies – about their physique being so muscular and not lean, about their broad shoulders and muscley legs. And then someone decides it’s Ok to make a national sport out of it.
Liesel, you are a champion. Be proud and live your life how you see fit. I admire your longevity in the sport because I know just what a brutal sport it is.
loading...
Articles such as this one are turning the story to body image. It was never about body image, rather athleticism. That’s all! If the story had been that she looked fitter than ever and a perfect specimen of health and fitness it would be equally newsworthy. Let’s keep it in the sporting world.
loading...
“Why are we talking about Liesel Jones’ weight?”
Why indeed, MM team. You tell us.
loading...
Yes dear, if you say so.
loading...
Hey Cold, MM’s editor Jamila has addressed this question further down the comments – about half way
loading...
Tall poppy syndrome much? This is the most ridiculous thing ever! Clearly qualifying for 4 Olympics isn’t enough for some…
loading...
correct me if I’m wrong, but to be over in Londen right now, wouldn’t she had to of QUALIFIED for the Olympics!!! Discussing how she looks is just plain rude and nasty in my opinion.
loading...
This is why people comment about an “elite” athlete’s appearance. Taxpayers stump up for the glorified few to go and compete and for what? http://theconversation.edu.au/money-well-spent-the-olympic-dash-for-taxpayers-cash-7618 Artists, musicians, scientists, doctors, vets, astronauts, teachers, writers, nurses, police officers, 1001 others do not get the sort of largesse that sportspeople do. Why not? Are they not as worthy?
loading...
I wonder if Liesl could be pregnant? Most of her ‘weight’ seems concentrated around her midriff. Seems to me to be a logical explanation anyway.
loading...
Wow how helpful, the girl is slightly larger than she used to be so she must be pregnant! Give the poor girl a break
loading...
Brooke, as far as I’m concerned, pregnancy is nothing but a positive thing. I was simply suggesting an alternative explanation for all the “OMG she’s let herself go” commentators. There was nothing at all negative about my comment. Unlike yours.
loading...
The depths to which Aussie journalism has sunk.. Leisel’s ‘fat’ photos are like something out of one of those trashy women’s magazines. She is a sports athlete for god’s sake who has qualified for the Olympics… Give her a BREAK!
loading...
This will be her fourth Olympics. I think she’s obviously doing something right don’t you???????????

Boycott fairfax
loading...
Oh for gods sake. Everyone is running the story. Including this website! By your reasoning we should also boycott mamamia
loading...
Smile more
loading...
Sorry, but as an elite athlete, you are required to meet certain standards regarding skin folds etc. We are investing massively in getting these athletes over there, the least we can hope that they are training to be in peak physical condition when they compete, otherewise where is our return on investment.
God, I remember al the noise over how overweight Ian Thorpe was on his comeback and how the media were all over him. And why not, it is related to performance. If it wasnt, they wouldnt take and track skin folds every single day.
It isnt because she is a woman either. It makes news for any elite athlete if they present even slightly out of shape. It is commented on in AFL pre season as well, when a player looks like he has been in a good paddock over the summer.
loading...
Absolutely. Who cares if she qualified and is swimming in form, SKIN FOLDS! THORPEY! RETURN ON MY INVESTMENT!
loading...
Sorry? Are you talking to me? Is there a point to your rant?
I strung a few coherent points together that reflect my opinion on the subject at hand, based upon my knowledge of the workings of elite sporting organisations organisations like the AFL and AIS. You on the other hand seem to just grunt and repeat a few key words of mine. Did you miss your medication today?
loading...
You make no sense at all, Wounded Bull. Skin folds? You have to be trolling. Seriously. Either that or you’re just a really stupid little man.
loading...
Lol, I get sin binned weekly for nothing, and comments like this are allowed to stand. Um, consistency moderator.
For your info blargh, I spend a lot of time working with an AFL club, obviously fat % / skin folds are a regularly measured metric for elite athletes. Get off you couch, get moving and get your facts straight ffs.
loading...
You’re right, WB. But have you reported the post? And why bother to engage with someone who has insulted you?
Blargh, get some manners & learn how to discuss things in a civilised fashion.
loading...
You asked someone if they have taken their medication today. If you want to criticize other people’s comments then you should look at your own first.
loading...
hands up who has no idea what a skin fold test is. If you want to make someone look stupid Blargh, it pays to first make sure you aren’t being that exact thing yourself by not knowing what you are talking about. Google ‘Skin Fold Test’ and then eat humble pie,
loading...
I don’t understand. She qualified. She has earned her tax payer funded spot in the Olympic team. Who gives a shit what she looks like, she can CLEARLY perform at the level that is required to represent our country.
You are judging her performance on what she looks like. Not her actual.. performance.. to date.
It makes NO sense!
loading...
Do you really think she could not be in better shape? It’s great she made it but she is only 26 and does not need to be carrying that extra weight. Oh well, I’m sure she’ll be scoffing down some doughnuts after the race.
loading...
Not “we”, it’s “you”, the media talking about it! Leave her alone!
loading...
Oh come on! She’s an elite athlete! People have to dissect every little thing about others and it’s sickening! Black Caviar isn’t exactly the Jennifer Hawkins of horses, weighing at 620 odd kg, around 100 odd kilos heavier than your average race horse! Don’t expect a top class, power house swimmer like Liesel Jones to be either! But being a swimmer myself I have plenty of photos diving and it is the most unflattering angle!
It’s ridiculous that this has even made news.
loading...
Shame on u reporter. Jealousy doesn’t make u look good. Take a mirror out and look at how disgusting u are to pass judgement.
loading...
