As far as bad luck goes, these three brothers from Sydney have pretty much had it all.

In the space of a few years, Jarrod, 19, Blake, 16, and Dylan Lawrence, 14, have had to deal with more heartbreak than most people have to deal with in a lifetime.

Six years ago, their father passed away unexpectedly. Then, just a few weeks ago, their mother Natalie also died suddenly from two brain aneurisms.

And if that’s not enough, the youngest of the brothers – Dylan – had a tumour removed from his brain two years ago and is still dealing with ongoing treatment.

Over the past couple of days, the boys’ story has featured on the Channel 9 program A Current Affair. On Monday night, reporter Brady Halls told the story of the brothers – how they had been left with no life insurance, a sizable mortgage and no money in the bank – and how the oldest brother Jarrod was preparing to take on the responsibility of running the house.

“There’s still a mortgage, a very big one, we’ve got electricity bills, water bills, gas bills. I don’t know how we’re going to pay for it at the moment,” Jarrod said on Monday night.

The boys with their mum, Natalie.

“I think it’s unfair in a way but we’ll be right. I can look after the boys and do the best I can hopefully,” he said.

And that’s where this story gets a little bit happier.

After an appeal on the program, Brady Halls caught up with the boys again to tell them they’d been able to raise almost $600,000 to help them with living costs.

Through donations from corporations and individuals, the boys will now be able to pay off their mortgage and not worry about bills piling up.

Speaking again to the program, Jarrod – who is studying to become a primary school teacher – said: “It just means the world.”

“(We’re) so grateful for everyone who donated, it just means so much for me and the boys.”

“It’s just unbelievable. I’m speechless, I really am.”

We think so too.
