rudd 380x318 UPDATED. Kevin to Julia: Game on

Kevin Rudd

UPDATE:

FRIDAY: Kevin Rudd has announced he will contest the leadership on Monday at 10am and given a commitment that he will leave the issue for good if he should lose.

“Today in Australia we face some serious challenges.

All indications are we are heading for the rocks at the next election, leaving the country to ravages of Abbott, the most conservative, most right wing Government in Australian history.

That’s why I am here today … things need to change.

Rightly or wrongly, Julia has lost the trust of the Australian people and starting on Monday I have decided to restore that trust. I have decided to contest ballot on Monday.

I want to finish job the Australian people elected me to do when I was elected by them to become PM.

Many of my colleagues have encouraged me to do just that. I was elected in 2007 to govern for all Australians and that is what we did. The record is a good record.

I’ve spoken up for democracy everywhere in the world, but it’s most important we have one at home, in my party. Australia’s are sick and tired of outside forces calling the shots. Our greatest gift of democracy and to democracy is the secret ballot. And we should have that on Monday. We should have freedom of intimidation from factions. Their pre-selections should not be threatened by how they vote.

No one should live in fear. I call for a secret ballot. A truly, secret ballot. I would call on the PM to ensure that candidates, and perhaps their might be more, have the opportunity to speak and address the party before the ballot is taken so people can make an informed choice.

Let me tell you about one of number of things I got wrong. We removed the right of the party to elect the cabinet. I think I made the wrong call. If elected as PM, I will return that power to the party!

We want the power of the factions to be transferred to each and every individual member of the parliamentary party. That’s the Australian way. I’m not prepared to stand idly by … if we don’t change, the Labor Party is going to end up in opposition.

We will all end up on the Opposition backbench. That’s the cold, stark reality for everybody.

Mr Abbott is a man who has proved he has neither temperament, the vision of the experience to lead.

He has both feet planted firmly in the past.

His view on climate change is from the 1960s. His view of the NBN from the 1990s.

Then there is his attitude on women which goes back to 1950s.

He’s not, as they say in The Castle, an ideas man. He is philosophically opposed to using Govt to build a nation, his vision is just plain extreme.

Beating Mr Abbott is achievable.

I have never met a more negative man in Australian politics than Mr Abbott. This is the single, most negative force in Australian politics that we have ever seen. The importance of beating him is paramount. So much of what we have achieved is at risk, and what we will achieve in the future is at risk.

A Labor Party with Labor values doesn’t need a Greens party to tell it how to protect the environment.

If I should lose I would go to the back bench and I would not challenge Julia a second time. I would continue to work for my community in Griffith.”

THURSDAY: Prime Minister Julia Gillard has delivered her first address following Rudd’s resignation. She called a double-or-nothing gamble for herself and Rudd. If either should lose, she says, they should revoke any future claim to the leadership.

She then took the remarkable step of ‘absolving’ any and all journalists from their commitment to confidence and asked them to speak up if any of them had ever heard her speak ill of Kevin Rudd or be disloyal behind his back during the time she was PM.

Here is some of what she had to say:

“I have decided that at 10am Monday morning a ballot for the Labor leadership will be conducted.

I have formed this view that we need a ballot in order to settle this question once and for all. More importantly, it is in the interests of the Australian nation.

For far too long we have seen squabbling which has obscured Government achievements and what we are doing to build a stronger and fairer nation.

This has moved to a distraction and that’s not good enough. Australians are rightly sick of this and want it brought to an end.

Only Labor can provide the leadership we need, and Labor  can only do that if we proceed with unity.

I will renominate for the Labor leadership and expect to receive the support of my colleagues.

If, against my expectation, I do not receive that support I will go to the backbench and renounce any further claim to the Labor leadership.

And I would ask the same of Kevin Rudd. If he loses that ballot he should commit and renounce any further claims to the leadership and act in the interests of the ALP.

Under my leadership I believe we have been securing the big reforms. We have so much more work to do

I note Kevin Rudd has consistently referred to the need to defeat Tony Abbott. Well let me make this clear. I believe I can lead the ALP to that victory provided we get on with the job.

Government is about more than just electioneering. It’s about making each and every day count and having the discipline and the effort necessary to get the job done.

My focus is on the future, not on the past but let me say some things about 2010. Kevin Rudd’s Government entered a period of paralysis. In my view Kevin Rudd is an excellent campaigner, indeed a remarkable campaigner. But Government requires different skills. Consistency, purpose, method, consultation. It requires you to lead a big team and lead it well. Kevin Rudd failed to do that.

That’s what motivated me in 2010. Out of respect for Kevin Rudd at that time, I did not canvas every detail. I used the terminology the ‘Government had lost its way’.

There has been a long-running destabilisation campaign here to get to this point. I don’t seek to dwell on that.

It is now absolutely evident Rudd is returning to Australia to ask me for a leadership ballot. If I can make one political comment, I don’t believe it is fair to Anna Bligh for this to drift on day after day with no resolution in sight.”

Kevin Rudd delivered his second press conference before the Prime Minister delivered her first, after 9am AEDT. He said he had yet to make up his mind about challenging for the leadership of the Labor Party, but did not hold back.

“I am very pleased and encouraged by positve support and wishes from many to contest the leadership.

They regard me as the best prospect to lead the ALP to the next election, to save the ALP at those elections and save country from ravages of an Abbott Government.

Frankly I have been shocked and disappointed by the tone and content of the intensely personal attacks lodged against me. Whatever our differences in politics I do not believe that these sorts of vicious personal attacks have a place in political life. We all have a place to preserve the fabric of decency.

Therefore I have been shocked, disappointed. I would say to you and urge my own supporters not to retaliate or engage in this vicious sort of attack.

In Australia today people are sick and tired of the politics of division and sick and tired overall. As we know, Mr Abbott is the national master of that.

Therefore it is important that we begin to cultivate and develop a new sense of unity.

Bottom line is, this question of the future of the leadership of our party and country is not about personality. It’s about trust. It’s also about policy and vision. I’m proud of the fact, that when you look closely at what I have achieved, the achievements are formidable.”

Mr Rudd then went on to list his major policy achievements and what he would focus on if he ever led the party in the future, including education, manufacturing and small businesses. He then delivered a final uppercut to the PM:

“I do not believe – I do not believe – PM Gillard can lead the ALP to success in the next election. And as they say in the classics folks, I gotta zip,” he said before leaving to catch a flight back to Australia.

Here’s how the story played out to begin with yesterday:

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has just resigned after weeks of intense leadership speculation in the Federal Australian Labor Party. He resigned from a press conference in Washington and said he would ‘never be part of a stealth attack‘ on a sitting Prime Minister and described the current leadership saga as ‘nothing more than a soap opera’.

Here is a full transcript of his speech:

While I am sad to leave this office I am sadder still it has come to this. The last time I resigned in a position of public office was when I was Prime Minister of Australia. Regrettably there have been some similar factors at play today.

It is time for some plain speaking on this. The truth is I can only serve as Foreign Minister if I have the confidence of Prime Minister Gillard and her senior ministers. In recent days Minister Crean and a number of other faceless men have publicly attacked my integrity and therefore my fitness to serve as a minister of government.

When challenged today on these attacks Prime Minister Gillard chose not to repudiate them. I can only reluctantly conclude that she therefore shares these views.

The simple truth is that I cannot continue to serve as Foreign Minister if I do not have Prime Minister Gillard’s support. I therefore believe the only honorable thing, and therefore the only honorable course of action, is for me to resign.

And I do so with a genuinely heavy heart and after much personal reflection.

There are other factors, too, that I had to take into consideration today.

The truth is, the Australian people regard this whole affair as little better than a soap opera – and they are right. And under current circumstances, I won’t be part of it.

It is also, I believe, a distraction from the real business of Government. I also believe it’s affected the business community. I agree with recent statements made by peak bodies to this effect.

It is important that business confidence is maintained in Australia. The economy and jobs are core to what any responsible Government is about.

I also believe that this ongoing saga is bad for my good friend, Anna Bligh, as she fights the fight of her life in Queensland. She’s a great premier, she’s a good friend and I believe the good people of Queensland deserve some space over the coming month as they make up their mind on a very important decision over the future of Queensland, my home state, the state I’m very proud to be from.

The truth is, I also feel very uncomfortable doing this from Washington and not in Australia, but I don’t feel as if I have a choice given the responsibilities I have before me over the days ahead here in Washington, in London on the future of Somalia and piracy in the Indian Ocean, and in Tunis on the future of Syria. These are important challenges for the world where a responsible Australian voice needs to be heard. A voice which I have sought to inject in my period as Foreign Minister on these core challenges.

Under no circumstances do I want Australia’s international reputation brought into disrepute because of this ongoing saga.

Therefore, Ambassador Beazley will discharge my functions here on my behalf in Washington tomorrow and the Permanent Secretary of my Department, Dennis Richardson, will represent me in London and Tunis. I will return home to Brisbane tomorrow, arriving back there on Friday morning.

Over the days ahead, i will be consulting openly and honestly with my family, with my community and with my parliamentary colleagues, taking their counsel on what I should do next and what my next step should be. I will then make a full statement to the Australian people on my future before parliament resumes next Monday.

I deeply believe that if the ALP, a party of which i have been a proud member for more than 30 years, is to have the best future for our nature then it must change fundamentally its culture, and to end the power of faceless men. Australia must be governed by the people. Not by the factions. But I can promise you this – there is no way – no way – that I will ever be part of a stealth attack on a sitting PM who was elected by the people. We all know that what happened then was wrong, and it must never happen again.

He ended the press conference without taking questions, saying there was “much, much to do”.

His family’s response:

Ms Rein also told the Brisbane Times: “I’m immensely proud of Kevin and his contribution as Foreign Minister and I’m really looking forward to giving him a hug when he gets home.”

Abbott’s response:

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said: “Kevin Rudd has confirmed two things – that the faceless men are running the Labor Party and that the instability at the top of this government is damaging our country.”

“Kevin Rudd’s statement tonight confirms that this government is unworthy to continue in office.”

Julia Gillard’s response:

The Prime Minister hasn’t fronted the media but released a short statement saying she was disappointed Kevin Rudd never raised his resignation with her personally – his resignation letter arrived at her office at the precise moment he was live on television – and would address the media in full in the morning. It is believed Ms Gillard will announce a leadership ballot tomorrow, which would be held on Monday.

Her statement in full:

Today Kevin Rudd has tendered his resignation as Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Mr Rudd was a strong and effective advocate for Australia’s interests overseas.

During his period of service as Foreign Minister there were many achievements. He strongly pursued Australia’s interests in the world.

I am disappointed that the concerns Mr Rudd has publicly expressed this evening were never personally raised with me, nor did he contact me to discuss his resignation prior to his decision.

I plan to hold a press conference tomorrow to make a further statement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan launches extraordinary attack on Rudd:

Prime Minister Gillard and I and the overwhelming majority of our colleagues have been applying our Labor values to the policy challenges in front of us and we’re succeeding despite tremendous political obstacles. For the sake of the movement, the Government and the Australians which it represents, we have refrained from criticism to date.

However for too long, Kevin Rudd has been putting his own self-interest ahead of the interests of the broader Labor movement and the country as a whole, and that needs to stop. The Party has given Kevin Rudd all the opportunities in the world and he wasted them with his dysfunctional decision making and his deeply demeaning attitude towards other people including our caucus colleagues. He sought to tear down the 2010 campaign, deliberately risking an Abbott Prime Ministership, and now he undermines the Government at every turn.

He was the Party’s biggest beneficiary then its biggest critic; but never a loyal or selfless example of its values and objectives. For the interests of the movement and of working people, there is too much at stake in our economy and in the political debate for the interests of the movement and working people to be damaged by somebody who does not hold any Labor values.

Julia has the overwhelming support of our colleagues. She is tough, determined, forward-looking, and has a good Labor heart. She has a consultative, respectful relationship with caucus while Kevin Rudd demeaned them. She’s cleaned up a lot of the mess he left her and has established a good, Labor agenda. She’s delivering major reforms, and getting things done that her predecessor could not.

Colleagues are sick of Kevin Rudd driving the vote down by sabotaging policy announcements and undermining our substantial economic successes. The Labor Party is not about a person, it’s about a purpose. That’s something Prime Minister Gillard has always known in her heart but something Kevin Rudd has never understood.

In the meantime…

Craig Emerson, presently the Trade Minister, will act as Australia’s Foreign Minister and take on the responsibilities immediately.

Kevin Rudd wins office during the November 2007 Federal election.

I don’t see what else Kevin Rudd could have done quite honestly, and still keep his dignity intact. Frankly I hope he goes on to better things overseas, he’s too bloody good for Australian politics.

The thought of a Tony Abbott government makes me want to pour myself a VERY large nightcap. And dream of emigrating :/

The Labor party should be ashamed of themselves. This is not the way to run a country. I don’t think I even know what anyone’s policies are anymore since all they talk about is that they personally are more credible or entitled or have more integrity than each other.

And politicians are so quick to come down with harsh criticism on big corporations, banks, airlines etc when they can’t manage their stakeholders interests properly. Pot/kettle anyone??

I am utterly tired of Rudd’s self promotion and sense of entitlement at the expense of his party. Remember that Gillard was not the instigator of his demise; that was as a result of his own party frankly finding him too difficult to work with AND we have had an election since then. What is there to be proud of ??????

You can’t suggest that Australia voted her in as prime minister during that election though, she got there via negotiation with the independents – hardly a convincing approval of leadership from us, their employers.

We don’t vote in Prime Ministers, that’s not our political system. We vote In a party and the party selects the leader.

I have argued this myself. But I think it is clear by their response over Kevin’s demise that the vast majority of Australians neither understand nor agree with this aspect of our political system.

But the Australian people didn’t convincingly ‘approve’ anyone at the last election… The Liberal/National coalition couldn’t form a Government either…

I am sick of this tripe about ‘getting there’ through negotiation with the independents. Everyone was in the same boat. And that’s how the (very well documented and established) system works.

If you have a problem with how this Government was formed, then perhaps you should also blame the people of Australia for not all agreeing with one another, not just members of our Parliament for compromising in order to ensure we have some semblance of governance and opposition.

Or perhaps we should just have one party. That’s turned out great in the past…

Imagine if Julia Gillard’s partner Tim Mathesion sent out a Tweet tonight saying how he was so effing proud of her. The guy would be crucified and so would she. So why do people applaud Rudd’s wife and daughter smugly congratulating their husband and father on successfully undermining his own political party in such a self serving fashion?
There is no end to the double standards at play here. Poor Gillard. And poor us too, if Rudd gets rewarded for his non stop dummy spit

Kevin Rudd blah, blah, blah, Julia Gillard, blah, blah, blah, Tony Abbott, blah, blah, blah, Barry O’Farrel, blah, blah, blah. Get rid of the lot and install a bunch of primary school kids to run the country and the state, they’d be a lot more grown up about it and the insults would be funnier!

P.S I would have added in the leader of the opposition in NSW if I even knew who it was. This former political junkie is so over politics that I don’t even care who it is!

Can someone please start running our country instead of using my hard earned tax paying money for ridiculous school yard games?! Love to know how many airconditioning or heating systems for our schools would be paid for instead of the telephone bills our pollies are racking up calling their “buddies” to support their egos. Surely we have more important issues in our country to focus our engery on.

I’m a Liberal voter through & through but have massive respect for Kevin Rudd. He did the honourable thing today for the sake of the country & respect of the office of Prime Minister.

He NEVER should have been ousted the way he was by his own party. He was elected by the people for the people and it is disgustingly arrogant that the faceless men of the Labor party ousted him the way they did 18 months ago. Julia, did lie. That is an undeniable fact. She isn’t popular, isn’t effective and the Labor Party are oblivious to the sentiment of the nation. That is why they are being wiped out state by state, seat by seat. They must change if they have any hope of retaining power. But they won’t change and in due time the Liberals will be returned to power. Just a question of Tony or Malcom really.

Kevin, you’re a class act and i would have consider giving my vote to you. Sussex street has ensured the party will NEVER get my vote now.

So we don’t like that no one articulated why Rudd was ‘ousted’ for the last twenty months. And now, when enough is enough, we are being given an unprecedented insight into how the Rudd Government was (or wasn’t working), but we don’t like that either?

I actually think it says a lot of the character of people like Wayne Swan who have tried for so long to avoid articulating the long rumored dysfunction and micro-management favoured by Rudd. After all, we are always bleating that we want our politicians to be honest with us…

Maintaining a professional facade didn’t stop the trouble maker in the background. Why not show Rudd for what he is?

As an australian resident (though not australian citizen), I am so glad I don’t have to vote, I would have serious difficulties deciding who to vote for in the near future, as well as I would have had in the past. Kevin Rudd said exactly how I’ve been looking at australian politics in recent years ” a little better than a soap opera”.
Unfortunately, politicians here don’t seem to be very passionate about real issues of the people of Australia, but in attacking each other about how politics is done, and that on a daily basis.

If Labor/Rudd/Gillard can wait until after July, we’ll hopefully avoid an Abbott Prime Ministership – increasing the tax free threshold to $18k should ensure Labor gets back in!

    Kate!

When I read all the negative posts about our PM, I really dont understand where all the anger comes from. The stuff about her being a liar seems willfully ignorant of the reality of leading a minority government, and people seem to have a deliberate blind spot about all the things she has actually achieved. It seems to be acceptable to spout fact-free hateful rhetoric when it comes to Julia Gillard and really suspect its because shes a woman.

Maybe Im naive but I also think K Rudd has copped a lot of undeserved flack, and a good deal of the angst around his supposed leadership ambitions has been generated by the media, who have been intent on turbo-charging a story that has to date had little more than innuendo and speculation holding it up.

I can’t support this decision as brave, or standing up to the faceless factions. Someone else has said it, by leaving during an important work trip, he is acting unprofessionally. All I can see is that he is doing it for his best interests; not for the good of the country. I think that is despicable.

Whether it was by stealth or not, there was a reason he was ousted to begin with. And I believe he had a part in all the cabinet leaks that have been so destablising, because he is a sore loser. This has made me so angry. Why can’t they all grow up and act like mature adults!

I know people are thinking that this will hand the government over to Tony Abbott, which makes me sick. He is just as bad.

I’m in no way a cast-iron Labor supporter (I would happily vote Liberal if Malcolm Turnbull were the leader of that party), but Mr Rudd’s lack of loyalty to his office, his party and his colleagues is telling. He is a public servant, paid from our taxes. He would do well to remember that and grow up.

I certainly have problems with Labor’s record of the last few years and with things Ms Gillard has done as the Prime Minister, but I doubt she’ll quit in a fit of pique. I also don’t doubt her commitment to what she considers ‘Labor values’ and to her office and the people she works with. Every politician needs a larger-than-usual dose of ego I’m sure, but you can’t just take on/discard certain offices as a public servant (which is what politicians are) without doing a great deal of damage.

I’m so over the mainstream media speculation, sh*t stirring and innuendo on this that I don’t know what to think anymore. I’ve always liked Rudd – I thought he could have been better as PM as could Gillard but thought he was in the right job as foreign minister and Australia will be worse off without him in that role.

So much of this has been stirred up by the media, ‘faceless’ men, the likes of Simon Crean and of course the opposition. I can’t help but thinking the outcome could have been quite different if all those elements were removed.

That response from Wayne Swan is just plain nasty – I feel quite differently about him now!

It is a real shame for the government and for the Labor party – if only they’d kept it together I believe they could have achieved great things and even won the next election.

Gillard is not perfect, but she’s strong and purposeful and she better just get on with it now if she wants to prove herself. In the face of a lot of crap (especially a minority government) she has actually achieved quite a lot. I certainly don’t think Abbott would have done any better.

Let’s see what happens to the Opposition leading up to the next election… I mean can they really win with Abbott? Maybe the media will start stirring up a leadership spill for them next once this drama is over (oh and I hope Turnbull puts his hand up for that one!).

I think Kevin has shown an ridiculous amount of ego today. When one feels they are unsupported by their boss and they feel they need to resign the process would normally be to speak directly and in person with your boss and discuss the situation and then if you feel no other option is avaialble to you then resign. You do not call a press conference at 1:30 am (in time for the Australian prime time news) whilst in a foreign country, in your role as Foreign Minister. His speech sounded “me, me, me”.

In this whole process there seems to be so little respect for the fact that this is distracting from what they need to get on with and that is running the country.

I tell you what, I’m not necessarily thrilled with Prime Minister Gillard, but this has made me definitely anti Rudd. The way he has behaved has been the sole reason for the leadership speculation. All the non denials “I’m very happy as Foreign Minister” just fueled the fire, and the ALP and more importantly, the Australian people are paying for it. And let’s not forget that Kevin Rudd was only ever elected by a group of people to represent an electorate. The leadership of the party is no guarantee. I’m starting to get the distinct impression Rudd’s desire for revenge is more important to him than the ALP in government. The idea that he is trying to ‘distance himself from the soap opera’ is laughable, at best.

Also let’s not forget that the general public hated Rudd when Gillard took over. That’s why they decided to do it. And now those same people are baying for Gillard’s blood.

I’m disappointed more than anything. There was such high hopes when Rudd was elected. All that this behaviour will result in is Tony Abbott as Prime Minister. And that saddens me greatly.

We live in a democratic society, and Kevin Rudd is still the last popularly elected PM. J Gillard lied to the electorate and sucked up to minority parties to satisfy her own political ambitions. Her current political bad karma is nobodies fault but her own. She committed a coup to become PM and in other countries could have been charged with treason. Just for the record I’m as level headed as they come, Gillard came to power based on back room politics, not the vote of the people and it was pretty clear what the Australian people thought of this at the last election. Her ability to form gov’t was based on the convention that the sitting party get “1st dibs” on speaking to independent candidates and she was willing to sell out for her and her backers polictical ambitions. What’s actually wrong with politics is that by the time the public get to hold the gov’t accountable for the lies told during an election, it’s to late to do anything. Gillard can’t be trusted she proved that by her “no carbon tax stand” but again has sold that out for the power. I really don’t like Tony Abbott either but I believe Gillard is bad for this country.

Sorry, CJ – the Rudd Labor government was elected in 2007. Since then, we had the 2010 election, in which Gillard led the party to the election and formed a minority government with the support of the cross-bench MPs, who have made it clear that their agreements do not extend to Rudd.

No, Ms Gillard has not committed treason. The party can select whomever they choose to be the leader, from amongst their elected representatives. The Australian people DO NOT elect the Prime Minister, they vote for a Member of Parliament in their electorate and whichever party has the most MPs forms government.

And please, long may it continue and save us from the complete idiocy that is the US-style direct election of the President – a bigger waste of money I have never seen.

        CJ

Ok everybody take a step back and I will again explain my point. Julia Gillard formed a minority government based on agreements she made with independant and greens candidates- after the election was decided. Labor itself did not get the majority of the votes- pure and simple. For the record I believe in majority rules and if it doesn’t we go again. For better or worse democracy is about a popularity contest. While I get that this is annoying, its the price you pay for living in a resonable democratic society. (if that doesn’t work I suggest a fire starting comp a la Survivor!!)

As for my comments on treason- I did say that in other countries- I did not say Australia, but I do stand by my comments and do believe the labor party deserve all the backlast at the ballots they get. Hope that clears things up.

I’m annoyed do people forget that we have had an election since Julia ousted Kevin. Yes that was unprecendented and underhanded but lets now look at the current government record since the last election …
    1. Carbon Tax has been legislated which will eventually move us to an ETS which is what Kevin Rudd failed to do, a double dissolution at the time would of been a more acceptable an honourable decision
    2. Mining Tax now legislated through proper negiotiation with the key parties and yes it is watered down but remember there was no negiotation under Kevin Rudd
    3. Private health reforms
    4. NDIS

It was and still is well known that Kevin Rudd is not a negiotater and is unable to get the job done.
People may not like what happened but an election has been held since then and a minority government was the result and as it turns out the most amount of legislation has moved through the parliament. Julia may not sound right, wear the right clothes, have the right hair do but surely she has been productive and “getting the job done” rather than grandstanding and talking about how wonderful she is!
Kevin Rudd did a great job as foriegn minister and clearly has a passion for world politics, my hope is that he stays in the backbench until the next election and retires to a possible position in the UN or the like. I wish him all the best.
He has clearly been undermining the current PM for awhile now and although states that he won’t be a part of a “stealth attack” its obvious to me that he already has been.

Totally disagree. He failed on so many levels. Masses of empty promises and wasted money – 2020 summit to name but 1…I’m so glad he has gone

All Governments have waste. But his achievements are many. 2020 is the biggest failure you could list? It was inconsequential, but it’s hardly the worst ‘worst’ I could think of! His bests were freaking brilliant though.

              Here’s a few:

              1. He smartly used our resources (yes, some of which was in the bank from the Libs) to make Australia’s economy the absolute envy of the world during a deep global financial crisis which took the bottom out of economies worldwide.

              2. The ‘school halls program’ had its problems *BUT* I worked directly on it in Queensland and saw the good it did for those schools. Not every state did a ‘NSW’ and borked the delivery on some sites. QLD I know well and only had 21 complaints across 2500 BER projects.

              3. Saying sorry. But that was easy. You’d wonder why no one ever said it.

              4. Kicking off the National Broadband Network. Farsighted nation building. Love it.

              5. His Government brought in equal rights for same sex couples and people in every respect except marriage. Marriage would have been nice, but it was a good start.

              6. The mining tax was a brilliant idea. Shame it never got up and was watered down so much under Gillard.

              7. Paid Parental leave was brought in.

That’s off the top of my head.

No it wasn’t the biggest failure I could list – just one that immediately sprang to mind. Where did I say it was the biggest failure he made? Above I’m just disagreeing with your statement that his achievements were massive and your list below does nothing to change my mind. I’ll give you the “sorry” though. That really should have been done earlier.

I disagree Rick re the impact of Rudd’s achievements, particularly during his PMship. Yes, the Apology was necessary and to be truly commended. The response to the GFC on the otherhand was a success due to the strategies of former Treasury Secretary Dr Ken Henry and in part the Reserve Bank. I actually think if he’d checked his abominable ego after the last election, he would have made an election winning contribution to the Labor party, his talents clearly lie in foreign policy, but after today’s events I fear the nightmarish scenario of an Abbott Government may as well be written into the history books.

Gaah the Mining Tax was the idea of Dr Henry under the Henry tax review. The BER’ s success is a result of the excellent former Education Minister and devastating DPM a Ms. Julia Gillard. As someone who worked closely with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet during Rudd’s leadership, all this ill directed praise towards the implementation, or lack thereof, of Rudd’s policies is doing my head in.

Poppy – with similar work experience behind me… I TOTALLY agree. Rudd is very successful at manipulating his media profile. The fact that none of his colleagues or bureaucrats want to work with him speaks volumes to me about his ability as PM.

Her so called private health reform will do nothing but drive the price of private health cover up for those of us who already struggle to pay for it, becuase those “high income earner” won’t be able to afford to pay for it once the price of everything increases under the carbon tax, which she strongly denied she would implement at the last election- remember that?? I believe strongly in the benefits of private Heath insurance and, her idea of high income earning is a joke. As is by the way the fact that her salary is higher than Obama’s & he runs the whole free world. Just saying.

JC – Why should taxpayers pay for a rebate for Private Health Insurance contributors? Private Health Insurance, like any insurance, is a choice. Why should low income workers pay for high income workers to belong to a Private Health Fund? This should never have been introduced. Your views on salaries of the PM and Obama are irrelevant. Would you object if Abbott received the same salary?

How was he wrecking the party from within? He originally got them into power, he received a knife in the back because he wouldn’t bow to the factions. Julia never supported him once he became one of her Ministers. He was a brilliant, hardworking foreign minister.

I actually believe that they have used and abused KRudd and I don’t blame him for being pissed.

Is it just me or is KRudd the Newt Gingrich of Australian politics?

A man whose ego is so large that he thinks we can’t live without him instead he is making politics (or what dignity it has left) a laughing stock and destabilising the Labor party.
