Former Frasier star Kelsey Grammer and his wife Kayte have welcomed a baby daughter, but the happy news also came with the announcement of the miscarriage of their son.

The couple welcomed Faith Evangeline Elisa on the 13th of July. It’s Kelsey’s fifth child – he has four from previous relationships.

In a statement the couple said:

“Early this morning Kayte gave birth to Faith Evangeline Elisa Grammer.  We are thrilled.  She was 6 lbs. 2oz. when she entered the world at 1am on the 13th of July in the year 2012.  Mother and child are in excellent health.

We were ecstatic earlier this year, when we announced that Kayte was carrying twins.  Tragically we lost the little boy shortly thereafter.  This was not something we cared to make known publicly at the time.  It was unspeakably painful and we know that people will understand our desire to keep the news private then, as we know they will respect our privacy in this matter now.  A glorious birth with a lingering sadness is ours today.  We choose to celebrate the life that has been given us.  We proudly introduce our Faith to the world today looking forward to the days ahead and the children yet to come.”

Fifty-seven-year-old Kelsey and 31-year-old Kayte married in February 2011.

Whilst this is incredibly sad/happy news, this portion of the statement really grated on my nerves:

“This was not something we cared to make known publicly at the time.  It was unspeakably painful and we know that people will understand our desire to keep the news private then, as we know they will respect our privacy in this matter now.”

If you want people to respect your privacy, keep whatever it is PRIVATE!!!

So sick of celebrities asking for privacy after they divulge sensitive information which does not belong in the public domain.

It’s not like this was a cautionary tale but another tragic loss best shared with family and close friends.

But I think people knew she was having twins? Kelsey is a very public figure, perhaps sharing such information feels normal at this point. Maybe it’s important for them to talk about it. Plus it makes sense to announce the miscarriage, so people know what happened and don’t wonder why there’s only one baby when there was meant to be two.

It’s not fool-proof sadly – I remember Jay Leno asking Courtney Cox if she was expecting twins after she’d miscarried one of them. Dampened the mood on the show when she had to awkwardly say, “No.”, in front of him and a huge audience.

This is exactly what happened to me. No one acknowledges the loss but it never leaves.

A heartfelt congratulations being sent your way and love for both your babies. We had twins 4 years ago, our son now a healthy little boy, our daughter an angel that kissed the earth very briefly. The joy and the heartache all rolled into one, we hope you feel both babies sweetness and love as time goes on xxxx

Close to my heart. We too had the joy of being told “you are having twins”. Then we had to endure losing one and holding our breath for the other one throughout my pregnancy. We have a very healthy and happy boy. He also has a little sister. They are the joys of our lives. But, there is always a little corner of our hearts reserved for our other cherub.
