Tomorrow, when I fly in, I’m coming home to a political situation that most Australians think is a dog’s breakfast. What’s happening is ugly as. It’s infuriating. Messy. I agree. It is and it needs to be sorted out.
But unlike what happened in 2010, when Australia went to bed with one prime minister and woke up to another, now we have time.
This leadership ballot is happening in caucus, the group of 103 Labor MPs and senators we elected, but that doesn’t mean it is not our vote.
We are their employers. My Dad works for me. I often remind him of that. He is my local member and I helped put him there. I walked into a church hall and in the privacy of a polling booth I put a one next to his name.
You’re all employers too. You might not be related to your employees, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have access to them. When they aren’t doing their jobs, you can tell them. When they are misbehaving, you can reprimand them.
I live in Beijing, a city with a population the size of our whole nation—twenty-two million people.
Like us, they get up in the morning. They have a shower and wonder if their favourite top is dry yet. They get dressed and go to work. They have lunch with their colleagues and bitch about HR. At the end of the day they swap heels for runners and go home. They order dinner from the grease-stained menus on the fridge, call their mum and switch on the telly.
At the same time each night on almost every free-to-air TV station all over China is the same national news broadcast. I don’t mean it’s similar, I mean the exact same show. In sync. You can flick between stations and the same guy is on your screen telling you what is going on, or at least what he’s allowed to tell you is going on.
You can’t just go, ‘this is boring, that guy’s tie is feral—I wonder what’s happening over on The Project.’
You can’t write to your local MP about it because you don’t have one and a complaint to the network is a complaint to the government.
When you watch international stations like the BBC and CNN, stories about China often disappear. The screen goes blank.
There’s no Twitter or Facebook. Don’t get me wrong, there are social media platforms and they’re epic. But in China it’s all still new and risky. People do say what they think but they worry about the consequences. Controversial posts are mysteriously removed from China’s equivalent of Twitter, Weibo. They just vanish.
We, the people of Australia, are different. We have power.
We are not a passive audience in a crowded cinema with popcorn on our laps waiting for the previews to end.
We are participants. We have a voice and I think we should bloody well use it. Get up and say something. Say it loudly. Be heard.
You might think Julia Gillard is the ant’s pants. Fab. Say it.
You might think my Dad is ace. Cool. Write it.
You might think everyone sucks. Scream it.
Tweet something. Rant on Facebook. Put a video on YouTube. Put a sign on your front fence. Have a chat with your neighbour. Tell your friends. Email your local MP. Ring them up. Stop them at the news agent and make them listen. Call your local radio station. Have a rally Vote in an online poll. Write a song about it. Get on Mamamia and say, ‘OMG she’s just saying that because she’s KRudd’s daughter.’
Look, I know the parliament can seem alien at times—believe me, it’s even weirder when you’re there—but it is not out of reach. It’s ours. We own it.
Let’s own this spill, people. Let’s make it ours. Make your MPs work for you. Tell them what you want. Because unlike my mates in China, we have no excuse for simply sitting back and letting it happen.
Jessica Rudd, is a Canberra-born, Brisbane-raised ex-lawyer, ex-campaign worker and ex-PR consultant who lives with her husband in Beijing. She has written the occasional column, a host of legal letters, countless press releases and two novels Ruby Blues and Campaign Ruby.
So, if you were in caucus, which way would you vote?
Editor’s Note: We’ve been surprised that some readers have not understood that this is an opinion piece so we thought it might be helpful to clarify a few points. Jessica Rudd is the daughter of Kevin Rudd who is expected to challenge Julia Gillard for leadership of the ALP on Monday. That much is clear. Neither Jessica nor Mamamia is purporting this piece to be impartial political analysis. Jessica is not Laurie Oakes and has never pretended to be. But she is someone with a unique and undeniably newsworthy insight into the biggest news story in Australia this week.
Mamamia publishes opinion pieces every day and sometimes they are political. We publish views from the left, the right and everywhere in between. Tony Abbott, Jenny Macklin, Kate Ellis, Julia Gillard, Sarah Hanson Young and Malcolm Turnbull are among politicians who have had opinion pieces published on Mamamia in the past 12 months.
Mamamia is not the ABC but we do try hard to publish a variety of views to reflect the diversity of our audience but also TO START CONVERSATIONS among you, our readers. Because we don’t ever underestimate your intelligence. We know that you can see who wrote a post and make your own assumptions about their beliefs and motivations.
We are proud to publish Jessica’s posts here on Mamamia, just as we always have been. Yes, the invitation has been extended to any other politician or family member of a candidate who has something to say about this extraordinary and quite bizarre time in federal politics.
That invitation is ongoing.
And we are also pleased to announce the appointment of our first dedicated political correspondent for Mamamia, journalist Lauren Dubois who today files her first of many upcoming pieces from Canberra which you can read here.

I totally get what Jess is saying, maybe you have to experience being in a country here no one can even imagine being able to converse with their government to appreciate the great privelidge and opportunity we Australians have.
I lived in China during the 2004 election and the concept of having a say in government is soooo foreign! In the subsequent 8 years I have taken every opportunity to make my 2 cents count.

WOW, WHAT A SURPRISE! KEVIN IS CHALLENGING! WOW, WHAT A MASSIVELY CONVENIENT & TIMELY ARTICLE!
loading...
You might want to turn me off…. I only like being used at the beginning of a sentence

Seriously, they could put a monkey in as PM at the moment. It doesn’t matter who is in charge. The whole Labor party is an absolute joke, and have been since they were elected back in 2007.
I don’t want either of these jokers in as PM and I can’t wait for the next election so I can vote them out.
I thought it was a terrible, disappointing time when Kevin was voted in for the sake of change. Howard was the best PM Australia has ever had in the history of our country, and we blew it by letting in those incompetent fools in.
Where are you now Maxine Mckew?
I am not owning this mess, I didn’t ask for it. I hope the rest of Australia realises that we need to get the Libs in pronto so they can get on with fixing the mess Labor has left (again).
loading...
“I am not owning this mess, I didn’t ask for it.” Happymum, that is exactly how I feel.
Jess, I think you seem lovely. However, this article feels patronising. Especially when it comes from someone in your position. I am well aware of my democratic rights. Mamamia – I would be far more interested in hearing Jess tell us why her father should actually be PM than how great it is that we have ‘a voice’!!
loading...
Monkey’s fling poo too you know…..just sayin
loading...
Dont you think that your claim of howard being the best PM in the history of Australian politics is a trifle OTT?
loading...
Emme and Claire, I agree that we shouldn’t blindly follow someone because they are female. Jobs should be given to those who have earned them.
However, I don’t agree with you that Julia Gillard has done a bad job. I think she and her impressive cabinet have done an excellent job, particularly in light of the hung parliament. They have managed to get a lot of impressive legislation through, and as such Julia should be rewarded for her achievements.
loading...
Absolutely agree
loading...
Jess, I really loved this article. Not for the political content, but how different things are in China. My husbands work had so many issues that they were forced to pull out of china. It was messy and the saddest thing is that it is the citizens that lose out. Thanks for reminding me how lucky we are that we have free speech and are able to use our voices!
loading...
Sadly the Australian middle class is a selfish one and the world knows it… our political class has demonstrated that well this week in all its ugly glory.
I adore Christine Lagarde, that lady is pure class and intellect, THAT’S a leader.
cheers and thanks mia for a great blog.

“When they are misbehaving, you can reprimand them.”
I bought into the Kevin07 campaign in a big way. I drank the Koolaid. And when things went pearshaped for the government I worked hard to understand why before I decided the right call was made by the ALP and Gillard was the right option for PM. Then the 2010 campaign sucked big ones and yet I wanted to see this work.
The one constant since the 2010 leadership spill has been Rudd’s petulance, his dog-whistling, his refusal to be ‘fully on board’ with government, his clear delight in making Gillard look uncomfortable, and the latest week to me now just looks like selfish misbehaviour of the worst kind.
I respect Gillard but I don’t think much of how this government has performed. I don’t know whose fault that is. I do know I’ve lost more and more respect for Rudd over the past two years and if this drama or its aftereffects deliver Australia an Abbott government, I would find it unforgivable.

Love reading articles by Jessica Rudd.
Of, course she would have a tiny bias, but she is articulate and fare.
loading...
“articulate and fair”?!!! You must have been reading a different article to the one that I read.

i have a great support network and a nanny, i empathize with you, i would love to know how you are doing and hope that my post didn’t offend you in any way.
Take Care.

The “Release Kevin” petition is calling on Labor to install Kevin Rudd as leader.
Julia offers assured defeat at the hands of Tony.
Kevin offers a chance of victory.
Aussies love sport and long for better talent in this political game.
Bring back Kevin to stop Tony Abbott with his simplistic, primitive, anti-progressive and embarrassing claptrap.
Show your support with the “Release Kevin” petition.

Mia,
You want a hot and controversial dinner party, get some nice looking and smart Greeks involved and see what all the fuss is about…(wink, wink)
Politics is in their blood.
loading...
Gosh, a lot of people are very cynical (or am I naive??). I really enjoyed this piece by Jess – great perspective.
loading...
Spoken by someone who clearly has no idea what it means to stay at home with 2 very small kids full time!
loading...
I Would vote For kevin Rudd.
I don;t like Julia she has lied and axed to many important policies i want my children to have the best start in life and that starts with there education firstly my child struggles with maths and more help with maths and science in schools would be great for example our new school has a lovely science lab but sadly no science teacher what is with tha Julia? she knows nothng about austalian Families i have emailed my local member to express my view and have tweeted as well and well as here, please fellow australians get typing , phoning, texting. express your view it will count if you make it count.:)
loading...
One more time for the people who didn’t pay attention in class…..
The Australian Prime Minister is not elected by the general public. We elect a party. Unless you live in Mr Rudd’s electorate you did not and cannot vote for him.
loading...
Yes, that’s true of course, but as seen by the last election, the leader of the party is taken into consideration by many voters. Many voters do feel like they voted for him 2007, even though we (except those who live in Griffith) didn’t. The party in power changing their leader does affect everyone. If it didn’t we wouldn’t have the current circus.
No matter whether you think the change from Rudd to Gillard in 2010 was a good thing, the way it was done did leave a bad taste in the mouth of many people. It didn’t feel right. Neither does this – no matter who wins or what happens from here.
loading...
What you are saying is true. But it is not true for the majority of voters. It was the election of Kevin07 not ALP07 or Labour07. People voted in Kevin07 whether you like it or not. Just look at this website. Everyone is discussing whether they like Kevin or Julia or Malcolm or Tony. We are constantly seeing comments such as “I would vote for Liberal if Malcolm was in charge but no way if it was Tony”. A lot of people vote for the Leader not the party!
loading...
Can you please forward this to Mr Rudd? Because according to him today, he was elected PM by the Australian people. News to those of us who understand how our politicians are elected! Those of us intelligent enough to recognise the tactic know what that is about, but there are lots of people out there (on Facebook, etc) who seem to be buying it……
loading...
How can she know nothing about Australian families? She is part of one!
loading...
Mia, seriously – I have NEVER seen such a negative reaction to a single post before, do you think it’s time to perhaps give your intelligent and discerning readers the benefit of the doubt and admit we’ve seen through this orchestrated PR stunt?
Seriously, anything else is just beyond insulting.
I pretty much know you don’t care, but you’ve lost me as a reader and a buyer of your books.
You’ve misunderestimated your readers, and you won’t back down – and for that, I am no longer a supporter of yours.
loading...
Well said. Totally agree.
loading...
Golly me I hope “misunderestimated” was tongue in cheek.
loading...
Not tongue in cheek, tongue in Iphone (a typo as I started to write misunderstood)!
loading...
It doesn’t get much better than an accidental Bushism when you’re posting about the political nous of a readership you’re attempting represent. I do agree with your point though… Just couldn’t leave the hilarious irony alone.
loading...
Or was it that the Mamamia editorial team was equally duped, but does not want to admit it?
Calls of ‘we’re not the ABC’ and ‘we like the piece’ lose all relevance when you are also confronted with the same sentiments from both of Jessica’s parents at any opportunity. Therese Rein even had time to again make these points this morning as she ‘rushed’ out of the house to pick Kev up at the airport…
Similar comment in a real election campaign (not just a leadership ballot which Rudd is trying to make into one) would need to be accompanied by all sorts of disclaimers.
loading...
Not true, re: ‘disclaimers’ on opinion content. None are required. Political coverage always comes with an implied agenda. This is clearly no different but we ran it because it was a good piece of writing with a message and it was quite readily apparent Jess has ties to her Dad. Our readers are smart enough to know that!
loading...
Maybe not required – but it would have been nice to have it there.
loading...
I don’t want to be argumentative, believe me, but having Jess’ byline and photo on this post was the biggest disclaimer you will ever find about its subjectivity!
loading...
You’re choosing to miss the point. Sad.
loading...
I think we all understand your point, Rick, even if we don’t agree with it. In the end – if you live by the sword, you will die by the sword. It’s the risk you take
loading...
I must not be one of your ‘smart’ readers as I can’t get past the fact that this ‘opinion’, regardless of whatever carefully crafted language it uses, sits within a broader context. A context in which Kevin Rudd has repeatedly made clear that his strategy is to engender public support (regardless of how relevant/irrelevant that is to a Caucus ballot) through activation of public participation in this process. A sentiment reinforced (coincidentally?) through Jess ‘opinion’?
No Mamamia, you are not the ABC. But you do make editorial decisions in a broader social and political context.
loading...
Of course we make decisions in that context. We ran this post. We stand by it. You’ve clearly picked up on the context like many have, what’s the issue? How about a debate on the content on the post like was intended? If we were trying to hide the fact this post came from the Rudd family we did literally everything wrong to achieve that!
loading...
It is a theme on this site that a back down is very, very rare.
loading...
she doesn’t represent all of the gen y demographic, my nephews find her boring and are sooooooooooooooo over it all!!
seems like a lovely girl and using the gay lobby as well is another pr spin with the marriage equality debate jess
loading...
thanks jess, i have “owned” this spill. i’ve emailed my labor MP to let them know i support julia. he isn’t one of the people who have publicly declared support either way, so you never know it may make a difference.
while you’re asking us to do something, can i return the favour? if your dad does lose on monday, can he stop this horrific white anting campaign and get on with his job as a back bencher. stop the tantrums and grandstanding, and let the ALP get on with the job.
loading...
So the whiteanting campaign against Rudd in the beginning was OK with you?
If you like Gillard, would you change your vote if Kev was in charge?
And do you support her comments regarding Assange being a criminal?
loading...
Oh and don’t forget the head banging and swearing and other general sociopath behaviour!
loading...
C’mon team…..we are so close to the 1,000 comments mark I can taste it!
loading...
…do we all get ice-cream if it does?
loading...
Where’s my ice-cream!!?
loading...
My non-fat gelati arrived but it was a little melted on account of the hot weather down here in Adelaide
loading...
Those accusing Jess of producing PR for Kev are a bunch of sooks because they know the feeling in the electorate is warm for Kev.
How many Gillardites will vote Abbott if Kev wins? Conversely, how many coalition votes can Kev convert. Gillardites will still vote ALP, so they are not the peeps who need to be appeased. Kev is the only chance for the ALP to be competitive.
If you think Gillard is popular, you won’t be one of those affecting any change in the polls. It is the anti Gillard peeps who may or may not vote for the ALP.
Let’s not forget Gillard’s comments about Assange being a criminal. Talk about a fair go.
loading...
Interesting that the posts with the most thumbs up are calling this piece for what it is – a carefully orchestrated piece of PR for Rudd.
I totally understand MM for publishing it – you’ll hit 1000 comments with this one – and I don’t begrudge you that – but please don’t tell your readers that we don’t understand what an opinion piece is versus media spin.
loading...
Well said. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck.
loading...
Mamamia – I have seen comments removed for a lot less than treemans. Please remove his comments. They are offensive and do not qualify for dinner party discussion.
loading...
Mr Kevin Rudd should challenge leadership he has my vote if Gillard stay’s as leadr my vote at the next Federal Election will swing away to another party – So clearly what I am saying is Kevin Rudd should challenge, he has my vote. Gillard got in using a Faction I want Rudd in with a vote – Sack Gillard – Vote Rudd.
The best thing Kevin Rudd could do is Challenge the Leadership I believe this would improve Labours Poll status in the Future. We want to see the people vote count.
Click Like – lets get the numbers up for Support Kevin Rudd Ledership Challenge.

I think it’s a shame that Jess wrote:
“You might think Julia Gillard is the ant’s pants. Fab. Say it.
You might think my Dad is ace. Cool. Write it.
You might think everyone sucks. Scream it.”
in the way that she did – as that’s all that’s been grabbed from an otherwise well-written opinion piece.
This part makes her sound 12 years old.
loading...
Absolutely, it’s sickening.
I’m stunned that she tweeting “effing proud of you Dad”. How incredibly embarrassing.
Obviously runs in the family.
loading...
But, alyssakt! That just means she’s down with the little people! She’s a cool chick, a top sheila. Just like you and me. Because we are clearly ocker morons who write “I heart K-Rudd, he’s rad!” in our diaries with glitter pen.
FFS. You know what, Jess? Some voters are dumb enough to fall for the “little ol’ me” down home folksy bullcrap. But those of us who aren’t do NOT take kindly to being patronised. You are dreaming if you think this is an effective tactic.
loading...
It was incredibly patronising. Very offensive. And her response a page or so down replying to some of the posts is equally patronising and condescending.
She is a very unlikeable person. Just like Dad!
loading...
Diana The Huntress – I Love it !!!!
loading...
That was my favourite bit!
loading...
Lucy, I liked the snappiness of it, but not the terms used.
Jess is only 4 years younger than me, but still using language I haven’t used since I decided to graduate from watching Home and Away (12).
On an educated 28 year old woman, it sounds naff.
loading...
Go Jess, really want to see Kevin Rudd back at the helm. Never will the caucus undermine the peoples vote, irrespective what Kevin may have done. The people wanted Kevin not Julia… Can’t you guys get it through your thick heads! I don’t doubt Kevin will have learnt from the experiences of 2010 and will be a better leader.
The labour caucus are bunch of dictatorship cronies bent on not listening to the peoples preferences… so if Kevin does not get in why should I have the confidence in the value of my vote then? RESTORE MY PREFERENCE and then restore my faith in Labour!
loading...
You’re an election too late.
loading...
Ditto
loading...
Jess, I generally enjoy your writing but in this case I beg to differ on one key point.
It’s not our spill. We DON’T own it. It’s been brought about by politicians acting like petulant Year 9 schoolgirls.
The sooner everyone grows up, the better. And if all this nonsense results in an election, costing millions upon millions of dollars, then that is the most obscene waste of money imaginable.
loading...
I just don’t get it.
MM is a business. A privately owned and run business.
The owners and managers of MM thus have the right to publish and do WHATEVER IN THE WORLD THEY WANT (as long as its legal!)
Yes they want their readers opinions and feedback and yes we have the right to give it but HOLY HELL……If I was Mia I would go CRAZY each time I felt I had to justify my decision to run and write almost EVERY SINGLE STORY.
“oh Mia is trying to get hits” or “any publicity is good for Mm” etc etc et-bloody-cetera!!
YES of course the site wants (AND NEEDS, if it is to be a success for us and them) hits! Of course publicity is good! Of course of course of – bloody-course!
If every time another business ran an ad or offered a free t-shirt with every pair of shorts would you slam them as “just trying to get buyers” or “just wanting publicity”??
No.
As you can obv tell I am a long time fan / reader of this site, but for good reason. As a SAHM of two small, small kids it has LITERALLY been my only link (oh and Facebook….. Oh and my blog!) to the outside world for 2 years! Ok that’s not true, I have a wonderful hubby and great friends…but I’m talking about those loooooooong days at home, just you and the 2 babies……. MM has kept me up to date on pretty much everything I want to be up to date on as well, it has allowed me to “be part of the conversation”….. It has made me actually feel “alive” on the days when I have otherwise felt “dead” (translation – dead = days when I have been up all night and haven’t yet communicated w another human – apart from morning goodbye hubby kiss/10min chat – that day.)
So PLEASE. Give Mia AND ME a break from all of “those” types of comments. I’m so sick of reading the complaints! As I said, have your opinion, but keep it respectful and keep in mind when you are making it that this is a private business that you are NOT forced to hang out at!
*running for cover from angry blasting comments waded my way*
loading...
Love this!
loading...
Disagree, loyal readers have been ‘used’ and disrespected by this piece.
The Bruce Hawker/Kevin Rudd strategy is a plain as day – Jess is popular with the 20-35 group, she’ll come in very handy. Get her on Mamamia and we’ll put Therese out there for the over 40′s. We’ve got this sewn up.
I’m peed about this. I feel used and I think Mia and Jess thought they were too clever by half.
loading...
Hey Mel,
It’s a horrible thing to feel used. And I can feel that you genuinely do just by reading your comment. So that totally sucks.
However, as I said, MM have the right to publish what they want EVEN IF THE SOLE INTENTION OF THAT IS TO GET HITS (not screaming just emphasising! How do u do that without caps??)
It IS Jess’ opinion. It IS an opinion piece. And not that I think this is the case, but even if Mia DID publish this to help her mate out etc etc, tha would be her right. She does not deserve the venom that some commenters (not you) have been delivering below.
loading...
Not so much “disrespected” as spoken to incredibly condescendingly. The post is annoying, righteous, ignorant and righteous.
loading...
Oops one too many “righteous” but it was really righteous! laugh.
loading...
I am in a similar home situation and totally agree. Mamamia is a life line to the outside world. It’s informative, fun, and keeps my brain tickng over about so many subjects, other than toddler food, nappy changes, and playdough.
I don’t read every article, sometimes I agree with the author, sometimes I don’t. I too am sick of the negative feedback Mia gets as a result of the stories that run. I love your comparison with other businesses who do things to get sales/publicity. They never cop it as much as Mia does. Keep up the great work MM.
loading...
Totslly agree Lolly!
Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don’t! I don’t read eve single article etc efc but I am grateful MM exists that’s for sure!
Have a lovely weekend!
loading...
Couldn’t agree more. I really enjoy reading the different articles and opinions. As a very bored sahm on a farm it certainly has been a lifeline for me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I have been so impressed with the diversity of people here.
“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the end your right to say it.”
loading...
Jessica Rudd. Yes, I agree, all contact your local member. All my friends have, and they’ve told them to vote for Julia on Monday!
loading...
Thanks Paul Robinson! I’m glad this post of Jessica’s is not just one way!
loading...
Hi Em, thanks for asking what solipsistic means.
It is basically the belief that a person feels they are the only ones who exist, that the world revolves around them, that nobody else has a place in the world.
The term comes from Latin solus (alone) and ipse (self).
Check it out on wikipedia! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solipsism
loading...
Oh great thanks!! Sounds like narcissistic which also has roots in latin i imagine
Cheers
loading...
You know what? Why shouldn’t Jess Rudd tell people to get off the couch and use their voices? This can be seen as a cynical attempt to remind Rudd supporters to galvanise and support his bid for Prime Minister. But it works both ways; Gillard supporters will hear the same message. I kind of like the idea of apathy being replaced by action, don’t you?
I am not certain who I’m for so I’m actually choosing to stay out of this one, but if I had an opinion I hope I’d share it with my local member. Seriously. DO it! Also, I am NOT a troll/ spammer etc. I just think that the hysteria in the comments section shows that people need better language skills; there is NOTHING hidden in this piece; Jess Rudd puts her opinion out there, she’s not trying to scam anyone, obviously just telling people what she thinks and obviously she supports her dad.
loading...
Agree.
loading...
Why? Because the Prime Minister is not a popularly elected President, the PM is elected by Caucus, it is not a popularity contest but a decision on who can guarantee supply so that the parliamentary party can govern. To act as if this is a popular position is to subvert democratic process. To elect a President by popular vote we first need to amend the constitution, which would require a referendum. Rudd wants to be elected PM by popular vote without any of us having the opportunity to have a say on whether we want a Presidential style system. And this is after his suggestion of US style primaries was REJECTED by the Labor party. Having failed to do this he is now trying to break the democratic process at the Federal level. Shameful.
loading...
This site shows how you people have turned poltical discouyrse into an empty popularity contest. Rudd lost the eladership of the ALP because he was an autocratic little pushy tyrant. he obvioulsy thinks he would liek to make the ALP into the Chinese Communist party and has the arrongance to beleive he will win this spill. News to you jessica your father is not up to the job. He was as bad a PM as Howard.
loading...
why so vicious in your comment? Honestly, your post does not deserve to be part of this discussion. You have contributed nothing.
loading...
I really liked her post. Don’t be so righteous Alice.
loading...
Alice, treeman’s comments are not “vicious”, but straight to the point. They are part of the discussion. treeman has contributed by expressing his/her opinion. Honestly, your post contributes nothing.
loading...
Well well well, I think this opinion poll should tell Mr Rudd and his supports once and for all that his popularity is nothing more than a media beat up.
You see, when a poll asks ‘who would you rather, Julia Gillard or Kevin Rudd,’ it’s the equivalent of asking which testicle would you like removed, the left one or the right one.
Before reading the comments here I would visit rarely. But I’m seriously impressed with the insight of her readers and applaud you for seeing through the propaganda and manipulations of the media.
I think the readership of Mamamia has matured at a rate that has the site struggling to keep up.
loading...
Mia will be loving this. Any publicity is good publicity.
loading...
For the money hungry bourgeoise capitalists. But not for Rudd.
loading...
Nice bit of editing, Moderator.
Jessica’s ‘opinion’ is allowed but not mine?
Perhaps I put it this way:
If you think Mia’s Today show appearances show great political insight then FAB, tell them so. Use your voice, after all this is a democracy and everyone has has the right to be as ignorant as they like.
loading...
Seems like Jessica thinks she is in China where they use this ttype of propaganda all the time. Your father is a loser…get used to it.
loading...
This is ad for a political candidate for a political position. Obviously, if you are charged under the Commonwealth Electoral Act for breaching its political advertising provisions you will argue it’s an opinion piece but you really need legal advice.
In the meantime, a significant part of your readership are disturbed and uneasy about this. You should pull it now and let your readers go back to visiting your site with pleasure.
loading...
Enough! I am not interested in anything Jessica Rudd or her mother Therese has to say. They should back right off.
Does the man require his “women” to take a stand for him?! He should be ashamed of himself.
I would be equally annoyed if Julia Gillards partner or her parents started speaking to the public on her behalf.
It sickens me.
loading...
Or maybe Therese and Jess are intelligent, articulate women who have as much right to their say as you do.
loading...
They are not simply having a “say” they are campaigning! THere is a huge difference.
loading...
There’s a difference between opinion and propaganda, and this ‘article’ is the latter.
loading...
I wouldn’t have minded a post from Jessica about how, for example, politics has affected her family or the transitions a family goes through when their father is such high power politician.
But this pure campaign from her is unacceptable and she has a huge hide writing it for Mamamia.
I’m actually embarrassed for her and for her mother who was also on her soapbox last night.

“It’s taking ‘stand by your man” way too far.”
What? Seriously?
Can’t they just be people with a valid opinion…
loading...
Because it’s not just opinion. She has a clear agenda.
loading...
Yes of course, Susan, they can “just be people with a valid opinion” but they chose not to be!
Instead Jessica & Terese took the campaigner approach and are ramming self serving lobbying down our throats.
Supported of course by MM whose brand I believe has been quite damaged by this.
loading...
I absolutely agree! It was bad enough hearing about Terese Reins speech but now we have to cop it from the daughter!
This is not America! The family do not campaign on the electee’s behalf. I am really angry about this. Plus it makes Rudd look weak, that he can’t handle it on his own.
The daughter and wife should go back to their day jobs.
loading...
“This spill is ours”? This spill belongs to Kevin Rudd, no one else. If you are really asking for the opinion of the people and an open dialogue, call an election. It would be lovely if these elected representatives of the people of Australia remembered that they are public servants and should act in a manner befitting adults. Both Gillard & Rudd are coming across as juvenile & petty. We have bigger fish to fry in the current economic climate.
loading...
Hey MM team, call it what it is… a sponsored post haha!!!
loading...
OK.
Some thoughts on the argument around whether this article should have been posted on MM or not. (And thanks to various people on twitter – MM and readers – for helping me to reach this conclusion)
Firstly, lets look at this from the reader’s point of view – what we saw was this:
1) Rudd quits and challenges for the ALP leadership
2) His Wife holds a press conference where she asks the Australian voters to put pressure on the Labor caucus by contacting them directly
3) Jess Rudd follows shortly after with this opinion piece which, again, encourages voters to contact the ALP caucus and make their voices heard…
So, viewing it that way, it seems like this article is part of a wider political strategy…which it probably is…and I don’t think anyone is denying that…
From the MM team point of view, this is what happened (and correct me if I’m wrong):
1) Rudd quits and challenges for the ALP leadership
2) Jess Rudd approaches MM asking if they would publish this opinion piece
3) MM publishes the opinion piece – the fact it is part of a wider political strategy does not come into that decision – they published based on the quality of the submission
This is where the disconnect between readers and publisher occurs (thanks to @katherineonhere for pointing this out to me)
Once I understood this, I have changed my mind about this post…think about it…news sites (and this site) also covered Thérèse Rein’s press conference – in full knowledge that it was part of the wider Rudd campaign…so why treat this post any different? Yes, this post is most probably part of Rudd’s strategy to depose Gillard, but that doesn’t mean MM shouldn’t post this…all opinion has bias…if someone from the Gillard camp wanted to write a rebuttal, I’m sure MM would publish it too…(they’ve said as much)
I guess the only issue with the MM team I still have is how they communicated this to their readers…I think that could have been handled better (some of it has been dismissive), but then again I struggled to understand their position, so I’m not surprised that other people are also struggling…it’s difficult to try and educate an audience that isn’t understanding the argument….
So, I’ve finally come down on the side of MM on this…yes, this post was politically loaded, but MM was perfectly justified in running the post.
Now, before anyone says “well, if that’s the case, why won’t they publish articles supporting Anti-Vaxers or Climate-Change deniers”…well, I think the difference is that Jess Rudd’s article is pure opinion…it’s not trying to communicate anything from the perspective of fact vs non-fact…some opinion can be dismissed outright because the opinion is based on factual errors or misunderstandings (that was my argument against Meshel Laurie’s post this week)…but you can’t argue any of that with this post.
Anyway, that’s where I’ve finally come down on this issue. As always, you all have the right to disagree with me…
loading...
I keep thinking about this too and I agree with you JJ. Mamamia has every right to publish this piece. Every right. But the way they have dealt with some of their commenters has come across as unusually rude. And, their denial that Jess’s article is part of the wider Rudd campaign is curious. I mean, once you’ve watched the news, this piece just reads like a carbon copy of Kevin (and Therese’s) key talking points. Unfortunately, for me, it has just made me lose a little respect for some people that I used to hold in high regard.
loading...
I don’t think they are denying that the article is part of the wider Rudd campaign…at least, I don’t think so anymore (that’s one of things that they haven’t communicated that well)
I think MM is arguing that it is irrelevant if it is or isn’t part of the wider Rudd campaign (MM, yes? Or am I still missing the point…?)
loading...
Agreed. I think you’ve articulated it perfectly (Disclosure: I’m @KatherineOnHere). I still find Jessica’s article disingenuous but I don’t think MM were being disingenuous when they chose to publish it.
The disconnect here between audience & publisher is so interesting. MM is usually great at engaging with its audience, not enraging large parts of it. I don’t think the defensiveness of some of the MM team in their replies to comments to criticism helped. Telling people they don’t understand what an opinion piece is was never going to do anything but annoy people even more. They understand it’s an opinion piece. They just don’t think that opinion is being presented in good faith. For me, that’s a failing within the article itself. I guess for others it’s the publisher. Either way it’s been fascinating!
loading...
Interesting parallel between your comment “Telling people they don’t understand what an opinion piece is was never going to do anything but annoy people even more.” and the other comments along the line of “people don’t vote for the prime minister they vote for the party who then chooses a prime minister” also guarenteed to annoy people.
loading...
Agree!
And another point that shouldn’t piggy back your comment – but will! It also makes me think about what it means to be a writer. I think occasionally writers and journalists seem to think they’re equally, if not more intelligent than readers, simply because their work is read by others. Being a writer doesn’t make you an academic, and i think in making the editors comment, Mia has forgotten this important point. I regularly read articles here that don’t patronise, and recognise readers are more intelligent than given credit for (hence the demise of stupid women’s magazines), but occasionally those who cover the news and make the news slip up, and forget this doesnt make their view more worthy. Patornising self justification from some of the staff on here leaves a very bitter taste in the mouth indeed.
loading...
Yes, Katherine it is fascinating and I love the way you’ve used the words “engage versus enrage” to describe the relationship between publisher and audience. Judging by the sheer number of comments on this post alone, I think this may be a turning point for Mamamia. I sincerely hope that Mia and her team re-read all the comments with fresh eyes and take on board the critical analysis. As I see it, her readers are demanding more: better reporting, higher editorial standards and more rigorous debate. That’s an incredible opportunity. Time for more engagement and less enragement!
loading...
I too have been thinking about why this post bothered me, & it really does bother me. I think it’s not the fact the it was published, I don’t really have a problem with that, it’s how it was “advertised” by mamamia. Treating it like its some huge exclusive about what Jess really thinks, when it’s not that at all, it is part of a strategic campaign.
The constant teasing tweets really grinds my gears as well. This is not the first article they have done it too & I’m tired of it. I don’t like to be treated like a fool & have therefore unfollowed the whole gang.
The reason I read this site is because of the quality of the commenters & it upsets me that they are treated with such contempt. I expected better.
loading...
Yep – I think there has been a bit of a backlash against how MM promotes some articles…I think we’ve all had the “oh, here we go again” moments recently when seeing a new topic title in our feed readers or twitter feed…but then again, we’re not the target audience…they want new readers…
I’m also tired of the tweets to the older articles (except mine)…but, you know, that’s probably for us the readers to deal with…
loading...
Agreed. I guess I’m annoyed because I have been coming to this site pretty much from the start & it’s such a different beast now. I have a huge respect for what Mia has accomplished & I know the site needs to expand etc but there is a fine line between gaining new readers with cheesy tweets & pissing off your current ones. Having said that I always look for your well considered comments & I’m glad you’re here.
loading...
If the point of Mamamia is to get people talking I’d say they have done a great job! At the very least they have people thinking about how the media shapes and influences the news and real world events.
Personally I think people are getting their knickers in a knot about nothing. If you don’t like the site, if you don’t like the stories or disagree with the editors decisions or views then don’t come.
loading...
The difference between the news showing parts of Therese speech and this article is that news seeks out other voices. If they showed up to Therese’s press conference because they were invited, featured her and her alone on the broadcast and then said they didn’t feature Gillard or Abbott because they were waiting for them to get in contact, well I’d be just as displeased.
Before publishing an article like this Mamamia should have contacted Gillard, or if that failed (which is highly likely) a pro-Gillard Labor member and asked if they would write a piece. If they tried everyone and had no luck, fine. But it’s extremely poor form to not even try to present a balanced view, considering this is not a simple opinion piece, but part of a campaign for a politician.
loading...
You’re perspective assumes that every opinion piece published on MM needs to be balanced by an opinion piece with an opposing view…there’s no such requirement on this Blog or any other Blog.
loading...
But again, while I understand your search for balance, these are not the web pages of a traditional media source you are reading. All op-eds carry with them a bio about the author and that’s it. Whether this is a campaign ‘post’ or not is irrelevant. It’s one view from one woman who is quite absolutely clearly connected to Kevin Rudd. Not much more needs to be said on that front. We hear you, but we just don’t agree. Sorry.
loading...
Completely agree JJ! My feelings about this article have been going back and forth but you have summed up where I have landed.
You hit the nail on the head in saying that it can be hard to educate an audience that doesn’t understand the argement. An acnowledgement by MM early on that the piece can be seen as biased when put in the context of the ‘family campaign’ but that they published it as a stand alone piece about the involvement of the Australian public in politics may have led to a different outcome (although there will always be people who disagree).
I do applaud the MM team for publishing it and standing by it. We all know they are smart enough to realise they would get some backlash and they went for it anyway.
loading...
Just my personal feelings – I think the Labor party is marching off a cliff. Kevin Rudd is the one person who can save the party yet the Labor party is blind to their own faults and is blaming everything on Kevin Rudd. My feeling is that if Julia Gillard leads the government to the next election they will be decimated, and I expect even then it will still be ‘all Kevin’s fault’
People may groan every time someone rocks the boat, but in this case I think this is necessary move simply for the survival of the Labor party. Someone has to sound the alarm. The government has to wake up to themselves. After all its not the factions who will be deciding the results of the next election but the people of Australia who the party has been ignoring. Again this is just my personal opinion
loading...
Kevin Rudd is incapable in this role – he has well proven that to all his colleagues, staff. A lot of this, his erratic, unacceptable behaviour was hidden from the public but well known to insiders.
Just one example was him banging his head repeatedly against a brick wall because a press conference went one question too long. This is not normal behaviour by anyone’s standards.
This is one (true and proven) example but there are many more. His behaviour will not have changed. For that to happen a considerable amount of work on himself, councelling etc would have to be done. He has not done this.
loading...
For everyone who comments that this is a piece of political propaganda or thinks it inappropriate MM published it, maybe think about it from this perspective:
Mamamia is a business. They have staff to pay, an office to run. They make money from advertising. The advertising dollars are brought in with “clicks” on stories and on the site. Can you imagine how many “clicks” have been made on this story (with 800 comments being about 5% of the readership, someone else do the maths I’m hopeless) and the site itself?
loading...
Too true Whippersnapper. I actually fully appreiated this for the first time the other day with Mia’s ‘judgement’ article. I like many others was disappointed by Mia’s piece, but my, was it a popular post.
I think those of us who’ve been following Mia since before she ‘corporatised’ may have taken a while to come around to the fact that this is no longer just a nice cosy place to come and chat with each other – the ‘dinner party’ has long gone! The posts are increasingly about creating controversy because that creates hits and engagement and they are good for the bottom line on any blog or e-zine or whatever this now is!
I think we just need to deal with it, and either keep reading (perhaps a bit more selectively – the news, best and worst and open posts are still generally safe) or move on. Complaining about it will not help because this is a deliberate strategy and it’s working so they’re not about to change it!
loading...
Cosy dinner parties get boring, give me an article with a little kick so we can debate , even sometimes get all hot and bothered about, is much more fun. Posts like Quick Question, or posts pandering to the writer are in my opinion rather dull. ” Oh Mia I love your outfit ,Oh Mia where did you get your shoes, bla bla bla, is yawn material. Give me posts with a kick and an edge any day.
loading...
I’m happy with the combination, to be honest! I like most content posted on here, even if I don’t, I still read pretty much every article, even the ones I think aren’t very good.
loading...
Are you a spammer? Or can you genuinely not spell and not make…errr, an actual point?
loading...
No doubt being such an intelligent person you see through a typo. In any case Jessica this is not “our” spill this is the ALP party caucus spill. Your father is a reject..move on Gillard 65 Rudd 35 no contest, she wins he loses.
loading...
YEAH A BUNCH OF LITTLE CAPITALSITS PROFITEERING FROM POLITICAL INTRIGUE…DISGUSTING!!
loading...
Well, everyone has to make money somehow, Anonymous.
loading...
Hey, leave Anonymous alone! It appears they have a lot to contend with, what with their caps lock key being broken and all.
loading...
Evidence here that sarcasm is actually not the lowest form of wit. Made me laugh out loud!
loading...
Sarcasm may be the lowest form of wit, but wit is the highest form of intelligence!
I heard that years ago, been waiting for a chance to use it
loading...
You’re right of course, this is a business, but do you know what makes it so successful?? The comments. This is the bread & butter of the site, no comments no site. Simple. So in turn, readers should be treated with respect, not dismissed as ” not having understood” like we are a bunch of dumb yokels.
loading...
Totally agree.
Readers should be treated with respect, but at the same time, I have (and counting by the 50 or so likes on the comments I have made about it others agree and the comments in agreement) asked in the past for MM to take a break from so many body image articles because I was a bit tired of it. Obviously those articles get clicks, so they keep getting published!
This, though, I accept is a little different!
loading...
Propaganda shropaganda. I can’t believe anyone wouldn’t want to read a piece from K-Rudd’s daughter at this point.
loading...
So incredibly true!
loading...
Sad to see today’s Editor’s Note. Sad because again MM has to remind its educated readers what an opinion piece is (duh!) and sad that none of the PAGES and PAGES of comments about this being part of a co-ordinated PR strategy from the Rudd camp have been acknowledged in any detail. In fact, they have been summarily dismissed. “We’ve been surprised that some readers have not understood…” is a patronising and condescending response to your readers, many who have quite rightly, seen through the spin.
Here’s a challenge to Mamamia: please ask Jessica Rudd one question and publish her response — Did her Dad and his PR team read this piece before it was submitted to Mamamia for publication?
loading...
Could not agree more.
Childish retorts that “But guuuys, this is just an opinion piece” and “Jessica always writes for us so what’s the big deal” are only making the original insult in publishing this piece that much greater.
For the life of me I can’t figure out if they honestly don’t get it or they just don’t want to lose face in admitting they’ve completely misjudged this situation.
Surely given Rudd’s people have now shouted this same line to anyone that will listen Mamamia now realises that far from being an exclusive article this is but one of many advertisements for Rudd we are hearing and seeing everywhere else.
loading...
They don’t want to lose face.
loading...
As a long time reader of the site, I would have more respect for Mia if she just came out and said, “hey, maybe I published this too hastily and didn’t think through the possibility that I’d be used for PR spin by the Rudd camp. Obviously my readers see this and want more from my site. I will take on that challenge.”
The “we’re not the ABC and we publish opinion pieces not news” line of defense was fine when Mia was a solo blogger, but It feels like a cop-out now that her business and team are growing so rapidly.
Mia, your audience is demanding more. That’s not a bad thing. It means that you’ve successfully created a site that people want to embrace more and trust more. What an opportunity.
loading...
Bullseye
loading...
This is so ill judged that it has Bruce Hawker’s fingerprints all over it.
loading...
You are absolutely right. Except for asking if Rudds office approved it beforehand.
They didn’t need to!
It’s pure sycophantic shmultz.
loading...
Mia is so patronising to her readers – it is astounding.
loading...
Soo… Go somewhere else for your news and opinions then…
loading...
this is such dishonest propaganda. Our political parties choose their leaders and we decide based on the candidates they put forward. That is how our political system works. Tony Abbott isn’t there because of the love of the community. Most would probabably choose Malcolm Turnbull over Abbott. The public should not be misled about the processes of our political parties. Trying to use ‘ordinary people’ further the agenda of one egtistical man is deeply dishonest and quite sinister.
loading...
76% of Australia hates Abbott.
loading...
Untrue, they hate the persona that the media feed them about him and they are too lazy to find out the truth for themselves.
Unlike those who lead our country at present, Tony Abbott is a man with a family, a mortgage, he’s paid school fees and raised teenagers. He volunteers his time without calling a press conference to follow him around. He’s not a media whore, he is a normal, decent Australian and a gentleman.
On the other team we have a woman who’s roots are Fabian Socialist (at best) with adulterous affairs and more wheeling and dealing than I’ve had baked dinners and a multi-millionaire egomaniac who’s wife has built up an enormous international company and in whose footsteps his daughter and her husband are following.
And the FACT is that if an election was held tomorrow the ALP would be decimated, destroyed and hopefully, after the last four years of torture, wiped from the political landscape.
loading...
Love it MLS
loading...
Call an election, simple as that. And I don’t mean a phony ALP caucus ballot, I mean a fair-dinkum true election. Then and only then will you give the PM the people want.
loading...
Calling an election wouldn’t mean anything – as has been stated numerous times in these comments, the people of Australia elect a party, not a leader.
loading...
Actually we elect representatives, some of whom have been unrepresentative of their electorates, and hence we have a situation where the Coalition has more seats than the ALP but not government. The angst of the Australian people may have been assuaged if we had a “new paradigm”, but all we have is more of the same. If Rudd succeeds, we get Windsor possibly calling an election. If Gillard wins just, we have more destabilisation. If Gillard wins easily, Rudd may call a by-election. None of these are in Australia’s long-term interests. A defining election result – either way – would be.
loading...
So we, the tax payers, have to pay millions and millions of dollars to sort out this immature behaviour?
I can’t think of a single thing that would be a better use for the money…
OH WAIT, how about funding some of the recommendations from the Gonski review for starters?
loading...
WOW, 861 comments so far! Is this a record for a Mammamia post?
Thanks guys for posting this – you are right in that Jess Rudd has a unique and newsworthy perspective into this whole situation, and one that is certainly different to what is being repeated on TV/News sites at the moment.
I for one do not think it is “PR Spin”, or “Pro-Rudd”. If you read the post, you’ll see that she says you should vouch for whoever you like, or scream about whoever you don’t like, but the important thing is to say something, as we live in a country where we have that right. We are lucky to have that right, and it’s important to exercise it if we want a hand in shaping our country.
loading...
If you’ve been following the coverage of the leadership challeng you’d notice Jessica’s “opinion” is right on message with the angle the Rudd campaign has taken.
All the ” shout it form the rooftops” nonsense is designed to encourage people to contact their local members and say “I love Kevin” so MPs will freak out and think he’s so popular they’ll lose their seats if they don’t vote for him on Monday.
Its a concerted campaign to garner votes before the ballot so he can ouster Gillard.
In her clarification Mia freedman is either being disingenuous or she is incredibly naive. Or she’s been had, like about 90 per cent of readers here.
loading...
Oh please….. “if you read the post”.. right, none of the 861 people who commented below thought to do that! Oh, and Jessica Rudd also mentioned that we should just vote for whoever so it’s obviously not PR! Wow, here I was thinking she was supporting her Dad when really she’s just reminding people we live in a Democracy!
Give the readers here some credit, we’re not idiots.
loading...
“Tomorrow, when I fly in….”
Gosh, you sound exactly like your Dad.
loading...
Why exactly is she “flying in” and announcing it so publicly? I get that she wants to support her dad, but surely he’s a big boy and can fight his own battles. It’s a cringe-worthy three ring circus.
loading...
Like her father, seems like she thinks Australians will be impressed with her frequent flyer status.
loading...
This is unnecessary.
loading...
No, its funny because its true.
loading...
she probably wants the media to meet her at the airport so she can sell her father to the ‘ordinary’ people even more. Her father understands how to campaign – he has drawn out his announcement to run for days. If Rudd wins john mendoza has predicted mass walk outs of the public service. People should wake up to what this man is like when the cameras are turned away. very few want to work with him again – he is presenting a lie to the ‘ordinary’ people out there. There is something quite evangelical in the way this family sells themselves and they are not being honest.
loading...
Enough rabble rousing by the Rudds. The Rudd family are not royalty and neither is any other person in the media spotlight. We are a democracy with structures and processes which fortunately decide who leads and who governs. We would all do well to remember this and respect and support our institutions and processes. Bad losers are toxic.
loading...
Agreed, not an opinion piece but PR written by a PR consultant who is also her client’s daughter. I’m surprised you can’t understand the distinction. Maybe readers should take this piece with a grain of salt, like a sponsored post.
And to flag it as “exclusive” is just embarrassing. The national media has hardly jumped on it and run with it….
And who the hell is Lauren Dubois? Never heard of her and can’t find a single thing she’s written. Another mate perhaps, like our Jess?
loading...
I didn’t vote for Julia to be leader of the labour party…if they ever dared to open the caucas to a public referendum i think the numbers would be very different!
In my opinion, she’s a puppet – doing all she can to retain her backing with her party and the powerprockers/faceless men. I think Rudd acts more professionally, sounds more educated and is better positioned to communicate with China (the new rapidly emergin worldpower). yes, Rudd knows how to play the game – but he displays a heck of a lot more intelligence than Julia. Other country leaders must be looking and laughing….
loading...
There’s no denying Rudd is in intelligent man. But look at his track record – he was unable to actually achieve anything substantial in his time as PM, whereas Gillard has succeeded in getting tough legislation through with a minority government.
loading...
The clarification in itself is patronising. Mia, anyone who can read recognises that this is PR spin. This isn’t an opinion piece, as Jess is not providing one. If she were, she would have straight out said ‘my Dad rocks, everyone go tell him how much he rocks for x & y reasons’. That would be an opinion piece. This, instead, is a carefully worded media release articulating a concerted campaign both Therese and Jess have been dutifully shouting at anyone who will listen. Kevin, Therese and Jess are all on the campaign trail, and this is simply part of that propaganda wagon. It is a ‘call to arms’ as it were. Nothing more, nothing less.
loading...
Spot on, Bemused.
