Tomorrow, when I fly in, I’m coming home to a political situation that most Australians think is a dog’s breakfast. What’s happening is ugly as. It’s infuriating. Messy. I agree. It is and it needs to be sorted out.

But unlike what happened in 2010, when Australia went to bed with one prime minister and woke up to another, now we have time.

This leadership ballot is happening in caucus, the group of 103 Labor MPs and senators we elected, but that doesn’t mean it is not our vote.

We are their employers. My Dad works for me.  I often remind him of that. He is my local member and I helped put him there. I walked into a church hall and in the privacy of a polling booth I put a one next to his name.

You’re all employers too. You might not be related to your employees, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have access to them. When they aren’t doing their jobs, you can tell them. When they are misbehaving, you can reprimand them.

I live in Beijing, a city with a population the size of our whole nation—twenty-two million people.

Like us, they get up in the morning. They have a shower and wonder if their favourite top is dry yet. They get dressed and go to work. They have lunch with their colleagues and bitch about HR. At the end of the day they swap heels for runners and go home. They order dinner from the grease-stained menus on the fridge, call their mum and switch on the telly.

At the same time each night on almost every free-to-air TV station all over China is the same national news broadcast. I don’t mean it’s similar, I mean the exact same show. In sync. You can flick between stations and the same guy is on your screen telling you what is going on, or at least what he’s allowed to tell you is going on.

You can’t just go, ‘this is boring, that guy’s tie is feral—I wonder what’s happening over on The Project.’

You can’t write to your local MP about it because you don’t have one and a complaint to the network is a complaint to the government.

When you watch international stations like the BBC and CNN, stories about China often disappear. The screen goes blank.

There’s no Twitter or Facebook. Don’t get me wrong, there are social media platforms and they’re epic. But in China it’s all still new and risky. People do say what they think but they worry about the consequences. Controversial posts are mysteriously removed from China’s equivalent of Twitter, Weibo. They just vanish.

We, the people of Australia, are different. We have power.

We are not a passive audience in a crowded cinema with popcorn on our laps waiting for the previews to end.

We are participants. We have a voice and I think we should bloody well use it. Get up and say something. Say it loudly. Be heard.

You might think Julia Gillard is the ant’s pants. Fab. Say it.

You might think my Dad is ace. Cool. Write it.

You might think everyone sucks. Scream it.

Tweet something. Rant on Facebook. Put a video on YouTube. Put a sign on your front fence. Have a chat with your neighbour. Tell your friends. Email your local MP. Ring them up. Stop them at the news agent and make them listen. Call your local radio station. Have a rally Vote in an online poll. Write a song about it. Get on Mamamia and say, ‘OMG she’s just saying that because she’s KRudd’s daughter.’

Look, I know the parliament can seem alien at times—believe me, it’s even weirder when you’re there—but it is not out of reach. It’s ours. We own it.

Let’s own this spill, people. Let’s make it ours. Make your MPs work for you. Tell them what you want. Because unlike my mates in China, we have no excuse for simply sitting back and letting it happen.

Jess Rudd writes: This spill is ours. Own it.

So, if you were in caucus, which way would you vote?

Editor’s Note: We’ve been surprised that some readers have not understood that this is an opinion piece so we thought it might be helpful to clarify a few points. Jessica Rudd is the daughter of Kevin Rudd who is expected to challenge Julia Gillard for leadership of the ALP on Monday. That much is clear. Neither Jessica nor Mamamia is purporting this piece to be impartial political analysis. Jessica is not Laurie Oakes and has never pretended to be. But she is someone with a unique and undeniably newsworthy insight into the biggest news story in Australia this week.

Mamamia publishes opinion pieces every day and sometimes they are political. We publish views from the left, the right and everywhere in between. Tony Abbott, Jenny Macklin, Kate Ellis, Julia Gillard, Sarah Hanson Young and Malcolm Turnbull are among politicians who have had opinion pieces published on Mamamia in the past 12 months.

Mamamia is not the ABC but we do try hard to publish a variety of views to reflect the diversity of our audience but also TO START CONVERSATIONS among you, our readers. Because we don’t ever underestimate your intelligence. We know that you can see who wrote a post and make your own assumptions about their beliefs and motivations.

We are proud to publish Jessica’s posts here on Mamamia, just as we always have been. Yes, the invitation has been extended to any other politician or family member of a candidate who has something to say about this extraordinary and quite bizarre time in federal politics.

That invitation is ongoing.

And we are also pleased to announce the appointment of our first dedicated political correspondent for Mamamia, journalist Lauren Dubois who today files her first of many upcoming pieces from Canberra which you can read here.

I appreciate your anger but “bitch” is a misogynist term. I’m offended- not as a supporter but as a woman.

It’s not a term you’d apply to a man; don’t use it for women.

Let me make it real simple and short. My vote would go to Tony only IF Mr Rudd is not the leader of the party.

Jessica is right. I’ve met with my local State MP to secure better access and service to a State level department. I contacted my Federal local member regarding my views on marriage equality, when Adam Bandt requested that MPs solicit the views of their constituents. And I’d love to have a say on the Lanor leadership except that my federal MP is Liberal.

We can’t complain that they don’t listen unless and until we take the time and effort to make ourselves and our views known!

I really like Jessica Rudd. I think obviously she is being supportive of her Dad which of course I would be too if in her situation.

I really do not support Kevin Rudd though or his actions. He did a manipulative thing yesterday by resigning from Washington just before primetime nightly news. This of course was a calculated decision made by him & his supporters.

Rudd is trying to undermine the current government and I don’t see how that is being supportive of Labor or the Australian nation as a whole. All I can see from his is Rudd’s ego rearing its ugly head again.

I mean do we really have such a short term memory that we have already forgotten that most of us hated him towards the end of his days as PM? The failed ETS, the rumours of psychopathic behaviour in office, the abusing of colleagues and his inability to communicate on a voter level.

    How quickly we forget!

My heart goes out to Julia Gillard, I think she has done a fine job being PM of a minority government but she too has failed in the communication department, unable to really make voters see what she has been able to do for this country in a good enough light that she is even moderately popular as a result.

Kevin will not win the leadership ballot. Julia will continue being PM. However as far as the next election goes, I think we can congratulate Tony Abbott already.

He sure as hell will be sleeping like a baby tonight. And that’s the scariest consideration of all. The prospect of him becoming PM just because Labor can’t get their proverbial sh*t together.

Obviously you have also forgotten Julia stating there would be no Carbon Tax under her Government as well……? Not knowing her staff had written her acceptance speech 2 weeks before the coup, yet flatly denying any knowledge of the speech (and making the coup decision on the day)? Come on. They’re all as bad as each other. John Curtin would be rolling in his grave knowing what the Labor party has become!

I can understand why she wrote this. She is Kevin Rudd’s daughter. Anyone who thinks this is just a piece about standing up for your rights is completely deluded. Mr Rudd does not have the numbers to win the ballot on Monday and every single person in his family I am sure is aware of this. The only way he may be able to boost his numbers if people write to their representatives and let them know that they support him. For any minor rep who is just holding onto their seat might want to support Rudd for fear of losing their job in the next local election. This is the only reason why she wrote this but just like her father she portrays it as something else. That is fine too but just be honest about it!

Good article…….but…….I remember when I had my second bub there were a number of issues I felt needed the attention of the then Health Minister (now our Attorney General Nicola Roxon – who is also my local member ahem). I took the time to put together a very constructive email (yes I did not just say it’s broke – I gave some suggestions how to fix it!!!!) what did I get? The sounds of silence……..

    GD Star Rating

    • Kelsey

LJ – to be fair, you can’t expect a Minister or her hard-working staffers to always be able to write back to every email they’re written. What you can expect is that a piece of writing you put time and effort into will be read, considered, taken seriously and actioned (if its possible). Whether or not you receive a reply, these things can still happen. Don’t lose heart when you don’t hear back – silence isn’t always the bad stuff it’s cracked up to be. Staffers are there to listen and pass your suggestions, questions, concerns up the line – and if putting it in an email wasn’t a satisfying experience for you, pick up the phone. Maybe you’ll find a conversation more mutually satisfying?

Ummmm sorry – they work for me and thus SHOULD take the 5 minutes to at least acknowledge I sent them an email. This is exactly what Jess Rudd is touting in her piece. They work for us! I actually find your response very patronising!

        • Hayley

Actually, you can expect it. In my previous electorates I have written to 3 different MPs on different issues and they have all replied to me. Bill Shorten actually kept me updated via post on what he was doing to have my opinion heard and called me to thank me for my efforts. I don’t think an email or letter sent from The Office of Whoever really takes that much effort.

        • Kelsey

Sorry – not at all my intention to be patronising, a big apology if it came across that way. I completely agree with Jess and agree with you too.

All I mean to say is that experiences will be different in different electorates. If you live somewhere where your rep is also a minister or in an internal leadership position, you’ll probably have to try a tactic other than email to hear back (Abbott is mine, and not famous for replying to emails).

That’s not to say you shouldn’t own it, do everything you can to get in touch and sure, expect a reply, expect our pollies to step up, and bug them more for a reply if you dont hear back. That’s awesome. But also give the person on the other end the benefit of the doubt if they don’t reply. Ministers sometimes get thousands of emails a day and despite best intentions may not be able to reply to them all.

Don’t think I’m not with you on this… I am – not hearing back is incredibly frustrating all the same.

  6. Love this Jess…

I too am tired of hearing people say that they have no say in politics…yes you do…especially in these modern times of social media…there are no such thing as faceless men…everyone in the Labor caucus is a public figure…they have e-mail addresses and twitter accounts and phone numbers…you can influence them.

So, yes…don’t be passive, get involved. Don’t turn off, pay attention. Don’t accept what you hear the media say or politicians say. Seek out new ideas, new opinions…ask questions…voice your opinion…

A lot of MM regulars know I’m not shy of voicing my opinion…and agree with me or not, I think a lot of you respect what I say because I am focussed and involved in our society, not passive or disinterested…

Unfortunately, my local member is Tony Abbott…so not much point in me writing to him about this issue…but I’ll continue being active on Twitter and Blogs…

    Oh…and Go Gillard! (Sorry Jess)

Your dad once again plays the victim. He was knifed for a good reason. Now he has been white anting the party for many months, comes out with a rubbish martyr speech full of hypocrisy & self interest. He deserves to be crushed for the damage he is doing and if there was a clear majority in the government, he should have been sacked. He is popular with the people of Australia – so is the coalition led by Tony Abbott so that is meaningless.
