Tomorrow, when I fly in, I’m coming home to a political situation that most Australians think is a dog’s breakfast. What’s happening is ugly as. It’s infuriating. Messy. I agree. It is and it needs to be sorted out.
But unlike what happened in 2010, when Australia went to bed with one prime minister and woke up to another, now we have time.
This leadership ballot is happening in caucus, the group of 103 Labor MPs and senators we elected, but that doesn’t mean it is not our vote.
We are their employers. My Dad works for me. I often remind him of that. He is my local member and I helped put him there. I walked into a church hall and in the privacy of a polling booth I put a one next to his name.
You’re all employers too. You might not be related to your employees, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have access to them. When they aren’t doing their jobs, you can tell them. When they are misbehaving, you can reprimand them.
I live in Beijing, a city with a population the size of our whole nation—twenty-two million people.
Like us, they get up in the morning. They have a shower and wonder if their favourite top is dry yet. They get dressed and go to work. They have lunch with their colleagues and bitch about HR. At the end of the day they swap heels for runners and go home. They order dinner from the grease-stained menus on the fridge, call their mum and switch on the telly.
At the same time each night on almost every free-to-air TV station all over China is the same national news broadcast. I don’t mean it’s similar, I mean the exact same show. In sync. You can flick between stations and the same guy is on your screen telling you what is going on, or at least what he’s allowed to tell you is going on.
You can’t just go, ‘this is boring, that guy’s tie is feral—I wonder what’s happening over on The Project.’
You can’t write to your local MP about it because you don’t have one and a complaint to the network is a complaint to the government.
When you watch international stations like the BBC and CNN, stories about China often disappear. The screen goes blank.
There’s no Twitter or Facebook. Don’t get me wrong, there are social media platforms and they’re epic. But in China it’s all still new and risky. People do say what they think but they worry about the consequences. Controversial posts are mysteriously removed from China’s equivalent of Twitter, Weibo. They just vanish.
We, the people of Australia, are different. We have power.
We are not a passive audience in a crowded cinema with popcorn on our laps waiting for the previews to end.
We are participants. We have a voice and I think we should bloody well use it. Get up and say something. Say it loudly. Be heard.
You might think Julia Gillard is the ant’s pants. Fab. Say it.
You might think my Dad is ace. Cool. Write it.
You might think everyone sucks. Scream it.
Tweet something. Rant on Facebook. Put a video on YouTube. Put a sign on your front fence. Have a chat with your neighbour. Tell your friends. Email your local MP. Ring them up. Stop them at the news agent and make them listen. Call your local radio station. Have a rally Vote in an online poll. Write a song about it. Get on Mamamia and say, ‘OMG she’s just saying that because she’s KRudd’s daughter.’
Look, I know the parliament can seem alien at times—believe me, it’s even weirder when you’re there—but it is not out of reach. It’s ours. We own it.
Let’s own this spill, people. Let’s make it ours. Make your MPs work for you. Tell them what you want. Because unlike my mates in China, we have no excuse for simply sitting back and letting it happen.
Jessica Rudd, is a Canberra-born, Brisbane-raised ex-lawyer, ex-campaign worker and ex-PR consultant who lives with her husband in Beijing. She has written the occasional column, a host of legal letters, countless press releases and two novels Ruby Blues and Campaign Ruby.
So, if you were in caucus, which way would you vote?
Editor’s Note: We’ve been surprised that some readers have not understood that this is an opinion piece so we thought it might be helpful to clarify a few points. Jessica Rudd is the daughter of Kevin Rudd who is expected to challenge Julia Gillard for leadership of the ALP on Monday. That much is clear. Neither Jessica nor Mamamia is purporting this piece to be impartial political analysis. Jessica is not Laurie Oakes and has never pretended to be. But she is someone with a unique and undeniably newsworthy insight into the biggest news story in Australia this week.
Mamamia publishes opinion pieces every day and sometimes they are political. We publish views from the left, the right and everywhere in between. Tony Abbott, Jenny Macklin, Kate Ellis, Julia Gillard, Sarah Hanson Young and Malcolm Turnbull are among politicians who have had opinion pieces published on Mamamia in the past 12 months.
Mamamia is not the ABC but we do try hard to publish a variety of views to reflect the diversity of our audience but also TO START CONVERSATIONS among you, our readers. Because we don’t ever underestimate your intelligence. We know that you can see who wrote a post and make your own assumptions about their beliefs and motivations.
We are proud to publish Jessica’s posts here on Mamamia, just as we always have been. Yes, the invitation has been extended to any other politician or family member of a candidate who has something to say about this extraordinary and quite bizarre time in federal politics.
That invitation is ongoing.
And we are also pleased to announce the appointment of our first dedicated political correspondent for Mamamia, journalist Lauren Dubois who today files her first of many upcoming pieces from Canberra which you can read here.

I have to say that as a former KRudd lover, this move has made me lose all respect for him. I understand that he’s been through a huge amount of personal trauma, but to further endanger the Labor party (of which I am a supporter) with this grab at power seems to me just entirely selfish.
I want a PM with the best interests of the country in mind, not their own personal agenda.
loading...
As my grandfather says ‘We need a statesman’
Someone to LEAD the country.
I’m not happy with any of our current options. FRESH face and FRESH leadership required. Not someone tarred by this absolute shambles.
loading...
The K-Rudd PR machine in full motion…
loading...
Why would you call it a machine?
Jess is his daughter, she’s a writer and she has contributed to Mamamia lots of times. Where’s the spin here?
I think it’s all pretty out in the open!
loading...
Just wondering, if Jess lives in Beijing how is Rudd her local member? Don’t you have to live in the electorate to vote in it?
loading...
Until such time as she relinquishes her Australian citizenship, she has an obligation to vote, which means she has a local member.
loading...
All Australians must vote whether they live in Australia or overseas. You are registered to an electorate and vote for that member you choose in that electorate.
Cheers.
loading...
You don’t have to vote if you live overseas, you can choose to opt out during your absence.
loading...
I am sick of Labor factions deciding to overturn my vote because of their political games and I wouldn’t vote for that whack job Tony Abbott in a blue fit.
Seriously I would rather cop a fine than vote for anyone at the moment. None of them deserve my vote.
loading...
If your family really cared about the future of a progressive Australia, maybe you’d convince your father to retire gracefully with his legacy intact. The only way your intervention can end is in the election of an Abbott government.
loading...
For whatever reason, Kevin Rudd lost the confidence of his peers back in 2010. Was it shocking? Absolutely. Unprecedented? Certainly. Heart-wrenching? Undoubtedly. Wrong? Only the party knows.
But what I see today is a man who seems driven by a view that the Australian public, not the party, legitimised his leadership. Resigning as FM from the US was inappropriate and perfectly timed for the news cycle. As for the political utopia Kevin described where everyone plays nicely, it will never exist and he knows it. And he knows we know it.
Yes, much of the sheen left Kevin Rudd for me today and settled on our current PM. I don’t need to like or dislike her; I just need to know that she’s getting things done. In spite of the extraordinary times, she has shown great fortitude.
I am sure it is a most difficult time for everyone involved personally. However I hope my local member and our current government, will have the strength of character to put the country ahead of self-interest.
loading...
PS – I will not be lobbying my local MP. To do so will fuel the popularity contest. Only constituents in the electorates of Rudd and Gillard can say if they have been well represented. And only the Party can decide which leadership style is the most conducive to delivering its vision.
loading...
Good post Tania. Well said!
loading...
I adore Jessica Rudd – her writing (I’ve read the first book, the second is on my to-read list) seems really down to earth (particularly her baby body article on mammamia). K-Rudd raised her, he’s certainly doing something right! Love the article above!
loading...
I agree Laura.
JRudd is one of the best things KRudd has going for him.
In terms of ‘the proof is in the pudding’.
If he can be married to such a smart woman and raise such an outstanding daughter…. got to be on to a good thing….
[ps. i know that is oversimplified. but in these kind of times. and this kind of overload of bullshit political speak. a bit of proof in the pudding goes a LONG way with me!]
loading...
Bang! And that’s precisely the true poison of this. “Rudd has a lovely family, and JG is unmarried and childless.”
Doesn’t matter what the track records are, doesn’t matter what the woman has achieved in the very sphere that’s being discussed.
loading...
Seeing K-Rudd sitting on the backbench alone the day after he was rolled was a brave moment.
loading...
Maybe the reason he sat alone, was because he caused such rancour amongst those who worked with him.
Would you sit next to and hold the hand of an unpleasant, bitter man whose colleagues had finally had enough? I doubt it.
loading...
OMG she’s just saying that because she’s KRudd’s daughter.
loading...
You talk here about censorship. You father and Senator Conroy were hell bent on introducing mandatory internet censorship in Australia. Do you think that this has changed? Is Kevin MKII going to leave the Internet alone? We can all see that he and Conroy are now mortal enemies. Thank you.
loading...
Very good point, Mr/Ms “Mandatory Internet Censorship”. Jessica, could you kindly have a work with Mr Rudd and get back to us with an answer to this question. I will happily spend the whole weekend on my unencumbered Internet connection to contact MPs and post on FaceBook pages in support of Kevin, if he makes his position clear. If he is still opposed to a free Internet, I think you can safely say that most people in this demographic will shun him 100%. Thank you and all the best with your campaigning.

My thoughts exactly. I voted for Rudd in 07 and never have I ever been more disappointed than when discussion regarding implementing the internet filter began. I was devastated that the party I voted for would introduce such legislation. I changed then to the Greens. I won’t go back until I am assured that the filter will never ever be introduced by Labor again.
loading...
If your dad loses on Monday, please could he resign from parliament and force an election? That way we will be ensured a say.
loading...
Jessica Australians will “own it” as you say when Labor.. Julia or Kevin… will be laughed out of office at the next election
loading...
This article is a complete conflict of interest. I can’t believe anyone with experience in journalism would run it.
loading...
Hi Allison,
Where is the conflict, exactly?
loading...
I think she means it couldn’t possibly be objective? But I don’t think Jessica is claiming to be objective. For her. its personal. And I think she wants us to make it personal. At least everybody is talking about politics
I think personally Gillard has done a tremendous job in difficult circumstances. And I would love to read a piece written by the Prime Minister’s dad, he’s all class. Possibly too classy to put his oar in…
loading...
Exactly! It’s an opinion piece, it’s not supposed to be “objective”. (even though it was admirably politically objective!)
loading...
Well,
A conflict of interest relates to a circumstance that could *possibly* influence a view or behaviour. It doesn’t relate to a circumstance that has *definitely* influenced views or behaviours. It’s also not dispelled by the fact that the article doesn’t overtly back one party over another in this particular contest, or exhort others to back them. Rather, arguably that lack of declaration exacerbates the conflict. A conflict of interest refers to a circumstance that *could* prejudice a view on a given topic.
In this instance, there is a clear conflict of interest. The author is a family member of one of the candidates, and has made it clear in this article that her political support in the past has been for this family member. She is advocating a particular campaign strategy designed to influence the internal processes of government, where one of the candidates is her father.
I’m not saying I don’t think this is good campaign strategy. It is.
loading...
LOL All media has a conflict of interest. At least this piece is honest about it.
loading...
How about getting Tim to write a post too? Ah Mamamia you’re really showing your hand with this one.
Sorry Jess but I am 100% behind Julia Gillard. I don’t think she’s the ‘ants pants’, I think she’s been a good Prime Minister under exceptionally difficult circumstances.
loading...
He’s welcome to!
loading...
I’m a big fan of yours Rick (let’s face it, you rock) but this piece does not sit well with me. It’s trite and patronising and feels like a big ad!
loading...
it feels like it cause it is!
don’t be fooled
this is a co-ordinated family approach
loading...
Sorry Rick but that’s not good enough. Attempts on your part to contact someone equally close to Gillard, such a relative or good friend, should have taken place before this article was run.
Mamamia is allowing itself to be played for a fool by the Rudd spin machine.
loading...
Ah, no. This is an opinion piece. We don’t run ‘face-off’. We’ve run Tony Abbott on the site before, we’ve run people I don’t agree with. You know why? To get people *talking*. Disagree with the piece if you want, you’re entitled to, but we’re entitled to run it. And if we get a submission from anyone in Gillard’s camp … or Katter’s for heaven’s sake, we’ll run that too. Our readers are many and varied.
loading...
I’ll write a piece about my love for the Libs!
loading...
Please do. I’d love to read it.
loading...
Just when I thought I couldn’t like you any more!
loading...
Come on people, this isn’t the ABC. It’s an OPINION website! With OPINIONS.
loading...
Sorry Rick but this isn’t an issue where you can afford to be so dismissive. Jess isn’t piping up with an opinion about a celebrity divorce or hemline length this season – she is clearly arguing the Rudd camp PR line four days out from a meeting which will determine the next PM of this country.
This lofty talk of idly sitting around and waiting to receive submissions from the Gillard camp is not nearly the response we your loyal readers deserve.
To be honest I think what has happened here is that no-one at Mamamia quite understood the stakes here and the poor judgment showing in agreeing to run this piece from the former PM’s daughter.
I would hope that now that many of your sensible readers have brought it to your attention some corrective action will be taken and you will simply stop shrugging off our concerns.
loading...
Concerns they may be, but we stand by the piece in its entirety. It was an open, frank, transparent *opinion* from a woman clearly connected to her father and it has obviously been read in that light. I don’t know how much more up front one can be in declaring biases in an opinion column?
loading...
Bla de bla! What exactly at stake? Why are some people are up in arms about anybody (whether it be someone connected to this or that party) encouraging the public to be active in voicing what they think or want? Jess may be running the same speel as her mother, sure, that’s what families do support one another! This piece I doubt will have a huge impact on what happens Monday, so why bag the publisher?
loading...
Sally, with all due respect – I think you are overreacting. Mamamia has presented pieces from both Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard before. It shows that even though the contributors may have views, they are trying to stay in the middle. Frankly, Jess Rudd is a fantastic writer through and through. If she called Mia to do a piece, who was Mia to refuse? I’m sure journalists around the country will be a little biased and still will present their views. Are you going to hound all those people too?
Jess Rudd. I’m a liberal supporter through and through. But if there is anyone that could give Tony Abbott a run for his money, it’s your father. He has done it before with John Howard. I think Julia Gillard and her followers are making all these disparaging comments against Kevin, because they are astounded at how fast karma comes around.
loading...
Me too Claudia, go Julia!
loading...
Thanks Rick, I am over the whole situation but it is interesting to read Jessica’s piece… Might just be reading more of this site. Well done. To those who think this is bias, anyone can say anything anywhere… It’s not too hard.
loading...
I hope Kevin Rudd can get the votes because Gillard can’t beat Abbott and he’s our worst Nightmare.
loading...
Well said Jessica. I would like to congratulate you on inspiring me to give a damn and make a comment.
You are so right. We do have freedom and the right to express our views. Thankyou for making me realize. How lucky we are.
loading...
Jess hs declared her interest and invited contrary views. Irrespective of whose side you are on, this is fair. If there were more Australians like Jess, Australia would be a better effin place than it is now. I’ll take the likes of Jess over any of the self-serving syncophants we are seeing on the news right now.
loading...
The PM is my local member and I am fine with her remaining so. Interesting opinion piece from the daughter of an egotistical backbencher with a sense of male entitlement.
loading...
This is an opinion piece advocating democracy. Nothing more, nothing less. It smells like a Gillard campaign team has hit the keyboards today.
They sure know how to use YouTube
loading...
Thank you for educating us all on modern democracy Jessica/Mamamia. None of us had any idea how life is in China VS Australia is, esp as really we are totes waiting for red carpet action. Please don’t publish this kind of patronizing drivel again. Thanks. S
loading...
Care factor zero. They can squabble all they like but the only ballot l care about is the next election because then we all get a say. Until then I don’t care if they elect a wombat to lead them.
loading...
Love this post! Echoes my sentiments completely, I just hope the labor party finds a good wombat before Monday!
loading...
Jess for Prime Minister!
loading...
I really like Jess, she’s wonderful, but I do not like this post, and I’m really, really disappointed with Mamamia for running it.
This is written by someone far, far too emotionally invested for it to be unbiased.
I would say more, but I actually can’t form words right now. Really disappointed.
loading...
This isn’t a news report, Noelle. I think our readers are smart enough to spot the connection.
loading...
I’m smart, and I see the connection. And I still think it was neither responsible nor fair to publish this.
loading...
To express disappointment that this piece be ‘allowed’ to be published only exacerbates the very censorship based situation that jess was referring to in china! How dare all of you insult the mental calibre of the readers by insinuating that we are all too stupid to spot the bias and it is contrarian journalism… We have the right to be biased, we have the right to be balanced and mostly we have the right to be heard. I have no love for gillard, Rudd or labor and can’t wait until their menagerie is ousted in it’s entirety but I do respect jess’s right to support her father/family/beliefs and do so as publicly as she pleases. Good on her…
loading...
Why on earth not run this piece ? We are all getting a litle bit precious don’t you think ? It’s freedom of speech, it’s an interesting read and if it is was not allowed to be published, we would be becoming the very country Jess was talking about in the article.
loading...
she should post on facebook . Disgraceful that Mammamia published- either they are deliberate supporters of Rudd or incredibly naive. Do you think any other news /info outlet would allow them selves to be used to spread viral campaign material???
loading...
Noelle – do you read the opinion pieces in the newspaper? When they run a piece by a politician, they don’t run another one next to it by someone from the other side discussing the same thing.
How is this different?
loading...
Actually the good ones generally do, unless it’s just a light piece. I would be shocked and dismayed if any of the half-decent papers in the country published an opinion piece by Tony Abbott tomorrow and didn’t feature an opinion piece by anyone from the Labor camp.
loading...
I agree I hope with all my heart that kevin gets back in .. How can anyone take her seriously when they pushed him out like they did !
loading...
Absolutely agree.
loading...
I agree with noelle too. I don’t think gillard was right to knife Kevin Rudd and I don’t think Rudd was a great PM either! Regardless mamamia should make a concerted effort to be balanced in it’s approach and I find the overt favouritism and political siding really alienating.
loading...
Completely agree with Noelle.
loading...
I have to completely agree with Sally here. Of course Jess Rudd is going to promote her father – That is understandable but you Mia had the choice to say no or at least wait until you got another article from the other camp. I know you don’t have to but it could have been more balanced…. very disappointing. Jess Rudd’s article would never have been objective and you of all people should have realized that.
loading...
I think you misunderstand what an opinion piece is. It’s someone’s opinion. The whole point is that it’s subjective.
We run opinion pieces every single day about a variety of issues including politics.
And even though this one was written by Jessica Rudd, she wasn’t even particularly advocating for her father. She’s advocating for people to become involved in the political process.
loading...
Mia, that is a little disingenuous. She’s delivering exactly the same message as Kevin and Therese in their press conferences. Sure, it’s an ad no problem. But dont make out its just a well timed piece about democracy in action.
loading...
Am I missing something? Jess Rudd is writing a post about the spill. It’s a huge scoop for mamamia. Well done guys.
loading...
Sometimes people seem to expect Mamamia to be the ABC. I don’t know why anyone would be surprised that Jess would write about her Dad. She’s written pieces for MM before, this is pertinent and something she knows well.
loading...
Can I respectfully point out that the responses from the Mamamia team are bordering on insulting? We know what opinion pieces are, we understand WHY you ran this piece, and yet a lot of readers are saying it doesn’t sit well with them – more so than other opinion pieces.
Please don’t insult our intelligence or our understanding simply because some of us do not agree with the basis of this piece.
loading...
There does seem to be a smugness to their comments.
loading...
Agree!
loading...
Agree x 100
loading...
Rick and Mia are always smug in their comments. Don’t mind us were just the readers who are giving your site life!! No us, no you and no money so stop treating us like idiots and listen to people’s concerns. You don’t have to agree but consider opinions instead of taking your previous little b list writers sides.
loading...
I’m always happy to listen
But sometimes we will disagree with some of our readers. Just the way things are!
loading...
Agree, but this does seem to be the pattern of behavior Mamamia staff display when challenged. Mia is often the worst.
loading...
Well, that is a publisher’s prerogative really. This blog/magazine is not a democracy…(more like a benevolent autocracy). You can always change your news/entertainment source. (BTW not a fan of the article either).
loading...
And most of your opinion pieces don’t have “exclusive to mamamia” plastered all over them…
loading...
Are we certain this piece was written by Jessica Rudd? Her key messages are remarkably similar to those given in Mr Rudd’s press conference this morning. Coincidence or campaign?
loading...
I completely agree with you Mia! Tell me people, in which sentence is Jess promoting her father, because I can’t see it!? I got two things out of that OPINION piece: I have no desire to live in Beijing and I’m going to email my local member today. Let’s not waste time criticizing mamamia and have a real discussion about the issue!
loading...
“Get involved because daddy is doing better in the polls.” Got it.
loading...
I don’t know how what she wrote could possibly be more neutral and unbiased. She obviously has a preference for one potential PM but that in my view had little influence on this article about individual pro activeness in government.
loading...
I think the point is that Jess Rudd wrote this and it is clearly a promotional tactic for her father the other disappointing thing is that Mamamia published it, knowing who she is and not offering an alternative article from the other side …but then again you have a choice (just like the article says)…you have the choice not to subscribe to Mamamia and never read any of the articles again
loading...
But the article isn’t saying “Rudd supporters make yourselves heard, Rudd is good, Gillard is evil etc”. The writer has her preferences but the article itself doesn’t. It’s telling supporters of both Gillard and Rudd (as well as those who support neither) to make their opinion heard. A very unbiased suggestion.
loading...
No, it doesn’t have to, because Rudd is ahead in the polls.
This is the Rudd version of the mining industry campaign against the superprofits tax or the clubs australia’s campaign against mandatory pre-commitment.
That is to say, it is a cynical attempt to exert influence over something you don’t have access to via popular appeals disguised as helpful community messages. Mining companies didn’t have the numbers in government, so they went for the public. Rudd doesn’t have the numbers in the caucus, so he’s going for the public.
It stinks when interest groups do it and it stinks now.
loading...
Oh my goodness. How about all those hating on MamaMia for supposed “bias” try and shift the chips on their own shoulders first? How about putting aside your pseudo intellectualism for one second and reading this guest article objectively? Yikes.
Ps. It’s not an advertisement because none of you get a vote on Monday and thank God for that.
loading...
Well said Leah
loading...
I think you all may have read jess’ name & missed the point of the article, or maybe I did? Yes there’s is a political mess going on, yes it does affect jess personally but I got from the article that really, for all of us in Australia, we’re pretty fortunate to be able to comment/laugh/scream/rant over it. Something I certainly take for granted. Xx
loading...
I agree Emma! She is just saying to people go out and do something, be vocal….don’t just sit back and whine about who is in power or not!
Good piece Jess!
loading...
Hm I don’t think that’s true, polling shows that the public support Rudd over Gillard while caucus are maybe borderline, therefore the Rudd camp are pushing the public to get involved. Personally I wouldn’t vote labor at this point no matter what so I really don’t care.
loading...
I agree good on u Jess …
loading...
In a few months you’ll all be able to complain about Tony Abbott trying to impose all manner of racist, classist, uncaring policies appealing to the greedy who are only ever thinking about ‘what’s in it for me?’. In the meantime, I really enjoyed Jess’ perspective on the current situation. Thanks for presenting it in this forum.
loading...
With all respect Noelle.
I LOVE it. I am after bias. I want to hear what people ACTUALLY think.
Whether they are pro labor or pro liberal or pro g or rudd.
Thanks for publishing this MM.
JRudd for PM!
loading...
But she hasn’t told us anything!!
loading...
Great read MM and I’m not even a Rudd supporter. To write that the MM staff are being insulting?! Are you serious?
loading...
The argy barry about Mamamia running this post is bizarre. If you’ve turned on the TV or listened to the radio or read any newspaper or news site in the past 24hours it’s full of people from all sides of politics and people from Team Rudd and Team Gillard giving their views.
This is merely another view. Jessica Rudd is not hiding her connections to one of the candidates. Come on.
Silly nonsense.
loading...
Agreed. Some of the responses to this piece are truly bizarre. It is simply someone’s opinion (someone who has made no effort to conceal her identity). If only political reporters were so up front about where their loyalties lie.
I’m so sick of this ‘pc’ crap. We’re not all sheep remember – we can make up our own minds.
loading...
“it’s simply someone’s opinion”
“Someone” that conveniently happens to be Kevin Rudd’s daughter. Funny how he volunteered this piece too, of course she did! Kevin’s on the campaign trail now!
Yawn at everyone hiding behind the “opinion piece” excuse, like that somehow mitigates this one sided article being run from a potential PM candidate 3 days out from a leadership ballot.
Yes, we the readers are critically aware you are not the ABC mamamia. Does this somehow make you exempt from reporting fairly or even offering “opinion” pieces from both sides so that you can even pretend to be balanced in this debate.
loading...
Yes the responses concerning “unfairness” are ridiculous! Advocating democracy from any camp is not unfair to anyone!
I smell Gillard’s office afoot. Anymore stunts on the cards?
loading...
So, every journo has to seek opinions from the communists, the fascists, and all other minorities every time a piece is written? Get serious; and I’m an ex ABC journo.
loading...
This whole thing is a disarster, because every day it moves us closer to an Abbott Govt. As a woman that terrifies me! We are entering into fragile economic times, people are loosing there jobs and things are not looking any better any time soon. We need solid leadership from Govt at Federal and State level – it’s time for people to pull it together and be decisive
loading...
Agreed. The thought of abott in charge of this country terrifies me.
loading...
As a women this terrifies me? Seriously? An honourable man who won the leadership on policy terrifies you? Personally,18 months more of this ridiculous government terrifies me!
loading...
Are you familiar with Abbott’s stance on women’s reproductive rights, Justintime? Women have good reason to be terrified.
loading...
Diana The Huntress, I think you’re confused with Abbott’s personal beliefs as opposed to any policy he would run as PM. For instance, while he doesn’t support abortion himself, he has gone on record over and over (and over) again saying that he would never introduce a policy reflecting his own personal beliefs on this issue. I think women are doing themselves a disservice everytime they cry “But what about women under an Abbott Government”. We make up more than half the population – how politically dumb to alienate us.
Mia Freedman has said herself that while she initially was “scared” for women under an Abbott government, after meeting with him her perspective changed somewhat. There’s an article somewhere in the archives on this website.
loading...
No, Abbott’s the one who gets confused with his personal beliefs and the policies he would run as PM.
loading...
What policies are you referring to? I’m yet to see any significant policies put forward by Abbott. And that in itself is terrifying.
loading...
Is it a spill? I thought it is only a “spill” after the challenger succeeds. I felt Rudd was wronged by his party when Gillard blindsided him, but now..he needs to get over it IMO. He’s doing untold damage. I can’t see how Labor will recover from this and they were already in a tenuous position.
loading...
Jess can we vote for you? Because this is the most sense I have heard anyone speak in the realm of politics in a long, long while

Jess,
Thanks for the reminder to engage with our fantastic democracy.
I’ve emailed my local member and urged him to support Julia Gillard.
She’s not perfect (who is?) but she has certainly made some impressive achievements as Prime Minister during the last 20 months.
She seems like a calm, focussed and intelligent woman who is more interested in achieving results than vain self-promotion.
Having said that, from my position it’s impossible to know who’s telling the truth. I’ll never know what really happened behind closed doors.
So the bottom line for me is that I trust people like Nicola Roxon, Kate Ellis, Bill Shorten and Stephen Smith. If they say she’s a better leader then I believe them.
loading...
Well said (as always) Karen, echoing my sentiments exactly.
loading...
Agreed add quality performers like plibersek and Wong who have also said Gillard a better PM.
loading...
… and Kate Lundy. The list is a long one!
loading...
Karen you are a welcome voice of reason.
loading...
Very kind, thanks.
loading...
You had me until you mentioned bill shorten.
loading...
Ha! Okay, so he’s not that popular.
Did you happen to see him on Q&A the other night? He was really put under the pump but remained calm and logical throughout. Well, I thought so anyway
loading...
Brilliant post sometimesKaren
loading...
Nice of you to say, Elle, thanks
loading...
Totally dig this comment.
Yes I just said ‘dig’
loading...
Heartfelt post Jess. There’s no doubt your dad truly cares. The only question is why does he put himself through it? And good luck to him – I’d love to see him topple Gillard. And while you’re listening (reading), your brother made a huge impression on me that day your dad made his speech after his defeat. He behaved so beautifully whilst he stood there enduring your dad’s obvious pain and disappointment. He made a huge impression.
loading...
Truly cares? Heehee. As if any of them at that level do. I believe many politicians start out with the right ideals. But by the time they reach the top most of them have become so compromised and power-hungry it’s much of a muchness.
loading...
“Dog’s breakfast”, “ugly as”, “bloody well”…. Seriously? Do you know how intellectually insulting it is to throw in a few carefully chosen Australianisms and assume people will fall for it? That that will be enough? Lazy, lazy, lazy.
Fair suck of the sauce bottle, mate.
loading...
That was me, by the way. Forgot to put in my username.
loading...
I would want my name put to it as well. Great comment!
loading...
Christ there are a lot of Labor staffers responding to this post. Can you all stop reading frigging Mamamia and govern the country?
loading...
Thanks for the laugh after a shitty arvo
loading...
Yes!!!!! I just got a flick from one of them!
loading...
I wish one of them would respond with “We are not! Oh…damn.”
loading...
Interesting, if all us Gillard supporters really are ‘Labor staffers’ (so, so untrue) then perhaps that would be indicative that we don’t want Kevin Rudd back??
Think about it.
loading...
Well said Jess, this is a democracy and we should all participate. Otherwise faceless people will just continue to rule with their minority views and self interest. Apathy is a danger to democracy.
PS I’m afraid I am firmly in The Team Rudd camp:-) Your Dad in power gets my vote, Not in power Abbott gets my vote
and then we all loss.
loading...
I think the only way for the Labor party to save face is to get rid of Rudd and label him a troublemaker. I don’t like the fact he was let go in the first place, but this is so damaging to the party he’s meant to be supporting.
I appreciate with live in a democracy, and I’m sure the ALP are reading this!
loading...
Why can’t your dad be more like you?
loading...
I look forward to reading an article written for Mamamia by an immediate member of Julia Gillard’s family. Can we expect to see that published in the lead up to next Monday?
loading...
If one landed in my inbox, I would publish it immediately. This is not about Team Rudd or Team Gillard.
We are not the ABC. Jess asked me if she could write a piece for Mamamia because she had something to say.
As one of our most popular writers, I was hardly going to say no.
FYI: I have extended an invitation to Kate Ellis to write a post.
I hope she says yes.
And Tony Abbott is always welcome to write for us as he has done before – as has Julia Gillard!
loading...
While I have nothing but respect for the range of views and content usually featured on this site, I really do believe running this piece from Jess was highly inappropriate.
That she is a regular contributor does not alter the fact that this is a poorly timed and blatantly transparent appeal to readers on behalf of her father. Of course she offered to write it – and with the full approval of her dad no doubt! The onus was on you to politely decline or at least only run it in conjunction with a piece from a Gillard family member or loved one.
Mia I noticed below in a comment to another reader that you claim this is a bipartisan opinion piece. But it is nothing of the sort. Jess is simply echoing the line trotted out by both of her parents earlier today – that voters directly contact their local MP to put in a good word for Rudd. That is obviously their strategy.
I’m sorry but while I do believe your intentions were decent in running this piece, you have allowed your site in this instance to become an arm of the Rudd propaganda machine. I’m sure I am not the only reader to feel it is an insult to my intelligence and who feels that Mamamia is a lot better than this.
loading...
That’s not the Sally that is Julia Gillards press secretary is it?
Just so well written and well informed….just taking a punt.
If it is- how about just an article from you given Julia’s immediate family is a little thin on the ground….
loading...
you can’t seriously believe that gillard’s press secretary has time at the moment to sit on this website and respond to comments?
especially given the post itself has completely backfired and the most thumbs up are to people supporting gillard…
loading...
I can’t help but agree with the posters- mammamia staff are being particularly condescending to those who don’t support team Rudd, or those who don’t agree with the publication of this piece.
Hello- we are entitled to our opinions- as this is an “opinion” forum as you put it. And my opinion is that mammamia staff are condescending to their readers, letting their own political agendas cloud their ability to remain objective.

So there you have it
loading...
Is it just because people see the name ‘Jessica Rudd’ on the byline that they are accusing this article of agenda pushing? Jess is honest in the article, yes she supports her dad, as one would assume but nowhere does she say that we all must and like definitely should support KRudd too? She is telling us all to be politically active and by reading some of the comments you are which is great, but some of you need to take a step back and stop trying to blame Mamamia for this! We have heard A LOT of opinions in the last couple of days about “the spill” and this is just another, so stop trying to make it anything more.
Thanks for publishing this article, I think Jessica Rudd is fabulous and articulate and her point is spot on!
loading...
Honestly, how hard is it to understan it’s an OPINION piece. Everyones opinion is based on bias because we use our own life experiences to from our point of view. The point is , it IS a free country , MM can publish whatever they like – Jess can write whatever she wants too. People are missing the message that jess was trying to convey : instead of burying your head in the sand – get involved !! . I don’t think it’s irresponsible at all to run this article.
loading...
Oh I am sure Abbott would just love to write for you with your admitted left wing loyalties (along with 90% of your readers) don’t think he is that much of a glutton for punishment!
loading...
Sophie, don’t be so quick to jump to conclusions. At least know what we’ve posted.
Tony Abbott has already written for us, he asked us if he could: http://www.mamamia.com.au/news/tony-abbott-on-mamamia-carbon-tax-is-not-the-right-answer/
loading...
Mia has admitted that she is a Labor supporter. I understand she and yourself can put that aside and be courteous to Abbott. The vast majority of your readers on the other hand, would take his contribution as an opportunity to fire bullets. Just saying!
loading...
Thanks for the link Rick. I read it at the time of publishing and from memory, thought it was amazing how so many readers could link the carbon tax to abortion, mysogeny and all other manner of things that they hate Abbott for. Amazing! As for this Jess Rudd piece… well you can’t blame her trying to give her Dad a leg up in the leadership battle. I doubt it will help him much but a great attempt nevertheless.
loading...
All in the name of debate
loading...
Sally, so well written and hits the nail of the head.
loading...
Hear, hear! Re: Sally: I look forward to reading an article written for Mamamia by an immediate member of Julia Gillard’s family. Can we expect to see that published in the lead up to next Monday?
loading...
That’s unfair. Jess is Kevin’s daughter and as such cannot possibly be unbiased. Arguably, she would not even be getting editorial space if not for that relationship – who is she, if not Kevin Rudd’s daughter? Julia has made her own life choices, as is her right, but in terms of ‘immediate family’, there is really only her partner, Tim, who could possible compete. She has no adult children and her parents are elderly. Whilst Kevin Rudd’s family may well feel they have a right to comment, they are not elected representatives of the Australian people and their vocal and public support today only serves to feed the cynicism around Kevin’s recent press conferences. He stated that he was resigning as Foreign Minister because he did not have the PM’s support and his family and others are lauding him for it; it would have been far more honest on his part to just admit that his was resigning in order to take an unfettered tilt at the leadership. Not comfortable with Jess being given this airtime, Mia – she’s not an elected politician (as are the other people you have cited) and she wouldn’t be on this site if she wasn’t Kevin’s daughter…..
loading...
Now here is a good comment!
Rick I have provided my full details on this post so you know who I am. I have also posted under Not Good & Unbelievable. I am not afraid to put my name next to my opinions! My e maill address is also provided. By the way Guest, that really is a good comment
loading...
Oh golly. Now I have to share my adoration bubbles between Zoe and Jess.
loading...
Do you reckon we can get Zoe for run for PM?
Not really sure if “adorable” is one of the qualities that I’m looking for in a politician but hey… Maybe she could replace the Queen on our coins?
loading...
Ooooooo I love the idea of putting Zoe on our coins! I too have massive ‘adoration bubbles’ for both Zoe and Jess
Oh and great piece Jess! We are so lucky to live in a country where we can freely voice our opinions. Thanks for reminding us.
loading...
Oh, come on, now. The “democratic process” in this country is an absolute farce. Is it any wonder people are apathetic?
And you know, at risk of sounding like a paranoid tinfoil hat type, here’s a question for you all to ponder: how do we know the system is even what we think it is? Short of asking every single Australian who they voted for, there is no way of knowing that our votes matter worth a damn. Say it’s all pre-decided, and the voting process and supposedly genuine sniping and infighting is to make us think we have a say and distract us from what’s actually going on?
loading...
I can’t help but laugh at conspiracy theorists like yourself.
loading...
Laugh away. I won’t take it personally.
loading...
that’s the problem – you probably should….
loading...
And have you ever read any philosophy? Proposing a theory doesn’t necessarily mean you subscribe to it. But I do think it’s an interesting question to ask. How transparent is the process, really? How much power do we actually have? The system is how it is because people have replaced questioning with whinging.
loading...
You’re probably right, though. Propaganda, distraction/deflection techniques, rigged votes and false dichotomies have never been used in any political system before, ever….
loading...
Also (yes, I know I’m banging on) the automatic dismissal of an idea as “ridiculous” often (not always, but often) has more to do with the dismisser’s fear-based attachment to the validity of their own worldview than the objective ridiculousness of the question being asked. Think about it…
loading...
I think you meant to include “dog whistle”….;)
loading...
The process is actually transparent. Not only do both sides have people there checking the count in an election (they are called “scrutineers”) but any member of the public can go to the ballot count for any electorate and see it for themselves. And btw I am not a politico, I’m a psychologist – that’s why I know the system is real and transparent – because even without being a politico I have access to these opportunities!
loading...
Names of the voters?
loading...
Jess Rudd for PM?
loading...
As a Liberal voter, I’d even support that. Nice words Jess. It’s a hard line to walk but you do it well.
loading...
Thanks Jess – I have just tweeted my local MP
Hope she listens – one thing is for sure if Julia is there at election day wont make the mistake of voting for her again … “No carbon tax under the government I lead” mmph
loading...
So, the campaigning begins. What a load of codswallop! People do tell their representatives what they want but unfortunately MPs don’t always listen. What they want is an end to the in-fighting so that the Government can get on with the job of running the country. Your father was shafted, and yes, it was lousy, but the current PM has done a good job of holding a minority government together. The only consequence of a ballot on Monday (regardless of the way it goes) will be a win for Tony Abbott at the next election. Jessica, perhaps you should use some of your obvious talents not to preach to the people about having a say but to preach to all MPs (including, and especially, your father) that they need to put aside all their differences and their egos, get over it, and allow this government to run its course until the next election. That then will be an appropriate occasion for the people to have a say.
loading...
I respectfully disagree – it’s always time for people to have a say. We shouldn’t just put some numbers in a box and then sit back for the next few years to allow the government to run its course; there’s a number of incidents in history where that led to dreadful results. One of the great things about democracy is that everyone is allowed to always question what’s happening (and in terms of the Opposition, whatever party that may be, that’s actually their job). I agree with Jess, say what you think to your MP, including if you want an end to the in-fighting – that’s still having a say.
loading...
Gotta say Jess I’m not a labour voter but by god I like Kev’s political mastery. This move will go down in political history and be taught in uni’s for a long time. I love that your Dad basically said you want me come and get me in the open. Good luck Mr Rudd, you’d almost get this liberal voters vote!
loading...
Good luck Kevin in your quest!I too am a liberal voter and could almost be swayed into voting for him.I am phoning my local Labor member this morning to voice my support for him!
loading...
great post! we sure are living in the land of the lucky! sure it’s a mess, sure it’s kind of embarrassing, sure we might be sick of hearing about it- but hey, at least we GET to hear about it.
loading...
One small issue….you assume Jess that we are all Labor voters, or our electorate is a Labor seat. Mine is far from it, and has been a Liberal seat since the first election the seat appeared in. Furthermore, I live in WA, which has just 5 sitting members in both Houses from the Labor Party. Liberal voters don’t want a spill, they want an election. The Queensland state election in a few weeks will be a pointer to why the Federal Government do not want to go to the polls……
As much as you think we have a say in this, we don’t. We didn’t have a say in Oakshott, Windsor and Wilkie siding with the PM at the last election to form a minority Government. In fact, a straw poll of both Oakshott’s and Windsor’s electorates showed those two men went against the wishes of their electorate. So much for people power, eh?
The only way the punters will have a say is if your Dad decides in the next few days not to contest (or loses the ballot), resigns from the ALP but stays on as an Independent Member for Griffith. This gives Mr Rudd the balance of power in the Lower House, a position the Government does not want to be in. Hopefully this would force the hand fo the PM to go back to the polls once more. Then the people have a say!
loading...
Last time I looked WA had some ALP Senators.
They get a vote in caucus.
So call them.
loading...
a) The Senators aren’t the duty senators for my electorate.
b) I’m not a Labor voter (I used to be, but not after the last 4 years).
Don’t forget that part of the issue that Rudd was dropped in the first place is that he wanted to change how internally the Labor Party worked. He wanted to remove the power the different factions had, remove the power of the caucus, and select the Cabinet based on who he, being the Prime Minister, thought should have a role. This was part of his undoing, but in the process we got the exact opposite when Gillard became PM. The reward for the coup was to promote those power brokers to the Cabinet. The caucus stayed put, the factions continued on as normal.
If anyone thinks that speaking to their sitting Labor member will make a difference, think again.
loading...
I agree with you. I’m also in WA, in a safe liberal seat. I have emailed my MP many times about gay marriage, asylum seekers etc and he doesn’t care in the slightest. I’m sure there is a watch on my house…
loading...
I actually know a lot of people in WA who are Liberal supporters but do NOT want to see Tony Abbott become Prime Minister, and therefore are happy for a spill to go ahead…
loading...
Rod, you also have a short memory. Oakshott, Windsor, Wilkie and the Greens went with Julia Gillard because they trusted her more than Tony Abbott. And they were right – legislation has passed that has benefited their electorates, and we all know what straw polls mean (pick the people chewing straw, maybe?).
Gillard’s government have passed many good bills in the past year, but from all the squawking and scuttlebutt from mining companies, the media and Abbott’s mob, an alien would get the impression it’s been a dead government.
The rightful election is not until 2013 – perhaps people should just get over themselves.
And with all respects, Jess, and I love my dad too and would stick up for him, but maybe it’s time your dad faced the inevitable with grace.
loading...
Sheryl, I find it just a tad insulting that because you don’t like what the polls have been saying about Gillard – and for months!! – that these are the opinions of people who chew straw ie dumb and ignorant. Windsor says he went for Gillard over Abbott as he wanted “stability”. He’s not the only politician looking like a goose now with this farce.
loading...
Rod, interestingly, my husband’s theory is exactly as you described. Rudd resigning from the ALP and becoming a independent for the seat of Griffith. Not sure how this would bide in his longing for a seat on the UN council though. Time will tell!
loading...
That Rudd’s daughter is doing PR spin for his attempt to be PM again
loading...
I will never forgive Labor for knifing a sitting Prime Minister. That if I so choose to do it is my perrogative at the ballot box not the job of caucus. The sooner Labor actually get this into their thick heads the better off we’ll all be.
loading...
Actually it is their job! And not yours because we don’t vote for the PM. We vote for a member of parliament and the party chooses the leader. As it always has been.
loading...
Agreed Janie – how do people not know this? You vote for you local member and party. The members of the party decide who the leader is going to be. It’s nice if we know when this is going to happen – but in politics nothing will go to plan.
loading...
That may be so, but you cannot deny the impact of the Kevin 07 campaign. Many voters did feel as though they were voting for a Prime minister (he was the face of the campaign) as well as a local member and therefore would have felt ripped off to see Kevin removed from this position and not face the voters again. You have to wonder if the results would have been different at the 07 election if the ALP didn’t have Kevin as the leader.
loading...
Great post, Jessica. We are lucky to live in a democracy and it’s important to keep that in mind when we all think we’re having a terrible political time of it. True, true.
loading...
Lunacy. The pointless hopelessness of voting *for* a major party has been comprehensively proven by both the current “government” and the opposition over the last few years. I’m surprised that anyone could be bothered writing more than 50 words on this topic.
loading...
Im a Liberal through and through and I love the spirit behind this post. Thank god we can express our dislike of government and politicians and not risk persecution. And I would be campaigning for my Dad too! (just quietly, I am team K-Rudd too, even though it makes the chances of my party being elected next time around a lot more slim, Julia gives me the creeps. I wish that our first female prime minister was more honorable and didn’t come to power through faction puppeteering)
loading...
I liked Kevin Rudd so much more before yesterday. Now he looks like a sulky, petulant child who is mad because he didn’t get his own way. Yes it is a soap opera Kevin, YOUR soap opera. YOU could have put an end to it whenever you wanted. This whole thing makes me so, so cross. We look like a nation of fools and all this only makes it more likely that Tony Abbott will win the next election. Thanks for the opportunity to have my say, it is this: If Kevin Rudd becomes leader again (oh the farce of it all) Labour will lose my vote for good.
loading...
unfortunately my local member is the Mad Monk….don’t think I’d have much luck getting my views through there ….
loading...
This is a great piece, Jessica. I think we sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live in such a healthy democracy.
loading...
I love this! i live in Singapore and part of the conditions of my visa is that I can’t criticise the government. The government that has been in power for 48 years and controls all the print, TV and radio media.
So, Australia embrace your political freedom.
loading...
Wow, that’s fascinating (and disturbing) that that’s one of the conditions of your visa! At least they’re up front about it, I guess.
loading...
Australians don’t know how lucky they are to be able to express an opinion about their government.
We can openly and freely express our opinions about our leaders without fear of retribution.
I recently visited Zimbabwe and was specifically told by my tour guide not to talk about politics because you could get arrested for your negative comments.
loading...
First up; Like it or hate it- it’s a pretty ballsy post. Well done, Mamamia and Jess- I hope you’re brave enough for the on-slaught?
I like Jess’s Pa. Top bloke. Truth be told- I’ll vote Labor or Greens unconditionally- especially if Tony Abbot is in power. There is only one Liberal leader I like, and that’s Malcolm Turnbull and he doesn’t look like he’ll be taking the baton any time soon.
But honestly, this in-fighting is ridiculous. It makes everyone involved look petty and unsupportive. And really bad.
It makes my ordinarily calm, white-girl, middle class self wanna riot like I’m in South London. I’m truly that angered by it.
Why? Because it distracts from the real issues… What about Aboriginal Health? What about our water? What about gay marriage, youth unemployment, lack of affordable housing, refugees drowing off the coast of Christmas Island…. Oh, I could go on an on and on….
Challenge if you want to- but this is dog-awful timing if you ask me. Not supporting it at all, for all my two cents are worth.
loading...
Speaking of which; can someone PLEASE explain to me while Turnbull isn’t the leader of the opposition? The libs need someone more moderate and I don’t understand why there hasn’t been another challenge there…
I’d certainly have to think twice before voting Labor again if he was running instead of Abbott
loading...
Turncoat isn’t leader of the Liberals because he’s secretly a Laborite at heart, does that answer your question?
loading...
Nesy, I just want someone who actually gives a shit about our country, not their own popularity, or the party line. Looks like we’ll never get that, if that’s the attitude Coalition voters (yes, you vote for the Nationals every time you vote Liberal).
I’m a swinging voter in Labor heartland, btw.
loading...
Elle – Turnbull is disliked intensely by the heirachy of the Liberal Party because he holds more liberal views on a lot of policies. They are a little scared to give him free rein. He believes in climate change which is against Liberal Party policy. He is a Republican which is not popular in the Liberal Party. Although Abbott is not liked much by anyone the Liberal Party is happy to leave him there because the media is doing such a good job of screwing the Labor Party and their achievements. Don’t ever forget that Turnbull was behind the Godwin Grech disaster – he comes across very well but he is ruthless too.
loading...
The trouble with Turnbull is that he’s still under the influence of big business and Tony Abbott. With regard to the National Broadband Network’s roll-out, he’s an economist “whose priority is getting everyone on a reasonable connection sooner rather than later (instead of waiting ages for the NBN) while technologists are more focused on future technologies and requirements. However, if arguments like the former had won through in the 1930s then the Harbour Bridge would only have one lane. Instead, all of its eight lanes are now packed and we had to build the Harbour Tunnel to further accommodate the load.”
This excellent article in full explaining why Turnbull has to think again… maybe if he was leader of the Coalition, his good sense would come to the fore. http://www.abc.net.au/technology/articles/2012/02/21/3435975.htm?WT.svl

I dont know why, but it feels dirty reading a post by Rudd’s daughter. Even if it is a good article, it feels like the wrong time.
loading...
Agree. Feel like it’s just part of the Rudd campaign spin. Let’s contrast Rudd with childless unmarried Gillard
loading...
This post is all kinds of wrong -whoever you support in this issue this post is just giving further voice to Jessica’s dads strategy -mammamia at a new low
loading...
Agreed, it is blatant propaganda.
Mamamia ever thought of remaining impartial at a time like this?
loading...
I agree -this post is all kinds of wrong. Whoever you support in this issue this article is a blatant ploy in supporting the Rudd camps strategy -this is exactly what Jessica’s dad has advised people should do -mammamia at a new low providing their friends with access to an audience or judging their actions through rose coloured glasses ( remember the friendly Deborah Hutton post).
loading...
Totally agree. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. What she said could’ve been written by any MM contributor…
loading...
Hi Karen,
Mamamia has published posts by Jess many times before. She is one of our most popular contributors.
She contacted me about writing this piece and just like every similar post we run on Mamamia, it’s an opinion piece.
This is Jess’s opinion.
And it’s actually a bipartisan one if you read what she’s saying.
loading...
Actually Mia it is not -this is the Rudd strategy -he ,his wife and now his daughter have all weighed in with their media contacts to work the strategy – your comments appear to be politically niaive Mammamia seems to hide behind opinion piece quite often -Jess contacted you and asked to provide the piece……..out of the goodness of her heart?
loading...
Maybe she truly believes what’s she’s saying – which is say WHATEVER you like, just make sure it’s said. And be glad you don’t live in a place where that can get you arrested.
loading...
I wonder though if her piece has inspired anyone to contact their MP? I wonder if anyone has since the Rudd’s ‘suggested’ all Australian’s do so? I doubt it.
To say that by her writing on this site has done anything to help her father’s case at 10 am tomorrow is hopeful at best!!
loading...
I think the fact that the post is written by Jess (who clearly identifies herself as being Kevin’s daughter) makes it a more credible piece. It’s obvious where Jess’ allegiance lies, so at least the reader can make their own judgements about how that might influence her agenda & what she wrote.
loading...
It’s not that bipartisan, she says ‘I put a 1 next to his name’…come on. Whether she says so or not this is written by Jess, now, at this time, to garner support for her family. Even if she is a regular contributor does not mean MM can act like this article – at this time – is entirely without an agenda. That’s just silly.
loading...
Thanks so much for your response Mia. I found myself wanting to agree but for some reason if felt weird. It was like french kissing a friend. You like them but you just didn’t want to cross that line with them!
loading...
Im sure it’s been done many times after a few (lot of?) drinks!
loading...
With all due respect Mia (and Jess) as far as I can see Jess has written 7 pieces in the last two years with about 1100 responses in total (prior to this piece). And one of those was to promote her own book. Compare that with say Kate Hunter 61 posts or Kylie Ladd 15 posts or Meschel Laurie 15 (brilliant posts). I’d hardly call her one of the most popular contributors. I don’t actually have a problem with her post – I think it’s pretty moderate but it disappoints me that you defend your decision by inferring part of the reason you chose to publish this is because she is so popular with us.
loading...
I agree, it’s disingenuous.
Opinion polls show that right now, people (who have short memories and sympathy for Rudd) support Rudd over Gillard, but the Labour party members who who have worked with/for both of them, support Gillard, can’t stand Rudd and don’t want him back. If this were not the case, he’d be back in power by now!
So it seems to me that this post is pure political manipulation – trying to get Rudd back in via his popular support, not via his support in government – but prettily dressed up as a message about democracy.
It’s clever manipulation, exactly what I’ve come to expect from the Rudds…
loading...
Have to agree with you, Rose. I just hope backbenchers have ethics and remember how difficult it was to work with Kevin Rudd as PM.
It bugs me to see people saying “I voted for him’ blah blah, when really, they did not vote for him, they voted for his party.
We are not a presidency, we’re under the Westminster system. If they voted just because of one man, they don’t understand what voting means in this country and one could question whether they deserve a democratic vote at all.
Please inform yourselves, people! And stop relying on the media for information.
loading...
Clearly Sheryl if you link to an article from the abc website about Turnbull you are relying on the media for information! Or is it only the media that says what you like to hear?
Technically yes, we don’t vote directly for the PM. But when we vote for a party, the leader represents that party in the minds of many people and influences the vote. So Rudd being removed in 2010 irks people as they didn’t get the chance to vote for or against his leadership at an election.
loading...
What you say Sheryl is technically correct, but if you’re old enough to remember the mid 80s then you’ll remember the “Bob Hawke for PM” campaign, when in fact only the voters of the seat of Wills would be able to vote for Hawke.
I don’t want Mr Rudd as PM again, but I want Ms Gillard even less. It is her government’s actions that have led to my current employment (or lack thereof) situation.

I think that the one thing that some of the government (and opposition) members forget very quickly is who put them there. The ones that remember us and recognise that they need to keep us onside will also be the most vocal about who they feel is the best candidate for the top job.
I can voice my displeasure (and I do) on twitter, I can say that maybe the way to sort this mess out is to call a referendum – if the caucus can’t sort out who the PM should be, let the australian people decide. Not an election, but a vote as to who the PM should be from within the ranks.
The problem that all this voicing has is that I will get zip in the way of a formal response, the response I will receive is gaining several flamers on twitter – I have just blocked the last one, several new “friends” on twitter from the opposition, woo. hoo. and nothing else.
if my voice is one in the wilderness, so be it. I agree, we don’t want one channel broadcast, we don’t want social media lockdown, we just want to be heard and for our representatives to reflect our opinions and attitudes. In the current mess, I doubt very much that anyone is listening to us from the house on the hill…

Brilliant Jess
I have to admit, I cannot see how your Dad can have the numbers on Monday to take back the leadership, but I voted for him and I voted for JG and I think they both did great jobs in very trying conditions.
In the end though, as a voter, I just really want this all to be done with because the state of politics in this country is making me despair. I don’t pretend to understand what the heck is going on down in Canberra but I do know Tony Abbott has been celebrating Christmas for nearly 2 years now and that makes me stabby
PS – You and your mom are doing a fantastic job on the campaign trail
