Tomorrow, when I fly in, I’m coming home to a political situation that most Australians think is a dog’s breakfast. What’s happening is ugly as. It’s infuriating. Messy. I agree. It is and it needs to be sorted out.

But unlike what happened in 2010, when Australia went to bed with one prime minister and woke up to another, now we have time.

This leadership ballot is happening in caucus, the group of 103 Labor MPs and senators we elected, but that doesn’t mean it is not our vote.

We are their employers. My Dad works for me.  I often remind him of that. He is my local member and I helped put him there. I walked into a church hall and in the privacy of a polling booth I put a one next to his name.

You’re all employers too. You might not be related to your employees, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have access to them. When they aren’t doing their jobs, you can tell them. When they are misbehaving, you can reprimand them.

I live in Beijing, a city with a population the size of our whole nation—twenty-two million people.

Like us, they get up in the morning. They have a shower and wonder if their favourite top is dry yet. They get dressed and go to work. They have lunch with their colleagues and bitch about HR. At the end of the day they swap heels for runners and go home. They order dinner from the grease-stained menus on the fridge, call their mum and switch on the telly.

At the same time each night on almost every free-to-air TV station all over China is the same national news broadcast. I don’t mean it’s similar, I mean the exact same show. In sync. You can flick between stations and the same guy is on your screen telling you what is going on, or at least what he’s allowed to tell you is going on.

You can’t just go, ‘this is boring, that guy’s tie is feral—I wonder what’s happening over on The Project.’

You can’t write to your local MP about it because you don’t have one and a complaint to the network is a complaint to the government.

When you watch international stations like the BBC and CNN, stories about China often disappear. The screen goes blank.

There’s no Twitter or Facebook. Don’t get me wrong, there are social media platforms and they’re epic. But in China it’s all still new and risky. People do say what they think but they worry about the consequences. Controversial posts are mysteriously removed from China’s equivalent of Twitter, Weibo. They just vanish.

We, the people of Australia, are different. We have power.

We are not a passive audience in a crowded cinema with popcorn on our laps waiting for the previews to end.

We are participants. We have a voice and I think we should bloody well use it. Get up and say something. Say it loudly. Be heard.

You might think Julia Gillard is the ant’s pants. Fab. Say it.

You might think my Dad is ace. Cool. Write it.

You might think everyone sucks. Scream it.

Tweet something. Rant on Facebook. Put a video on YouTube. Put a sign on your front fence. Have a chat with your neighbour. Tell your friends. Email your local MP. Ring them up. Stop them at the news agent and make them listen. Call your local radio station. Have a rally Vote in an online poll. Write a song about it. Get on Mamamia and say, ‘OMG she’s just saying that because she’s KRudd’s daughter.’

Look, I know the parliament can seem alien at times—believe me, it’s even weirder when you’re there—but it is not out of reach. It’s ours. We own it.

Let’s own this spill, people. Let’s make it ours. Make your MPs work for you. Tell them what you want. Because unlike my mates in China, we have no excuse for simply sitting back and letting it happen.

Jess Rudd writes: This spill is ours. Own it.

So, if you were in caucus, which way would you vote?

Editor’s Note: We’ve been surprised that some readers have not understood that this is an opinion piece so we thought it might be helpful to clarify a few points. Jessica Rudd is the daughter of Kevin Rudd who is expected to challenge Julia Gillard for leadership of the ALP on Monday. That much is clear. Neither Jessica nor Mamamia is purporting this piece to be impartial political analysis. Jessica is not Laurie Oakes and has never pretended to be. But she is someone with a unique and undeniably newsworthy insight into the biggest news story in Australia this week.

Mamamia publishes opinion pieces every day and sometimes they are political. We publish views from the left, the right and everywhere in between. Tony Abbott, Jenny Macklin, Kate Ellis, Julia Gillard, Sarah Hanson Young and Malcolm Turnbull are among politicians who have had opinion pieces published on Mamamia in the past 12 months.

Mamamia is not the ABC but we do try hard to publish a variety of views to reflect the diversity of our audience but also TO START CONVERSATIONS among you, our readers. Because we don’t ever underestimate your intelligence. We know that you can see who wrote a post and make your own assumptions about their beliefs and motivations.

We are proud to publish Jessica’s posts here on Mamamia, just as we always have been. Yes, the invitation has been extended to any other politician or family member of a candidate who has something to say about this extraordinary and quite bizarre time in federal politics.

That invitation is ongoing.

And we are also pleased to announce the appointment of our first dedicated political correspondent for Mamamia, journalist Lauren Dubois who today files her first of many upcoming pieces from Canberra which you can read here.

I feel like Jessica could have written, “I like butterflies. They make me happy” and everyone would spout the exact same vitriol.

Mamamia, I am completely fine with this post. I like it, even. Anything urging us not to be politically apathetic is incredibly important.

But I feel that commenters aren’t protesting the content so much (you keep saying it’s an opinion piece, which you clearly stated) but the fact that anything at all coming from someone so close to Kevin Rudd – at the time it did – is an indirectly show of support for him; a bias that your readers don’t want.

Personally, I’m a labor voter myself. And I am all for you publishing absolutely ANYTHING you want because it’s YOUR website – I believe people should come to this community based on the content that you dictate, rather than you pandering to (often judgemental and ill-thought out) public opinion.

But I’m just trying to help you understand the backlash, because it doesn’t seem like you do – protesting that it’s an opinion piece oversimplifies the issue.

I think it’s pretty clear already that the Australian public is anything BUT apathetic about the current situation and this article is clearly just a front for Jess to ramp up the campaign for her Dad while he’s in transit and unable to communicate.

Loved Kevin saying he’d never stab a sitting PM in the back, but isn’t that effectively what this is all about. The same thing he would apparently “never” do.

What people fail to understand is we vote to elect a political PARTY on POLICY. Not individual leaders, hello – it’s not the United States.

Great piece, loved reading it. Awesome writing as always Jess, fantastic message to get across!

I did not at all feel uncomfortable reading this piece; and do not at all feel Mamamia in publishing this piece are taking TeamRudd stance (and this is coming from someone that does not want a leadership change come Monday).

I liked Kevin Rudd – the whole thing about the resource tax was rubbish, it was a media driven campaign against gaining a revenue that is fair dues to the australian people (and not that richest lady thats shouting now). I was dissapointed when the labour party slowly turned their heads and ditched supporting their leader. BUT I liked Julia too, and I voted for her… and now here we are, a bit of a rough patch and quickly we see a party that squabbles and is fickle and is spending my hard earned tax dollers talking about each other instead of talking about our health system… or educating my children. I still support Julia, I just wish her party would get a grip and unite. If they dont as hard as it will be to give my vote to tony (and believe me I cant stand him and all the negative crap that comes out of his mouth), at least we might have a term of government where they get on with the job of running our nation, for better or worse, at least the track record suggests they will get on with it…. COME ON LABOUR Im really hoping you come to your senses before its too late…

I love the Rudds, I love Therese, Jessica and Kev. I would love a “Kevin in 07″ t-shirt (was living OS at the time so missed out, did vote for Kev though).
I was so sad that Australia lost such a fantastic prime minister when he was ousted.
I was sad when Australia lost the best foreign minister we’ve ever had just a few days ago.
I will email my MP and tell them I´ll only vote for them if they vote for Kev.

But to be honest, I’m not sure who I´ll vote for in the next election as the image we are promoting internationally is that we have a childish government who spend their time (and our hard earned money), being mean to each other rather than running the country.
So you’ve kept my vote for now Kev – but you need to clean up this spill if you’re going to keep it.

Australian families usually keep out of politics and that is how it should stay.
I don’t want to be told by a wife and a daughter how I should do something. the Rudd family is beginning to look like characters from a soap opera. Please stop Jessica.
Perhaps if Kevin had taken his loss as PM like a man then Labor would not be having the problems it is now. Instead he has chose to have a hissy fit and destablise. Get over it all of you. We vote for the candidate – not his family.

Fine, you want to know what I think?

I think that every single politician is so politically inbred that they wouldn’t know real life if it bit them on the behind. Career politicians are so caught up in the machinations of party politics and power, that when things like the spill and the re-spill happen, all it shows is the desire for power, not the desire to represent the country. All i see are children fighting.

I think that while we live in a democracy, and have the ability to have a voice, that we would be deluding ourselves to think that every voice is equal and valued the same. Case in point: you Jessica. I get to comment on the situation. You get an entire article dedicated to your voice. You get newspaper/tv/radio airtime. And why?

Aside from being Kevin’s daughter, and writing a “fictional” book, why does your opinion get more air time than me? Why should we listen to you? You are obviously going to be heavily biased about all of this. You can’t not be, he is your father.

Why are we putting so much value, time and effort into your opinion. It’s ridiculous.

All this leadership fighting has done is made me HATE the labour party.

The sheer audacity and ego of all of the MPs, parties, “faceless men”, factional warlords, unions and interested parties is ridiculous.

If Gillard really wanted a mandate to lead – and to “get on with the job whilst moving forward” then she would call an election.

Go on Labour. I dare you.

I am a political being. I vote whenever I get a chance, I like to be where my opinion makes a difference, I serve on boards and committees, I’ve been elected to a local government council. It’s because I like to have some control over the sort of society where I have chosen to bring up my family. I like the fact that mostly justice is fairly applied, and when it’s not I know how to complain and to whom. I live in rural WA, and really the leadership battle on the other side of the country seems remote, and somewhat trivial. Mind you even as a liberal voter, I am not particularly happy with the opposition leader either. One thing I am impressed with is the family approach of team Rudd. I have met Jess, and she impressed me, and I follow Therese and KRudd on Twitter. Our instantaneous world doesn’t allow for measured considerations anymore, it’s all too knee jerk reactionary. Maybe what’s needed is some round table strategic conversation, good ole fashioned pro active planning. Step back, take a breath, take the personality out of the argument. Dealing with the personal back stabbing is not productive. Our politicians simply are not paid enough to have to put up with all this crap. We have the chance to all be winners here……

We DO live in a democracy, and we DO have the right and the privilege to have a say about who is sitting in the boss’s chair. To those of you disregarding the issues being raised because you feel it is a conflict of interest, would you give the same piece more credibility if it was written by the average Joe on the street who had never met KRudd? How about a celebrity you adored?

I don’t understand why everyone is against this article (or the author). I have read it three times (just to make sure I get my facts right before I attack anyone over the publishing of it or the author herself). I believe the author is encouraging us to “get involved” with what is going on at the moment and that is all. She happens to be the ex-prime minister’s daughter, and I wonder if she had of posted under a pseudonym she would have received this backlash and strong interest. But I do believe it is a powerful article. It may be more relevant leading up to a federal election. We are an apathetic “mob” and very quick to tear others apart without a lot of thought.
A political correspondent summed it up very well for me this morning on The Today Show when he likened this week’s events to a jail riot, and trying to sort out the “good guys” … I think this is sad.
You’re correct Jess, this is messy and needs to be sorted out. I am just a little disillusioned … I thought it was sorted out in 2007. We made the effort too.. we walked in to a church hall (or school hall) and we cast our vote. I personally voted for the opposition, however, the majority wanted Kevin 07. But that is not who they ended up with. I too, like the majority of the people are fed up with the school yard bitching and lunch box pilfering that goes on in Canberra.

Jess, I applaud you for standing up on this issue under your family name.

You know what I want Australians to do before they start tweeting, emailing and shouting about politics?

    Research.

And I don’t mean listening to talkback radio or reading crazy opinion columns. I mean actual reading and study of the issues. A considered appraisal of the evidence. A willingness to accept the advice of experts and academics without dismissing it as “elitist” intellectualism. Then we might move away from the hysteria that has come to characterize politics.

And this applies to our politicians too. Move away from the 24 hour media cycle, start going with evidence based policy and actually thinking about the public good.

Is that too much to ask? Oh wait, never mind. Let’s talk about Julia’s suits and Kevin’s haircut instead.

Jess, you’re right. In order to get the government we want and deserve, we need to vote it in. And further to that, we need to tell them what we want and need. We need to be active in the process of governing, or we lose the right to a representative democracy.

But… Our elected representatives also have a responsibility. They have a responsibility to do their jobs in our best interests, not theirs. And when we have a system that has so many flaws, it’s hard to “simply” vote out the dickheads. It’s harder still to make them listen to your concerns, even when you’re screaming at the top of your lungs.

Reality gives the ideological a good slap in the face quite often when it comes to politics. I admire the rhetoric though :-)

I applaud you, Jess. Your father acted with spirit, honesty, integrity, and humility. I watched his press conference and I was proud. Proud that my former PM and my Foreign Minister acted and spoke in a manner that was succinct, straight talking and to the point. When he speaks, I listen. Mostly because he refuses to use the same mindless, on-topic, Gillard-approved sloganism that Gillard’s cronies trawl out whenever they’re asked a reasonable question. No matter what Gillard et all throw at your Dad, I believe that he will not be drawn into behaving in the same abhorrent manner as his Cabinet and caucus colleagues. I rang his electorate office this morning (I live in Melbourne) and conveyed my support. I also phoned my federal member and all Victorian Senators’ offices to let them know how I hoped they’d vote if a leadership ballot took place on Monday. I hope that no matter what Cabinet members personal views are re: Kevin Rudd, that they will look at the numbers, look at the polls and make the decision that IS best for Australia. Your Dad is the best person to lead Australia, to lead the ALP to the next election and defeat Tony Abbott and the Coalition. I live and watch event unfold with hope, Jess. Travel safe.

OMG, my blood pressure has risen just reading some of the comments posted here. No wonder we as a voting public have this mess as our own legacy. There’s a real lack of critical analysis being shown by some readers of this piece and that’s probably why we as a voting public have been behaving like a bunch of 4 year olds playing soccer; all running towards whatever shiny object all the adults are pointing at – not really knowing what our objective is at all!

JRudd has an opinion- and a pretty balanced one at that given her dad is at the centre of this political storm. I defy others who might be as closely aligned to the situation to be as generous. Just because Jessica has written this piece, more about taking up our democratic rights as far as I can see, doesn’t mean we need to have a piece by anyone else close to any other faction or from the opposition. Jess hasn’t told anyone how to vote, in fact quite the opposite.

For those of you chastising objectivity, have a look at the ways in which we are not so subtly manipulated by various media houses through the choice of pictures used to acompany political stories so we see Gillard as “untrustworthy” or “KRudd” as angry smurf. We suck this up and cry “off with their heads!” which fuels the fire til we suddenly find ourselves in exactly this situation.

Jessica is right. We each need to take some responsibility for our votes and for ensuring that our politicians actually represent the voice of their constituents and are accountable for doing so.

The people who need to look at this with a little more objectivity are the people who are most passionately declaring that this needs to be an objective piece!

I only ask the articles that you publish & the authors who write it (even if it is an opinion piece) be more honest about its purpose.

I *want* to love KatieG’s comment. But I just can’t.

We expect ethics in certain professions such as medicine (i.e. it’s wrong for a practitioner to have sex with a patient).

I would give JRudd’s analysis more weight if she wasn’t writing about her father. It’s like the Rudd family are attempting to take advantage of the Australian voting public, and you’re enabling them to do so.

This piece is unethical at best, Mamamia.

Such coverage brings ‘a warm glow’ to that person’s persona, right? Do we not see this ‘smart’ PR ploy in action all the time?

However, if you’re getting flack I think it’s understandable. People’s feelings do run hot on the leadership issue and by writing an opinion piece at this time you have well and truly put yourself in the firing line.

Honestly, I do not know why people are so upset by this … Jess didn’t say, ‘vote for my dad or I’ll hunt you down and beat you …’ she is simply saying if you want your preferred pm be heard … It’s like the Americans don’t have to vote if they don’t wish too, yet those same people will whine if the president they wanted wasn’t elected …

I am Pro Rudd. I have never liked Julia G. And especially since she used dirty tactics to dispose of Rudd. Maybe Rudd had to go in 2010, but the way it was handled was a disgrace. And yes I am fully aware her advisors told her she was the best person for the job. Still does not excuse the lies about the carbon tax to name just one royal stuff up!

Jess Rudd says “You’re all employers too. You might not be related to your employees, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have access to them.”
In the case of Kevin Rudd, no one has access to him. Our organisation – involved in foreign aid – tried to see him for over a year and he snubbed us, referring us to an “advisor”. In contrast, Julie Bishop made an appointment to see us next time she was in Brisbane. Rudd is based in Brisbane. So Jess – we don’t have access to your dad. He is totally uninterested in anyone except himself and his ego. This article is such blatant propaganda it is embarrassing.

Guess what – it’s for the party to decide not the voters. We don’t vote for a PM. The leader of the party with the most seats in the lower house becomes the PM. Jess knows that very well. In any event, whoever the Australian public ‘wants’ to be PM can’t govern unless they can command the cooperation and respect of their colleagues. Who cares if the public want KRudd if he can’t find a team who will work with him. Governing isn’t a one man show.

I’m over it. Call an election so we can have a government that doesn’t stab it’s own members in the back. I think it’s appalling that the sitting PM can be replaced on the whim of the party (think Paul Keating, Julia Gillard). Either the GG needs to step up to the plate, or someone in the minority government needs to resign to tip the balance of power. Do it now.

We would have to reqrite the Constitution in order to elect a Prime Minister instead of a party.

As much as people don’t like it/understand it, the fact of the matter is that we do not elect leaders, the PM included, and the party is perfectly within their rights to get rid of a leader who is not being effective, as was the case with KRudd.

        Hi Claudia,

If you were to draw conclusions about my politics or personal views about anything solely from the pieces we publish on Mamamia you would be very confused.

We have published posts from the left (Jenny Macklin! Julia Gillard!), the right (Tony Abbott!) and everywhere in between.
And we’ll continue to do so.

This website is not my personal or political mouthpiece.

Yes I AM transparent but not in the way you suggest.

Posts with my name on them are my opinion. The rest are published because we think they are worth sharing with Mamamia’s very intelligent and engaged readers.

This post is an example of the latter.

          Hi Mia

I acknowledge that you post views from the left, the right and everything in between – absolutely, but this is different.

This is different because at this very moment Therese is on my television encouraging me to go out and tell my MP that I want Kevin Rudd back as the Prime Minister. Kevin is rallying the troops and, to me, this is one aspect of that.

You have a lot of influence, particularly with young women, and at the very least the timing of this is *very* convenient given the all-out PR campaign by the Rudd’s, surely you see that your readers could interpret it so?

        • Mia, I don’t doubt your sincerity for a moment, but it can look different from the outside looking in…that’s not a criticism…just an observation.

I think some of us, like Claudia and Karen (and certainly me on some recent posts) are just trying to let you know what MM is looking like as readers…

I agree – you do post different viewpoints…but as readers, we are aware that you are mates with some of the commentators on MM…that doesn’t mean bias…and there’s nothing wrong with publishing comment written by people who you are friends with…but don’t be surprised when people see bias (even if none exists)…

I don’t know how you can avoid this though…like I said, we’re just providing feedback.

What’s disappointed me about this article is the dismissiveness from Mamamia in response to what is well-intended, and I think valid, feedback from a significant portion of its readership.

Mamamia, I think you’d be well served to listen to and carefully consider this feedback, rather than immediately dismiss and in some instances patronise your readers.

Again, I love the site, and many times I think you’ve done a fantastic job of listening to and evolving off the back of feedback from your readers. Unfortunately, so far, this has not been one of those instances.

This might be slightly off topic, but I want to say something about “loyalty” in politics. I watched the fabulous Annabel Crabbe’s new show Kitchen Cabinet last night, in which she was hosted by the fabulous Amanda Vanstone and the very-less-fabulous Christopher Pyne. At one point Pyne was carrying on about how he didn’t like Julia Gillard because of the way she treats her mates. She lacks loyalty, he said, and cited Kim Carr as case in point. (I know there was some kerfuffle last year about Carr – I can’t remember much about it although I’m sure it was fascinating at the time.)

One thing I would like to say to politicians is: this personal loyalty thing is bullshit. I’m a public servant. If I made professional decisions on the basis of personal loyalty, I would be sacked. And rightly so. Why is it a virtue for elected officials? You’re running the country, not picking teams for a game of tag in the schoolyard.

This morning Gillard said if she lost she would retire to the backbench and relinquish any future leadership ambitions. She challenged Rudd to commit to the same. I think that’s pretty good, but I know what would be better: if they each committed to remaining in Cabinet, keeping the best talent there, and supporting the leader.

I think Rudd had some great ideas and vision. I also happen to think Gillard has been better at executing them. Imagine if they could actually work together?

      Good point.

It seems, though, that Gillard DID attempt to work with him (Foreign Minister!) but that he kept stoking the fire behind the scenes. And I say “seems” because who bloody knows after all this malarky. But I can’t think for a minute why JG and her supporters would have been the ones pushing this issue into the papers every day. What’s in it for them?

I’d love it if they could work together but it SEEMS to me like one of them refuses to let sleeping dogs lie.

Yes, I agree with that. My last comment sounds more generalised/idealistic than I really intended it to. The usual jumble of disconnected thoughts in my head.

To be honest, I’m not quite sure what Rudd is aiming to achieve by all this. He’ll either lose, or he’ll win. If he wins, he takes the government into pretty scary territory (with a very thin front bench, by the sound of it). The only cross-bencher that I’ve heard sound mildly supportive is Wilkie, and this morning I read that Rudd has told Clubs Australia that he’ll “tear up pokie reform” if he wins! Um……

You need some degree of loyalty and camaraderie to function as a team. Sure, if someone is clearly incompetent or dishonest or dysfunctional you have to try your best to address that and if that fails then perhaps the person should be replaced. But if people are eliminated from the team without being given a chance to receive feedback, to change, and to express their own viewpoint, it isn’t a way to run any team let alone a Government. It’s not ideal for our ministers to be knifing each other and undermining each other – that’s no way to run a team! It should be based on long term trust, which isn’t built through promising team members that they’re goners as soon as someone more popular comes along.

      GD Star Rating

      • bowerbird

I wonder if we’re talking about different forms of loyalty? Giving someone constructing feedback and a chance to improve isn’t individual loyalty. That’s basic fairness, and should be available to everyone regardless of whether they’re your ‘mate’ or not. (And it seems to me that Rudd was given both feedback and options for change before he was removed as leader.)

The sort of “loyalty” that I’m critical of is that to certain individuals *within* a team. The sort that makes cabinet postings a convoluted system of payback/reward, rather than being based on competence and capability. I’d argue its this very kind of loyalty that undermines trust and fosters all the infighting and backstabbing.

Pyne was saying what he believes resonates with the electorate – “Julia is disloyal, can’t be trusted, [breaks promises].”

In no way shape or form was that an off-the-cuff remark, he was just using an “apolitical” setting to slip a stock line around the defences. Nicely done, I guess.
