Do You Like This Story?

Can you imagine Tim Matheison being asked to kick off Julia Gillard’s next election campaign? Can you picture Margie Abbott taking the stage to tumultuous applause to tell everyone why Tony Abbott was the right man to lead the country? Yeah…. Notsomuch.

But in the United States of America that is just how it goes. Being the spouse of a presidential candidate is not just a full time job – it comes with an obsessive fan-following and a level of public scrutiny that only Lady Gaga could sympathise with

Earlier today, First Lady Michelle Obama opened the Democratic National Convention to tell Americans why they should vote her husband, Barack Obama, into a second term of office.

Here’s what she had to say:

Now obviously there are a lot of take away messages from this speech – but for a moment let’s skip over the policy debates, the political issues and the reflections on Obama’s first term – and let’s talk about love.

There is so clearly a whole heap of love going on in the Obama White House.

Between Michelle and Barack. Between the couple and their children. Between the family and their country.

It’s not soppy sickly love and it’s not hand-on-your-heart patriotism either. This is a family who are living their lives 100% in the public eye but yet they’re sticking together. If anything, their closeness seems to have strengthened and not weakened over the past four years.

Here are some of our favourite lines from the self-described “Mum in chief’s” speech today:

On her husband Barack:

“I have seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change who you are — no, it reveals who you are.” SWOON. (She didn’t say the ‘swoon’, we added that in.)

“I didn’t think it was possible, but today, I love my husband even more than I did four years ago. Even more than I did 23 years ago, when we first met.”

On their childhoods:

“Barack and I were both raised by families who didn’t have much in the way of money or material possessions but who had given us something far more valuable — their unconditional love, their unflinching sacrifice, and the chance to go places they had never imagined for themselves.”

Oh Barack and women:

“He believes that women are more than capable of making our own choices about our bodies and our health care. That’s what my husband stands for.”

On keeping her children grounded in the spotlight:

“I have none of those worries, no, from four years ago about whether Barack and I were doing what’s best for our girls. Because today, I know from experience that if I truly want to leave a better world for my daughters, and all our sons and daughters … then we must work like never before, and we must once again … stand together for the man we can trust to keep moving this great country forward, my husband, our president.”

And where was the President of the United States while all of this was happening?

Here. On the couch with his daughters Mahia and Sasha watching their mum on TV. Awesome.

72094366 THIS is the speech the world is buzzing about

President Barack Obama and his daughters, Malia, left, and Sasha,

I’m not surprised that so many Americans are too disenchanted and/or lethargic to vote……..their voting process is never straight forward enough for “regular folk”.
In any case, would Mitt Romney be any better at fixing problems than the President ?
The US is HUGE……the problems are HUGE and were never going to be fixed in one term.
Michelle Obama’s speech was a little “overworked” but I like her because she’s awake, and may even be the stuff that a first black female president is made of………I like to imagine the sexist, bigoted fury THAT would cause world-wide….. we’d really see people’s true natures then……lol.

Some feedback on the new moderation implement. I’ve attempted to edit my most recent response to Sally twice and as a result, has been marked as spam.

I’m usually editing to fix up a bad tone, spelling mistake or other mistake, not to spam.

It was a good speech and she seems like a nice enough woman. Obviously very smart and accomplished in her own right etc etc.

But come on – she is on that stage simply because of who her husband is. Can we save the praise for women who are cutting it on their own terms as politicians and leaders? I refuse to worship a woman – any woman – because she is a US first lady. I’m saving that for their first female president.

    • Michelle Obama was a more successful, higher achieving, better paid lawyer than Barack was for their entire careers post university.

As in, she earned more than double what he earned and held way more prestigious and high ranking positions.

She sacrificed the lot for him to campaign for President. Just like Hillary Clinton sacrificed her legal career for Bill’s political career.

Barack would not have gotten where he is without her, so one could argue that Barack’s only in office because of all of the sacrifices she made for him. She deserves to be there!

Hi Whippersnapper, you miss my point – I never suggested she didn’t deserve to be there. And I DID acknowledge her professional accomplishments in her own right. But my point is that is not why she is being celebrated at the Democratic Convention or by some readers here – she is there because she is the first lady, pure and simple.

Again, good luck to her. She’s a very smart capable woman and I do not begrudge her the life she has chosen for herself in any way. What I am saying though is that I prefer to reserve my praise and compliments for women who decide to make a name of their own in politics, and are not content with being a political spouse.

Oh and just finally, Hillary Clinton never sacrificed any of her professional success for Bill’s sake. That’s why she is now secretary of state. Now there’s a woman I will happily lavish with praise!

I’m with Sally. Michelle Obama is an amazingly accomplished woman and I admire her greatly but she’s not a politician nor is she the president. Nobody voted her in.

Also don’t forget, she’d probably have the same influence, power and attention as a First Lady whether she was a Lawyer or a Cheerleader in a previous career.

I find the obsession with politician’s wives in the US quite bizarre.

        • Disagree – Hillary had to leave a successful equity partnership in a law firm so she could campaign for Bill.

Maybe her ambitions were to be political herself at some stage in the future, which she is obviously doing now, but she definitely had to leave behind a lucrative role for his political ambitions.

Also – I definitely recall plenty of love for Hillary when she was “just” first lady without her own political accomplishments.

Her accomplishments pre Bill’s presidency were pretty similar to Michelle Obama’s. Hillary has now gone on to becoming political in her own right, but there was definitely lots of “Oh we love Hillary! She’s so rad” when she was first lady – very similar to how people are heaping praise on Michelle Obama.

          • Sally

Sorry but that’s absolutely not true. You’ll find Hillary was in fact seen as a very polarising first lady when Bill was first elected. As an openly ambitious woman who campaigned with her husband under the banner “two for the price of one” she made it clear from the outset that she was not going to be a traditional first lady. And she copped a lot of flak for it!

So there was a huge backlash at the time against Hillary – which is exactly why during Barack’s campaign in 2008 Michelle was so keen to stress she would not be pursuing a hands on role in policy formation in the way Hillary had and had no political ambitions of her own.

Yes she is smart and once worked as a successful lawyer but that’s where the similarities to Hillary end. She has followed a far far more old-fashioned notion of political spouse than Hillary ever did and to compare their approach is incorrect at all levels.

There are some comments below about the relationship between Michelle and Barack Obama and rumours that whisper that things might not be going so well for them in private.

Now, I could just be a conspiracy theorist, but I think the timing of these rumours is telling. If you have lurked around various American political blogs as I have you will know that there are a lot of people that admire the relationship between the President and the First Lady. People often comment that they seem to have a very loving and equal partnership. Michelle Obama is very well liked. I would say that the Obama’s marriage is a political strength.

Now, as an election looms, there are rumours starting to circulate that maybe their marriage isn’t as happy as it seems and that Michelle Obama can be jealous and doesn’t like Oprah. I suspect that these rumours are being deliberately spread to try and undermine the influence of the First Lady and to try and quell the admiration for the Obama’s as a couple. As I said, for the first black President of the United States to have such a dignified, articulate and intelligent wife and a strong, loving marriage is great for his image and it makes sense that their opponents would seek to undermine it.

Michelle seems like a great woman who has handed a very pressured situation with grace and intelligence.

But I, for one, think that she should have as much involvement in US affairs of state that you guys seem to think Tim & Margie should have in Australian affairs of state.

She’s unelected, all she does is share her house with someone who has the democratic mandate. I don’t understand why Americans give spouses to elected officials so much voice.

Get elected or run for election, then speechify and I’ll listen.

I think the spouses of Presidential candidates in the US have a much different role to what we have here in Australia. They are usually active in the campaigning and are much more politically involved right from the beginning. They are almost part of the Presidential package and once their husbands have been elected First Ladies do serve in a much more official capacity than what we have in Australia. It’s not like they just suddenly pipe up after the election and do a Kanye “Imma let you finish…” and take over. The role of a First Lady (or maybe one day First Husband?) is a lot more official and has a lot more meaning to Americans than it does to Australians. Although, as you say, Michelle Obama is technically unelected, I don’t think that is true in practice as they are treated as almost a package.

It’s hard to argue against a Kanye reference.

I take your points and that’s ok as long as they’re just part of the campaigning. If the First Lady’s power became more than titular (for once, this is not a boob joke), then I’d be discomfited if I were someone who had a voting franchise in that democracy.

She also has access to some of the world’s (and I mean the world’s – not just the Western World’s) most literate, articulate and numerate speech writers and image makers. The message that I took away from what she said, apart from hard work being the foundation and making of decent and good human beings, is that people like Tim Mathieson and Margie Abbott (and their spouses for that matter) can make a difference to the world in which they live. All they need is the will to – and I think that’s sadly missing in Australian politics today. That married with the dirth of good speech writers and decent image creators means we have a bland, beige media and political environment.

I watched part of the speech this morning and while I do like Michelle a lot, what irks me as an Australian, currently living in the US, is the constant need to say ‘We live in the greatest nation on the earth’. Not only is it arrogant, but it’s also untrue. In the short time we’ve been here we’ve seen people living in ways that must barely be above 3rd world. While I’m not saying the democrats are responsible for this (or the Republicans) as I don’t know enough about US politics, I will say, someone needs to do a lot of work to improve the standard of living here. I for one, cannot wait to get home to Australia.

I agree Belinda – I lived in the US for two years and couldn’t believe the contrast in standard of living. I had to have an emergency surgery while I was there too, luckily I had student insurance, otherwise I would have been out of pocket $12,000 USD (which at the time was about 20K AUD) – as it was I still had to pay several thousand even with insurance. That procedure would have been free here.
Quality of many things is low – especially food in a lot of areas. I was with you – I couldn’t wait to get home.
The thing I do admire is the statesmen/women likeness of top politicians like Obama – we have nothing comparable in Australia, no one talking about morals and helping others get to where you got, no one reminding the public that we all participate in eachother’s successes. That makes me sad.

Where to start? The current situation in the US is a hefty subject. I will first say that Michelle Obama seems so intelligent, engaging and dignified.

I think it can be hard for Australians to grasp what an utter mess the US healthcare system is. Healthcare is reliant on insurance and insurance is provided by the employer. If a person is unemployed I believe they can still aquire insurance but how do you pay for it without a job? If you change jobs and your new workplace uses a different insurer you have to change insurance. This can be problematic when there are waiting periods before you are covered for certain illnesses. If you fall ill and have insurance you can still find out that you aren’t covered. There are a range loopholes which allow the insurance companies to not cover you. If you are unlucky enough not be insured you have to pay BIG TIME. US medical bills can run into the hundreds of thousands. Unlucky enough to develop cancer without insurance? You have the wonderful choice between selling your house to pay the medical bills and being a homeless cancer sufferer or forgoing treatment and possibly dying. It is a system where the care of patients is routinely compromised because of fighting about who is going to pay the bill. Obama wants to change the US system so people recieve medical attention when they need it and don’t go broke in the process. The Republicans on the other hand staunchly oppose it and don’t see why they should have to pay for the healthcare of others. Common human decency perhaps?

Then there is the economy. It would seem the Republican party’s answer to rebuilding the economy is to deregulate everything. The hands-off approach if you will. They want to cut welfare programs that help the poorest people in the nation eat, to cut taxes to the rich (or the job creators as they call them) and the economy will fix itself. Considering the lack of regulation in the financial sector was a major contributor to the GFC that seems like a great idea. Just deregulate everything and let the free market fix itself. There is a great volume of literature as to why that isn’t wise.

So Republicans are all about freedom. FREEDOM! Except if you have a uterus! Then they want to get all up in your business.

Yep, their healthcare system makes me feel such despair for sick people over there.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and speak to a lot of American women who have the same. Lots of them are in too much pain to be able to hold down a job, so they have no insurance, so they can’t see healthcare providers or pay for medication, so they get worse. Vicious, vicious cycle for them. I have never been so grateful for our healthcare system over here since I was diagnosed. I’ve spoken to American women who have waited years to get an appointment to see a rheumatologist, and in that time they’ve had to rely on pain killers just to function. I was diagnosed and put on immuno suppressors within six weeks of first having symptoms.

And don’t get me started on the state of their maternity system over there. They come 42nd in the world when it comes to infant mortality rates. That is, there are 41 countries around the world that are better at keeping babies alive during pregnancy and childbirth than the US.

Greatest country in the world? Come talk to me when you can keep more babies alive than, say, Cuba.

      Hey Neeks,
Thanks for explaining the US Healthcare stuff- this is the first explanation I’ve actually understood.

I’d hate to have to live with that system.

Comparing how the systems work with Americans a while back – top hospital and extras for my health fund was about $400 a month for a family. Theirs, built in to their salary? $1700 per MONTH! And this particular chick would like to go part time, but can’t as she’d lose her health insurance.
Then they get told that under a “socialist” system (ie ours) they would have to wait MONTHS for stuff like xrays. I don’t think they believed me when I explained how our system actually works. So they’re basically overcharged and overinsured, and it’s a big vicious circle, where those who need medical care can’t get it because of exorbitant costs.
Similar to zepgirl, I have just had an acquaintance post that her mother in law had breast cancer years ago, which was sorted, but she’d been told she’d need a different scan, which they insurance wouldn’t cover. She finally managed to pay for it herself, and it turns out she has bone cancer and has been started on an aggressive course of radiation and chemo very soon. Every time I talk to them about their system, I thank my lucky stars I’m here, where everyone can get looked after when they need it.

Even if you can’t pay for private health insurance, you’ll still get treated under the public system.
The fact that health insurance companies can dictate where and what treatment you’ll get is enough to do your head in too.
The socialist medicine also does my head in. Hasn’t anyone realised that public education and housing (or rent controlled housing) is also a socialist ideal?

Brilliant comment. Yep, now the Republicans want to outlaw abortion altogether…that is their national policy now. There is no amendment in place (despite John McCain’s efforts) to make exceptions for rape and incest. Oh, and they also thought of a piece of legislation that would force – yes, force – women who wish to have an abortion to watch their ultra sound. And if they refuse to look at the screen, well they have to come back and look at the screen next time.

Another thing is guns. When people are shot in Australia, do you ever see the response: “Well, if more people were armed in the area, less people would’ve been killed cause they would’ve shot the killer.” Here, after the Aurora shooting, that was quite a common response on sites like CNN. Our mentality is just so different to America (or I should say some Americans) sometimes. John Howard addressed it in a really great piece for the SMH.

It is amazing the way your culture can shape your logic isn’t it?

    Teleprompter reader folks.
Also well known to have a very strained private relationship with Barack. Dont believe the Hype. Try not to be dazzled. It is afterall the biggest showcase extravaganza on the planet. Michelle has failed dismally in her role as First Lady to stem the saddening plight of african american communities across America.
Michelle has also chosen to spend xmas in Hawaii with the children, rather than at the White House, which means she denies the majority of her personal staff & security detail to remain in Washington & spend xmas time with their families.
Does anyone recall the hysteria thrust towards Sarah Palin when it was revealed that her wardrobe cost 150k? Michelle has spent over 1million each yr on only the finest of Haute couture whilst undertaking frequent trips to the fashion runways of the world. Ladies pls…

Benjamin A. Some really strange stuff came out recently about Michelle Obama’s treatment of Oprah who was a big supporter and fan of the President. Mrs Obama apparently has a very strong jealous streak and treated Oprah shamefully because she thought her husband was paying Oprah too much attention. All is not rosy behind the scenes in Washington but I do think Michelle Obama is more popular than her husband (which must be a worry for him).

Honestly can’t say that I think that Michelle Obama is the superstar that some insinuate that she is. She comes across as just a little too Hollywood and insincere for my liking.

Mind you, I can’t recall a US First Lady other than Jackie or Barbara Bush who hasn’t come across as too Hollywood and insincere. Jackie was pure class and Barbara was so maternal. Two traits that you really cannot fake.

I’ll go further and say that I’ve found most American political wives more polished than their husbands. Hair so perfect and teeth so blindingly white ! I appreciate the fact that the spouses of our homegrown lot seem much more real and not plastic copies of Stepford wives.

for the sake of arguement lets just say it was Bush’s fault. Bush fan’s will argue it was Clinton’s fault etc. So lets stick to the facts ok. Bush departed office with an 800 Billion dollar handshake to the banks which got this financial ball rolling. Then Obama promised Hope & Change if only you could Believe! Believe they did. Although they couldnt believe he meant giving 23.7 TRILLION dollars to the banks… History’s funny hey???

Hate to disagree with you guys. Yes…I really hate to disagree, but whatever the outcome of the US election you will be witnessing democracy in action.

The people will have their say in who leads their country. For whatever reasons, it is the people who cast their ballot for the candidate they feel will handle the job better.

The individual is not voting a particular way because of what you or I might think.

Some may moan and groan and whinge and complain about the result because it doesn’t suit their mindset. But hey….democracy allows you the opportunity and freedom to moan, groan, whinge and complain about the result.

So yes, regardless of the result it will be nothing but pure 100% good old fashioned democracy in action. If you really want to be assured of the outcome before the last ballot is counted….Cuba is looking mighty nice this year.

May I respectfully point out that some American states are doing their best to make sure that some people have more democracy than others. The call for all voters to show photo I.D. in some states is disenfranchising the poor and minorities (i.e. those most likely to be Obama voters). There was an attempt in one state to open the polls for less time in Democrat voting areas (this was abandoned) than in Republican voting areas.
I know I get most of my USA political knowledge from Stewart/Colbert and the Huffington Post, but Mitt Romney scares me!

On the same note, I would never recommend watching Fox News if you were hoping to hear something positive about Obama.
