laramichael 300x186 Is Lara Bingle Australia’s version of Paris Hilton? Or a feminist warrior? (see more of Lara Bingle here)

Dave Hughes made the Paris Hilton comparison on Twitter last week while Lara’s agent Max Markson alluded to the former on the Today show. It’s certainly seems to be what everyone is talking about. This story is not going away any time soon and so we may as well jump into it together. Goggles anyone?

In case the words Lara Bingle’s Boobies don’t mean anything to you, here is some essential reading. It comes from ABC online so it must be of national importance…..

brendan 201x300 Is Lara Bingle Australia’s version of Paris Hilton? Or a feminist warrior?Lara Bingle is reportedly suing AFL footballer Brendan Fevola following the release of a nude photo.

The photo, allegedly taken while the pair were involved in a secret affair in 2006, was published in Woman’s Day on Monday. It shows Bingle taking a shower, trying to cover herself with her right hand.

Bingle’s manager Max Markson has told the Herald Sun that his client met with lawyers yesterday and has decided to sue Fevola. “Lara Bingle is taking legal action against Brendan Fevola for breach of privacy, defamation and misuse of her image,” Markson told the newspaper.

Fevola was dumped by Carlton after he became drunk and disgraced himself at the Brownlow Medal ceremony last year. He was traded to the Brisbane Lions. Nude photos of Bingle, now engaged to Australian cricket vice-captain Michael Clarke, appeared several years ago on the German website for GQ magazine.

Okaaaaay. Let’s unpack this one. I was on Kerri-Anne Kennerly’s first show back for 2010 yesterday to discuss this very issue because that’s the type of news I like to discuss before breakfast. News with nipples.

When KAK asked me if these photos could harm Lara’s career, I had to pause because well, Lara doesn’t have a career right now. Not to say she won’t in the future. In all seriousness, maybe one day she might decide on a career in politics in which case this photo could be a major bummer.

In actual seriousness, I don’t want this post to turn into a bitch-fest about Lara. Please save your breath on those kinds of nasty comments because I’ll delete them. It’s very possible to discuss this issue without slagging someone off personally. I promise you it is.

lara5 200x300 Is Lara Bingle Australia’s version of Paris Hilton? Or a feminist warrior?I’ve met Lara a couple of times. She is a nice, harmless girl. Enormously pretty and sunshiny.

Here’s a reminder of how good she looks in photos taken with her consent.

I was actually working at Channel 9 when the initial story about Lara and Brendan Fevola broke. At the time, Lara had just won Dancing On Ice (or whatever it was called) and had been signed – along with Jennifer Hawkins’ boyfriend Jake Wall (was he the runner up? the whole period is a blank in my mind…) to a one-year talent contract.

During this time, the network tried to find someone suitable for them to do. Nothing worked out and their contracts weren’t renewed. Anyway.

I recall the whole Bingle Fevola thing very well because at one point, someone decided it would be a great thing to get Lara on A Current Affair discussing her alleged affair with Brendan Fevola and because I knew her agent from my time in magazines, it was suggested I try to tee it up.

The day a 19 year old model’s supposed affair with a footballer I’d never heard of became my problem? That was a dark day. One of many during my specatular (not) stint as a TV exec.

Moving right along. So now Lara has had a shot leaked of her in the shower. A shot that – if you’ve seen it (I’m not publishing it here but you can Google it if you must) was CLEARLY taken without her permission and against her will.

Her face is scrunched into an anguished expression and her mouth seems to be in the middle of saying “Fuck off”. I don’t blame her.

A couple of things to mention. While I did blanche a little at Max Markson’s assertion that Lara is striking a blow for The Sisters by suing Fevola for taking and distributing the photo via text to his footy mates (really?), I do see her as the victim here.

The fact the photo was taken during an affair with a married man?

I think that’s a separate issue. They were both consenting adults in whatever form their relationship took.

The fact that Lara has posed for nude shots before for German GQ magazine?

Irrelevant. That’s like saying rape can’t occur within marriage. She chose to pose nude on her terms, in a particular context, under conditions within her control. She’s a model. That is her right.

There’s a warning to be heeded here for all women – and men I guess. Taking sexually compromising photos and videos is not new. Just ask Paris Hilton. But what IS different to years ago is that now everyone is walking around with a camera and video recorder in their hand 24/7.

We need to remember – and to teach our daughters and remind our girlfriends – that safe sex is no longer just about condoms. It’s also about making sure you’re not filmed or photographed without your consent.

One other thing to remember? Today’s lover will probably be tomorrow’s ex. And if he’s in any way pissed off? You don’t want images of you naked to be anywhere other than in his memory.

Have you ever taken photos of yourself or had them taken of you that you regret? Is Lara right to sue Brendan Fevola?

UPDATE: By popular demand, a Lara Bingle frockwatch has just gone up here.

I, in no way believe it is acceptable for an image to be taken or published without consent. It is a violation of privacy and shouldn’t have happened. I do however, believe in Karma. You can’t have an affair with a married man and expect there to be no repurcussions. Lara made some bad decisions, and they came back to bite her. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. It’s how the universe works. I believe Lara knew well and good that Fevola was married.. why else would it have been a “secret affair?” And if she did know that he was married, then what made her think she could trust him?

Does anyone else see it as a coincidence that she signs with Max Markson, and a few days later this photo was released? It’s a very clever PR move, ensuing her a whole swagger of free publicity and magazine interviews on “her side of the story” for several hundred thousand dollars. To make it seem like they haven’t done this he has said that she will be suing Fevola. Think about it, it’s quite genius in a twisted sort of way.
I don’t believe she is a victim, sorry, but I don’t. She is a girl with an unscrupoulous manager who will do anything for fame. Full stop.

Neither. She is coming off a little silly and a bit “shire bogan” (I think is the Sydney term?) with the money for interviews crap that now includes her family. She is no Paris Hilton though. Clarke has kept his mouth shut which is a better look I reckon. This is no sexist thing either – I am sympathetic re- unauthorized pics and I now think Fevola is a tool. I don’t care how drunk he gets on TV but cheaters are losers. That goes for her too – I knew at the age of 10 that cheating is just not on and I have resisted the temptation several times. I am not one of the beautiful people though (Except at night or in times of crisis when I become Domestos, vanquisher of the evil and ravisher of the grateful) so I accept that I might have hard decisions to make if hot, loose-brained hotties were chasing me all day! Who knows, maybe it happened when they were super hammered and she broke it off out of extreme guilt? We will never know.
Some more attractive people I have known do get a bit full of themselves and think that the rules don’t apply to them. Bonking married people would qualify for this, as would ingoring what I would consider a reasonable request from a fiance to not do a certain interview. To be married both people have to submit to each other in some ways and I would not consider him saying that to be overly controlling. Clarke could be a tool too in ways we don’t know but so far he appears to have conducted himself well. I don’t mind people making money as a model etc but it does not have the authenticity of taking some innate ability and honing it into a real talent as Clarke has done. Were the sexes reversed I would feel the same – maybe more so.
… and to the second question, no she is no feminist warrior. I think of feminists as being sometimes a little militant and maybe a little too hard core but generally as dignified, principled people. I quite like Germaine Greer’s intellect although she sprouts a bit of crap too. Bingle comes across as unprincipled and undignified.

I want to know how Woman’s Day got their hands on the photo in the first place – that’s the question the media should be asking! Only then can anyone really comment about this grubby little story. And with regard to Lara being Australia’s version of Paris, not likely. Paris never bites the hand that feeds her.

There is something truly sick about the publication of a photo like this. I love celebrity goss and the odd papparazzi (I can never spell that word with any confidence) shot, but that is not what this is. It is so clearly against her will in every way shape and form.

This is a 19 year old girl for God’s sake! If it had been taken a year earlier it would constitute child pornography. It made my blood boil when I happened to hear an elderly lady on talk back radio saying that it was Lara’s fault for having a shower. Um, ok….

Regardless of who is or is not to blame in the whole break-up fiasco, the Australian media should just get over it. She is a pretty young girl and Michael Clarke is just a guy who happens to connect a willow bat with a leather ball really really well – it is not worth destroying lives over!

What is wrong with this country? I know that we love a juicy slice of celeb gossip (just another step in society’s desire for fame and fortune) but I am appauled that this story has exploded into the media circus that it is and has taken precident over every other headline. Is it too much to ask that we reserve such drama for Hollywood?
I pose the question- Would we really care if our precious cricket captain wasn’t involved? He’s called off the engagement and is returning to New Zealand, so it’s time for the news media to back off and leave the trashy gossip for the magazines.
I don’t think that being 19 and innocent is an excuse that can be used in Bingle’s defence. We all have a conscience and shagging a married man with kiddies isn’t an award winning decision. What goes around comes back around.
Oh and a hot tip – Giving the press ‘the finger’ only bolsters your already tarnished image.

We simply don’t know enough about the circumstances of the Fevola photo to judge if suing him is right or wrong. If it ever gets to a court of law, that would change but I agree with the others that the heat is all on Lara, when we should be asking tough questions to Fevola. The Bingle/Clarke thing is big news because they have so willingly placed themselves in the media throughout their courtship. Media attention is not something you can switch on and off at will.

How about Fevola’s wife – Lara Bingle betrayed all women when she had sex with another women’s husband. We know 99% of males will sleep with almost anything if it is on offer…it is up to women to take the moral high ground here – and take back our power by placing a high value on sex.

OK so it is not a great idea to sleep with a married or attached man. BUT he is the one with the commitment, i am not a fan of this whole story or of Ms Bingle. However why do women have to take the ‘high moral ground’. Why is is our responsibility to make men behave correctly are we their mothers??? It is frustrating to me as i have spent many years being lied to by men and got called all manner of names because i chose to feel good about myself and NOT sleep with someone else’s partner. Well at least i didn’t know if i did………..i know that in this case the story has come out that Lara did know he was married. My point is the last time you met someone you liked did you ask them if they were married within the first 10 mins. Well i have because i had gotten so paranoid about being the “other” woman. I guess what i’m, saying is that my dating life is in the toilet because i am expected to be the moral compass for every man i meet. An element of truth but any broad generalisation like that can never be correct. Many of us use the front of our brain more than what is attached to the back of it! And while I do wish to bonk much of what moves, I chose not to out of respect to those I care about. Many women never attract or engender trust in the right men. Don’t forget that many women are in the grip of a mindless (instinctive) “keep them at all costs” mentality too. Even after they have used very superficial means to attract them! We all suck, basically.

Yep, John the respect bit – that the socialisation part. I am not generalising at all. Please understand I am not saying that all men always bonk everything that moves – just that genetically they are programmed to want to bonk as many women as they possibly can. This is not a judgment upon men. However, if women understood this, that men and women DO have different responses and needs around sex, they may be a bit more thoughtful about their choices

I don’t understand the media hype surrounding this drama. There are so many worthy causes out there that would hugely benefit from one article space that has been given to the Bingle/Clarke/Fevola fiasco. I can’t believe that even The Australian now has them as front page news. The media need to gain some perspective and realise that there are much more important causes out there that deserve media attention. The media obviously have lots of power over the public, so why don’t they use it to publicise issues like malnutrition and Fistula Foundation (http://www.fistulafoundation.org)? We have heard enough about this (Bingle). Now it’s time to move on and focus on what’s important.

Oh you make me laugh honey (trust me id use a better name but it’d probably be censored).

It’s not about the vilification of women, women are just fine by me but they should be held accountable to the same standards men are. You want to villify a guy for cheating on his wife, sure, that is not a good decision. She also slept with him, knowing full well (it’s not like he’s some random off the street) that he is married. That is also a bad decision.

Get off your hobby horse and take a look at the full picture, it was a whole bunch of bad decisions by the people involved and to be honest who cares it should be a private matter.

As for your first point, of course she can tell her story, she has obviously decided against it, unless there is some sort of male conspiracy to keep her from doing so that exists solely in your head?

Jaz. I to agree women should be held accountable to the same standards as men! I absolutely 100% agree this should be the case. My point is that I don’t believe this is the case here, I do believe Lara has been critisied more heavily in the media and through public opinion then Fevola, and i believe this is because she is a woman!

Lara has been severely criticised for telling her side of the story to Woman’s Day. So do not know what you are talking about in terms of male conspiracy…

Also, when you degrade people by talking down to them, like calling people “Honey”, or some other name you would prefer if only it was not likely to be censored, it makes you seem unintelligent, like you can’t effectively communicate your thoughts without being rude to people.

Dermott Brereton has just come out tonight to say that he told Lara that Fervola was married when they first met – he had noticed them texting each other and apparently pulled her aside. I agree – she is gorgeous to look at. I do feel sorry for her, she must be really upset at the moment and her life must feel chaotic and out of her control. However, I must admit that her own actions – albeit as a 19 year old – have consequences. I think this is karma. Even IF she did not “know” he was married at the time, there was no doubt she did after she left that answer phone message (played to media by wife) that pleads for him to not get back with wife and stay with her. She also hooked up with Micheal as he simultaneously asked his long term partner to leave. I don’t feel she “deserves” any of the media and humiliation, but I do think that the universe is reflecting her own actions. I am a mother of 3 small children, my sexyness level plummeted as I concentrated on my babies, and as much as I trust my husband, I wouldn’t like any Lara’s batting their eyelashes at him!!

Lara Bingle needs to do two things right now!

    1. she needs to keep quiet and disappear for a while
    2. she needs to dump Max Markson. Fast!

The whole situation is simply getting beyond ridiculous. And those to blame are the bloody media. What vultures!

This was the top news story on Channel 7 last night. Really? There was nothing more important happening in the world that could possible take the number one spot for the night?

To see Lara’s mother almost in tears, begging to be let into her apartment over the phone while photographers and cameras were up in her face was absolutely appaling.

This is not freakin’ Hollywood people!

I feel very sad for Lara right now. She is a very young girl in a horrible place in her life. Nobody is perfect. But to turn the TV on thismorning and discover news crews camped outside her home at 7am to get some goss on her possible split with her fiance, well that is a new low. Anyone who has gone through a break-up should have a little more heart for her

Enough already! I think this whole matter has been over publicised. Honestly, aren’t there more serious issues in this world? She was young and stupid (weren’t we all??) and I would imagine her world is in a bit of a mess right now. Leave her alone! I’m over it.

Mia, you’re the first person I’ve heard that has made any sense of this issue! I totally agree that there is no need for any bitchiness in regards to this issue. I can’t believe how many women I have heard and read in the media saying how much they dislike Lara Bingle. They remind me of the bitchy girls in high school. I don’t think she has done anything to deserve all this bitchiness – I wonder what the motivation is behind it.

Lara Bingle claims she didn’t know Brendan Fevola was married. I give her the benefit of the doubt. She is from Sydney and does not follow AFL football so had probably never heard of him before. As Mia mentioned she was only 19 and naive. Think of your 19yo self… She claims as soon as he found out she broke it off. I agree, the whole affair thing is beside the point. Noone should be subjected to a photo in the shower taken without their permission.

I think she may have taken some bad advice from her new manager, Max Markson – he certain;y hasn’t helped the situation.

Naive? Yes. Bad decisions? Yes. Deserving of people, especially women being so mean and judgmental? No.

What would some of your teenage past look like under the microscope?

The big issue here is not who loves / hates Lara Bingle, although this is what our media seems to have turned it into. The issue here is where is the law that protects our privacy from this kind of sexual harassment? This kind of thing should not be allowed to happen.

Why does Lara Bingle get rubbished so much for sleeping with a married man, when she was about 19. She did a stupid thing – yes. But seriously, when will people get over it?

If people want to blame someone, blame the married man who made a commitment to his wife, saying that he would “forsake all others”, infront of his family & friends. He’s the asshole here, not her!

I’m not condoning what she did, however I don’t understand why in 2010, when a man cheats on his wife, we still somehow blame the woman he slept with, not him!

in this modern world of google etc it’s impossible to believe that someone can sleep with a sportstar and then claim you didn’t know he was married (unless they lied about their name and circumstance…but I’m sure Brendan would have been upfront about who HE was)i find it hard to sympathise with any woman who sleeps or flirts with a married man

    Been thinking …….
There are 3 types of women……..

There are the Priness Diana types …. everything is played out in the media. They use and abuse the media (and public) in turn and they play victim and aggressor in turn.

Then there are the Jackie O types …never apologise, never explain. They have a quiet dignity and strength and no matter what you think of them, they don’t need the media or the public to be on side. They are nobody’s victim.

Then there are the Paris Hiltons and Madonnas. They use the media but aint no victims. They may not be classy in the true sense of the word but have a class act.

Lara Bingle aint no class act and she is not what you call dignified.

Like Princess Di, she will become the victim of her own script.

So many bad choices by all involved …. the footballer, the model and the fiance.

The footballer who did the dirty on his wife and distributed the photo. He’s an idiot but hey he was an idiot before and after his bingle with Bingle.

The model who f’cked the married man, (who was and is an idiot) and then sued the idiot. And now she’s an idiot too.

The fiance, who may be a great sportsman but got engaged to an idiot, albeit a pretty idiot (when she’s out of the shower) and now he looks like an idiot too.

No comparison to Paris Hilton. Whatever anyone thinks of Paris Hilton, she’s no idiot!!!

Why oh why is the fact that they were two consenting adults committing adultery a separate issue? It has EVERYTHING to do with the release of the photos. Is consent now a defence to immoral actions? Hitler and Stalin split Poland down the middle – they were just two consenting adults. Does consent make everything okay?

Hi Pete, just a word, that in 2010 ‘No’ means ‘No’, whether this be to sex (rape), or to a nude photograph being taken & illicitly distributed through a whole football team & then internationally. Maybe if you like we could make cyber sexual harassment the official punishment for infidelity in Australia? Looks like many Australians would agree this should be the case, so long as they still get to watch their football! Would this suit your sense of ‘moral’ decency’ better?

Look, I don’t condone for an instant what Brendan Fevola did. It was wrong and I find it disgusting. But you reap what you sow – actions bear consequences. You’d have to be pretty dim-witted to get involved with someone like Fevola in the first place. And when you sell your private life to the media, like many celebrities do, it becomes a public life. You can’t chose to have the good parts of your life public and the bad parts private. It’s one or the other.

Hi Geoff, gee Australia can certainly do with some EDUCATION. I know a lot of women consent to having sex, with all their clothes off infact. So maybe it doesn’t matter whether they consent or not. What’s a little ‘rape’ after all? For your education, consent has everthing to do with it. If someone consents in one circumstance doesn’t mean that it is someone else’s right to act upon them without consent. This is sexual abuse or sexual harassment. Please, do us all a favour & educate yourself.

Call my cynical but this just reeks of ‘I’m bored, unemployed and want attention’. Sack my publicist, hire a notorious one and a week later, a photo (which should NEVER have been taken OR distrubuted, dont get me wrong) that really shows bugger all of her and has been sitting on newspapers desks unpublished for a year suddenly appears in a womens mag. I think she was aware. I think she has been aware the whole time and fed the ‘any publicity is good pubilicity’. But thats just my opinion. I think its boring, she is boring and I dont want to read about it anymore!

Initially I couldn’t help thinking how this story would have played if it was someone like Jane McGrath who’d had a shot like that circulated about her? I bet the media would have sung a very different tune. Because the ‘Lara-hating’ certainly seemed cloud the issue for too many people. There was such an element of ‘she deserved it’, as if that in some way mitigated the act of taking and circulating the photo.

For the record I’m not really a fan of the ‘Enormously pretty and sunshiny’ girl. But until last night I thought she’d been treated pretty shabbily in this incident.

Sadly, the ‘one finger salute’ last night tipped me back into the camp of people who think she’s a spoiled brat, who’s turned this into an opportunity for Lara to be in the spotlight. Don’t complain about the media camping on your doorstep when, in this case, unlike the photo, you invited them.

Whatever opinion we may have about Lara Bingle, the personality or the individual, the issue here is that her rights as a woman were violated, and that is not cool.

She made an error in her judgment, and it’s come back to haunt her, unfortunately, but that could have happened to any one of us (thank God mobile phones didn’t have cameras in them in my day!!! But I digress…).

Chin up, Lara, this too will pass.

Lara Bingle’s right to privacy was nullified the day she aided and abetted adultery. She deserves everything she gets. There are plenty of women to emulate, Julia Gillard for instance, even some in Lara’s line of work like Jen Hawkins. Jen carries herself with grace and dignity. Lara is cheap and tacky.
