UPDATED

Advertisers have started pulling their sponsorship of Alan Jones’ 2GB radio show following the host’s controversial comments about Prime Minister Gillard and the death of he father, John over the weekend.

According to news.com.au, more than 8000 Australians have signed an online petition that calls for calling for advertisers to stop sponsoring the morning radio show (you can sign the petition here.)

Freedom Furniture, Woolworths, Mercedes Benz and Challenger have confirmed they’re pulling their sponsorship and the managing director of air-conditioning company JJ Metro West said it was considering its options.

News Limited reported exclusively yesterday that 2GB radio host and ‘shock jock’ Alan Jones said Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s father, John Gillard – who passed away earlier this month had – ‘died of shame’.

Jones made the comments during a 50-minute speech to group of 100 Young Liberals at a $100-a-head function at Sydney University.

The function reportedly also had auction items available, including a ‘chaff bag jacket signed by Alan Jones’ – in reference to previously offensive comments Jones has made about the Prime Minister.

“The old man recently died a few weeks ago of shame,” Jones told the audience. “To think that he had a daughter who told lies every time she stood for parliament.”

You can listen to the full audio of Alan Jones’ speech here.

Yesterday Alan Jones held an almost hour-long press conference in Sydney today where he (sort of) apologised to Julia Gillard for his comments at a Young Liberal Party function, where he said the Prime Minister’s late father had ‘died of shame’.

Online news website Perth Now reports:

[Alan Jones] said his comments to a Sydney University Liberal Club dinner were unacceptable, and he had contacted the Prime Minister’s office to see if she would accept a personal apology…

Alan Jones”The comments were, in the light of everything, unacceptable,” Alan Jones told a press conference in Sydney today. “They merit an apology by me.”

Jones said he had not considered resigning over the remarks. “The advertisers aren’t queuing up to pull their advertising – that’s up to the station,” he said. He said he had heard the “died of shame” remark at a children’s party, and likened it to “black-humoured comments” made in the trenches of Gallipoli.

“I shouldn’t have repeated the story. I’m old enough and smart enough to know that shouldn’t have happened,” Jones said. “It was a throw-away thing at a private function – I thought it was a private function.”

Jones said he did not know there was a Sunday Telegraph journalist in the audience, or that his comments were being recorded. “I spoke without notes for 58 minutes, I’ve no idea of the material I covered,” he said.

He said that he was sober when he remade the remark. Jones said he did not dislike the Prime Minister, but did dislike her policies.

He said he’d raised money in the past for female candidates and he resented any suggestion he didn’t think women should be involved in public office. Jones added that he had been the target of Twitter trolls, who had said they wished his prostate cancer would return.

Following the speech, the Sydney University Liberals sent out a tweet saying: “Brilliant speech by Alan Jones last night. It’s no wonder he’s the nation’s most influential broadcaster.” The tweet has now been deleted.

Jones’ comments have made national news with shocked political commentators all weighing in on Twitter yesterday.

Alan you say that you like Gillard but not her policies, so when you said she should be put in a chaff bag taken out to sea and thrown overboard it was really her policies and not her that you wanted thrown overboard, Right? unless of course you’d like to put all your friends in chaff bags and throw them overboard, what sort of a nut case would do that to people they like.

Alan Jones is without peer. He is, quite simply, irreplaceable.

You can choose to believe what you’re told and be puppets for the government agenda to remove him, or you can listen to this and decide for yourselves.

I’ve listened to him for many years. He rips the Coalition apart just as readily as he does the government. He was a one man cheer squad for Gillard until she lurched from one catastrophe to the next.

Make no mistake, Gillard, Rudd and the Givernment want him gone. That way they can and will get away with blue murder and we’ll never know.

The glee with which JONES is being inflamed and prodded along is beyond comprehension. It was reported that he apologised, he’s put the apology in writing – that’s it. It’s not reflective of some greater conspiracy – it’s just an off the cuff remark now much regretted. How must poor Mrs Gillard, Mr Gillard’s widow feel about the continuing circus. It’s all so crass. The PM refuses to accept the appolgies. The matter should stop there. (I don’t condone jones words) The press must now concentrate with the same vigour to show exactly how the ALP intends to bring the budget to surplus. And pursue with the same force about the UNs AGENDA 21. onThe Population Control Agenda Behind The Global Warming Movement: Population Reduction- Is The “Cheapest” Way To Reduce Carbon Emissions…report on the facts and tell the truth to Australians. May be McTernon could send a few worms to the UN to secretly record things that are not supposed to be told to the Public. Very few have talked about the absolutely explosive document on birth control. This shocking policy document openly asks how fertility decline in the least developed countries can be “accelerated” as quickly as possible.

This may shock some of you, but we live in a country where people have different opinions. The Liberals and their supporters seem to have absolutely lost their minds if they think this kind of drivel is okay to spout. Regardless of your politics, Alan Jones had absolutely no right to say such things about Julia Gillard and her father. It is disgraceful and if he had one shred of self-respect, never would have said such things in the first place. I really pity Liberal supporters if this is what you representing you.

I’d like to thank Alan Jones for helping to reveal the true nature of so many members of the Liberal party, including their federal leader.

The fact that these young people invited him to speak at their event demonstrates how retrograde their thinking really is. The fact that they laughed and stayed seated for a speech which started so offensively shows a total lack of courage or decency.

Surely any intelligent young person would run a mile from associating themselves with this party.

The fact that thousands of listeners voluntarily listen to his bile and mindlessly repeat his garbage is a reminder that decent people must speak out, to balance the discourse.

Calling for people to be put to death because you disagree with their beliefs/ policies is disgusting no matter who or how it is done- and I’m sure Alan Jones would have been the first to condemn the Muslim ‘activists’. If you want your opinion respected, keep your views relevant, civil and intelligent. Additionally, Alan Jones has no children to inherit the damage to the environment so obviously no real interest in reducing our impact for future generations (re:the carbon tax). Why would any politician introduce a tax so unpopular if they didn’t genuinely believe it was in the best interests of the planet? Whether you agree as to whether it is an effective measure or not, hopefully you can respect the motivation. I think Alan Jones is a classic ‘bully boy’ who likes to think he pulls the strings behind the scenes and is not dealing well with his ever declining relevance.

A public letter to Alan Jones,

I wanted to express my disappointment about your comments that the PM’s father died of shame. I feel that this statement was in extremely poor taste. It represented a lack of good judgement on your part because it crossed the line between healthy debate (which we need in a democracy) and descended into nastiness.

A family’s grief should not be used as a political weapon. The loss of a spouse or parent is a very painful time. People deserve the right to grieve in private. Your comments showed a lack of decency and compassion towards people who are grieving. Those comments were unprofessional. They were tacky.

My hope is that you use this as a opportunity to reflect on how you express yourself. What comments are appropriate? What comments are inappropriate? Where are your boundaries? Your integrity? Your ethics? What do you want your legacy to be? Do you want to be a mouthpiece for the Australian public or are ratings, controversy and publicity more important?

Please note that your recent comments about the PM’s father dying of shame do not represent myself or anyone that I know.

Jones is very close to Abbott and the rest of the LNP front bench. Typical LNP haters who especially hate women which is why they give Gillard such a hard time. LNP voters in general though think like this- most are conservative, bigoted and are happy to have religious extremists such as Abbott, Bernardi, Joyce and Vervanti Wells as our countrie’s government.

Cate, as a “24 year old professional woman who has generally always been a LNP voter” who does “not agree with a lot of what Tony Abbott says”, may I ask why you continue to support/vote for a party whose leader you disagree with “a lot”?

Tony Abbott’s response to Alan Jones’ remarks was ‘he was completely out of line’. Is that it? Really??
When asked by Laurie Oakes this morning on the Today show what he thought of Alan Jones’ comments Karl Stefanovic repeated Abbott’s line ‘he was out of line”
Using the death of a parent to score political points is more than “out of line”, it is deplorable.

I hope Alan Jones feels the full disgust of this community… x

Jonathon Marshall taking the high moral ground? Pfft, he thought nothing of sensationalizing a story about a politician’s daughter for his own personal gain.

I dare say he’ll be fetted by the media this week but he’s far from a hero. The repercussions for this girl and her family were awful. He took advantage f a young woman, invaded her privacy and publicised a crime *that she was never convicted of.*

Dumb arse comment- But he is not the devil- Good on people for calling him out on it and letting him know it is not ok but let’s not troll him in return. I bet he has done more charity, and done more good then the majority of us.
Everyone of us has said something out of line and out of context before and while we can point out a line has been crossed with these comments we should totally disparage him as a person- people armulti dimentional and he is not a terrible person.

Move on 2GB and find someone who is the person that Alan Jones once was, I was always an AJ believer but now convinced he has to go, an embarrassment to the values that he once upheld. His remarks were beyond ugly and offensive, but I don’t think he should have to resign. His listeners can keep listening to his increasingly irrelevant crap and he can go hoist himself with his own petard, which he manages to do with almost-comic regularity whenever he opens his mouth.

I think what Alan Jones said is shameful. It’s a terrible thing to say – and it has damaged his reputation and definitely his ’cause’.
But I don’t believe for a second the PM will take this on board personally, a) she has no respect for Jones and b) she’s no doubt sat in enough dinners of this nature to be realistic about how things get out of hand.
And don’t get me wrong – I think this personal comment is WAY out of hand.
But, I ‘do’ events, and when a speaker is addressing the ‘faithful’ in any arena, they will say the most unbelievable things. A lot of which, if it was being recorded would warrant a public apology. I have been asked to ensure there are no recording devices etc at events on a number of occasions with some very high profile speakers.
It doesn’t make it right – but it does happen. A lot.
When does ‘playing to the audience’ go too far? Right now.
Jones will pay the price – or a price. But Ms Gillard is a politician – one fighting for her life – so I think it would be naive to suggest that she will not take this in her stride and she will definitely grab the sympathy vote and/or play on it to discredit Jones and others who do not support her policies.

What happened to the MM comments policy? Jones is being labelled evil, vile, repugnant, disgrace of a human being etc. you are all playing the man and not the ball – Mia’s own tweet chief amongst them. Something Jones himself isn’t even doing – he criticises her policies and performance, not who she is as a person.

Are you serious? Berating the Prime Minister for being 10 minutes late for an ‘interview’ on his program (because god knows trying to run a radio program is infinitely more important and meaningful than someone trying to run an entire country) and then repeatedly calling her JuLIAR to her face is not about policy at all… this latest bile is just another spiteful episode an ongoing poisonous, personal vendetta against Gillard. He disingenuously hides behind “it’s the policies, not the person” because he is a spin doctor of the highest (or rather, lowest) order, and an egregious liar himself – ‘cash for comment’ anyone? The chaff bag comment and this latest piece of bastardry are merely the most outrageously offensive of his comments that have made national news; he will never die of shame himself because he has none. So if people are calling him names, well boo hoo… live by the sword, die by it.

While you’re at it girls, boycott channel nine for Sam Newman and Karl Stefanovic and any other male idiot in any media forum who disrespects women publicly. Zero tolerance, straight up. Lets let them know there is no place for it and act on it immediately. We do make up half the population.
