They have been charged with serious assault and public nuisance after they allegedly kicked, spat at and racially abused an elderly indigenous man on a Gold Coast bus.

But the brother of one of the women charged, Larna Watmough has taken to Facebook to claim his sister is now being bullied in the same way Charlotte Dawson was.

Larna Watmough, 21, and Layni Cameron, 17 appeared on Saturday in the Southport Magistrate’s Court.

Watmough received bail, whilst Cameron was remanded in custody.

The incident made headlines when a video made by a 13-year old girl of them allegedly assaulting a 77-year old man, went viral last week.

There were calls to jail the girls and social media went on the attack over the incident.

Mitchell Watmough, the brother of Larna and another relative Aaron Watmough have defended Larna saying that the young teenager who made the video has created a circus, and that the video was edited to make his sister look guilty.

He accused the teenager of taking the video to Channel 9 before it was shown to the police.

Many of the vicious comments on social media called for the girls to be brutally raped, murdered and assaulted.

He writes, “I have watched as cyber bullying has been taken to a whole new level towards my sister and my family after the loss of the late Charlotte Dawson committing suicide over cyber bullying and everyone declaring we should lock up cyber bullies.”

The victim, a vision-impaired former jockey, has spoken to the media himself denying his role in the incident. He claims that he only told the girls to “stop swearing”.

Mitchell Watmough’s Facebook status accuses the jockey of provocation, and says that 77-year old disabled pensioner Paul Buttigieg is ‘sexist’.

Aaron Watmouth has also defended the girl’s actions

He says that his sister is not racist she was in fact listening to music and singing a song by rap artist YG.

The Facebook status even defends his mother who he says has been attacked online as well.

“Anyone that knows my mother will say she is a hard working, generous, selfless person to anyone she meets.”

“The facts will come soon enough,” he writes. “My first sight of the video I was also disgusted and embarrassed, but after learning the video has been edited to make only the girls look like terrible villains I now see what the media has done to create a massive story.”

The Courier-Mail writes today that these allegations will be part of their legal defence.

The case will return to court on April 23.
