Baby 380x256 Daily Buzz: Court orders parents to urgently vaccinate babySUPREME COURT ORDERS VACCINATIONS

Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Jean Dalton ordered two parents to urgently take their 40-hour-old child to the hospital for Hepatitus B vaccinations because the child had a 20 per cent chance of being infected with the virus. The baby’s mother had a chronic form of Hep B.

Doctors said if the child was infected it was almost certain to develop cancer or liver disease.

The parents were opposed to vaccinations on religious and philosophical grounds (the father did not trust pharmaceutical companies) but Justice Dalton, whose decision was made last year but published today, found the child’s immediate welfare outweighed the concerns of the parents.

1. We’re all still talking about The Wiggles and the slightly suspicious sudden retirement of three of its members.

Three original Wiggle members will leave at the end of 2012. They'll be replaced by backup dancers from the group.

2. The new Queensland Premier Campbell Newman is taking plants out of department buildings because they cost $900,000 a year to keep.

3. All 10 abattoirs in New South Wales use ‘deficient’ practices in the slaughter of animals, a government review has found.

4. The man who shot and killed Australian heart surgeon Dr Victor Chang is set to be released on parole in the next few months, on the condition he is deported immediately to Malaysia. Chiew Seng Liew was sentenced to 26 years in jail and has served 21.

5. This was going around yesterday but it’s so worth a mention. A former Geelong Grammar School student and her mother are suing the school because she did not get into law. She claims the school did not support her, the school notes she did not finish all her work.

6. Remember the ‘runaway millionaires’ who took $10 million after it was accidentally deposited into their bank account by Westpac and went on the run to Bangkok? Well, a jury has found them guilty in court this week.

I’m a little uncomfortable for the Government selectively making vacination compulsory. I was under the impression that vacinating your kids was a matter of choice in this country.

As the matter is now, you are always going to have “at risk” babies like the baby in the article not getting vacinated.
But in reality all unvacinated children are at risk of getting life threatening diseases.

Maybe it’s time that the Government made childhood vacinations compulsory. Want a medicare card that allows you treatment in the Australian medical system? Prove that the child’s vacinations are up to date, miss a vacination and your medicare card gets cancelled. How easy is that…

Well, if you are into big brother government activities like that, might I suggest you read 1984? It should provide you with lots of ideas.

Meanwhile, this is a free country, it would definitively be problematic to human rights for the government to force all people have their children injected with any substances!

I had a look at the AVN Facebook page to see what Meryl Dorey has to say about the Hep B baby case. Quite a lot. But the most alarming is her fourth point:

“If you find yourself in this situation and you are trapped in the hospital, contact the AVN and we will do what we can for you. We have hidden parents before and we will do so again if necessary. We have also worked with at least one hospital in Sydney to rewrite their policy after they tried to do this to a young mum. Now, they have it in writing that they will not and cannot force anyone to agree to have the vaccination if that is not their wish. If we don’t stand up for each other, who will be there to stand up for us when we need them?” MD

Actually, this is a bit scary too, “If you KNOW that you or your partner are Hep B positive, choose your doctor and hospital well or consider a home birth to avoid this situation altogether.” Meryl Dorey.

So the AVN would be willing to take care of that person in 20-30 years when he/she develops liver problems??? I’d think not. I know it’s not going to happen, but I wish someone would shut that woman up once and for all.

I would be interested to know which hospital allegedly ‘worked’ with the AVN considering the extremely dodgy rep the AVN has. Bet she won’t name the place. Sounds like a load of tosh.

I’d ask the AVN but I am banned apparently. And I was so polite with my question to them. Not fair.

The ruling is great, although so unfortunate a court has to make a ruling in the best interest of the child, as the parents seem unable to. Annoying that it just feeds Ms Dorey’s persecution complex. Read article on her in last Saturday’s Good Weekend. I didn’t know her son was affected by autism and that’s where she got her motivation. Explains alot. She’s ‘Hidden Families’ What is she? Running the Underground Railway?

I did the same thing Kate (I often have a look as I wonder about vaccines but there are just too many holes in the Anti-vaccination networks ‘research’) and Meryls comments as you stated above are very disturbing!!! Also there is one of their members creating hysteria on the site about her just reading about this case and never once mentioned that the babys Mother had Hep B – so creating fear and panic that it could happen to any one of us at any time which is not true at all!

Didn’t an anti-AVN group find out that she hadn’t indeed hidden anyone or managed to change any hospital policy, because non-compulsory vaccination was already the policy of hospitals and the Australian Government? Not sure how reliable a source it was; wish I could remember where I read it.

I think Campbell Newman is going a little bit too far. He has also (apparently) banned tea and coffee. Public servants don’t get many perks, a few plants and a free cuppa isn’t too much too ask. Doing things like this really affects workplace morale (because control is taken away from employees creating stress). Especially since he is also refusing to fund the NDIS as well. Interesting times up here in Qld.

The Geelong grammar case is just….oh dear. My school didn’t turn me into a broadway singer either (which I’ve always wanted to be) but I don’t think I could be bothered to sue them for that (since I can’t sing, but then I did study music so….). Time for some personal responsibility

I see what you are saying, but a LOT of non-government workplaces do not offer tea or coffee or have money to spend on “plants”. I bring my own tea into work and I certainly do not have any plants (I work in a rural law office). At least your wage is often decent (gov jobs on the whole are much better paid then their private counterparts) and you often get fairly nice hours.

I’ll add teachers to the list. We certainly don’t get plants or tea or coffee! We have a once a fortnight morning tea, but the faculties take it in turns to bring in treats to share.

Edit: Which, for the record, I think is great!

oh agree Anonymous, I’ve worked in a mixture. But taking something small away (even though the bottom dollar looks shocking) isn’t necessarily the answer.

I’m an allied health professional. Coming back to the office after a hard day dealing with some challening situations and being told “sorry, you can’t have a 5c cup of tea because of budget cuts” is a bit….but that’s just my opinion. I know there is alot of wastage that needs to be reined in. Let’s hope common sense prevails eventually

Perhaps if government agencies like QLD Health for example stopped wasting millions of dollars on crap pay systems that don’t work and endless beurocracy, we’d be able to afford a 5 cent cup of coffee for all those doctors and nursing and admin staff pulling double shifts because we don’t have enough staff to safe people’s lives…

I agree. It may be a false efficiency. If you take away the little things that make life at work bearable, you get a disillusioned, unmotivated workforce, with reduced productivity and higher staff turnover. Not saying someone will quit over the lack of a cup of tea, but it’s a straw-that-broke situation.

I know at my workplace, the fact that a toilet cubicle (with the toilet removed) is what we are supposed to use for a tearoom, has certainly not helped morale. It is helpful to be able to leave your desk and chat to a colleague, to debrief and share ideas.

I’ve worked for Federal Govt as a public servant for 12 years and we have never been supplied Tea/Coffee/Milk etc. That’s what a work social club or Tea & Coffee fund is for.

I’m sorry, but I think the line has to be drawn somewhere and this is only the beginning. There are far too many perks for public servants (at state & federal level) that are a pure waste of the tax payers money.

My workplace has temporarily taken plants out of the office, and it is really affecting the mood of everyone sitting in the cubicles on our floor. It might seem strange but it is really sterile without plants, and noise also seems to carry a lot further.

I am lucky to have an office and I have a plant secretly stashed in there.

Can’t people just buy their own plants and bring them in to work? Look after their own plant, even water it with water from home if they’re really cracking down on it? At my workplace, we all have a plant on our desk, but that’s because we wanted them, bought them and look after them ourselves. No problem!

Is there really a religion that opposes vaccinations? And wouldn’t make an exception for the sake of preventing a lifetime of misery for a child?
I really do wonder if these parents really understood the risk they were taking.
Potentially a dropped ball by the health system too, 40+ hours may be too late, although perhaps they don’t believe in antenatal care either.

There are very small number of religions opposing vaccinations, but most are just faking religious grounds because it is easier to argue than the ‘evil bug pharma’ line. When people are brainwashed to that degree they will even put their kids lives at risk.

The Gammar School girl needs to get a grip- I got a great HSC and went to a bogan red neck cess pit- and many of my fellow bogans did too. If she felt she wasn’t supported she could have changed schools.
