The arrest in New York at the weekend of International Monetary Fund chief, Dominique Strauss-Kahn has caused shockwaves around the world, and once again raised the topic of whether sexual mores and relations between men and women in France are different to those in Anglo-Saxon-dominated cultures like our own.

The French financier is facing charges that he sexually assaulted a maid in his New York hotel room. The maid alleges Strauss-Kahn, or DSK as he is known in his homeland, emerged naked from the bathroom when she came into his Sofitel hotel suite, grabbed her from behind and pulled her into the bedroom and attacked her.

Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer has denied any wrongdoing by his client, saying the head of one of the world’s most influential financial institutions and aspiring French presidential candidate will “vigorously defend” the charges made against him.

The news has caused a storm of controversry in France where DSK was widely touted as the man most likely to topple the current – and widely unpopular – French President, Nicolas Sarkozy in next year’s election. It has also opened the gate on a flood of older sexual harassment complaints against Strauss-Kahn – including by the French writer, Tristane Banon who claims she was the victim of an alleged sexual assault at the hands of the politician in 2002.

DSK’s arrest has in turn sparked elaborate conspiracy theories in France, where newspapers, radio and the online sphere are buzzing with claims and counter-claims that the former economics professor – renowned for his weakness for women – was lured into a carefully staged, politically-motivated honey trap.

Dominique Strauss Kahn Cheatsheet: the most disgraced man in France.

Dominique Strauss Kahn

Strauss-Kahn’s wife, the accomplished and respected French TV journalist Anne Sinclair, has spoken publically in defence of her husband, asserting that the charges will finally be found to be false. The reaction of the French electorate seems to be evenly divided between outrage and indifference (with those in the latter camp electing to react to the news with the Gallic shrug for which their nation is renowned).

Whatever the truth behind the ‘l’affaire DSK”, as it is being euphemisitically referred to in France, the episode once again brings to the fore the prickly question of whether relations between men and women in France are drastically different to those that apparently prevail in Anglo-oriented countries like Australia.

I had the great pleasure of living in France for ten years, returning to Australia only last year. The French have a reputation for being much less concerned about sexual indiscretions – including, most famously, infidelity – than their more stitched-up Anglo-Saxon cousins. Certainly, living among them for a decade, it was easy to detect a distinctly more laissez-faire attitude to sex than any I had been previously used to. It is, in many ways, a more honest approach to human relations – allowing for shades of grey where we cling stubbornly to black and white.

Marriage in France is an institution regarded with at least the same seriousness as anywhere else in the world. And there is no question there are French couples who are as faithful to one another as married couples are in more prurient societies like Australia and the US.

However, France is still a stubbornly chauvinistic society. Despite French women being among the most self-assured, self-contained, self-confident and assertive women on the planet, they are very often dealt a rough hand in their homeland by a society that quietly condones promiscuity among its menfolk. It is, in many ways, a peculiarly Latin trait – and one that runs like a seam through the countries that hug the Mediterranean, including Spain and – most famously – Italy.

In the decade I lived in Paris, it was revealed former French President Francois Mitterrand had a secret second family stashed in the south of France while tales of his successor, Jacques Chirac’s extra-marital carry-on was the country’s most open secret.

Many French women will declare that they too are liberated by their culture’s apparent lack of prudishness when it comes to marital fidelity. They say that they too are free to act on sexual urges outside the strictures of their marriage. But unfortunately for them, women in France are hardwired in much the same way that women in Anglo-Saxon cultures are, meaning the straying is generally harder to do and tougher to take.

And so, many of them live with a double standard that suits their philandering men folk down to the ground. A kind of ‘don’t-ask, don’t tell” mentality that ultimately serves to eat away at their confidence and sense of worth.

It’s a cliché, to be sure, to assert that all French men are cheats and all French women are victims. The country is too wonderfully diverse, its people too proudly assured to allow themselves to be characterised in such a clumsy way. But as long as the country’s political elite continues to be embroiled in sex scandals and – importantly – its behaviour indulged, accepted and ultimately excused by the electorate, the lot of French women is going to never be manifestly better.

The French divorce laws encode that infidelity is a fault. So go figure how the whole of French society is perceived as condoning infidelity. I for one, know that that code is alive and well. Just one of those French things that makes no sense.

so what do the conspiracy “he was set up” theorists think about the details that have been released about the maid being a widowed devout muslim who is reportedly devastated. is that all a lie too?

Well if he did do it he is a beast and needs to get thrown in jail.
And the lady needs all the support she can get.

But I don’t think there is anything wrong with wondering if he may have been set up this early on. I mean, there is a massive political motive to get him out of the way.

It it is true through I really really feel for the lady and really wish her all the best.

or by your logic she is a lying whore who must be ignored like all those other pesky women who cry rape.

By my logic she is not a whore. It’s pretty low behaviour putting words in my mouth. I never said that and frankly you shouldn’t have said it.

As for his age, wealth, gender, race – I don’t see anyone discriminating except you by bringing that into it.

If there is proof, he will be convicted. As he said he did not so much as touch her, it will be VERY EASY to find out if he is lying, because forensic evidence will pick up so much as a residue of breathe.

No women who cries rape is pesky, she is not automatically to believed anymore than the person accused. That’s fair, unless you believe in guilt by accusation until proven otherwise.

I don’t feel like I have to decry the act of rape to state the obvious – That until the case is heard, neither I nor yourself know the outcome.

As for what she will achieve?

          Money, money, money.

If he is found guilty there will be money to be sued for.

Do you realize that even if not a single shred of dna is found on her, it could still go to trial.

Do you realize that if he is innocent, he could still be convicted?

Do you realize that if she is lying and he is found not guilty, it will hurt real rape victims?

by the same token i would like you to not put words in my mouth.

i think i disagree with every point you make, but will just mention a few.

firstly to suggest that any amount of money would help someone recover from a sexual assault is absurd especially given how devastated she is reported to be.

also, the fact you don’t understand that age, wealth, gender and race have no relevance suggest that you probably share similar characteristics eg. white male.

Finally I’ll ask you some questions:

Do you realise that even if dna is found on her, it could still NOT go to trial.

Do you realise that if he is guilty, he could still NOT be convicted?

Do you realise that if he is lying and he is found not guilty, it will hurt rape victims?

As a victim of pretty severe sexual harrasment by a similar type of man (eg. rich and powerful) i would bet money that he will get off, they usually do…

Read it again, I didn’t say the money would help her recover.

              I never said it.

              You asked to quote…

tell me FHB what this maid would want to achieve out of this whole situation?”

My answer was not an opinion. She does stand to make a lot of money which she has none.

Of course if he is guilty that wont help, that’s kind of a given

Rather than argue back and fro with you, I’ll ask you a question.

Do you believe in innocent until proven guilty or do you believe that it is fine to assume he is guilty because he is a rich white business man.

Do you know how incredibly sexist and racist it is to assume that if someone is a rich white business man they are …..well anything really.

But you can clear it all up right now.

Are you open to to the idea he is completely innocent and she is lying?

      2. Probably not, he is undoubtedly like many of these types in similar positions. How do you think they get up jacobs ladder? They are utterly ruthless with no moral or ethical comparison to what many percieve as normal.

      3. As to your question of did it actually go down as reported? I am quite sceptical. but I will endeavour to illuminate you. Media comes from the latin word Medi which translates to medium, middle or center. Allegedly if you control the middle you can influence the full spectrum of opinion. Some could argue that this could also apply to other words sourced from the latin Medi…

My partner is French. We lived in France together for a few years.
He believes Dominique has been set up, in his words: a man that smart would never do anything that dumb. Whereas there must be a lot of very powerful and rich people out there (Sarkozy and co maybe?) who must just be REVELLING in this. There is certainly a motive for taking DSK out , that’s for sure.

I see his point. But I don’t know enough about the guy and wasn’t there so hard to make a real judgement.

However I would like to add that out of all my male French friends I do not think any would say or believe that sexual assault is culturally acceptable in France. To be honest I dont think French guys attitudes towards sex are any different than that of guys here in Australia – that is : everyone has a different opinion – towards sex. However most guys in both locations would agree sexual assault to be a big no-no.

Really? Bill Clinton nearly lost his presidency due to accepting a blow job from an intern. Eliot Spitzer, gun anti-crime man, went down for sleeping with prostitutes (illegal in New York). The list is endless, I could go on. It is proven without a doubt that powerful smart men can be utterly stupid when it comes to their dicks. And yes, I know those examples are consensual but still. Very dumb things from very smart men, all for sex.

Oh…the sexual assault has been alleged, has it ? Women popping up all over the place alleging sexual misconduct by the same man. The man MUST be guilty then ! Women are saying so. Therefore it is.

Anyone ever heard of the line “innocent until proven guilty” ? Do consider that should your husband, son or brother have the same allegations thrown at him.

Of course, no one has anything to gain should the allegation lead to a conviction, do they ?

This article is really upsetting. However “inadvertently” it’s been done it is not okay to take an allegation of sexual assault & turn it into a fanciful discussion of whether the French are just less uptight about sex. It’s a re-framing of an alleged crime that undermines the victim. Hasn’t his former step-daughter just come out & alleged that she was also sexually assaulted by this man? This has nothing to do with being liberated or free from repression. It’s about a crime that many people don’t report for fear they’ll be trivialized. Really disappointed in the editorial judgement in publishing this story in this way.

So this man was already naked in his room.

Then an unprofessional maid enters his room without so much as a warning.

But, because this up-until-now professional man with no criminal record, well, he just can not help himself and must have seen red.

Because, you know, rape is all about violence (though this man has never been violent), and is never about sex.

Makes me wonder why men don’t go around raping each other to show who’s boss, in fact boxing should have been replaced by raping as the man’s sport.

Because having forcible sex with someone is never about SEX???

    WTF?

    Why the face?

So this man (because rape is violence) became uncontrollably angry and thought he would teach her a lesson, even if it meant jail time.

    OR…

She rudely caught him naked and in order to not get fired she falsely accused him of rape?

Why did she not immediately report it?

Dude – The entire male gender goes on trial every time some one makes an assumption of male guilt.

That makes me angry when I spend a great deal of my time and money trying to make the world freer for everybody.

I put my time and money where my mouth is.

The problem is that my reward is often to see the way society is set up to assume men are bad and women are not.

Because of this, men are jailed and their lives are destroyed often because they don’t get a fair trial due to the heavy, pervasive destruction arm of prejudice in society towards boys and men.

All I tried to point out was that if rape is about anger, then why was he angry?

But people come on here saying he should have put a sign on his door and he should have done this and that.

If he is innocent then that is victim blaming, if not to hell with him, but where was her cleaning cart?

Eyewitnesses gave statements that don’t back her claims up and I think there is something dubious here.

But no where in this article does it state that he is guilty and not innocent.

And the entire male gender is not on trial, some people have made comments about sex scandals and men in power, but it’s not like I start hating my dad or boyfriend every time I read about one.

And don’t go thinking that all feminists automatically thinks he’s guilty…. that is a huge generalisation. Look what happened to Brett Stuart, now there’s a very prominent case that proved that allegations aren’t always true.

He may be guilty or innocent. The hotel staff may be truthful, exaggerating or completely lying.

I’m responding (obviously) to the preponderance of comments insisting he must be guilty.

Actually I worded that deliberately “The entire male gender goes on trial every time some one makes an assumption of male guilt.”

If you read that over again you’ll realize that the assumption of guilt based on gender is the trial of that gender not the individual in the first instance.

It’s a relatively clever word play. (if I do say so myself – Which I do)

You may have thought my comment misplaced, but what about the other fifty or so comments that do not address the article in question?

Just mine or just because I dissent to the idea of he MUST be automatically guilty.

I made a judgement on knowing more than most people would have bothered to look for and that doesn’t mean I’m going to be right. I wasn’t there, but I do know that there is a lot of gravitas to the idea he is innocent versus the tired old cliche that he is guilty by way of being a man.

The problem is, this is not me being rude, it is me disagreeing with you, unfortunately some people feel they can just assume male guilt is an acceptable prejudice and if I call them on it, then I’m the ignorant one, but if I turn the tables fifty or so people come out guns blazing.

If you can’t see something wrong with that, then I can not explain it to you.

As for feminism, I support equal rights and responsibilities but that extends to the justice system. I have spent a great deal of time looking for a single feminist blog that does not go on to attack this man, or even claim not to make a judgement until due process has concluded, but the tired old “he’s guilty”, “the press is victim blaming” or just “the victim can not get the trust she deserves” never mind they do not at ANY stage extend such sensibilities to the accused-but-not-convicted.

If you see that this not one eyed and bias in the extreme, again I could not possibly change you mind.

But before you accuse me of being rude, did you stop to pick over the posts of those people who were rude to me and used name calling and insults simply because I didn’t subscribe to their beliefs?

Did you afford them the same “respect”?

Actually – I’ll do you one better?

Name one place where I was rude to an individual and I’ll flat out apologize.

“but that comment was rather silly.”
t is ludicrous to make the assumptions you have made”
“You are only embarrassing yourself with your ignorance and ranting.”
“Who is your rant aimed at”
“Your hatred of women is quite clear.”

All completely justified I’m sure because, you know, I don’t agree with them or you. So hostility is fine then right?

Correct me any time you like anonymous (if that is your real name)

I haven’t made an assumption based on gender, but I reserve the right to make a judgement based on a rigid belief system (feminism) that has systemic misandry and a lack of respect for critical thinking and individual rights.

Until one of the feminist “leaders” comes out and ask for due process (tick tock) I’ll try not to hold my breathe.

Allegations of rape, domestic violence and sexual harrassment stick, and yes, this is a huge problem, with many people declaring the accused guilty before a court does. Assuming that the alleged victim is lying or casting aspersions on their character is not the way to fix it.

P.S. Nice generalisation there on feminists.

Not a generalization on feminists cat, a fact. Find me a feminist blog that believes he is possibly innocent and I’ll send you a dubloon.

Assumption of lies versus assumption of crime is the actual balance of justice once the evidence is in play, so I guess we’ll all wait and see.

He denies any contact at all and the police are taking dna evidence, so the matter should be cleared up pretty fast as to his/her guilt

I am a loud and proud feminist and I think it is quite likely he has been set up and is innocent (well of this alleged rape anyway!)
In my opinion there is too much of a motive for him to be out of the game to be president, and would he really be that stupid? I think the chances of this outweigh the possibility that he did rape the lady.
That said, this is just my guess going from the facts I know.

Please, stop being so frighteningly quick to judge without knowing any of the facts.”

        …And here’s my major problem.

You won’t post that to the other fifty posts that assume he’s guilty right?

They are not obviously frighteningly quick to judge because, you don’t disagree right?

See, I don’t know either way, but I simply posited that it is possible he is not.

        Sacrilege right?

He could be innocent or guilty, but the other commenters assume he is guilty I assume he might not be, but not that he isn’t and I’m the one being presumptuous?

Again, so many rude comments aimed at me, just because I dare to consider the possibility a woman could be lying.

Is it really fine for this to occur?

Do you have a problem with all rude behaviour, all assumptions, or just me because I don’t agree with you

Have we missed the point here? Sexual assault is not a crime of sexual urge, its a crime of power.
This isnt about men having lots of consensual affairs, be they French, Italian or American.
This is about powerful men feeling they are invincible and above the law and using this power to demean and assault a woman in the most traumatic way possible.

This article seriously misses the point.

Hmm, what about Arnold Schwarzenegger? Splitting with Maria after she found out about his 10 year old child with a housekeeper? I really don’t see this as a uniquely French phenomenon. I see more as a ‘powerful men with huge sex drives’ phenomenon.

I once saw a sex documentary on SBS in which french women were being interviewed. I found their open and candid responses to be very refreshing. They’re sexual confidence was very attractive and admirable, it was great to seem them so relaxed and happy to discuss their needs, wants and desires.

You also have to look at the massive political motive for getting him out of the game of running for president. There a HUGE motive to have him framed – is there not?
I’m not saying this is what has necessarily happened, however I dont think this possibility should be discounted this early on.

You make an excellent point. If it seems in this piece I am characterising DSK’s alleged assault as an “indiscretion” then it is inadvertant. There is no question that sexual assault and attempted rape are far more heinous crimes than infidelity. I was merely using the DSK affair – the details of which are still emerging – as a jumping off point to discuss the issue of infidelity and whether or not it is perceived differently across different cultures.

At the risk of upsetting some – this one stinks of a set-up. There are too many in the “establishment” in France and throughout the EU who want this man gone – his views and plans threaten their very livelihood.

His philandering ways have probably been used against him – an affair would be deemed acceptable (as indicated by the article) but an uwanted and unasked for assault is not acceptable (as we all agree) so this is the path taken.

see i would call her a victim of sexual assault.

I beleive what JFK is implying with out saying it is that the maid may have been paided off. I in some ways agree. As people below are saying it is an alleged assult at this stage nothing has been proven. The same can be said as to a set up.

I do not want to undermine any one who has been a true victim of any form of assult. And in some way I hope that it is a set up for the sake of the woman involved and the she is not a victim of a horrible crime.

I agree… just because French men have “laissez-faire attitude to sex” doesn’t mean they have a laissez-faire attitude toward sex crimes. Sexual liberation and sexual assault are two completely different things and the article insinuates that sexual assault is more accepted or rampant in French society. The men may be “less concerned about sexual indiscretions” and more likely to cheat on their wives, but it doesn’t mean that the same men will commit sexual assault.
