by MIA FREEDMAN
It’s not every day the Prime Minister sits at your desk and types on your computer. Welcome to Thursday. When the Prime Minister’s office approached us a few days ago saying that the PM was keen to engage with Mamamia readers on the subject of childcare, we swung into action. Desks were tidied. Muffins and cupcakes were baked. An advance team including the Australian Federal Police and a charming man called Jeremy (whom I immediately called Jez and hugged) came 48hours prior to assess the security situation. It was very West Wing but not really. Somehow, I then began inviting people to come and meet Julia Gillard. My children. Their friends. Their friends’ siblings. As if it was my wedding. The only reason my parents and in-laws didn’t rock up is because they’re away on holidays.

The entire team - and a few stragglers - at the end of the morning for a group photo.
When my kids arrived my 3yo announced “Is the Prime Minister not here yet?” and then got busy with the muffins. It started officially shortly before 10am with a warm ‘G’day!’ from the PM as she got out of her car and came straight over to say hello (I kissed her) and meet my 6yo daughter who was particularly excited. Girl power etc.
In the hour she spent with us, we talked about the issues around childcare – from the point of view of parents and childcare workers. More than 400 comments were left on the post and they canvassed a wide range of issues, problems, suggestions and concerns. You can read them – and the replies the Prime Minister left here. And Kate Ellis will be replying to more of the comments over the next few days so please check back.
A few things you might like to know:
The PM does not have a ghost typist. She is a fast and accurate typist. Even with 17 cameras filming her and several people watching over each shoulder (me and Child Care Minister Kate Ellis).
Julia laughs loudly and often. “She’s so warm!’ being the most common observation after she’d left.
She has to pose for A LOT of photos. In various combinations we did me, my family, the MM team, the security guards and building owners, my teenager and his friends etc etc etc. “I rarely blink during photos,” she said. A lot of practice.
Fun fact: Mamamia’s new Managing Editor is Jamila Rizvi who until today worked for Kate Ellis. This was her first day in the Mamamia office and it was almost like a surreal matrimonial handover from old boss to new. Or a hostage situation. I’ve assured Kate she can still have weekend access. We have not come to blows.
Fun fact #2: I asked the PM if she wanted a tea or coffee and she asked for a black coffee which our intern Olivia expertly delivered. The PM did not finish the coffee. I may sell the cup on eBay.
If you’ve got something you’d like to say about childcare, hop on over to the post here.

Hi, have read a lot of comments. One thing that is not discussed much is that unfortunately a lot of child care centres are privately owned. Therefore it is designed to make money for the owner and that is what it does. Provide a great life for the person who owns the business. I have worked in long daycare and am now fortunate to work in a preschool environment, not for profit. How a out getting Barry in and talk a out making preschool afford for all children in nsw as we have the highest fees and lowest attendance rate. Shame.

You’ve got to despair when some members of the public feel the best reason not to like our PM is because she’s “blood thirsty” – (nevermind the fact that members of the Labor party hated working for Kevin Rudd and implementation of policies under his leadership was completely stymied by his arrogant style of leadership – whereas party members love working for JG and she gets things DONE) Or that “no other country has embraced a carbon tax” whereas in fact once South Korea starts trading in 2015, 27 of 34 OECD members will have a national carbon price

This is a strong, reformist government leading the fastest growing economy in the developed world. I get why the mamamia team was so excited to have her visit given how hard she works trying to get good results for Australians.

I’m sorry guest, but I will never condone a tax that causes such misery to those less fortunate than ourselves..all I see and hear is that taxing carbon is a money making racket.
“Longoli and his family of six lost everything last year when, with three months notice, the Ugandan government evicted him and thousands of others from the Mubende and Kiboga districts to make way for the UK-based New Forests Company to plant trees, to earn carbon credits and ultimately to sell the timber.”

What a massive opportunity lost to really engage the PM on her record and decisions.
The child care issue is obviously an important one (and I’m a single mother with a 3 year old), but doesn’t stand alone as is affected by all areas of the management of the country and economy.
Why oh why MM didn’t you pre-plan a series of questions for her and have her answer on a variety of compelling policies!
Wow – I am shocked at this opportunity lost and how much MM skewed this post in favour of a PM who really deserves to be grilled on a spectrum of major decisions.
I for one don’t give a hoot what she ate, how the office was fluffed up, what the PM or Mia wore or what her nails looked like – for goodness sake!
Muffin Madness and PM Pandering!!
Doesn’t fool me!

One name per post for comments please. Additional comments from the same IP with the identical sentiment will be deleted.
Thanks.

I found the whole “oooooh we’re so excited to have Julia visit” shtick cringeworthy and off-putting. It was such a good opportunity to perhaps put a few questions to the PM, but you were apparently too busy baking muffins and taking photos.
loading...
Hey Counterpoint,
Whenever anyone comes to visit or there’s something big going on, I can’t help but make a fuss and bake. And it was no different when the Prime Minister came. Yes, it was a huge deal for the PM and her staff to visit MM – but it wasn’t the time for us to put questions to her – she came to interact with the community and answer readers’ questions, which she did! (And the Minister for Child Care Kate Ellis has kept coming back to that post to keep the conversation going). – Lucy
loading...
Hey Lucy
I don’t know if it was a “no questions” policy from the PM but it’s not often that a you get a prime minister in your clutches for some exclusive questions. Trust me, the discussion was being monitored by news organisations but there was absolutely nothing of substance.
As for the baking and making a fuss, well yes, that’s just what a woman would do, isn’t it? Sorry, it doesn’t do much to dispel stereotypes about silly women belonging in the kitchen and not bothering their pretty heads with politics.
Just annoyed me, that’s all.
loading...
Note to self: Go visit the MM office and let Lucy know ahead of time so I get something freshly baked. Can you do scones, Lucy? I suck at them… but I love eating them. And if you happen to have raspberry jam and lots of fresh whipped cream – and perhaps a Flake to crumble over the top, go on, you know you want to try it now! – then I will be especially happy.
loading...
Funnily enough Lucy is the scone specialist!
loading...
Also one more very important point! Mamamia openly supports the right for gay marriage (as do I) Yet you laud over a PM that vocally and actively opposes this!!! (yet back in her university days she openly endorsed it – again one must question exactly what Julia actually stands for, or is it what is favorable by the factions in her party) Hypocrisy. How did Rick feel about the PMs visit, did he ask her about that in between her fairyland party? Maybe it helped in his decision to resign, as an intelligent member of your team maybe this last double standard tipped him over.
loading...
Actually, I appreciate people are complex. She is our PM and as much as I remain disappointed about same sex marriage views I openly applaud her for leadership on the NDIS which I consider to be an even more important issue. I can like and dislike policies on their individual merits and still engage with the office because ultimately dialogue is what creates change, not the cold shoulder!
loading...
So if I kick my dog with my foot, and feed it with my hand…that’s kk?
I will be admired cos at least I fed it?

I must say I am so amazed and disappointed that intelligent women like Mia and obviously other members of this forum believe Julia Gillard is a functioning, transformational or inspirational leader. She is terrible! Look at the facts: Her inability to tell the truth (Kevin Rudd) scenario, backtracking on many policies, rent resource tax, carbon tax etc. The carbon tax is going to affect every small business, every homeowner,it is a anti competitive policy that no other country has embraced (I understand the small difference it may make in 50 years) but at what cost to our nation? We are viewed as a laughing stock throughout the world due to the infighting, soap opera dramas and shocking opinion polls, I have just come back from Europe and they are aware and do comment! Also how about her decision to throttle superannuation!!! What better way to keep Australians reliant on welfare by capping how much we can place into our super, especially those in the 50+ age bracket who have the most disposable income to boost their super for retirement. Superannuation was originally introduced to remove our reliance on welfare later in life but also to reduce the governments exposure and costs for providing welfare for the aged. Whatever happened to the sovereign wealth fund to protect our heritage? Good grief the list is endless, factual and mind boggling. I am so over this ‘girl power’ mantra, I don’t care that she is the first female prime minister in Australia, well great, who cares, stop leveraging off it and run the country! I must admit am surprised Mia is so gushy over Julia, isnt Jessica Rudd a sometimes contributor to her business/site and close friend? This smacks of hypocrisy and lack of loyalty to me. Does anyone else agree? Would actually love to hear Mia’s views on my statements above.
loading...
Agree. She is just not liked, and I think that started with KR and went downhill from there.
For me, I think the Craig Thomson affair was the nail in the coffin.
I know it’s old school, but I still believe in honesty and integrity.
I struggle to find either in Ms Gillard. I would feel the same about anyone, not just a politician.
loading...
Actually I think that from within parliament (ex the oppn) most would find her to be a very good leader, and someone who gets the job done. She’s pushed through more legislation in this hung parliament than most governments do with a majority. There have been issues, do doubt, but the fact that many people don’t like her isn’t an indication of her intelligence or skill. Clearly she’s got a PR problem. From what I’ve read most people who meet her are very impressed by her genuine warmth and concern – which is reflected in the article above. She’s not perfect, like most pollies she’s made mistakes. I wouldn’t call her out on all the policies that you don’t like either, she’s the leader of a party. Most policies are determined by the party, with a few exceptions. I admire her. She’s put up with a lot of crap, some deserved, most not with absolute grace and dignity. I just wish the ALP would sort out their shit and start to remind people how well the economy is doing and the really big things that they have done well.
loading...
No, she has pushed through a lot of legislation promoted by private members, it’s the marriage of greens, independants and Labor that has caused an unusual amount of private member’s bills to be passed during Julia Gillard’s leadership.
The hung parliament is why the amount of bills passed appears high.
This wouldn’t normally happen.
loading...
hi michelle
would you like to post some facts to back up your claim?
loading...
We can start the count with the carbon tax that was wanted & pushed heavily by Bob Brown of the “Greens”. Then move onto the “Rent Resources Tax”, then look at “Superannuation”, before moving o to “Private Health”. Do I need to continue?

hi sarah
so would you like to post the actual count of bills introduced by the greens and independents
and perhaps you could post the number of bills introduced in previous parliaments
loading...
It looks like you were all star struck MM in the presence of your idol, and in the process of muffins, coffee, group hugs and lolly pops, missed the chance to ask the hard questions.
I am sure any LNP member would not get the same sickly rock star treatment at MM central. Your chat to Tony Abbott many moons ago was all very clinical and not a child or food treat in sight.
loading...
Hey WB,
I won pretend it wasn’t a huge deal to have the Prime Minister of Australia visit Mamamia, a business that started in my lounge room on my laptop jus a few years ago. I have met JG a few times but for those who haven’t, it WAS very exciting.
She did not come to be interviewed by me or to be asked ‘tough questions’ in a press conference. She was our guest and she was here to talk to our readers. To LISTEN to them actually.
Tony Abbott would be welcome in our office and would be treated with the same respect and courtesy.
He’s never asked. The invite is open.
loading...
Great job MM. Although I do have to have a giggle about how much you tidied up tee hee.
I think that the fact she took the time to come and chat with us all speaks volumes for the respect she has for this forum and this community. I saw some pretty negative comments online about this, but no matter what you think of her politics, the office of the Prime Minister deserves our respect.
loading...
Respect is a given till the recipent does something to lose it.
The office of the PM is worthy of respect, but not always the PM sitting in it.
PM’s all over the world have dones some terrible things, to blindly suggest they’re all worthy of respect just doesn’t cut it.
I think Labor knows how the majority of people feel about most of their politics, but where is the respect for us?
When the PM and her government just wilfully carry on, against the majorities wishes, it’s not so much a democracy, but a dictatorship.
It’s more than one issue, albeit childcare is very, very important and close to my heart. One issue does NOT a good government make.
loading...
I want to work at MamaMia!
loading...
Mia and team – congratulations to you all. Brilliant that she made the effort and tried to engage with Australian women about this issue. Hopefully something good will come out of it.
Great pics – felt like I was there.
loading...
I just don’t get this woman, we are constantly told how warm and lovely she is and yet, she appears to be entirely blood-thirsty when it comes to holding power. She has been caught out blatantly lying to the electorate and the independants she relies on for power, she has done nothing about two of her MP’s who seem to have been ripping off their employer, she seems to say anything to get what she wants.
If she is so warm and nice, why doesn’t her actions show it, where is her morale integrity?
I voted for her and feel very deceived.
loading...
at least she’s not tony abbott…rather her than him any day!
loading...
far out! and this whole thing was about tony abbott??
Really?
So who is Julia Gillard hmmmm?
loading...
hi Sue,
Blood-thirsty is a pretty strong description. I’ve never known of a politician who didn’t want to hold their office……it’s kind of the point, isn’t it?
loading...
Mia the PM totally ignores EVERYTHING the Australian public tell her and continues to implement things that the vast majority of the public do not want in place. She is blood thirsty…thirsty for all of our blood!
loading...
Nothing like a good dose of hyperbole on a Friday afternoon.
loading...
Sometimes good leaders put stuff in place that isn’t popular. Many people didn’t want medicare in the 70s, but most people now would not want to see it go. The GST wasn’t popular but it was the right thing to do. Good leaders have vision and plan for the future and don’t worry about who likes them.
loading...
Hi Mia, I do agree with you on many things, however, I really think Julia gillards performance has been terrible.
I know politicians lie and scheme, perhaps I’m naive, but I was expecting our first female prime minister to have a higher moral standard. I don’t want my daughters thinking lying and scheming to get a job is fine.
loading...
Why are females held to a different standard? She’s doing the same job as every other male politician, therefore it is completely understandable that she use the same tactics. Your comment is a touch sexist…
loading...
Hold office at what cost Mia?
When does the ‘point’ of Julia Gillard remaining in office be superseded by holding the respect of the nation?
The office of PM is supposed to be in service of the people – not to fuel an individual’s personal political ambition.
And it is that – her stats are worse than Rudd’s when she shafted him, so why isn’t she stepping aside – or hey, why not just follow the clear will of the people? (Seen the poll results and the stats of how many of her electorate want a Federal election called?)
Or just plain keeping check of her own integrity?
I considered posting a question for the PM – single mother with a 3 year old and a small business to run that I am – and then thought that it wasn’t worth my time to type it…
I wouldn’t get the truth, just a saccharine political response that she could and would reverse at any time that it fed her own agenda – to hold on at all costs.
A farce.
Hope the muffins were nice – the exercise was ridiculous and no-one is fooled.
What a huge opportunity missed to really examine and challenge her record.
That said, understand your dilemma – if the forum and questioning had been truly open and not just restricted to the question of child care, her minders would not have approved the visit and you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to enjoy a cuppa with the PM.
In your position MM, I would have held onto MY integrity and said thanks but no thanks – and not allowed your subscribers to be subjected to this well sanitised forum to benefit an untrustworthy PM, whose not only betrayed her own political counterparts, but her electorate by her relentless personal ambition.
loading...
Hi, you think we did MM readers a disservice by giving them the exclusive opportunity to share their thoughts/concerns/questions on childcare directly with the Prime Minister?
So she can use that information to help formulate changes to the industry?
What an odd way of looking at it.
loading...
Mia… I’ve had a lot of respect for the way you’ve grown your business for a long time, but if you think that JG is going to ‘use the information to help formulate changes to the industry’ you’re still star struck from the experience of having her in your office.
My comment was about the PM’s relentless grapple for power, regardless of what’s best for the country.
That is certainly not going to change with a visit to your office or a couple of hours picking and choosing the comments she wants to respond to from MM readers.
I have every confidence in our PM – every confidence that she will continue to do exactly and only what benefits her personal ambition.
As I said, I believe an opportunity lost – the childcare issue does not stand alone and is affected by all of this Government’s bad decisions.
Just my opinion and truthfully I’m definitely jaded by the current political landscape, so unlike you and MM staff, currently just cannot muster the respect for the office of PM that it so richly deserves.
loading...
The thumbs up thing is still a problem! When I click on a post, it seems as though I’ve given thumbs up to heaps of different comments (which I haven’t).
loading...
Oh dear, I’ve clicked on the lick to the post but I can’t find the PM’s responses? Why?
loading...
You may need to scroll down to comments left yesterday morning – there have been quite a few left since she was answering! Thanks Ballerina!
loading...
With all due respect… noone gives a hoot how the Prime Minister has her coffee. We are waiting for someone to compile the answers she actually gave (would have been much more productive than this post), because from where I am sitting it appeared she didn’t give us too many answers at all. She could be as warm as toast, but if she didn’t give us any real answers then I couldn’t care less.
loading...
What did you do, get up the wrong side of the bed this morning, perhaps you need a strong cup of coffee?
loading...
I think it was a fair comment. Julia treated us as if we were silly women and gave us nonsense instead of hard core answers.
Go check………>
loading...
If I did wake up on the wrong side of the bed, you couldn’t blame me, being an underpaid, worn out childcare educator and all…
loading...
I’m interested.
loading...
Lucinda take a chill pill, the answers are coming, but it does take time to thoughtfully respond to 400+ questions … So early in the morning to be negative!
loading...
Thoughtfully respond? I browsed thru 500 posts and found a few by the PM is all.
Why did she bother? she spent way more time eating muffins and black coffee with mamamia staff it seems. And giggling..cos that’s what she does best.
I do get it of course. Connect wid da people someone told her! lol!
loading...
She didn’t have a single muffin actually. And only a few sips of coffee while she was typing. No giggling. FYI.
loading...
No giggling? that would be a change. Every interview I’ve eva seen her in, whenever she’s asked something gritty, she does that condescending laugh, and goes ‘oh bob, tom, {whoever} don’t be silly’ sorta stuff.
Then trails on her merry way without a proper answer.
loading...
We provided a link to the post where the PM left some replies to comments. It’s here:
http://www.mamamia.com.au/news/prime-minister-julia-gillard-at-mamamia-your-child-care-questions/
But let’s be clear – this is about listening to what the problems are. I’m sure you’ll agree that’s important before you try to solve them. There were over 500 comments left on that post from parents and those who work in the childcare industry.
I sat with the PM and she read and discussed dozens and dozens of them with Kate Ellis and responded to a few in the hour she had (imagine trying to type quickly and accurately with two people looking over your shoulders and dozens more pointing cameras at you.
This process – both on Mamamia and several forums with stakeholders – is about gathering information and assessing what needs to be done.
It would be lovely to think there was a simple solution. It’s not that easy.
So props to the PM for engaging with the MM audience and listening to their frustrations, suggestions and complaints.
loading...
I think it’s great that she actually took the time to read all the comments and has shown such an interest in hearing our perspective. If she is aware of the issues people with children and people who work in childcare are dealing with then she is able to act accordingly. She is showing a genuine interest in hearing our points of view which is great.
How can anyone possibly respond to 500 comments in one hour?
loading...
I understand that the problems cannot be fixed overnight. But she KNOWS already what the problems are, she is a very intelligent woman. None of these things are new. When I hear the words “I am committed to working toward ensuring that early childhood educators are paid wages that match their job description and level of skill” escape her lips then I will cut her some slack

lucinda
hi; so i guess you are for the tax on super profits on australia’s non renewable resources
and you will of course be interested in how TA will fund child care without the mining tax
and of course you know that labour has increased the subsidy on childcare to 50%
and you also would like the goverment to run financial surpluses so we have a sustainable system
and you would be very happy living in australia rather than Bangladesh or Iran or Egypt wouldn’t you?
loading...
This isn’t about Tony Abbott.
I think a lot of us are tired of being told that Tony Abbott would be worse.
It just doesn’t wash
It’s really silly.
It’s like..yeh, we’re bad, but they’re worse…stuff. Meh!
loading...
Glad you all had a great time..thing is…childcare is a serious issue and she hardly answered a thing. It was a pre-election type bit of fluff, and trying to appeal to us women.
Fair enough…but still an odd thing to do, to come onto a forum like this, everyone mostly chats about women’s issues, there’s a lot of forums out there that chat about politics, I should think they’d want more than jokes about ranga’s! Childcare is not just a woman’s issue..it’s a family issue.
Something very odd about her doing that! sucking up I’d call it!
I’m a very disillusioned ex-labor voter.
loading...
Mia,
I share a similar sentiment. I don’t think she really addressed the questions/issues and took a soft approach. I also feel that you were soft on her about a topic your “community” feels passionately about.
I feel you were a bit “star struck” and didn’t want to be a strong voice for the community as you were concerned it may come out as not being nice.
I think this is precisely why the pm picked your forum. C’mon Mia be stronger if you want to differentiate yourself!
loading...
Your PM does seem like a really nice person. I like her because she seems real down to earth. Also, she clearly gets stuff done. And she gets along well with our President (Obama). They laugh a lot and that’s good. With all he has to deal with he needs to laugh sometimes.
loading...
Our PM seems like a nice lady. Still not voting for her though. Wish her well.
loading...
I want to be there! And I want Mia’s jacket, and her talent, and well, her life really!
loading...
No gallery posted up for us mobile users again…grrrrr
loading...
Sorry – should be fixed now!
loading...
Did she eat your muffins??
loading...
2 problems here.
1) she is cashing in on being female
2) she avoids other media where she knows she will be asked tough questions, and not welcomed with muffins and puppy dogs.
loading...
Sorry, what do you mean “she’s cashing in on being female”? She IS female, whether she wants to be or not, so maybe every once in a while she deserves to go somewhere where she feels comfortable (even when she’s on show and working), among other women who are used to juggling work, relationships, comments about their wardrobes and potential bad hair days. Much like John Howard used to organise his Prime Minister’s Eleven cricket matches, or endless male State premiers talk up State of Origin teams.
Jeepers, cut the woman a break …….
loading...
cady
well said
loading...
She doesn’t avoid other media she does dozens of different media engagements every week. I like the fact that she isn’t confining herself to answering questions from the same old boring journo’s and actually engages with people through a different forum.
loading...
How is she cashing in on being female? Does she do special tricks with her genitals? I’m confused.
loading...
You are spot on ! Irresepective of one’s politics, to my mind she is insincere and bullying.
She reminds me of Nurse Ratched from ” One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest”
that thin lipped calm benign smile as she is telling you what is good for you, and what you WILL do…..
loading...
I agree. Everytime she’s interviewed and is asked something hard, she goes ‘oh toneee. Oh bob..oh dave or whoever, does that stupid giggle thing and refuses, yes refuses! to answer.
In parliament sometimes, she just plain gets up and walks out when the going gets tough
loading...
and that’s a little bit offensive to the mamamia community. Who range in age, and genders, and socio-economic status, and education, and whether they have children, and obviously also their intellect.
The fact that the PM made the effort speaks volumes about the respect that she has for this forum. It is her first time on in so she obviously doesn’t go “ooh MM is an easy sell, I will go there every week to pander to the females and the puppies”.
Time for a reality check, reality. Have a think about what this politician does every single day.
