I fell in love with Offspring from the first episode. Head over heels.
I love the actors. The stories. The way it’s shot, directed and particularly the way it’s written.
Love. Its. Guts.
Debra Oswald is the creator and head writer for the Channel 10 show and I’ve wanted to interview her for the longest time.
Throughout her career she’s also worked on shows like The Secret Life of Us, Police Rescue, Bananas in Pyjamas and Wildside. And she’s also written plays for teenagers and children’s books.
This week, I talked to her about the show, which is just a few episodes from wrapping up series three…..
I want to understand where Nina came from. What was your vision for the character and what did you feel we were missing on TV?
I thought there were enough shows on TV about murder and death. I wanted to write a show about other kinds of life forces like birth, love, sex, food, dogs, live music. I wanted to chuck in lots of juicy things so it would a mixture of playful, serious, sexy, moving, medical, ridiculous.
I also wanted to do a family show – about a big, messy family. So that was the starting point before we fixed on exactly who the central Nina character would be. There was always going to be a female character who was an obstetrician, but it took a long time to decide that her point of view would be so central. That’s such a huge part of the show now.
To begin with we played with ideas for devices and style and thought ‘let’s throw everything at it and try things and not be scared of things’. But right from the start we wanted the voice-over not to be narration – not to be reflective musing – but to be a present-time internal monologue. Because I think that that’s an accurate way to reflect what happens in a moment between two people, sometimes more accurate than just hearing what comes out of someone’s mouth.
Who writes that internal Nina character?
Whoever writes the episode writes it but it’s one of those things we fiddle with it a lot at script time and Asher has very clear and thoughtful ideas about how she wants it to go.
Did you always have Asher Keddie in mind for the role of Nina? How does casting work?
When we pitched it to Channel 10 it was with Asher in mind. I knew her work. Asher is an extraordinary talent – able to handle so many dramatic and comic tones with such precision and truth . Plus she works her bum off. She’s in just about every scene, she has to do voice over and she works very hard on scripts. She throws herself into seeing each episode through. That’s why you get to see such an amazing performance on screen.
We knew we were writing for Kat (Stewart) and we had Eddie (Perfect) in our head even though it wasn’t definite at that time. With Claire (Bowditch) who’s a new character in season three – we knew we wanted to have a singer who would work with Eddie. And when we first saw rushes of her – she’s so luscious and appealing – we all looked at each other and said ‘poor Billie’… With Claire and Eddie we get the wonderful bonus of the songs they write for the show. Jane Harber (Zara) was always in the series as one of the nurses but we thought ‘she can do more’ so in series 3, we wrote more. The same is true for lots of our actors – Alicia Gardiner (Kim), Lachy Hulme (Clegg). You write to your strengths.
And Deborah Mailman?
When she’s onscreen it’s not fair to other people. She’s so beautiful. There there’s fabulous John Waters and Linda Cropper. I love the fact that the Geraldine character is so sexual and that a woman in her mid 50s is still full of desire. That’s a really important thing for me – that the women in the show are full of desire.
I often say watching Offspring so makes me wish I had a sister. How much of the plot is a reflection of your life?
I’m lucky enough to have a sister, but I don’t have a brother, so I created a brother that I’d like as one of the central characters. I’m from a small tortured family but I know a few big noisy boisterous families and so I used that. I sometimes write what I yearn for. The material ends up being a combination of what you are and what you’d wish for. So I have a sister and Jimmy’s the little brother I’d like to have.
Can you describe the writing process? What does it take to create an episode.
There’s a team of writers – with a core of three of us – and the two producers, John and Imogen. It’s a very particular show and to find people to write it… it’s an amazing chemical reaction, so we’re enormously lucky.
At the beginning of the series, I try to prepare some big story ideas that we want to tell. We’ll have about five days to brainstorm – talk and talk about the characters and possibilities. We scribble on a big whiteboard with 13 episodes down the side. The episodes that go to air are never exactly what we put up on the board because things evolve along the way, but we like to pretend it’s perfectly planned out at the start.
For example, we said : ‘Zara’s pregnant, when should she have the baby?’ I always wanted the baby to be premature so we worked out when that could land and how that might fit with what’s happening for other characters in a way that will multiply the drama. And then you have obstacles that are handed to you like Kat Stewart being pregnant (in real life) so we knew we had to lose Kat for four episodes. But you try and make that a positive. (For example) we find Nina is off the rails more when she doesn’t have Billie to pull her together.
After the brainstorming, we come to the plotting days – writing the plot for each episode. That happens with the three core writers, the producers and usually one other writer. Then each writer will go away and draft the script for their episode.

Offspring
What happens when the actors read the script – do the scenes change?
The actors will read the script and they relay their notes usually via the director and the director will come to us.
How do you balance that?
It’s tricky at times, but then again, the actors know their characters and want the drama to make sense for them. So actors’ notes can be very useful. For example, there was one scene in series one I had written where Billie has being far too aggressive with Cherie’s Christian adoptive father and Kat Stewart said ‘I think that’s too obvious and simple for a Billie response. Would it be better if she just tried really hard?’ And Kat was spot on.
As a writer you’re trying to juggle so much that you can take the obvious approach to a scene. But then an actor will come along and kind of push you to make it more interesting. Sometimes you have to cut a line when the actor doesn’t like it and it’s hard.
So who wins?
If it’s something we feel strongly about we’ll argue for it, but if an actor is uncomfortable with something it’s not going to look good. I really respect the position they’re in. So we compromise. But these are all just little quibbles along the road.
What makes Offspring so special?
I think what works about the show is that we all have a weird combination of being irreverent and saucy and also incredibly sooky.. When it comes to writing a storyline about a premature baby or infertility we all feel an incredible sense of responsibility to do it right and talk to people. Like the Billie and Mick story: we had a lot of letters from people and felt we had a duty to not solve their infertility problems easily.
The way you portrayed the gay relationship with Mick’s brother, it was magnificent because it was so ordinary…
It could have been any couple. It’s not a story about being gay, it’s actually a rom com. I’m really proud of that and I think the audience is absolutely ready for it. That was a really conscious decision by the writing/producing team.
The episode where she was drunk. It must be one the most incredible, accurate, brilliant pieces of writing.
Yes it’s a brilliant script by Michael Lucas and a brilliant performace by Asher. Also brilliant direction. That’s the process when you know what actors can do and write with glee.
Will there be a season 4?
Can’t say yet…. But either way, we always to finish a season with an end so if we don’t get renewed the audience don’t get cheated.
Meanwhile, we’re still wondering why Nina and Patrick broke up. Are you? This might help solve the mystery. Michael Lucas is one of the show’s writers…
Do you watch Offspring? What is it about the show that you love? If you’re not watching Offspring – what shows can you not stop watching?

I laugh so hard, and cry hard too. I love how they can bring that out of me. Makes me feel truly alive. The writers and actors are just perfect. I’ll watch reruns of Offspring over Masterchef anyday. There is so much that can happen in a dysfunctional (real) family. Lost relatives or old loves return, deaths, births, financial struggles. Life doesn’t end and neither should Offspring. Bring on the next season sooner than later!

Love this show, it’s THE show my boyfriend and I sit down to watch every week. Whenever my phone rings the boy yells “Nina!”
It is so well written and perfectly cast. You can feel frustrated with the characters because they are real and make real choices and mistakes.
Best Australian TV show on right now, I cannot fault it.

I live in Fitzroy and get so excited in summer when I see them shooting Offspring around the place! Sadly I’m yet to actually stumble into Patrick…
This is a great article – thx!

I really don’t like Australian TV, I really don’t like hospital dramas, or family dramas, or awkward comedy…..but oh God how I love this show. It’s just frakking brilliant.

Just thinking about offspring makes me smile… Such a wonderful show.
Although I sit there every Wednesday and watch it on my own, I have many texts going back and forth between myself, a friend and my aunt.. alot of it is “oh my god, i love this show”, “what the hell is wrong with patrick!”, “I swear I’m going to kick patrick in the b@lls”, “poor billie” and “why must we wait another week for the next episode!”…
loading...
Given all the comments to this article and on Offspring forums, I’m pretty sure the creators, producers and writers will be reading them too, i can’t imagine they would be crazy enough to get rid of dr patrick as it could potentially mean a decrease in ratings, which would inevitably lead to the cancellation of the show (and their pay slips!!).

I’ve thought (probably way too much – I’m a psyc student, its what I do) about why Nina and Patrick didn’t work out. Given Michael Lucas’ answers, which are actually really informative, here’s my take on it.
Patrick’s past is one of trauma – the loss of his baby, his drug use and his coping strategy for this is to shut down and try to block it out and not talk about it. Nina’s past, at least in the context of her family, is overinvolvement – all her family members know everything about each other and are overinvolved in each others lives; as Michael Lucas said, that is Nina’s need to fix and manage everything. Nina’s need to fix things and be involved clashes with Patrick’s desire to block and not talk about painful things, so he withdraws from her (I.e. going to stay in the hotel). This triggers all of Nina’s neuroticisms and insecurities (I.e. am I good enough, did I do the right thing – all the stuff in her inner monologue) which makes her push Patrick more for info d try to get closer to him and to seek reassurance. This then pushes patrick away further and so on. This is what Patrick meant by bringing out the worst in each other.
As I’ve said in replies to other posts, I absolutely love this show. It is so real and relatable and mas
sively entertaining. I always look forward to Wednesday nights for my offspring fix. Fingers crossed there are many more seasons to come.

I love the show but have to watch it alone, as my hubby hates it. Any other men hate it??
loading...
Yeap, my husband doesn’t like it! he doesn’t like any soap type shows! I don’t mind though!

It is pure joy to watch well written TV. There is so much out there that is not very wll written.
It is clever, funny and the hihlight of my week. Love the whole cast and all the characters.
Love it, love it, love it…

Without Asher Offspring wouldn’t work, it is her vehicle. And Matt Le Nevez is her perfect foil, he would need a seriously good replacement for the show to move on without him.
But kudos to the makers and a great ensemble cast.
loading...
Totally agree with your comment. I actually didn’t enjoy season 1 that much as I didn’t think Dr Havel and Nina had much chemistry. I was about to give up on the show until Matt Le Nevez joined. Nina and Patrick have amazing rapport and chemistry.
loading...
I love Offspring, great show! But I wish Nina and Patrick didn’t break up, love them as a couple.
loading...
I refuse to believe that Nina and Patrick have broken up for good.
And Zara’s ‘participation’ was pure genius
loading...
Im a big fan of Nina’s wardrobe, she always looks so effortlessly gorgeous !!
loading...
Me too! The wardrobe department should release a suppliers list of her outfits for every episode. If the Block can do so can Offspring! And producers, if you need a hand I’m more than willing to help out..

As a mid-20 something in inner Melbourne I love this show but I watch it thinking how uncool I am!
I know all the locations, have lived in some of them, and when I see them eating brunch in cool clothes in an achingly hip Fitzroy cafe I think ‘why is that not my life!’ and have to remind myself it is TV. And that I sometimes do cool things.
I love the show for the show, but it is an added bonus to be able go ‘hey I know that place!’. Love a Melbourne show.

Gorgeous show. My kids – 13 and 11 – get home from dancing just as it’s about to start and are now addicted. It’s soooooo inappropriate for them, I know, but they recognise how very clever it is and I just make them hide under the sofa cushions when the naughty bits come up. They laugh and cry along with my husband and me.

One of the best drama’s on TV right now. Congrats to Debra and the team for putting such awesome homegrown drama on the telly. So sad that the season is about to end. I have taped them all and watch them over and over again in the off-season. Season 4 should be a shoe in and Channel Ten should be ashamed of themselves if they don’t renew. Special mention also to Alicia Gardiner in last night’s episode. Her scene with Clegg and Cherie talking about how much of a fruitcake he is had me in stitches ! Let’s see more of her in the next series. And of course much, much more of Patrick and Nina. Long live Offspring !!!

I love Offspring as well! Obsessively almost. Loved lasts nights episode. My favourites were when Zara climbed into Jimmy’s bed after the heart wrenching and wonderfully acted crying scene in her very pristine (empty), adult apartment, which was contrasted so nicely with the Proudman family home – noisy, messy and earthy. I also had to laugh when Klegg spent the entire day trying to sound his version of normal which came across as part street gangster part try hard middle aged Dad attempting to be cool. He is so nuts. I love him.
Also loved the emotional good bye scene between Nina and Patrick. That was so emotional and it sucked me right in. Oh he is so so sensitive and seems to tear up/cry easily. What a man! He almost always looks at Nina as if he is about to smile or he is openly smiling!
loading...
Offspring is my first…..show that I can actually say I am addicted to…although I do have to watch via “ten catch up” on the internet @ 10 pm or worst case the next night!! to ensure there is minimal interferance from my husband,4 children, dogs, cat, lizards, frog and goldfish. Great Aussie entertainment……Each week I find myself desperately looking for clothes like Ninas’…xoxox
loading...
I often have to watch online too, but how annoying and loud and repetitive are the ads?!!! I swear if I see another Mazda ad, or that tech college one…
loading...
Last nights show was just classic!! Everything from the lunch “they are vegetarians!” to Zara’s crying to Zara saying “I was just trying to participate”. Fantastic.
But I’m really not liking the storyline with Claire Bowdith. Haven’t Billie and MIck been through enough? Do we really need to test them more?
loading...
I agree with the storyline involving Claire. I love her as a singer, but I wish they had just kept her story with Mick as very bland or something… it’s made me edgy!
loading...
Yeah, I love Clare Bowditch and like her character, but the storyline with Mick makes me feel anxious for Billie. I think it would have been interesting if they had Rosanna offer to be a surrogate or something like that, without the attraction storyline.
loading...
Thank you so much for asking that question of Michael Lucas Mia, and thanks so much to Michael for the perfect response. It had me flummoxed! My husband watched with me for the first time this season last night, and was driving me crazy with questions trying to catch up. I was sobbing my eyes out as Patrick said to Nina “you can have a great love but bring out the worst in each other”‘ and my husband said to me “but do they, do they bring the worst out in each other?” I just wailed “no, no, I don’t understand why he’s saying that, they are perfect together.” Hence, I am understandably grateful for some context.
I am currently on maternity leave after having my second child a few months ago and Offspring has become such an important part of my otherwise reasonably dull week. The adventures of Nina and co are leaving me an emotional basket case, and remind me of what life was like pre-kids and why I’m glad to be out of the dating scene! A reminder of what quality drama Australia can produce.
loading...
I’m currently going through a situation a bit similar to the Nina and Patrick relationship – two people who care so much for each other and connect but clash in many other ways – and i thought Patrick’s comment about bringing out the worst in each other was spot on. They definitely do – Nina becomes more neurotic, yells at Patrick and is short on patience with him, and gets wildly drunk and goes home with a stranger, while Patrick becomes more dark and withdrawn and ends up putting his shoulder out trying to attack Adam at Nina’s house.
Anyway, I absolutely adore this show. I can relate so well to the character of Nina, her inner monologue, her crazy, chaotic life. It is such an addictive show, and I always look forward to watching it. Love everything about it – characters, actors, storylines, fashion. I would be devastated if it didnt get renewed for another season, so fingers crossed!

Love the actors, love the stories. Best show on telly ever! I think I’m close to tears by laughing or crying every single episode.

Love the show so much. I wish they had more credits so you can see where the amazing fashion is from. I have checked channel 10 site but none the wiser. Fingers crossed for season 4!!!

Thanks so much – yes, reader demand has meant I’ve blogged shopping suggestions throughout this series. Unfortunately most exact pieces are now no longer available in store but there are plenty of ways to capture Nina’s look and make it your own.

TEAM PATRICK & NINA!!! SORT YOUR SHIT OUT YOU TWO
(Yes….Im hoping these imaginary characters read this and take note – from a hardcore fan)

Deb Oswald and writers and directors – awesome I am totally inspired by you guys.
Helped me heal from my doogy dying (just a wee bit, anyway)
Some things that I loved this season and related to were poor rocket dying..
and I absolutely loved the scene a few weeks ago between mick and his brother sitting on the gutter saying goodbye before the brother went away – totally moving and funny, and required the backgrond relationship for it to be so poignant!
As for Jimmy with that rope for Zara to pull during labour. Too funny, I still laugh when I think about him with that thing, richard is just brilliant as Jimmy.
Zara is nice and complex as well and how funny was Klegg trying to be “normal “last night ahhhh too good.
A pinacle of relevance is Offspring! talk about finger on the pulse, Deb Oswald!

Due to work commitments I have been watching Offspring on my ipad on the weekends – So I am a bit on delay – after the breakup, + drunk nightclub scene, I had at least seven texts saying along the lines of “Oh my god, I just saw you on Offspring”. After the “extra garlic sauce” kebab scene, I even got phone calls along the line of “is this your life? Does someone in tv land follow you and take notes”… the drunken empty fridge saga of opening organic yoghurt with teeth…. Been there. My friend was having quiet man time the same time as Patrick had locked himself in the hotel. During an argument I said “At least I wasn’t like Nina and I didn’t go and bang on your door….” Yep, using a TV character as ammunition in a relationship fight.
It is almost excruciating to watch, and somewhat of an embarrassment that my life is so closely reflected in a tv show. I wonder – am I so much the stereotypical, crazy familied, relationship drama filled professional 30 something -woman? But then I realize, no – that is just Deb Oswald’s genius. Tapping into what is real life for so many of us. Messiness but good intentions and being pulled in multiple directions, trying to keep everyone happy and trying to be happy.
The brilliance of Offspring, is that in each of the characters – with their human flaws, we see their joys, their loves and their hopes.
Last night I was out for dinner with 8 men, dinner had to end in time for them to get home and watch Offspring.

and can I just say this? The actor who plays Patrick…. HOT…HOT…HOT
So hot. For realz.

oh my god, I haven’t watched offspring properly for a couple of seasons, but I switched it on last night and watched the entire episode. Christ, that goodbye scene with Patrick was palpable… just extraordinary writing, very truthful and down to the core of how two people feel when they’re next to each other and have those kind of feelings. LOVE the internal monologues of Nina as well. Just beautiful writing. Kudos. What an amazing show to work on. Super jealous.
loading...
I also absolutely LOVE Offspring. Its the one show each week that i MUST watch. What other show is able to evoke such a range of emotions each and every episode? Such clever writing and such brilliant acting. I still can’t say that I have actually recovered from Nina and Patrick’s emotional farewell last night…I am a wreck!! PATRICKKKK, come back…..we love you!!!!
What in the name of all things wonderful is Channel 10 thinking? How can they still be deciding whether or not to give Offspring another season? Isn’t it a no-brainer? This is the best Australian comedy/drama series I have ever had the pleasure to watch. It is loved by both the public and critics alike, and from what I have read, all the cast seem to be very keen to commit to another season. What are you waiting for Channel 10? There is too much other rubbish on TV. You really owe it to us to give us Season 4….
Yours truly, an avid OFFSPRING fan!!!

Without doubt the best show on TV. The characters are so real and so hilarious, the issues so relateable, so well dealt with. I love the fashions and seeing what Nina wearing each week.
I never thougt I would heart a TV character as much as Dr Chris, then along came Patrick. Swoon.
I will be heartbroken if there is no season 4. In my opinion each series has been better than the last.

i just love love this show! Wednesday nights i say to my husband feel free to go out with your mates its my beauty and offspring night! so sad its coming to a finish already!!
The characters are just fab and so quirky! i really do love Martin and how weird he can be! haha bt hands down Drunk Nina ep has to be my favourite so far!
i hope Season 4 is picked up!!! we need more good australian shows!
Thanks Mammamia for this article

The funniest episode I have ever seen, of anything, in my LIFE. Nina when she got smashed and got the soup and hid behind the tree. I was crying with laughter.
Awesome show and Patrick is delicious too
loading...
Totally agree. It was one of the funniest episodes of television I have ever seen.
Asher is hilarious, but when she was hiding in the tree, she was hysterical. I still wet my pants with laughter whenever I think about it.
loading...
Oh me too!! I absolutely loved that scene, beyond hilarious and just fit so well with Nina’s character and the storyline. Also love Patrick too, he’s gorgeous!
loading...
It’s magical how good this show is!
I hope it gets renewed while its still brilliant!
loading...
I only discovered Offspring a few weeks ago and quickly ripped through seasons 1 and 2. I’ve been watching season 3 now and think its lost its way. The show is funny when Nina is awkwardly in love, but this whole season has a sad undertone from the long-drawn out breakup with Patrick; and now they’re doing the same thing with Billie and Mick. It’s not fun anymore. I’d like to see the show ditch this story line and find a new love interest for Nina that can leave her shy and awkard in love again.
loading...
There bloody well be a Season 4!! Wed night is the only night I ask my partner to put our son to bed so that I can watch Offspring in peace! Without it, I’m back on nightime duty!
Love Offspring to bits! The only show I watch religiously.
loading...
This article is FABULOUS! I read it last night before drifting off to sleep, and it was the perfect way to end the day and just the sort of thing I want to read before bed.
I love Offspring for a number of reasons:
1. PATRICK – what an incredible actor, his longing looks at Nina are heart melting.
2. It’s hilariously, emotionally, cleverly written
3. It’s realistic – yes, that is how women think a lot of the time! Thanks Nina.
4. Great AUSTRALIAN television
5. Amazing music. Eve by Neulore is one of my FAVOURITE songs thanks to the Offspring soundtrack.
6. Strong, well educated, smart, great career characters – wouldn’t mind them as role models in my life.
7. Disjointed family who drop around often and make pointless phone calls to one another – we’ve all got a bit of that in ours.
8. My last 2 Friday night after work drinks I’ve floated into JB Hi Fi. Week 1 I purchased season 1 but there wasn’t enough Patrick and Dr Chris is so 2010. So last week I brought season 2 and started watching from episode 7 – got my Patrick fix. I’m 23 years old, could someone find a Patrick and put him on hold for about 3-6 years when I’m ready for a serious relationship and all that goes with it? Thank you.
loading...
But will Patrick be ready by then?
loading...
haha of course he will, hence why I’ve put him on order
loading...
regarding the Music i actually walked downt he aisle to the same music as Billie did! loved the song and the meaning!
loading...
Would you be able to share the song name? Have been looking!
loading...
Great post!
1. Patrick – totally agree, he’s a very good actor. I realised that watching the goodbye scene last week, the emotion in his face and his expressions just conveyed so clearly and so perfectly his feelings. Amazing!
3. Is that how a lot of women think a lot of the time? I thought it was just me and Nina! haha. You’re absolutely right, she’s so easy to relate to.
6. Yes, arent the characters great. So likable and deep and believable. And I would definitely love to have them in my life too.
8. I have found myself thinking, many a time, how much I would like my own Patrick just for me, hehe.
loading...
You have to do Season 4 I live each week for Offspring its the best show ever and Asher Keddie OMG you are a stunning, beautiful, amazing woman!
loading...
Patrick, now that Keith has left our screens you have to return. I can’t loose both of you.
loading...
Best show by far! My partner watched an episode a while ago with me and now is hooked as well.
Shame if not renewed. I hope they are just saying that so that they don’t jinx it!
loading...
Best ever show, must continue for many many years. The Nina character is so hilarious, I laugh every time I think of her climbing into the pot plant or climbing through the bathroom window, I always wonder whether asher adlibbed those scenes? The show has so much heart and when you compare it to shows like winners and losers, you can see that it is just on a different level altogether . Also, who knew that Clare bowditch could act as well, gosh all these singing actors are brilliant, it is not fair on those of us with no talent!
loading...
I fell in love with Clare Bowditch when she was on the panel of Q&A – what an impressive woman – intellligent, witty, funny, fiesty. Awesome.
Love her in the show and looking forward to see which direction they take her in
loading...
Best thing ever? The ep where Nina got drunk and was dancing like a pro, with her voiceover saying that she never knew what a hot-shit dancer she was – cut to reality showing her hair everywhere, makeup smeared, dancing exactly like she’s had 4 million drinks. Seriously, I still crack up everytime I think of it, and cringe slightly when I realise I’ve been guilty of doing the same thing
loading...
Adore Offspring! It’s got to be one of the best Aussie shows of all time. Asher plays Nina to perfection, and her performance actually makes me laugh out loud. The time when she was hiding in the bushes drunk, trying not to be seen by Adam – hilarious! I think I love it so much as the characters are so real. The writers do an amazing job.
I will be crushed if there isn’t a Season 4! Surely there will be, it’s such a hit for Channel Ten.
loading...
PS – My husband loves it too! Which is really saying something, he hates TV.
loading...
That was the funniest episode of any show EVER!!
I nearly rolled off my couch!
loading...
I love love love it, it makes me laugh and cry in just about every episode. Could so relate to the drunken Nina trying to get the DJ to play music she likes, have been there! Love Clegg, love the whole family, they talk like real people though all so beautifully dressed! And such handsome doctors, Chris, Patrick aaahhh. Darcy and Geraldine, have there ever been cooler parents anywhere??
loading...
Oh please don’t tell me you mightn’t “get renewed” for another season – that will break my heart!!
I’m still mourning Love My Way and Spirited!! :’(
Aughhhhhhhhhhhhh
loading...
Agree…not get renewed? They would be nuts not to renew it. I am from the US and think this beats any Hollywood produced show. Cast and writing are all top notch. Love it! Patrick frustrates me, however.
loading...
Definitely! But he’s supposed to make us scream at the screen, “are you crazy?! Be with Nina!! We love her, why don’t you?!! Idiot!!”
hahaha
Just like we want to when we see our real best friends being treated like that by a man.
Actually, why do we want him for her anyway – can’t she do better, with someone who does value her who isn’t so difficult?!
loading...
I was disappointed the preview for next week’s ep gave it all away!
Having said that, I am in love with this show, and can’t decide if I like Nina or Billie more. They are fabulous characters, and love the fact you never know what’s going to happen next. Please please please be a season 4!
loading...
Usually 100% love Offspring but disappointed that Zara was wearing skinny jeans and heels last night. Didn’t she just have an emergency Caesar? Where is the belly, trackies and ugg boots. Speaking from experience here!!
loading...
Is that still true if the baby was only just over half term?
I think the birth was quite a few weeks ago too?
loading...
Yeah, and some people do actually fit back into their clothes a few weeks after having a baby… let’s not turn this into a debate over what a woman ‘should’ look like after having a baby (ab, not alyssakt@)
loading...
I don’t want a debate some people are lucky. I just thought offspring would show the norm.

After my mum had me (vaginal birth) she said she could fit into jeans she couldn’t fit into before getting pregnant – she reckoned it was because I had smooshed up all her organs. Haha
She was never skinny though

I had twins – Caeserian birth. And recently saw a picture of self 4 weeks later in pre- pregnancy jeans. I did not make any effort at loosing weight – was too busy with surviving. So I suppose – just happened.

An emergency caesar at 29 weeks means your body hasn’t been through the incredible last trimester and all of its changes, so yes, it is actually feasible she’s be back in skinny jeans as the baby was born so early.

I guess I was thinking more of the scar and pain. I couldn’t wear anything but trackies for weeks but maybe I am the exception?

I love Offspring, it’s my one “must watch” TV show of the week.
I think it’s beautifully written. The characters are all so flawed yet so sympathetic.I adore Nina and can totally relate to her. Asher Keddie is amazing in the role. (I also loved her in Love My Way – best Australian TV drama ever IMO.) The rest of the cast are fantastic too.
I so hope there is a Series 4!

Agreed 10000% on “Love My Way”. Was never a huge fan of Asher’s character, so it just demonstrates her superb acting skills – I never thought I’d “get past” LMW – but after one episode she IS Nina Proudman!
Anyone that hasn’t seen LMW – get it now!

‘we always to finish a season with an end so if we don’t get renewed the audience don’t get cheated.’ Sorry, but regardless of what happens in the next couple of episodes, if there are no more seasons, we WILL feel cheated! The show MUST go on!
I have never loved a TV show so much. The last few winters, I have worried that there is something wrong me because I love it so much. I even find myself thinking about the characters for a day or two after each episode – how embarrassing!
I did say to my husband after last night’s show finished though, that next year (because there WILL be more seasons – positive affirmations!) he is not allowed to let me watch it on a week-by-week basis. That I have to wait till it’s all over and I can watch the whole series on DVD or iTunes all at once. I can’t stand how each episode ends with so many un-answered questions!
I missed quite a few episodes while overseas this time but have caught up…. but I still don’t know WHY Nina and Patrick actually broke up. Anyone? Anyone? It’s not clear to me and then they were awful to each other, so so sad…
Each episode makes me laugh out loud (although last night’s not so much) and usually cry too. Amazing writing.

They left it unclear, because I guess it’s still unclear to Nina.
But my take on it was affirmed by Billie last episode when she called him a weak man who freaked out when things got serious with Nina.
Nina asked him if he wanted kids one day and he freaked out, then sort of used the case against him by that patient and her controlling husband as an excuse to get away from Nina.
But since then we saw some steps towards his healing when his ex wife gave him that photo album about their lost son. I think he will have to damn well get his shit together, especially after last night’s preview!!
He looked so gorgeously last night in that snuggly looking sweater, hugging Nina goodbye with tears in his eyes.
Oh my God I love that show!

Oh good analysis alyssakt! Love your work.
I thought all those things too I guess but it just never seemed enough to break up. And last night when he said that they have such an intense love but bring out the worst in each other, it killed me! As they bring out the best in each other too.
And when they were both there during that delivery of the couple who lost their baby at birth last season, that was quite a moment. It’s like Patrick does need to have his own baby again to see that it can go right.
Still, the episodes where Nina got drunk and met Adam etc made for some of the funniest moment ever in the show.
OK, now I sound like a really weird person putting so much thought into a TV show!

I felt like that too when I was writing – but it doesn’t seem like “just a show”, they have created something with so much magic that we genuinely care about the characters. That doesn’t happen very often

Absolutely love Offspring I live for Wed nights. Asher is so good. Asher for gold logie. And then there’s Patrick… Oh my. Love him. Best show on tv by far. Gotta keep reminding myself they’re not real people and to calm
down

The reason I am in love with Offspring is that I can absolutely relate to every episode, I have 2 sisters and separated parents and wow its just as hectic as the show, we all sit there laughing/crying while watching and then ring each other after its finished to point out all of the similarities…Just love it! Thanks Deborah. xx – Also, it makes me feel normal.
